Jihyo felt a whisp of air pass by her as she was arranging the plates of chicken by the table, like someone ran by her. Sure enough, she caught a glimpse of little Jiwon's purple tutu as he ran past the table.
"Don't run, honey! What did eomma tell you about running?" she called, wiping her hands by her apron. Choi Jiwon turned back and gave her a small smile before running into her playroom, along with Jaebum's own son, Jungwoon, and Bambam and Mina's little girl, Suki. They were the most adorable little bunch, and very soon their house would be filled with screaming little children, all without the cuteness.
Not that she was complaining, though.
Jihyo walked back into the kitchen, where Mina was working on grating a whole carrot. "Jihyo unnie?"
"Yeah?" she asked, resuming her work by the kimbap.
"Remind me again; why are we grating whole carrots?" Mina's forehead was scrunched. "Vegetables have practically no use in children's parties, you know."
"Aigo, Mina, those are going in the spaghetti sauce." Jihyo winked at her. "There's no way kids are going to eat them if they know they're vegetables, so we put them in the spaghetti. That way everyone's happy."
Mina rolled her eyes and laughed. "You're such a mom."
"Yah, you're one too, Mina, don't excuse yourself."
"Yeah, but not that kind of mom." She smiled to herself. "Probably because Suki's not really that picky an eater, she eats anything."
"Well, you're going to find her increasingly hard to feed when she gets older," Jihyo replied. "And that'll come by very sooner than you think."
"Tell me about it." Mina looked at her. "Jiwon's already four."
Jihyo nodded. "Yeah. It's like it was only yesterday that Youngjae was singing her nursery rhymes, now she's singing them herself."
As Mina went on about how Bambam could probably spoil Suki to death, Jihyo's mind couldn't help but wander off and linger. It was Jiwon's fourth birthday party, and she couldn't really tell if three years have really passed - it felt like a short amount of time. She'd put a stop to Jiwon's growing if she could, so that she could remain her princess peach forever, but that wasn't nowhere near true.
But she was still hoping she could.
"Which reminds me, unnie," Mina said, "where is Youngjae oppa?"
Jihyo's eyes widened. "Oh, he's hanging the streamers outside. I'd better go check on him."
She walked out of the kitchen, scurrying off to the front yard, where Choi Youngjae was up by the porch, busying himself by pinning pink and purple streamers by the ceiling, colors indicating the Princess Peach themed birthday party that was in store. He was still wearing a dark t-shirt and shorts, which he had worn ever since breakfast that morning.
"Hi, honey," Jihyo called, bringing her hands to her waist. "You good?"
Youngjae peered down at her and flashed her a smile. "Yep, quite." He released a sigh of content after pinning the last few strands of colored crepe paper. "There!" He heaved himself down the ladder, walking over to where Jihyo was standing under it. "Decorations are done, your highness."
Jihyo raised an eyebrow. "Is the backyard set with streamers?"
Youngjae gave his signature otter smile and nodded. "Yep."
"Goodie bags all good?"
"Uh-huh."
"Balloons?"
"They're in the spare room, Bambam's helping me hang them up a little later so they don't deflate."
"What about the cake?"
"Jinyoung hyung and Nayeon noona are picking it up for us. They have a car." He placed his hands on his hips in triumph. "Anything else?"
Jihyo couldn't help the smile that crept to her face. "Wow, Superman. Great party planning." She held out her arms for him to creep under, and he snaked his arms around her waist, bringing a small kiss to her temple.
"You smell like pudding," he commented, his face by her neck. Jihyo grunted a laugh of confirmation.
Suddenly, little kids' laughter could be heard through the corridors by the door, and the three kids ran out, chasing after Jaebum's son, who had a small toy dinosaur in hand. Suki followed, gracing a headband with pretty cat ears attached to them. She reminded Jihyo of Bambam a lot - she had mischief spelled all over her angelic little face.
Jiwon was the last, being the youngest out of the three, and she was running already in her Princess Peach costume. Youngjae and Jihyo broke off their embrace as soon as they saw her, and Youngjae swept her up in one swift motion, "What did appa tell you about running, sweetheart?"
"Jiwonie shouldn't run because she could get hurt," the little girl replied, hugging her father's neck.
"Don't run too much, Jiwon-ah, you'll ruin your dress," said Jihyo, adjusting some parts of her skirt. "You don't want to be an ugly Princess Peach now, do you?" She shook her head to this repeatedly. "That's good, that's good."
"Who else is coming, eomma?" Jiwon asked, allowing Youngjae to adjust the little crown on her head as she was in his arms.
"Well, there's Uncle Jinyoung and Aunt Nayeon, with Haesungie, and Uncle Jackson and Auntie Momo, along with Uncle Jaebum and Aunt Jeongyeon. I think Uncle Chan and Uncle Woojin are coming too. Uncle Chan always brings gifts."
"Is Uncle Mark coming too, eomma? I want to see him fly again."
Jihyo giggled at her daughter's cuteness. "Aunt Sana told us they'll come if they can, baby." Jiwon nodded sweetly.
"How's the food?" Youngjae asked.
"Mina and I are just finishing up. The table will be set soon." She finished readjusting Jiwon's little crown. "Looks like your party's ready to go, Jiwonie."
"Ani, not yet, eomma."
Youngjae cocked an eyebrow up. "What else does little Jiwonie want for her birthday?"
"Eomma and Appa are not yet dressed," she commented, which made Jihyo and Youngjae look down at their own clothes; home clothes, to be exact. They weren't even in pink, which ruined the whole look.
They both stifled into laughter. "That's right, honey, we forgot about eomma and appa's clothes! We'd better get changed, honey." Jihyo gave a small nod.
Approximately half an hour later, Jiwon's party was at full show. Everyone gathered at the table; Nayeon and her husband Jinyoung, who had their five year-old son Haesung in his arms; Jackson and Momo, who were both wearing matching paper crown party hats; Bambam and Mina with Suki; Jaebum, who had Jungwoon sitting at his shoulders; Jeongyeon and Dahyun, who had brought along Chaeyoung; Sana and Mark, also wearing party hats; and Bang Chan with Woojin, who looked like they were the only single men there. Seulgi promised to drop by later with Jimin and their son, Yeogun, and Bambam had invited Lisa and Rose over, with Jungkook and Yugyeom. They were expecting a lot more guests.
There were a lot of phones and cameras. Suki was clapping uncontrollably at how prettily pink the cake was, and Haesung almost had his dad topple over because he was trying to get his hands on the sweets.
"Are you ready, sweetheart?" asked Jihyo, Youngjae standing behind her. They were both dressed appropriately for the party now; both in pink button-ups. Jiwon nodded.
"Saeng-il chuka habnida..." Youngjae began, clapping his hands, leading everyone else as they sang. Everyone had the cutest smiles on their faces as they did.
"Happy Birthday, Jiwonie!" They all called after singing, signaling Jiwon to blow out her candle. They all cheered and clapped once she did, and she clapped along, the most adorable smile on her own face as well. The children seemed to be enjoying the cheering the most, laughing along.
"Happy birthday, my sweet girl," Youngjae said, picking up Jiwon and kissing her cheek. He turned to Jihyo, "Jagi, you go ahead and serve the guests, I'll eat with Jiwonie."
"Okay, but we're switching in a while." Jihyo gave Jiwon a small kiss. "Happy birthday, sweetie, go enjoy yourself."
Youngjae and Jiwon disppeared out back, Jihyo catching his whisper, "Let's see what mommy and daddy got you for your birthday, huh?"
She smiled to herself before hearing Nayeon walk over to her. "Party's looking great, Jihyo-ah."
"Thank you, unnie," Jihyo said, returning Nayeon's hug. "Thanks for picking up the cake."
"Sure, sure." Sana walked over with Momo, and they all hugged and bade each other after nearly years of not seeing each other.
"Jiwon's such a pretty girl, Jihyo." Sana was digging her way onto some ice cream. "I'm surprised she's not as loud as both of you."
"You should stay with her during Barbie movies, unnie, she's clearly Youngjae's daughter." They all laughed.
"Who knew our Jihyo would make such a great mom?" Momo said, wrapping an arm around Jihyo.
Jihyo looked up, and saw Youngjae talking to Chan and Woojin, Jiwon clinging to his leg, a golden glint of the necklace he had bought her wrapped around her neck, one of the many gifts her father had gotten for her. She smiled. It was only because of the both of them that she was a good mother; she'd do anything for the both of them.
Youngjae caught her eye and smiled. She smiled back.
Just wait until she sees the doll he had customized to look like her mother.
