Jaebum adjusted the strap of his leather sling bag as he picked his pace. He checked his wristwatch: 4:07 pm. Shoot, he thought to himself. I'm late. Again.
He mentally cursed himself as he jogged to the daycare center almost three blocks from where he worked. Jungwoon's kindergarten class ended almost a half hour ago, and the school was so close to his office, but his boss just had to pick today to get him to work a little bit late. His boss was a jerk - at least to him he was - and his son was paying the price.
Jaebum practically raced to the school, and he felt his feet hurt inside his leather shoes. When he had finally arrived, he felt relieved at the sight he saw: Im Jungwoon, his five year-old son, sitting gingerly on the steps of his daycare center, his cute little blue backpack slung on his shoulders and his red GOT7 cap placed neatly on his head. He was tinkering with something on his hand, and he seemed to be focusing on it very seriously.
He sighed and walked over towards his son. Jungwoon, upon hearing his father's footsteps against the pavement, looked up, and a huge smile automatically appeared onto his little face. He stood up and went down the steps, one step at a time, and raced his little legs to Jaebum, calling out, "Appa!" with his arms spread out.
Jaebum stopped at his tracks to anticipate him and crouched down to his son's level as he gave him an embrace around his neck. He couldn't help but smile at the sight of his son's warm smile and monolid eyes, which resembled his own, even after an exhausting day at work. "Annyeong, Jungwoon-ssi," he cooed, releasing him and giving him a small kiss on his cheek. "Are you all alone?"
"Aniyo, seonsaeng-nim (teacher) is still inside, she said I could wait for you outside," he explained.
"I see," Jaebum replied. "Sorry, buddy, Appa got caught up with work today, he got a little late," Jaebum apologized, looking up at his son's angelic face, adjusting his collar. He felt guiltier than he was before.
"That's okay, appa." Jungwoon gave him another smile and patted his head gingerly. "You're here now, so it's okay." Jaebum gave him a smile as well, obviously relieved. He was thankful that Jungwoon was such an understanding kid; he wasn't a real pro at the whole "single dad" thing, and he had some mix-ups every now and then, but no matter what, he always looked up to Jaebum, which only inspires him to do more for the both of them.
"Thank you." Jungwoon crinkled his nose at his father's words. "Let's go, shall we?"
"Are we going home now, appa?" Jungwoon asked as Jaebum stood up, their hands interlocked.
"Not yet, bud, we're going to the supermarket first," the latter replied.
"What're we going to do there?"
"We're going to buy all the delicious food and some things for the bathroom." Jaebum looked down at his son. "It'll be like an adventure! Would you like that?"
Jungwoon cheered and laughed adorably as they walked together, Jaebum slowing his steps down so his son could catch up.
As they walked, Jaebum caught the opportunity to catch up and ask his son about his day at school, and Jungwoon wouldn't stop talking. In fact, little Jungwoon showed him the five star stickers his teacher had placed on the breast pocket of his little shirt, for answering five of his teacher's questions during class. He beamed as he told his father about everything.
"Teacher asked us about what we want to be when we grow up," he narrated, clutching onto the red GOT7 cap.
"Really? What'd you say?"
"I told teacher that I wanted to learn how to play the guitar like appa." The largest smile appeared on Jaebum's face; every now and then, he would take his son to the park for a little picnic when he wasn't busy, and he would play the guitar as Jungwoon ran around. It never occurred to him that the boy was actually listening.
"That's great! Appa will teach you someday," he replied as he scanned his child's smiling face. Jungwoon still had so many stories to tell, and he was sure that he wouldn't get tired of listening as he rambled on about crayons and songs and paper airplanes.
The doors dinged as they went inside the supermarket, and Jungwoon rotated his head in every direction he could in awe as his father went to go get a shopping cart. He lifted the toddler up and placed him gingerly inside the cart along with his bag and patted his head, and the boy cheered as the cart moved. To him, it was like a car ride, complete with the adorable sound effects and hand movements.
Once they had entered, Jaebum's mind started working like clockwork. He wanted to make sure that he got everything they needed, since it was a Friday, and people would crowd in during the weekends and they would'nt have much time. He made sure to remember everything Jinyoung had told him before: essentials first, save unimportant stuff for later. That meant food for the both of them, milk, some occasional diapers, and stuff for the bathroom. He was focused on getting the stuff they really needed.
Soon, sitting inside the cart with his kid were various products that were part of a shopping list now engraved in Jaebum's mind.
Meanwhile, Jungwoon had other plans. He always looked and pointed at different stuff that caught his attention. It was always "Appa, can we get a giraffe burger?", or "Appa, I want the space cereal!", or "Appa, I want the big boy drinks, too!", where he would get a glare from his father. Jaebum would always end up telling him that "We'll get some later," but never really remembers to do so and just proceeds to checking product labels and shopping what they really needed.
As Jungwoon was distracted with the colorful packaging and numerous varieties of the products at the candy aisle, Jaebum found himself staring as he walked slowly. Not at anything they were selling at the store, but at another customer. More specifically, a girl.
This girl was wearing jeans, and a white shirt inside a gray cardigan. She had hair that wasn't even long enough to touch her shoulders, and had the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. She was scanning chocolates and candy bars, picking one occasionally and referring to the packaging. She seemed like a simple girl, in a simple outfit, looking for chocolates and candies, yet he managed to capture Jaebum's eyes, which he himself found weird.
Ever since his split with Jungwoon's mom and his busy days working, he hasn't really thought about love that much lately. He never really met any new women except for Jungwoon's teacher, and they barely talked. He feared he had become one of those men; but he had his son and too much going on, so it never crossed his mind.
And yet, here this girl was, enticing him with her beautiful gaze and short hair.
Jungwoon was busy rambling on and on, looking at different pieces of candy from the shopping cart, asking repeatedly if he could get more, to which Jaebum absent-mindedly just nods.
"Appa, are peppermints spicy like the pepper you put on food? Do they taste bad?" he asked, shaking the red box in his hand. Jaebum didn't answer. "Appa?" He looked at his father, whose eyes were glued elsewhere. He followed his gaze, and saw him looking at a woman about his age. He was puzzled.
"Appa, who is she?" he asked, tapping his father's hand, which was on the cart's handle.
Jaebum snapped back to reality. "What was that, son?"
"You were staring at that pretty lady over there," he said, pointing his finger at the girl. Jaebum had to draw his son's finger away from the girl to prevent unwanted attention. "Who is she?"
"I don't know, Jungwoon-ssi, appa was just looking at the chocolate bars," Jaebum lied, hoping his son wouldn't figure out he was gawking.
"No, you were looking at the pretty lady, appa," he said, hugging the box of peppermints. "Do you think she's pretty?"
Jaebum smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "I guess I do."
Jungwoon giggled, and Jaebum placed a finger to his lips, signaling him to hush down. Jungwoon immediately turned around, and called out to the lady, "Hi!"
Jaebum made him sit back down on the cart, but it was too late. The girl turned her head at their direction, and caught the sight of the five year old boy inside the shopping cart, waving at her. She smiled back, and waved back. "Hello there," she replied.
"My appa thinks you're pretty," Jungwoon said, popping back up. Jaebum's eyes widened almost immediately, and made him sit back down again, averting the girl's gaze due to his embarrassment. The girl only laughed, and walked over to their cart, looking at Jungwoon and occasionally, Jaebum.
"Is that so?" she asked the boy, smiling.
"Ne, he's been staring at you since forever." Jaebum turned a bright cherry pink, and the girl laughed again as he averted his gaze.
"Well, I think your appa doesn't look too bad himself," the girl said, looking at the father. He looked at the girl, who was greeting him with a warm smile, and smiled back.
"Hi," she said.
"H-Hey," Jaebum stuttered from embarrassment.
The girl held out a hand. "Yoo Jeongyeon," she introduced.
"Oh, Im Jaebum," he replied, offering a hand to shake as well, a big smile on his face.
"And I'm Jungwoon!" the small boy from the cart exclaimed, standing up to introduce himself to Jeongyeon.
Jeongyeon laughed. "Why hello, Jungwoon," she said. "Would you like some chocolate?" she asked him, offering him one bar from her hands.
Jaebum's eyes widened again. "Oh, you really don't have to-"
"Oh, it's fine," Jeongyeon said, smiling. "I was going to buy one for myself, but you have such a charming kid, I couldn't resist." She patted Jungwoon on the head as the kid beamed at the candy bar. "Where's your eomma, Jungwoon?"
"She's far away," he replied.
"Noona," Jaebum said, reminding him to use honorifics.
"Oh, she's far away, noona," Jungwoon reiterated, emphasizing the honorific.
"I see." Jeongyeon smiled at him. "Do you get to see her?" Jungwoon shook his head, and Jeongyeon noticed how passionately Jaebum was staring at his child.
"Will you be my eomma, Jeongyeon noona?" he said, looking up at her. Jaebum shushed him with a slightly harsh, "Ey, Jungwoon-ssi," but Jeongyeon only laughed at how adorable the child was.
"Well, that depends," she replied, flashing Jaebum a look, "if your appa is a big boy enough to ask me out on a date."
Jaebum's monolids grew larger. He did not expect that to happen, but a smile grew on his face yet again. "A date?"
"It wouldn't hurt, right?" Jeongyeon winked.
"But appa is a very busy appa," Jungwoon said, pouting. He was totally aware of how hard his father worked to support the both of them.
Jaebum only smiled. "I might have some time off during the weekend, Jungwoon-ssi," he said, flashing Jeongyeon a look. The girl smiled.
"Really, appa?" Jaebum nodded. "Ask her to go on a date with you!" He was jumping up and down on the cart, and he had to calm him down before doing so.
"What do you say?" he asked Jeongyeon, who was waiting to be asked.
"I would love that," she replied, smiling to the end of her cheeks.
Jungwoon clapped his hands. "Can I come?" He asked his father, and Jaebum raised an eyebrow.
"Dates are not for kids, buddy," he explained.
"But I want to go! I want to go on a date with Jeongyeon noona, too," Jungwoon said, and Jeongyeon laughed again.
"Let him come, appa," Jeongyeon said, and joined Jungwoon in his pouting. The two looked adorable, and Jaebum bit his lip before letting out a small laugh.
"I guess there's room for one more, then," he said, and Jungwoon cheered. Jeongyeon did a high five with him.
Jeongyeon looked at him, and flashed him another smile. "Tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," Jaebum confirmed, both blushing and smiling.
"Tomorrow!" Jungwoon exclaimed again, and the three of them laughed.
"Daebak," she said. "I'll see you tomorrow." She winked at him again, and waved goodbye at Jungwoon, who waved frantically back, before walking away, her gray cardigan flowing behind her.
"She's really nice, appa," Jungwoon said, looking back at his father, who was still staring at her. "She'd make a great eomma." Jaebum laughed and beamed at his child, thankful because somehow, he had gotten him a date, just because he saw him staring.
Yoo Jeongyeon. A pretty name for a pretty face.
