chapter forty-four

"The Elder Wand," Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna's father, drew a line in the middle of a paper after he finished telling us the Tales of the Three Brothers, "the Resurrection Stone," he continued, adding a circle, "and the Invisibility Cloak." He drew a triangle around the other two shapes.

"Oh," Harry said. "Okay."

"Does anyone want tea?" Xenophilius asked.

"Sure."

Xenophilius rushed downstairs and began a pot of tea. I turned to Hermione and said, "Why did you need to visit him? All he's done is tell us a story and that Luna's at the river."

"I keep seeing the symbol on his necklace and this paper in the book Dumbledore gave me. I think it might represent something, and I hoped he could explain what that is."

"I don't like the feel of this place," Ron said.

"Let's go to Luna's room," Harry suggested, standing up.

The three of us followed him upstairs. We entered a small blue room with pictures covering the walls in a thread of golden string that read Friends.

I reached up to touch one of the pictures that featured Harry, Luna, Hermione, and me from Slughorn's Christmas party. When my fingers crossed it, a coat of dust rose into the air, making me cough. I looked around and saw that everything in the room had the same dust.

Harry turned around and we went back down. Xenophilius was approaching with teacups and a pot just as we sat down.

"Mr Lovegood, where is Luna?" I asked.

"Down at the river."

"So she's home for the holidays?"

"Yes."

"But why is there a layer of dust on everything in her bedroom?"

Xenophilius placed the tray of tea on the desk, hands trembling. "S-shall I go check on her?" Without waiting for our answer, he ran downstairs and out of the door.

"We should go, I don't trust him," Ron said.

"Luna's gone," I stated, ignoring him. "She didn't come back after the holidays."

We remained seated, thinking silently to ourselves. Xenophilius came back a few minutes later.

"How's Luna?" I asked.

"T-they took her, my Luna, they took my Luna from the Hogwarts Express."

"Who?"

"Them. The Death Eaters."

"Them—?"

With a bang, the side of the building exploded open, bits of wood raining through the room.

"Go!" I screamed.

"Wait! I have them! I have the Potters!" Xenophilius screamed at the Death Eaters in the sky. "I have the Potter twins!" He grabbed my wrist as I tried to run, so I stomped on his foot, and he let me go.

Hermione ran to me, took my hand in hers, and Disapparated the four of us out of the building.

We touched ground in a new forest, one we hadn't be in yet. It felt strange since we had practically moved to every spot of the forest at this point.

The sun shined down from the middle of the sky, putting an appreciated warmth in the cold air. Harry and I were outside, sitting in the grass right outside of the tent.

"And, well, that's the whole story behind my friendship, or, uh, relationship, with Draco," I said. "Questions?"

"No," Harry said slowly, pausing to think. He stood up suddenly. "I just figured it out! Vol—"

"The name's taboo!" Ron screamed.

"—demort's searching for the Elder Wand!"

I cursed. "Get in the tent."

Harry and I quickly stood up, dashing into the tent and closing the door.

There was a loud pop from right outside; someone had Apparated.

"Come outside! We know you're in there!"

Hermione pointed her wand at Harry and his face began swelling up. She did the same to me, and as soon as her spell hit me, my face became so puffy that I could barely see.

"What did you do?" I asked, but it came out incoherently since my lips were larger than my fingers.

"Come outside! Now!"

We walked outside and the two people, Snatchers, seized us. They tied us all to a small group of people standing together to the left.

"Ron?" Harry mumbled.

"Harry?" a voice said quietly.

"Dean?" Ron whispered.

"Ron!" the voice, apparently Dean, said.

"Alright, you, search the tent," said one Snatcher to the other. "I'll get their names." He walked up to us with a clipboard. "Names."

"Dudley," answered Harry.

"Man, you're ugly. First name?"

"Vernon Dudley," my brother said.

"Huh, no Vernon Dudley on the list. You?"

"R-Ronald Weasley."

"Alright, a Weasley."

"Penelope Clearwater," said Hermione, her voice shaky. "Half-Blood."

"You?"

I thought quickly, saying the first thing that came to mind. "Emily Goyle. Half-blood."

The Snatcher who was in our tent came back out and they grabbed onto one of our arms, Apparating with us.

I looked our new surroundings. There was nothing around us but rolling land for miles. When I looked forward, I saw the Malfoy Manor, a place I had learned to love so dearly even though I had only been there once.

The Snatchers dragged us through the gates and down the path, pausing to knock on the door. In the small time we waited, the Snatchers grabbed everyone's wand.

It opened and we were pulled into the mansion, making me shiver from the sudden chill in the air. We were thrown to the floor.

"Get Draco," hissed Bellatrix. "Now, what have we got here?"

"A Weasley, a goblin, a guy named Dean Thomas, some kid named Vernon Dudley, plus Penelope Clearwater and Emily Goyle," the Snatcher answered.

Bellatrix walked up to us. "Hm. This girl, she looks quite like that Mudblood, Granger. Draco!"

Draco came into the room, gasping audibly when he saw us. His eyes were pained and heavy; he was very obviously stressed and exhausted. I didn't see Star, though. Where was she?

Lucius Malfoy entered the room, pulling his son closer to us. "Draco, are these the Potter twins?"

"I-I can't be sure," he said, looking into my swollen eyes.

"Is this Hermione Granger?"

"I still can't be sure."

"Come on, Draco," said Lucius impatiently. "Imagine how happy the Dark Lord will be when we turn in the Potter twins!"

"I just can't be sure, Father."

Hermione's spell started wearing off and I could slightly see my face going back to normal quickly.

"Check again, Draco. Are these the Potter twins?" Lucius sounded ready to kill a person.

Draco hesitated, looking at me as I shook my head. He looked so tired and it hurt me to see him like this.

"Yes, Father."

I looked at Draco's face but he wouldn't make eye-contact. He was busy looking down at his hands and trying not to cry.

The Snatcher cleared his throat. "I hope you won't be forgetting who found them. Anyway, I have something else that we found."

"And what is that?" Bellatrix demanded. "Where did you get that?" she shrieked.

"I found it in their tent," the Snatcher said, holding up the Sword of Gryffindor.

"Send the twins and the others down to the dungeons," said Bellatrix, pulling Hermione to her. "She's all mine."

The Snatchers started yelling as we were pushed down the stairs to the dungeons, but Bellatrix shushed them quickly.

"No!" Ron shouted as the cell door locked in front of us. The room fell into darkness.

"Stop struggling!" Bellatrix screamed from above us.

"What do we do?" Harry asked, shaking.

"I don't know," I said. "Even if I had my wand, there's a charm down here that makes us unable to use magic."

Ron cursed.

"You're a filthy Mudblood!" screeched Bellatrix. Hermione's screamed echoes throughout the manor, drowning out our thoughts to just flood them with those of worry.

"You Mudblood! Where did you get that sword?"

Hermione was crying now. "W-we didn't . . . we d-didn't take it!"

"LIAR! Where else would you have gotten a sword just like that? Crucio!"

Hermione screamed again.

"I swear!"

"LIAR!"

Another scream.

"You know, Y/n, your boyfriend was kind of a git back there," Harry said sarcastically.

"He's not my boyfriend," I argued, "and he didn't want to give us up, Harry."

"He still did—"

"Get me the goblin!" Bellatrix yelled.

Someone rushed downstairs and Harry and I fell silent. The cell door opened and closed and Wormtail walked in and grabbed a goblin who we hadn't noticed was next to us. They returned to the floor above and I turned back to Harry.

"Wait, Ron," I said, a random idea popping up in my head. "Do you have the Deluminator from Dumbledore?"

"Yeah," Ron answered, pulling out the small tool.

"Use it."

He clicked it on and a few lights flared to life. I looked around and saw Luna Lovegood standing at the back of the large dungeon next to a cowering Ollivander the wand-maker.

"Luna!" I said.

She turned around to face me. "Hi."

Hermione screamed again.

"We need to get out of here, Harry," I stated.

"I know, I know, but how?"

Someone Apparated into the dungeons with a pop. I jumped and turned around to see Dobby the House-eld standing there, having just appeared.

"I'm here to help! Where do you need to go?" Dobby asked, his little voice high but proud.

"Shell Cottage," Ron said, "Bill and Fleur live there. Can you get us out of the dungeons first?"

Dobby nodded, grabbed out hands, and Apparated us onto the floor with Bellatrix.

Hermione was lying in the ground, crying and shaking, her arm bloody and sliced. Bellatrix was standing over her, laughing and holding a knife. In the corner, Draco was standing, watching the scene with a far-off look in his eyes. Lucius and Narcissa were out of the room.

Dobby appeared back on the chandelier, slowly unscrewing it. He jumped off of it as it got loose, grabbed Hermione, Ron, and Harry, then Apparated, leaving me alone with Bellatrix. She screeched and held up her knife, ready to throw it at me, but the chandelier crashed down next to her, sending her flying across the room.

"Y/n!" Draco yelled, suddenly coming back to his senses after the loud sound. He ran across the room to me. "I'm sorry—"

"Come with me, love. We can get you out of here."

"I can't do that, Y/n, not right now, it would kill my parents. I'm sorry." Draco put something in my hand, looking away from me. "Please be safe."

Dobby's small hand hit my shoulder and I waved goodbye to Draco as we Disapparated. Bellatrix threw her knife at us right as we disappeared.

When I fell onto the ground again, it was windy, and Dobby toppled over, clutching his stomach in pain as blood streamed from his new wound. I picked him up quickly and ran down the hill to the cottage, begging for Dobby to stay alive.

He was dead before I even walked through the door.
