THIRD PERSON POV
"Hey hey, have you heard the rumors?"
"The one about the magical girls? Why do you ask?"
"You know, they say once you become one, you're doomed to a life of fighting evil witches."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You know! Evil witches and such! Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight? Did you never watch that show as a kid?"
"You do realize it's eight in the morning, right? I don't have-"
She drowned out the monotonous chatter and rumors, keeping her eyes focused on the shaking floor of the subway beneath her.
Resting on her right pointer finger layed a bright silver ring with a pink gemstone set in the center. It gleamed in the morning sun that shone bright through the small glass panels of the train.
As the time went by and the subway moved forward, her eyes slowly closed and she drowsed off, her mind completely separated from the rest of the normal world.
Her name was (Y/N) (L/N), and she was a magical girl.
─────────────────────
'We are now at the final destination, please take all of your bags before leaving the vehicle. I repeat, we are now-"
A monotone voice called out, waking (Y/N) up from her dozing state. She groaned, before flattening her skirt and walking outside the automated doors.
The sky above was filled to the brim with anything the (H/C)-head could think of, all surrounded by a wilting moon. Opposite to the area above, the ground was quite bare, only having a dirty walkway. A direct contrast to the messy sky.
It wasn't long before she had reached the end of the trail, and at the end were two giant, polished wooden doors. They were around twice as tall as she was, and had ornate golden details wrapped around the edges and handle.
The hinges creaked, but it didn't bother her. She was used to it. Loud footsteps echoed, seemingly booming inside the spacious place of worship.
Giant pastel glass panels displaying images from spider lilies surrounded by floating teeth to mermaids wearing heart covered knight armor decorated the room, staring down at any who chose to enter. (Y/N) ignored their nonexistent gaze, mainly from the one in the center. It reminded her of a bunch of lines contorting into the shape of a ballgown and two skinny arms grasping up at the sky.
The atmosphere had slight sophistication and music notes that were shimmered with an opulent grace, cavorted throughout the extravagant area. With each classical song that began anew, it started mellowly, and gradually faded into sharper violin strokes, and higher piano notes.
Two long pale ears perked up at the girl's arrival. The creature turned around, their expressionless face staring at the girl walking in, seeming expecting her arrival.
"Ah, you're just in time (Y/N), they're about to start."
Their mouth didn't move like a human's would, but (Y/N) knew if it could, it would be curled up in a pleasant grin. (Y/N) took her seat next to them.
The cathedral turned theater was an unknown and quaint place, simply somewhere for fellow magical girls to relax. Most who did come did so only momentarily, using the place as more of a meetup group to discuss tactics with other magical girls.
The lights dimmed and the curtains around the front of the building opened up, revealing a trio of characters.
Three faceless creatures shaped like trees with legs danced along the walkway, their colorful pastel costumes laced with bells and other clown-like accessories as they carried sacks full of heavy objects. Their act was somehow cute yet disturbing.
(Y/N) sighed at the performance, a dullness glazing over her expression. She'd seen the act hundreds of times, and this time was just like all the others.
"Hey Kyubey?"
The pink-and-white creature blinked at her sudden question, its head tilting slightly at an angle like a domesticated animal would look up at their owner. "What's up (Y/N)?"
Now was as good a time as ever to ask, so she might as well.
"There's a rumor going around that two new magical girls are in town now, right? Is it true?"
They confirmed her suspicions with a nod. "Yup. There's two other magical beings in Setagaya. I can't say who, the two wished to remain anonymous."
"Well that's stupid," she huffed, a playful pout growing once her hands grabbed her cheeks and layed down on her knees, "magical girls should work together, it's too dangerous to go out and fight witches alone..."
"It was their decision, not mine. And who knows? Maybe you'll get to meet them yourself." The atmosphere quickly returned to its original setting.
There were about a billion things she could've said, but yet, she stayed silent. Why? She didn't know. The ground seemed very interesting right about now...
Noticing her lack of words, Kyubey continued. "Plus you fight witches alone too, so I don't get why you'd be upset about others doing the same."
"I've been doing this since I was thirteen, Kyubey. I know how to fight witches, they're just getting started with this sort of thing."
"Didn't know you were the type to worry about someone you've never met. You never have before." They replied. She didn't reply to their snarky sounding comment.
As their conversation slowly came to a closing, so did the performance that was held. The trio bowed before their small audience, before melting down into small, sentient puddles of goo that returned back behind the now closing curtains.
"So what do you think? You gonna try and meet them sometime?" Kyubey stared up at her, their expressionless face awaiting an answer.
"We'll see." (Y/N) said, gazing down at the ground. Confetti specks fell down on her cheeks.
─────────────────────
It was a casual Friday afternoon. The rain from a few hours before had just begun to settle down, leaving only a humid feel to the air and small moisture along grass and other plants.
(Y/N) kicked a small rock in front of her, watching it slightly skip along the damp sidewalk before crashing down and falling off into an open manhole. For some reason, watching the tiny rock fall made her (E/C) eyes twinkle with glee.
She felt like laughing at the idea of such a small action bringing her any sense of enjoyment.
Four cars crossed the intersection road, the tires rolling across puddles of water and splashing them to the ground near her, but she paid them no mind. If anything, the repetitive sound was actually calming.
Another person wearing a monochromatic uniform and holding a crimson red umbrella walked up to the curb, watching the yellow walk sign turn to a certain shade of green.
"Oh, hi Akira."
Akira Kurusu, a recent transfer to Shujin Academy. Multiple rumors about the reason for his sudden transfer had spread throughout the school, the most common one being assault.
Even though that sounded like utter crap, it was what everyone had believed. She'd sat right behind him in a few classes, but never actually talked to him. If anything she was just like a background character from his point of view.
Akira smiled softly, a light shade of pink blush growing on his face, barely visible. "Hey (Y/N). Long school day huh? You look pretty tired." (Y/N) nodded to his question. An awkward silence soon filled the air. It's not as if they had a bad history between each other, more so it was just that type of day.
He noticed her staring at the umbrella. "Brought it in case it was going to rain more, guess I was wrong."
"You never know, it could start again later tonight."
"Probably not." (Y/N) could've sworn she heard a small mewl come from his bag. Akira cursed under his breath and, without warning, proceded to give his bag a small but slight jab of the elbow.
He laughed nervously, scratching the back of his head as (Y/N) stared him down confusedly. "Text notification." The black haired boy didn't give her a chance to respond, simply turning around and walking the other way, away from her.
'Doesn't he live somewhere over here though..?' Whatever. It wasn't her problem. She had more important business to attend to.
(Y/N) walked across the now empty street and into an abandoned alleyway, watching her back to make sure no one was nearby.
"Thankfully no one's around..."
Letting out a deep breath she didn't even know she was holding, (Y/N) held out her hand to reveal the small metal ring around her middle finger enlarge and change form to that of a pink gem, encased by the silhouette of a silver birdcage. The soul gem was glowing in the palm of her hand.
"Might as well get to work."
─────────────────────
"Gyah!"
Piles of destroyed mannequin bodies wearing now dirtied and torn up school uniforms laid waste across the labyrinth that (Y/N) had foolishly entered. If she had known it would've been this difficult, she would have simply just left it to some other magical girl.
(Y/N) kneeled down, holding her rapier by her side for support. Her brief moment of rest didn't last long. (H/C) hair swayed as she entered her battle stance once more, albeit shaking and covered in bloody scratches.
"I... I can still... fight... bring it on!" She sluggishly said. She grimaced at the sight; dozens upon dozens of the witch's familiars, all making their way towards her location. It was almost as if they were feeding off of her fear, consuming her strength and making it their own. And if that was true, then they were going to be having a feast pretty soon.
She called forth rapiers from the ground to tear through some or at least block their movement, but it was like using a shield to defend against a flood.
Adorable voices laughing, like bells ringing, traveled on the wind.
They laughed at her weakness.
They laughed at her despair.
She could feel the black mist spreading, creeping around the edges of the pink star shaped gem fastened around her wrist.
(Y/N) braced for impact.
.
.
"Get away from her!"
Bundles of the 'students' were blasted into the air by magical power as a giant curved blade emerged out of the ceiling, separating her bloody self from the rest.
Another magical person had entered the labyrinth. How the hell did she not notice before? The witches domain was small enough to notice any changes in any magic abilities.
Five more scythes had emerged by the person's side, their red and black handles almost seeming to glow in the dim light of the labyrinth. The magical person yelled a scream full of determination as they thrusted themselves and their multiple weapons towards the witch.
Their weapon was sleek, almost flawless in every way. Crimson red jewels were encrusted along the rim where blade met handle, moldings of delicate swirls and spirals guiding the eye across the scythe.
Lavender hued roses exuded from the wounds the magical boy had created, falling down to the grassy floor and immediately wilting the small radius around the fallen flowers.
What sounded like a distorted lion's roar was in fact the witches cry of anguish. As a last resort, the witch raised a giant, bladed ruler into the air, and threw it down to the two trespassers.
It had no effect on the stranger. Utterly useless. Just as quickly as the witch had appeared, it vanished, leaving only behind a small silver and black sphere the size of a pearl. The figure picked up the grief seed, examined it for some time, then threw the seed towards (Y/N). They didn't say why, only leaving (Y/N) confused as she looked up.
Clad in a slightly frilly black and crimson outfit that oddly reminded her of the Shujin school uniform was the silhouette of a boy, probably in his late teens. He wore a monochrome mask, designed with a bridlike and domino style. The figure gently grabbed the veil and lifted it off, leaving his face visible for all to see.
He turned to face the now aghast girl.
"Surprised to see me (Y/N)?"
(Y/N) stared at the dressed up boy in confusion. She had heard of magical boys, but she thought they were just a joke created up by some bored stranger on the internet. She never actually believed they were real.
"Akira?"
Akira smirked in reply. The world around them had returned back to normal, and thankfully so did their costumes. Although her school uniform now had slight specks of dirt with some wear and tear, it was better than that other bloody outfit. Akira seemed thankful too, taking a huge sigh of relief as he leaned back against the wall of a nearby building.
(Y/N) immediately summoned her rapier and stepped away from the boy. "When the hell did you make the deal?"
"Is that really how you treat the person who saved your life? I honestly expected more out of you."
He was right, he did just save her from certain death. (Y/N) mumbled a few curse words under her breath before making the weapon in her hand disappear. "Sorry, it's just weird seeing someone like you be well..." she gestured towards the space where the rapier used to be. "Like this. Also, where's your ring? You have to have one, y'know, and I don't see you wearing it now."
Akira gave a small wave of his hand. "It's in my pocket. I only put it on for emergencies, like just then. And speaking of..."
"Why were you in that labyrinth at all?" He asked as if he didn't already know the obvious answer. On top of that, he was avoiding her original statement. "All by yourself, I mean. You could've gotten killed!"
Her pride held her back from saying a few words of thanks, instead choosing to look down at her feet and roll her heels back and forth on the concrete floor like a guilty child. "I didn't think it would be that difficult."
The black eyed boy grunted with frustration, more so at himself, but he didn't let her know that. "You still have that grief seed, right?" Akira sighed, although (Y/N) couldn't tell if it was out of exhaustion or annoyance. Probably the latter. Either way, she nodded yes in response, opening her right hand so it was visible.
"You can keep it. I already have enough to last me some time."
(Y/N) then proceded to place the grief seed inside of her school bag, deciding to use the purifying energy locked inside of it later when she was alone. An awkward silence floated around the two before she decided to speak once more.
"You... are the new magical person Kyubey was talking about, right?"
"I would assume so. As far as I know, I've been the latest rookie in this town."
(Y/N) grunted as she recalled their previous conversation, and the fact that she had even asked him about something quite similar wasn't exactly helping. She buried her head in her hands with embarrassment showing bright red on her cheeks. No matter what (Y/N) thought, she just couldn't put her finger on it. Something was off.
How did he know I was there?
She pushed that thought inside, instead choosing to focus her attention on the person before her. She didn't exactly have the energy to care either.
Snapping (Y/N) out of her thoughts, Akira suddenly spoke up. "We can talk more about this tomorrow, okay? It's getting pretty late."
(Y/N) suddenly felt a droplet of water fall down on her nose. Then another, then another. She looked up and saw the gray clouds in the sky grow heavy with water.
Akira let out a breathless laugh at the sight. "And to think I thought it wasn't going to rain anymore..."
"At least you got that umbrella with you." (Y/N) tried to lift up his spirits, but it was obvious it wasn't working. Her hair and clothes were already growing wet from the rapid pace of the rain.
"Actually," his pale cheeks blushed a rosy pink as he held the bright red umbrella over to her, "my place is pretty close to here, I'll be fine if I run. You live further away though, so you can have it."
Without giving her a chance to decline his offer, Akira thrusted the handle in her hands and turned the other way, the soles of his shoes pounding hard against the wet concrete.
(Y/N) watched him go empty handed. Leaving him to walk alone in the rain.
