XXVI
Johnny, Pansy, Daphne, Blaise, and Theo gathered around a table eating breakfast on the balcony in the Amalfi Coast.
Johnny took a sip of his coffee and glanced at his friends, who were discussing the day's plans.
"I heard there's a hidden beach not far from here," Daphne said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "We should definitely check it out."
Blaise leaned back in his chair, "I could use a break from all the bloody walking."
"Do you even own swim shorts?" Theo teased, raising an eyebrow. "I thought you were only about that 'mysterious brooding' look."
Blaise shot him a playful glare. "I own multiple swim shorts, thank you very much."
Pansy laughed, nudging Johnny with her elbow. "What about you, J? Are you coming?"
"Haven't got much else to do," he said, smiling slightly at her which caused her to flush.
After breakfast, they decided to explore the nearby village.
"Look at that!" Daphne pointed excitedly at a shop selling jewelry. The three boys groaned in annoyance as Pansy and Daphne walked inside.
They wandered inside, Pansy finding herself drawn to a delicate silver bracelet engraved with a wave pattern.
"Are you going to buy it?" Johnny asked, peering over her shoulder.
"No, I left my money at the villa," she replied. She walked away, frowning to herself. When she wasn't looking, Johnny snagged the bracelet and heading towards the counter.
"What've you bought?" Blaise asked when they left the store, Daphne and Pansy out in front of them. His eyes were glued to the wrapped parcel in Johnny's hands.
"Nothing," Johnny murmured, a blush creeping up his neck as he pushed the box into his pocket. After spending the afternoon at the beach, the five made it back to the villa where they settled down for their evening meal.
Just as Johnny was about to tuck into his food, the Daily Prophet owl arrived with the evening addition of the newspaper.
"Anybody got five knuts on them?" Johnny asked, standing up from his seat at the head of the table and approaching the stone wall overlooking the coast.
Theo hummed, handing Johnny the correct change which Johnny dropped into the pouch around the owls neck before untying the paper, freezing as he looked at the front cover.
A moving picture of his father, Jakob Grindelwald, holding an Azkaban sign and looking crazed covered most of it.
GRINDELWALD STILL AT LARGE
Jakob Grindelwald, possibly the most infamous prisoner ever to be held in Azkaban fortress, is still eluding capture, the Ministry of Magic confirmed today.
"We are doing all we can to recapture Grindelwald," said the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, this morning, "and we beg the magical community to remain calm."
Fudge has been criticised by some members of the International Confederation of Wizards for informing the Muggle Prime Minister of the crisis.
"Well, really, I had to, don't you know," said an irritable Fudge. "Grindelwald is mad, and I'd have good money on that good-for-nothing son of his is the same! He's a danger to anyone who crosses him, magic or Muggle. I have the Prime Minister's assurance that he will not breathe a word of Grindelwald's true identity to anyone. And let's face it — who'd believe him if he did?"
While Muggles have been told that Grindelwald is carrying a gun (a kind of metal wand that Muggles use to kill each other), the magical community lives in fear of a massacre like that of twelve years ago, when Grindelwald thirteen people with a single curse.
"What's the matter, J?" Pansy asked, who was sat closest to him. She gently grabbed his hand, rubbing her thumb over his knuckles. Her touch broke Johnny out of his trance.
Johnny silently passed the paper over to her, the others crowding around her to get a better look.
"Oh shit," they all said in unison.
