────── Chapter 5

7 Months Later...

Agony seized Shadoweaver as she lay in her nest, her razor-sharp claws digging deep into the ground. She knew that laying eggs would be painful, but nothing could have prepared her for the intensity of the sensation coursing through her body.

"Why does it have to hurt so much?" she groaned, her voice laced with anguish. She had faced countless battles, endured countless injuries, but nothing compared to the searing pain that consumed her now.

As another wave of torment washed over her, Shadoweaver closed her eyes and focused on her breath. She would endure this; she had to. Her resolve hardened, and she braced herself for what was to come.

The thundering footsteps approaching her nest coaxed Shadoweaver to settle down further, and soon she felt a warm, comforting presence envelop her. Godzilla's tongue gently licked the top of her head, offering solace. "Calm down now, take it easy," he soothed, continuing his gentle ministrations. "You're almost done, you've almost got them all out."

Shadoweaver leaned into his touch, taking comfort in his presence. Despite the pain, she was grateful to have him by her side, a constant reminder that she wasn't alone in this.

A sharp bolt of pain shot through Shadoweaver, and she felt an egg slide out of her body. Godzilla murmured something, but her agony drowned out his words. Finally, the ordeal seemed to come to an end, as two more eggs emerged, followed by a long, deep sigh.

Shadoweaver hoped this would be the last of the eggs. She couldn't bear the thought of laying any more, but a nagging worry remained. She knew MUTOs often produced millions of eggs, though many didn't survive.

Godzilla shifted beside her, his voice filled with concern. "How are you holding up?"

Shadoweaver managed a weak nod. "I'm okay. Just...exhausted."

The colossal creature gently nudged her with his snout, offering what comfort he could. "Rest now. You've earned it."

Shadoweaver stirred, gradually becoming aware of the emptiness within her. The eggs had ceased their movement, and the bulge in her abdomen had diminished. A profound sense of relief washed over her as she realized that she was no longer carrying the burden of MUTO offspring.

Her strength slowly returned, and she rose to her feet, taking in her surroundings with newfound clarity. Despite the ordeal she had just endured, a spark of hope flickered within her—the nightmare was over, and a new chapter lay ahead.

Godzilla stood by her side, licking the space between her neck and head affectionately. She chuckled softly and pushed him away with her wing. "Stop it!" she playfully scolded. "I'm going to take a quick flight. Will you watch the eggs?"

Godzilla rumbled in response, his gaze never leaving the nest as she stretched her wings and took to the sky. The feeling of freedom surged through her veins as she soared higher and higher, the weight of her burden lifted from her shoulders. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Shadoweaver felt truly free.

A sudden terror gripped Shadoweaver as a missile whizzed past her, narrowly missing its target. She spun around, hurtling back towards the nest at breakneck speed. Godzilla looked up in alarm as she landed beside him, panting heavily.

"My dear, what's happening?" he asked, concern etched on his reptilian features. His nostrils flared as he lifted his head, catching a whiff of an unfamiliar scent. "No...not again," he rumbled, a low growl building in his throat.

The air grew tense as the threat became apparent. The peace Shadoweaver and Godzilla had briefly tasted now hung precariously in the balance, the echoes of their past struggles returning to haunt them once more.

"The humans have found us," Shadoweaver seethed, lashing out at a nearby tree with her tail. "I hate humans!" She stretched her wings wide, then folded them close to her body as she lay protectively over her nest. "I won't let them harm my eggs," she declared, her voice laced with fury.

Godzilla nodded solemnly, his own anger simmering beneath the surface. They had been through so much, only to have their hard-won peace threatened once again. He took his place beside Shadoweaver, his imposing stature a formidable deterrent to any who might dare approach.

"We will defend our home, no matter the cost," he vowed, his resolve unwavering.

The unmistakable sound of wingbeats drew both Godzilla and Shadoweaver's attention skyward. A stunningly beautiful summer bird gracefully landed in the clearing, her vibrant plumage glinting in the sunlight. Godzilla growled, "Who are you and what are you doing here?"

The mysterious bird smiled serenely and dipped her head in a show of respect. "Your call has been heard, my King. It is time for you to take your rightful place upon the throne."

Her words hung heavy in the air, their meaning clear yet elusive. Godzilla and Shadoweaver exchanged a glance, both sensing that this enigmatic arrival heralded a shift in their destiny.

Shadoweaver gazed at the avian visitor, uncertainty clouding her features. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and suspicion.

The summer bird smiled warmly in response. "I am Mothra, protector of humankind and loyal ally to King Godzilla."

Her words echoed through the clearing, the implications rippling through the air like the beat of a wing. Shadoweaver and Godzilla exchanged a look of surprise—the arrival of such a powerful ally was both unexpected and fortuitous.

The monarch of the monsters nodded gravely, his eyes never leaving Mothra's radiant form. "And why have you come to us now?"

Mothra's voice took on a somber tone as she addressed Godzilla and Shadoweaver. "A new threat looms on the horizon. This foe seeks to either destroy you both, or solely claim the life of your mate, leaving you to suffer in solitude." She gestured with a shimmering golden wing towards Shadoweaver, who protectively hunkered down over her eggs.

Shadoweaver's heart pounded in her chest, her instincts screaming at her to defend her unborn offspring at all costs. Godzilla's gaze hardened, his own resolve unwavering in the face of this dire news.

"And what manner of enemy do we face?" he inquired, his voice carrying a steely edge.

Mothra's smirk hung in the air as she took flight, her form engulfed by a brilliant burst of sunlight. Her final word, 'dragon,' reverberated through the clearing, leaving Godzilla and Shadoweaver to contemplate the enigmatic warning.

A dragon—a formidable adversary, steeped in myth and legend. They could only imagine the power and cunning such a creature might possess.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, a chill crept through the air. The two creatures exchanged a determined glance, their resolve firm in the face of this unknown danger. They would stand united against this new enemy, their bond unbreakable as they defended their home and their future.
