(A/N: I changed the Project Insight part so that it would be 4 helicarriers instead of 3)
Aaron waited for Steve near the entrance of the hospital. He was also looking around in case any S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were around.
Thankfully, there weren't any as he saw Steve, who was wearing a blue hoodie and had his hood up, walking towards him.
Aaron: Were you followed?
Steve: No. You?
Aaron: No. Let's get the drive and get out of here.
They walk into the hospital and approached the vending machine, but they saw something that baffled them.
The drive, plus all of the bubble gum that it was hidden behind, were gone?
Aaron: (confused) What?
Suddenly, they saw Natasha and Bobbi through the reflection of the glass, with the former blowing a bubble of gum before popping it and putting it in her mouth.
They turn to face the two women before Steve suddenly grabbed Natasha by the shoulders and pushed her through the door behind them. Aaron and Bobbi followed as Aaron closed the door and Bobbi checked the blinds to make sure that they didn't cause too much noise.
Steve pushed Natasha into a wall before taking off his hood.
Aaron: Cap!
Bobbi: Hey!
Steve: (to Natasha) Where is it?
Natasha: Safe.
Steve: Do better.
Natasha: Where did you get it?
Aaron: Why should we tell you?
Natasha: Fury gave it to you, why?
Steve: What's on it?
Natasha: I don't know.
Steve: Stop lying!
Natasha: I only act like I know everything, Rogers.
Steve: (looks around before turning to Natasha) I bet you knew Fury hired those pirates, didn't you?
Natasha: Well, it makes sense, the ship was dirty, Fury needed a way in, so did you.
Steve: I'm not gonna ask you again.
Natasha: ...I know who killed Fury.
Aaron: (widens his eyes) Wait, what?
Bobbi: I know, just...hear her out.
Natasha: ...Most of the intelligence community doesn't believe he exists, the ones that do call him The Winter Soldier. He's credited with over two dozen assassinations in the last 50 years.
Steve: So, he's a ghost story.
Natasha: 5 years ago, I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran, somebody shot out my tires near Odessa. We lost control , went straight over a cliff, I pulled us out, but The Winter Soldier was there. I was covering my engineer, so he shot him...straight through me.
She lifts her shirt to reveal a scar that resembled a gunshot wound.
Natasha: Soviet slug, no rifling. Bye-bye, bikinis. The only people who know about him besides me are Clint and Bobbi, because I told them what happened.
Aaron turns to Bobbi, who nodded in conformation.
Natasha: Going after him is a dead end. I know, I've tried. (takes out the drive) Like you said, he's a ghost story.
Aaron takes the drive from Natasha.
Steve: So we find out what the ghost wants.
Timeskip
The four were at a mall, wearing their disguises.
Natasha: First rule of going on the run is don't run, walk.
Steve: If I run in these shoes, they're gonna fall off.
They walk into an Apple store and approached a laptop. Aaron decided to decrypt the drive himself, since he was the smartest out of the four of them, so it would be faster if he did it.
Natasha: The drive has a level 6 homing program, so as soon as we boot up, S.H.I.E.L.D. will know exactly where we are.
Steve: How much time do we have?
Bobbi: 9 minutes as soon as we plug the drive in.
Aaron: Okay.
He takes a deep breath as he prepares to plug the drive into the computer.
Aaron: Okay, Bobbi. (plugs in the drive) Time me.
He began typing away at the computer.
Aaron: Well, looks like Fury was right about the ship, someone's trying to hide something. The drive's protected by an A.I. of some kind, and it keeps rewriting itself to counter my commands.
Steve: Can you override it?
Aaron: (smirks) Whoever developed this is pretty good...But I can take the challenge.
He kept typing away as the other three kept a lookout.
Aaron: I'll try running a tracer. It's a program that could be used to track down hostile malware, so if we can't read the file, maybe we can find its source.
???: Can I help you guys with anything?
Aaron was about to speak before Natasha spoke up.
Natasha: (wraps her arms around Steve's neck) No, my cousin and her friend were helping me and my fiancΓ© pick out some honeymoon destinations.
Steve: Right, we're getting married.
Aaron: (smirks) Been a long time coming.
Apple Employee: Congratulations. Where are you guys thinking about going?
Aaron managed to find the source of the file, which is in New Jersey.
Aaron: (turns to Natasha and Steve) Does New Jersey sound good to you guys?
Natasha: (looks at the screen) That's not bad, actually.
Apple Employee: Huh.
Silence formed between the five when the employee began examining Steve.
Apple Employee: I have the exact same glasses.
Bobbi: Oh, wow. You two are practically twins.
Apple Employee: (chuckles) Yeah, I wish. (gestures to Steve) Specimen. If you guys need anything, I've been Aaron.
Steve: Thank you.
The employee walks away. Bobbi turned to Aaron and was about to speak before Aaron beat her to it.
Aaron: I'm sure there are a lot of Aarons in Maryland.
He kept typing in the computer to narrow down the location.
Steve: Come on, kid, she said 9 minutes.
Aaron: Aaaand...Got it.
The source of the file was Wheaton, New Jersey.
The three turn to Steve, who seemed to recognize the place.
Bobbi: You know Wheaton?
Steve: I used to. Let's go.
Aaron pulled out the drive and put it in his pocket.
Natasha: You and Bobbi go to the south side, Steve and I will go to the north. We'll meet at the parking lot.
Aaron: Sounds like a plan.
The four exit the store and split into two groups of two, Steve and Natasha, Aaron and Bobbi.
Aaron: I'll follow your lead, you're more experienced in that arena than me.
Bobbi: Okay.
The two kept walking when they noticed four agents walking towards them, two behind and two ahead.
Bobbi: Put your arm around me, laugh at something I said.
Aaron does so as the agents walk past them. They kept walking until they reached the escalator. They managed to get to the parking lot without anymore problems.
They met up with Natasha and Steve, with the former acting a little awkward. It was subtle, but Aaron noticed. He decided to think nothing of it as Steve managed to hot-wire a blue pick-up truck, to everyone's surprise.
The four entered the truck and drove out of the parking lot and made their way to Wheaton.
Timeskip
The quarter had just entered New Jersey as Steve drove with Natasha in the passenger seat, and Aaron and Bobbi in the back seat.
Natasha: Where did Captain America learn how to steal a car?
Steve: Nazi Germany. And we're burrowing, take your feet off the dash.
Natasha reluctantly did so as she decided to ask something.
Natasha: Alright, I have a question for you, Of, which you do nor have to answer. I feel like if you don't answer it, though, that's kind of answering it, y'know?
Steve: What?
Natasha: Was that your first kiss since 1945?
Aaron: (wide-eyed) What?!
Bobbi: You guys kissed?!
Steve: Can we not?
Aaron: Oh, come on, Cap. It couldn't be that bad.
Bobbi: Did you have any practice beforehand, or did you just go with the flow?
Steve: I don't need practice.
Natasha: Everybody needs practice.
Steve: It was not my first kiss since 1945. I'm 95, I'm not dead.
Natasha: Nobody special, then?
Aaron tensed up a bit. Natasha didn't know about Peggy.
Steve: (chuckles) Believe it or not, it's kind of hard to find someone a with shared life experience.
Natasha: That's alright, just make something up.
Steve: What, like you?
Natasha: I don't know, the truth is a matter of circumstance, it's not all things to all people, all the time. And neither am I.
Steve: That's a tough way to live.
Natasha: It's a good way not to die, though.
Steve: You know, it's kind of hard to trust someone when you don't know who that someone really is.
Natasha: Yeah...What do you want me to be?
Steve: How about a friend?
Natasha: (chuckles) There's a chance you might be in the wrong business. Rogers.
Steve smiles softly as he kept driving.
Natasha: (to Aaron) What about you, Aaron? Anyone special in your life?
Aaron: Uhh...no, not yet. (mumbles to himself) Couldn't shit have waited to hit the fan after the date?
Unfortunately, Natasha and Steve heard him.
Natasha: Wait, you were going on a date?
Aaron: Uhhhh...
Natasha: (smirks) Well, don't leave me hanging, O'Connor. Who's the lucky girl?
Aaron and Bobbi quickly glanced at each other before averting each other's gazes. Natasha and Steve noticed and got the hint.
Steve: (smirks) Well, it's been a long time coming.
Aaron: (chuckles) Okay.
They kept quiet as they kept driving.
Timeskip
The four arrived at Wheaton. More specifically, Camp Lehigh
Aaron: Is this it?
Natasha: The file came from these coordinates.
Steve: (sees the sign) So did I.
They entered the camp as Natasha looked for a signal and Steve, Aaron, and Bobbi.
Aaron: You were trained here, weren't you?
Steve: Yeah.
Bobbi: Did it change much?
Steve: (looks at a flag pole) A little.
They looked around in silence before Natasha broke the silence.
Natasha: This is a dead end. Zero heat signatures, zero waves, not even radio.
Aaron: (sighs exasperatedly) I swear to God, if we came all the way out here for nothing...
They notice Steve looking at a building suspiciously.
Bobbi: What is it?
Steve began walking towards the building, prompting the others to follow.
Steve: Army regulations forbid storing munitions within 500 yards from the barracks.
Bobbi: So this building's in the wrong place.
Steve: Exactly.
He uses his shield to break the lock.
They enter the building as Aaron flicks a switch, causing the light to turn on to reveal an abandoned facility with a familiar logo on its walls.
Natasha: This is S.H.I.E.L.D.
Steve: Maybe where it started.
The four walked in an archive room and to a wall that contained pictures of the founders, which included two particular people.
Bobbi: There's Tony's dad.
Steve: Howard.
Natasha: Who's the girl?
Steve didn't respond as he walked to a shelf.
The two women were confused by this, so Aaron answered.
Aaron: That's Peggy Carter. He's a bit sensitive about her.
They nod in response when Aaron noticed Steve inspecting a shelf.
Aaron: Hey, Cap? What's up?
He, Natasha, and Bobbi walked up to Steve.
Steve: If you're already working in a secret office...
He grabbed the shelf and pulled it aside, revealing a hidden hallway with an elevator at the end of it.
Steve: Why do you need to hide an elevator?
They walked up to the elevator and they noticed a keypad.
Steve: Can you use your speed with this?
Aaron: Not without S.H.I.E.L.D. knowing where we are.
Natasha scanned the keypad with her to reveal the passcode. She typed it in as the elevator door opened. The quartet entered the elevator and it began to descend.
The elevator stopped and the door opened to reveal a dark room. As they stepped out of the elevator, the elevators flickered on to reveal an old server room with a massive computer in the middle.
Aaron: (confused) This can't be right. The tech here is too old.
Bobbi: Not all of it.
She point to a modern USB port. Natasha took out the drive and plugged it into the port, causing more light to flicker on and the servers to activate.
Suddenly, the computer spoke.
???: INITIATE SYSTEM?
Natasha walked to the keyboard and typed.
Natasha: (typing) Y-E-S spells yes.
She hits the enter button as the computer began booting up.
Natasha: (sinisterly) Shall we play a game? (speaks normally and turns to Steve) It's from a movie that was really-
Steve: I know, I saw it with Aaron.
The computer began beeping as the middle screen flickered on to reveal a green...face-thing.
The camera on top of the screen turned to Steve.
???: Rogers, Steven. Born 1918.
The camera turns to Natasha.
???: Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna. Born 1984.
The camera turns to Bobbi:
???: Morse, Barbara. Born 1992.
The camera finally turns to Aaron.
???: O'Connor, Aaron. Born 1996. The perfect candidate.
Aaron: (confused) What?
Bobbi: Don't bother with that, Aaron, it's just a recording.
???: I am not a recording, FrΓ€ulein. I may not be the man I was when the Captain took me prisoner in 1945, but I am.
The smaller screen on the right showed a picture of a man with a big forehead, receding hairline, and large round glasses.
Natasha: (turns to Steve) You know this thing?
Steve: (walks around the computer) Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for the Red Skull. He's been dead for years.
Zola: First correction, I am Swiss. Second. Look around you. I have never felt more alive. In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body. My mind, however, that was worth saving, on 200,000 feet of databanks. You are standing in my brain.
Steve: How did you get here?
Zola: Invited.
Bobbi: Operation Paperclip.
Steve: What's that?
Natasha: After World War II, S.H.I.E.L.D. recruited German scientists with strategic value.
Zola: They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own.
Aaron: Why'd you call me the perfect candidate? Candidate for what?
Zola: A living weapon that will help us thrive and dominate.
Aaron: (in his head) No, there's no way...
Steve: HYDRA died with the Red Skull.
Zola: Cut off one head, two more shall take its place.
Steve: Prove it.
Several screen began showing old documents and footage.
Zola: Accessing archive. HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realize was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist.
He showed footage of Steve fighting a HYDRA soldier and leading a group of soldiers into the battlefield.
Zola: The war taught us much. Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly. After the war, S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded, and I was recruited. The new HYDRA grew. A beautiful parasite inside S.H.I.E.L.D.. For 70 years, HYDRA has been secretly feeding crisis, reaping war, and when history did not cooperate, history was changed.
He showed a picture of The Winter Soldier aiming a sniper rifle.
Natasha: That's impossible, S.H.I.E.L.D. would've stopped you.
Zola: Accidents will happen.
He showed them an article that talked about the death of Howard and Maria Stark and Nick Fury's death certificate.
The four were all shocked, but none more so than Steve. He truly thought he stopped HYDRA when he crashed the Valkyrie into the Arctic, but they've been secretly instigating every tragedy that happened since then.
Zola: HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom to gain its security.
He showed them Project Insight and how the four helicarriers eliminate targets.
Zola: Once the purification process is complete, HYDRA's new world order will arise. We won, Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your life. A zero sum.
In a fit of rage, Steve punched the middle so hard that it cracked.
Zola redirects his ugly coded face to a smaller screen.
Zola: As I was saying...
Aaron: The hell's on this drive?!
Zola: Project Insight requires insight. So, I wrote an algorithm.
Bobbi: What kind of algorithm? what does it do?
Zola: The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it.
Suddenly, the elevator began to get blocked by a steel door. Steve threw his shield at it in an attempt to jam it, but it fully closed, causing the shield to bounce off it and back to Steve's hand.
Natasha took out her phone saw what was happening.
Natasha: Guys, we got a bogey. Short range ballistic. 30 seconds tops.
Bobbi: Who fired it?
Natasha: S.H.I.E.L.D.
Zola: I am afraid I have been stalling, Captain.
Natasha took the drive out of the port.
Zola: Admit it, it's better this way...
Steve looked around and saw a grate on the floor. He ran to it and ripped it off the floor.
Steve: Come on!
Zola: We are, both of us, out of time...
Natasha, Bobbi, and Aaron ran to the open grate. Natasha went in first, followed by Bobbi then Aaron.
Zola: Such a waste...
The missile hit the building they were in. Fortunately, Steve went into the grate and covered Natasha with his shield while Aaron cover Bobbi with his body as the building collapsed over them.
After the debris settled, Steve pushed the rubble off them as he and Natasha climbed out. Unfortunately, Bobbi was unconscious.
Aaron: Bobbi? Bobbi, hey, wake up!
Natasha: Come on, we have to go!
Aaron nods before carrying Bobbi bridal style and getting out of the ruins before S.H.I.E.L.D. finds them.
They made it back to the truck. Steve went into the driver's seat, Natasha went in the passenger seat, while Aaron and Bobbi settled in the back seat, with Aaron putting Bobbi's head on his lap.
Steve started the car and drove away from the camp.
