Chloe
I stood there and watched as Joe held our daughter closer to him. I could tell that he was missing all of us and it broke me. Every night has felt empty, cold, and desolate.
While I stayed for another two hours to spend time with my husband, it was starting to get late outside and I always feared being out late at night alone; in which Joe understood. Given that I'm a woman and there's a lot of crimes that happen late at night, it made me anxious.
"Hey babe, I need to get back home. You know I hate being out alone in the dark."
"I understand baby. I'll miss you." He says, "Make sure to call or message me when you and Alani made it back home."
"You know I will."
I picked up Alani and brought her back into the baby carrier and she started to fall asleep after resting in my husband's arms. I pressed my lips against his and before I was about to leave the room, I happened to notice that Joe was laying in the bed with that warm smile on his face.
"Drive safely, okay?"
"I will!"
I hated leaving Joe all alone inside of the hospital room. I was praying for a miracle to happen and that he could have a speedy recovery after taking several bullet wounds to the chest.
Before I stepped into my car after getting Alani adjusted and buckled-in her seatbelt, I received a text from Josh.
"Hey, we wanted to spend some time with you for awhile before we had to head back on the road."
I replied, "Sure. I'd love to hang out with you three for awhile. I'm about to head back home anyways after I get some gas in the car."
"Bet." He says, "When will you be back home?"
"Roughly in a half hour. I went to see Joe for awhile in the hospital and he looks like he's recovering fast. I'll explain more once we see each other."
I put my phone in my pocket and made my way over to the gas station and paid an unnecessary amount of money just to put some gas into the car. After filling up the gas a few minutes later, I drove back home to my Toronto home and waited for Joe's cousins to arrive. In the meantime, I turned on the television and played some Bluey for Alani while I cleaned around the house and sent Joe a message that we arrived home safely to ease his worries.
Although the home was always damn near spotless, I still proceeded to dust off small areas of the house and did some laundry. It wasn't long until I heard my doorbell ringing and it was Jonathan, Josh, and Joseph standing over at the front door.
I welcomed them with open arms and I was greeted with hugs in return from all three men.
"Hey Chloe. I know you said that our cousin was making improvements, but what's happening with him?" Josh asked.
"Nothing much. He said one of the nurses has helped him get up and stand for awhile, along with walking. He hates being far away from home and he's trying his hardest to get discharged from the hospital."
"That's good progress if he's starting to revert back his old, normal-goofy self like before!" Jonathan flashed a smile.
"It's been awhile since we seen Joe, man. Hopefully he comes out soon." Joseph added.
While I was having Joe's cousins over again for the night, I happened to notice that Josh was sitting around the piano while the other two were babysitting my daughter a couple of hours after their arrival.
"Whatcha doing, Josh?"
"Oh, nothing. I'm just fiddling around with the piano for awhile." He smiled, "I used to actually play the piano when I was younger."
"You did? I had no idea."
"Yeah, Uce. I always loved playing on the piano here and there as a kid. Joe used to give me shit for it as a joke." He chuckled.
"That sounds like him. He's always teasing the people he cares about."
"Yeet." He flashed a smile, "I wanted to play a small sample on the piano if you'd like."
"I'd love to hear it, Josh."
Josh took a moment to compose himself before bringing his fingers over the the keys and before I knew it, he was a natural on the piano. The notes were beautiful and melodic. I never knew that anyone in Joe's family partaken in the wonderful art of music until tonight. I sat down next to him and closed my eyes while listening to the melody play throughout my ears.
After Josh had stopped a few minutes later, he looked back at me with a smile, "How was that?"
"That was beautiful. I never knew you played until now!"
"Makes me wish that I played the piano at y'all's wedding, you know?"
"If I knew that you were talented on the piano, I would've hired you on the spot. You definitely have a talent and I don't know why you don't express yourself when it comes to music."
"I just got all caught up with wrestling with my brother and then Joseph joined the company; I guess you can say it slipped my mind." He chuckled.
"Well, you're an amazing pianist. Someday you should show this talent off to the entire world. I know your fans would love to see another side of you that they've never seen before."
"Yeah, you're definitely right." He flashed a smile, "It's funny because I made Jonathan and Joseph watch over her. I just wanted to come over here to myself and play the piano because it's been a few years since I've played."
I reeled Josh into a hug, "You can do anything you set your mind to, Josh. I always thought I wasn't going to make it as a Victoria's Secret model, but here I am! I'm just halting until Joe's back to his normal self; and I can't leave our daughter all alone."
"I get that, I really do." He replied, "Speaking of Alani, wanna check-in on her?"
"She's been awfully quiet. Let's sneak in there and be silent."
We quietly walked towards the living room and we stumbled on the sight of Jonathan holding Alani in his arms while Bluey continued to play, and Joseph was asleep on the recliner.
Josh and I looked at each other with a smile, "At least Alani's opening up to her uncles."
"We're already gonna be her favorite uncles at this point, Uce. She definitely takes after you, but she also reminds me a little bit of Joe."
"You think so?"
"Mhm. It's just a blessing that you came into Joe's life when he needed someone the most." He cleared his throat, "There is something I wanted to tell you, but it's better if we're alone."
"Yeah, sure."
Josh and I walked off and stepped into the den. We took a seat on the couch and he looked at me with a warm smile that spread across his face, "You know, Chloe, I'm really thankful that Joe married you. I mean, you're beautiful, smart, and you love my cousin unconditionally. He's never had something so special before in his entire life."
"I appreciate that so much, Josh." I smiled, "Joe always tells me that he's the luckiest man alive."
"It's because he hasn't had the best luck with relationships. When we were teenagers, he had the worst toxic relationships we've ever seen. He dated this one girl named Sabrina and she was a bitch. She tried to forbid our 'cuz from seeing us and she was controlling. Then after they broke up, he started dating Galina back when they were in college. She was a wolf in sheep's clothing. She hated that Joe had a life outside of her and she couldn't stand it, Uce." He sighed, "It's a thousand wonders why Joe didn't leave after she started revealing her true colors. Not to mention that she would use him for money to buy Gucci handbags and whatnot."
I shook my head, "I don't know either. I'm glad that he ended up leaving her in the end. I remember when he did and she tried to gaslight him and make up all of these lies to tarnish his career in WWE. I never understood women like that."
"And that's why we love you. You're nothing like that bitch, and I'm so thankful that we know he's in good hands from now on. Matter of fact, Chloe, you made his dreams come true."
"How so?"
"Well for one, you made him feel loved for the first time in his life outside of his family. You shown him that love existed. You both have a baby together when he's always wanted to experience fatherhood; and lastly, he feels complete. Joe's never had the best of luck with relationships until you came into his life. Thank you for loving our cousin."
"Of course! He's the best thing that's ever happened to me ever since I dealt with my ex-boyfriend."
"I'm still sorry that you dealt with that abuse too. You two were made for each other. Uce."
Josh opened his arms and we shared a hug in each other's embrace for awhile. Joe had the best cousins and I couldn't be anymore thankful to have them in my life. Like I said before, they were like the brothers I've always wanted.
"I think I need to get some rest, Josh."
"I understand. I can take Alani to her bedroom and I'll crash in the guest bedroom."
"That works with me." I warmly smiled, "Goodnight, Josh."
"Goodnight, Chloe."
Josh
I watched as Chloe stood up from the couch and made her way back into the master bedroom for the night. While she went to sleep, I took it upon myself to take her daughter to bed for the night before getting some sleep myself.
I quietly stepped back into the living room as my brother continued to hold Alani in his arms while the television was still playing on the screen.
I went to grab Alani and his eyes started to slowly open, "Man Uce, what the hell are you doing?" Jonathan asked.
"I'm taking Alani to her bedroom for the night. Chloe was exhausted and it's the least we could do since she's allowing us to stay over for the night."
"I know." He yawns, "Here, Uce. I wanna go back to sleep."
Jonathan handed Alani to me, and I carried her upstairs and opened her bedroom door. I was in awe with how beautiful the decor was. My cousin was definitely amazing at interior designing; along with Chloe.
Before I laid her down, Alani started to make a small noise and was close to crying out until I sat down and cradled her in my arms.
"It's okay, Uce. This is Uncle Josh; and I want you to get some rest for me, alright?" I paused, "I love you, Little Uce."
I continued to rock her to sleep until it finally worked. I stood up and gently placed her in the crib, pulling the blanket softly over her before stepping out and heading off to sleep myself.
Joe
While I was dozing off to sleep for the night, one of the nurses opened the door and she came in with a smile on her face.
"I'm so sorry that I woke you up, Joe."
"No worries." I yawned, "Is it time for me to get off this bed and have more stretching exercises?"
She nodded, "Yes, and if you're able to walk fully from the bed to the door, and able to do everything else on your own without assistance, you'll be getting discharged first thing in the morning."
"Awesome. Let's try our best!"
She helped me leave the bed and as I stood on the floor. For the next hour and a half, I started walking without an issue and I didn't feel as much pain to my ribs unless I started coughing. It was a blessing.
"You're doing it, Joe!"
"I've waited for a long time for this moment to come. That means I'll be heading back home tomorrow after all." I flashed a smile.
"Do you want me to call up your wife?" She asked.
I took a moment to think about that and shook my head, "Better yet. I wanna surprise her and Alani."
"Are you going to Uber back to your house, Joe?"
I nod, "Yeah and she'll have no idea."
We continued to work on my exercises and to my surprise, I was able to do everything without an issue. I could walk, jog, use the bathroom, get back in the bed on my own and not needing anymore assistance.
I was ready to return home first thing in the morning to Chloe and Alani. And they'll never see it coming.
