Aspen hated waking up in the morning. Not to sound concerning. It wasn't that she wished she never woke up at all, but she always asked why she had the wake up with the sun directly in her face? Or Yeontan basically sticking his tongue in her nose?
The only good thing about mornings was coffee, but she could have coffee at any point in the day so that excuse fell flat on itself face.
Aspen woke up the next morning rather early much to her own displeasure, but it wasn't like she could simply fall back to sleep. She had an alien sleeping on the couch in her living room. She had to make sure there wasn't a hole blown into the side of her house or something crazy.
Once she managed to gain the mental capacity to leave her bed, Aspen shuffled her way downstairs and into the living room, which she was relieved to find was perfectly intact. She wasn't sure if Taehyung even went to sleep, seeing as it wasn't required for him to function properly, but she could see from across the room that he was laying down, a little tuft of black hair peeking over the edge.
She walked over to the couch and stood directly over him. He looked to be asleep, eyes delicately closed with his face falling into rest. So he was capable of sleep, but didn't need to do it, just as he was with eating.
And then his eyes snapped open and found hers.
"Holy shit!" Aspen nearly fell on top of the coffee table, startled by his sudden waking. Taehyung sat up, watching the woman place her hand over her chest. She shot a vindictive eye at him. "Who the fuck wakes up like that?" He doesn't even look tired or anything. Did he just lay there with his eyes closed for 8 hours?
What kind of psychopath has she taken into her home?
"I'm sorry, Human Aspen, I did not mean to scare you." Taehyung apologized, getting up from the couch to make sure she was okay. He's heard that humans are rather fragile creatures, a few of them can quite literally be scared to death. "I did not nearly send you into cardiac arrest, did I?" The worry and sincerity in his voice was something hard for him to fake. Concern painted his sharp features.
Aspen finally caught her breath and stood up straight. "No, Taehyung, I'm fine." She wasn't sure if she should tell him that it was a simple euphemism and he wasn't actually going to scare her into a heart attack. She figured that he'd figure it out eventually.
Aspen breezed by Taehyung, making her way into the kitchen to make the only source of energy that got her through the day. Taehyung followed behind her like a lost puppy. A large, extraterrestrial, puppy, but a puppy no less. His black, curly hair was was messy and his face had lost all worry, now only filled with innocent curiosity
Aspen turned on the coffee machine that sat between the wall and the stove. It beeped to show that it was on, but it still needed time to heat up, so Aspen took this time to make her and Taehyung two bowls of cereal, Cinnamon Toast Crunch to be precise, her favorite type of cereal.
"Here." She slid a bowl across the counter towards the man standing aimlessly in her kitchen. He looked at her for a moment, eyes trailing down to the contents of the bowl. He watched the way Aspen ate and replicated her, scooping up a spoonful of cereal and shoving it in his mouth. Taehyung hummed with delight his eyes containing little stars as he took another spoonful. He never knew human food could be so good.
Taehyung licked his lips as the mild take dripped from them, watching from the side as Aspen focused on working her Keurig.
"What's that?" He pointed to the steaming brown liquid that poured into her mug. Once again his head tilted to the side with confusion, a natural reaction to things he didn't understand. He was completely oblivious.
Aspen chuckled. "It's coffee, something humans use to give them energy. It has caffeine in it." She pulled the milk and creamer out of the fridge to add the titter liquid. Taehyung was filled with fascination. "Can I try some?" Earth food was good so far so why wouldn't this be?
Aspen wasn't sure if she should give it to him. What if he starts levitating or some shit? She was in no way prepared to deal with that. Giving him an entire cup was out of the question, so she simply slid her mug over to him. "Small sip only. I don't know how you'll react with caffeine."
Taehyung set down his bowl of cereal and picked up the mug by the handle. He glanced at her and with an encouraging nod, he took a small sip of her coffee. Instantly, his face morphed and scrunched as if he ate something sour. He looked at the cup with utter disgust and put it down on the counter, showing cereal in his mouth to combat the bitter taste on his tongue.
Aspen took the warm mug, at too a sip of her own. It tasted fine to her. "Too bitter?" That's the reason most didn't like coffee and that was the reason Taehyung gave, nodding. "It is disgusting," he managed to say between bites of his food.
"It's alright, not everyone likes coffee." She grabbed her bowl of cereal with her right hand and held her mug in her left. "Come on." She nodded her head, motioning him to follow her as she left the kitchen. Taehyung would have followed her either way.
They sit with a fairly decent amount of space between them. Taehyung tucked his legs beneath himself while he ate. "I want to watch that show with the blue cat." He took the remote and pressed the red on button, the only button he really knew how to work, but beyond that, he was lost.
Aspen reached across the couch and took the remote from him. Her fingers brush against his hands and she takes notice to unusually hot. Her brows furrowed and she placed her hand on top of his. "What?" She placed her bowl down on the coffee table and pushed his hair out of the way to press her hand to his forehead.
Taehyung looked up at her, confused. "Is this a human custom that I do not understand, Human Aspen?"
"Why are you so hot?" If any human was at this temperature, Aspen would be concerned for their well-being. He wasn't sweating or anything. Did he even have the physical capacity to sweat? That was beside the point. Aspen realized she probably could have worded that better, but thank whatever god is out there that he was innocent.
"Oh! This is unusual for you." He realized. "My planet is extremely cold, so much that you and your Earthy vegetation would die if your planet had the same climate. To combat this, my people have an elevated natural body temperature to survive. It is evolution." Taehyung explained to her. "Your Earth has a very moderate climate, rather hot, really. I need to keep the environment around me cold so I don't overheat."
That made sense and explained why her house has been getting terribly cold over the past few days. Taehyung must have turned down the temperature to maintain his health.
"I hope the cold temperature does not bother you." Once again the concern crossed his features. The cold wasn't too bad, with a few extra blankets and a heater, she'd be fine.
Aspen shrugged. "It's fine. I can just...put a heater in my room, I guess." She sighed, going to Hulu so that she could put on The Amazing World of Gumball for the man.
Taehyung smiled at the intro of the show, his dark eyes sparkling with a childlike excitement. He happily ate spoonfuls of cereal at a time while watching their most recent adventure with a smile.
Aspen put down her mug of coffee down on a coaster on the table and got up from the couch, walking around behind the couch and up the stairs to get to her room.
She took Yeontan, who was sleeping in the middle of her bed into her arms. "Good morning, Tannie." Aspen gave him a loving scratch behind his ear and made her way over to her bedside table.
As she went back downstairs, checking her phone for any notifications and such. There was nothing of importance, just reminders. But at the very end, there was a text from one of Aspen's closest friends, Seokjin, a man who prides himself on his amazing looks.
Jinnie:
Remember I'm coming over today. So, be ready, I'm not trying to see you in just a bathrobe again. What a haunting image.
Aspen froze in her tracks. She had completely forgotten that Jin was supposed to come over so that they could go out today. It completely flew over her head with everything that had been going on with Taehyung. How was she supposed to explain the random man in her house that wasn't there a week ago?
She ran down the stairs, rattling Yeontan awake. The dog leaped out of her arms and ran out of the way to avoid his owner who was making a b-line for Taehyung.
"Taehyung, I need you to go upstairs and stay in my room. My friend is coming over and he ca-" she was abruptly cut off when there was a knock at the front door in Jin's familiar little tune.
"Fuck!" She cursed, standing up straight. He had sent the text almost a whole hour ago, of course, he'd be here.
Taehyung stared up at her with startled eyes. He just wanted to watch his curious show.
Aspen walked over to the front door, signaling Taehyung to go upstairs, but the alien sat there, still confused about what she was trying to get him to do. To him, she was simply waving her hands in weird motions.
Aspen didn't even notice that Taehyung hadn't left when she unlocked the front door and opened it.
Jin stood there with his hand up in the air, ready to knock once again. He stood tall before her, looking even bigger than he actually was with his broad shoulders. His plush lips pulled into his adorably endearing squishy smile.
"Aww, if it isn't my gorgeous bestie." He grinned, hugging Aspen tightly, so tight that she could feel and heard her back crack under the pressure. "Not as gorgeous as you." She mumbled, patting his back as best she could until he let her go. Aspen began to walk back towards the living room. "Hold in, I need to check something."
The second she spotted Taehyung still in the living room, she turned and pushed Jin back right before he could see him.
"Let's go into the kitchen, I made some coffee if you want some." Aspen redirected him into the kitchen, before turning back to Taehyung. "Hide!" She mouthed to him before quickly walking into the kitchen after Jin who was pouring sugar into the mug of coffee he had poured himself.
"You okay, you seem a bit jittery?" Jin asked her, leaning against the counter. Aspen smiled tightly and nodded. "Yep, just...tired."
Jin sipped on his coffee walking towards Aspen with the sole intention of walking past her so that he could go into the living room. "Where's Yeontan?"
Aspen quickly stepped in front of him, but Jin just gave her a strange look and walked past her once more and turned into the living room, looking for the small dog.
"Wait! Jin, no!" Aspen tried to stop him, but it was too late. Jin's eyes landed on the man standing in the corner of the living room, attempting to hide with his face in the corner and his back to the world. "Who the fuck is that?" Jin jumped back, attempting to hide behind her.
Honestly, this was her fault.
"Jin calm down, that's Taehyung." Aspen sighed. Taehyung turned around, eyes just as wide and round as ever, looking at Jin with one of those awkwardly charming, boxy grins. "Hello, I'm Taehyung. I'm a-"
And before he could finish Aspen rushed over to him and slapped her hand over his mouth. "He's my roommate." She gritted out to him. "You are my roommate."
Jin looked between the two of them with a suspicious look and a perfectly plucked eyebrow raised with question. He eyes Taehyung up and down, making the strange man squirm uncomfortably and divert his attention elsewhere.
"Aspen, you don't have to lie about having a boyfriend." Jin grinned. Aspen opened her mouth in protest, but she really couldn't think of anything to say. It was better than Jin finding out he was an extraterrestrial space, alien.
Taehyung looked rather confused, looking down at Aspen ready to ask her what a boyfriend was in the context that Jin was using it. He understood those two words separated. A young, human male and a companion, but he felt that it meant something different as one word.
Before he could say anything, Aspen grabbed ahold of his warm hand and laced their fingers together with a smile on her face. "You caught us! We're we really that obvious?"
Jin nodded. "Your boyfriend looked scared out of his life." He walked up to Taehyung and held out his hand. "I'm Jin, Aspen's best friend. I'm sorry to say that she hasn't said much about you."
Taehyung looked down at Jin's hand and then to his. He slowly reached out and grabbed his hand, allowing Jin to shake for him.
"I'm Taehyung. Aspen's...boy...friend."
