Annabeth Chase | Demigod of the Month

Here we are with another fantastic demigod representing us this month! Like mentioned before countless times before the Senate- and especially me- are incredibly happy you've enjoyed these few magazines.

In this month's magazine we're featuring Athena's favorite daughter, Annabeth Chase!

Annabeth has been a very controversial character for a while; with some absolutely loving her and others ignoring her as a good character. From being reduced as Percy's girlfriend, being judged for her attitude towards Rachel Dare, and later being ridiculed for her looks in Disney Plus' adaptation, Annabeth and Leah Sava Jeffries have been the talk of Fandom for years. (Note that the Community supports no Leah Sava Jeffries haters, many of us, if not all, are in the LSJ Protection Squad.)

Many people judge Annabeth for her judgmental and snappy attitude towards Rachel Dare, but I think it gives her character more depth and is true to her. Annabeth was abandoned countless times in her life; her father abandoned her for his new family, Luke abandoned her for Kronos, her own birth was followed by being abandoned on her father's doorstep for goodness sake! It's reasonable- and not to mention it's canon- that Annabeth really fears abandonment, and being left by her best friend/crush scares her.

Not to mention she's literally a teenager! She's fifteen-sixteen years old, young people can be brutal. Thinking her best friend is being stolen by some mortal he met at one of the places she's always wanted to visit hurt. He's prophesied to die in only a few months and he's spending his time with Rachel instead of her. Not to mention she obviously flirts with him.

I indulge in no Rachel hate about flirting with Percy- Percy was single and thought of Annabeth as a best friend- shoot your shot girl; we all would- BUT from Annabeth's point of view that was her man, who she'd known for literal years and have seen him at his lowest. The dislike is reasonable, she may be part god but she's still a human child.

Annabeth is a really fun character later in the books, once Percy and her get together and the Seven are formed. She's seen as very stern, aggressive, and overall scary by many of the characters; so different yet similar from the Annabeth introduced as a mere preteen. Many people look over Annabeth's actions of love towards Percy in the books because of her stern demeanor, but I think she just has a different love language than Percy.

Annabeth shows her love in small subtle ways after getting together- wayyy different from the obvious kiss on the cheek from Battle of the Labyrinth. With the lack of emotional support and abandonment issues Annabeth struggles with, a simple act to anyone else such as trusting that Percy has her back could be seen as affectionate. She bakes a cupcake for him, takes a knife for him simply because it felt right, and was sweet with Percy when she was hateful to anyone else.

Annabeth loves Percy. Even if it's hard for her to show it.

Annabeth overall demeanor in Heroes of Olympus is really different from Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which is really interesting to dive into because it forces you to think about how from PJO's perspective, which is strictly Percy's POV, we see Annabeth from the view of someone who grew up alongside her and actually knows her as a person. Unlike the new POV's we see in HoO from relatively new demigods (minus Jason who has no memories) who just met her.

Annabeth's character is no one to judge quickly and has more depth than you think- maybe not as much obvious depth like Nico di Angelo and Percy Jackson, but depth overall.

With these insights of Annabeth in mind while reading, we hope you enjoy this October season's magazine and support it all the way through! Comment your thoughts about Annabeth anywhere!
