"If you know, then that's good," He continues, slender fingers idly looping through the strands of your hair. "You look nice today."
"Thank you," Your face flushes with his sudden compliment, and suddenly it's hard to look at him, your eyes flicking up to the ceiling, and then down to the floor, and then-
Then Nagi's grabbing your chin gently in his hand, forcing you to look at him.
"We won today." He sounds amused, the corners of his mouth lifting up slightly. "You know what that means?"
He fully leans down now, resting his forehead on yours, the ends of his soft, damp hair cold against your skin, sweaty towel tossed onto the ground. His eyes are gazing straight into yours, endless pools of deep, dark grey. He's close enough that you can count his wispy white eyelashes, see the way they curl upwards slightly.
You try (and fail, miserably) to play it cool, despite the fact that your heart's beating a mile a minute. It doesn't help that you're becoming increasingly aware of the proximity of his mouth to yours with every passing second, mere inches away.
"I know," It's barely even a whisper. "I know what that means."
He steps forward again, encircling you with his arms, one snaking around your waist and the other reaching down to clutch at one of your hands.
"It means you owe me a kiss." He pulls your hand up and taps his lip with it. "Right here, please."
And who are you to deny him?
"Oh, Nagi," You laugh, slightly nervously, but also at how ridiculously cute he is. "You've earned it, after all."
And you've waited far, far too long.
He's still holding your fingers against his lips, and he places a soft, light kiss against the back of your hand. It's so light you feel like you've imagined it, but the red in his ears tells you otherwise, and the way he's suddenly gone quiet.
You gently tug your hand out of his, and he cradles your head, ever so gently, as if you're delicate and he's afraid you're going to break.
You wrap your arms around his neck, getting on your tiptoes to reach him, and he reacts instantly, slowly leaning down, closing his eyes.
Your heart is hammering, and your hand curls into his hair whilst the other grips his shoulder, grounding you as your own eyelids also flutter shut.
You're really going to kiss Nagi Seishirou- properly this time.
He wants you to.
His lips meet yours, and it's like there are fireworks going off in your brain. You practically stop breathing as Nagi sighs through his nose, his arms tightening around you, his lips soft and flush against your own.
Is this how to do it? Is this right?
Unanswered questions ping around in your head, and the panic is almost enough to make you pull away- but you can feel Nagi's smile against your mouth, so you relax, leaning up a bit higher, angling your head a little more to the side.
He pulls you in impossibly closer, close enough that you're certain he can feel your heart beating through your chest, but you ignore it, and he does too, his hand tangling into your hair.
You bunch your fingers in the fabric of his tank top, pulling him down a little bit more. He obliges gladly, and the kiss is just starting to deepen when suddenly your lungs start to burn, and you realise you haven't breathed at all.
Nagi senses this, and both of your eyes snap open. He pulls away and you gasp for breath, placing your feet flat on the ground again.
You're still clutching Nagi's top, and you release him in embarrassment, glancing up at him as he steps back a little.
His face is completely and utterly red, his blush continuing down the column of his neck and onto his shoulders. It doesn't help that his hair's an absolute mess, his usual soft, effortlessly fluffy locks sticking straight up, from your fingers running through it. He's breathless as well; he'd hid it well, but you can tell by the telltale rise and fall of his chest, the way his mouth is open slightly.
You're certain that you look equally as dishevelled, if not worse.
Your eyes meet his, and the two of you burst out laughing immediately.
"You're an absolute mess, Nagi."
He shrugs, bending down lazily to retrieve his Blue Lock towel and sling it over his shoulder. "Hmm, I wonder who's face was smashed onto mine just a couple of seconds ago?"
You're just about to reply with a snarky retort when you hear a door close behind you, and you turn in bewilderment.
Obviously, there's nobody there: but somebody definitely was, and if they saw you and Nagi, then...
Oops?
You're allowed to kiss your boyfriend, right? Who knows when you'll next see him?
That thought dampens your mood immediately, and you turn back to Nagi pensively, folding your fingers together.
He notices, a slight frown tugging onto his small, barely visible smile, and you feel bad for ruining the mood. "What is it?"
"Nothing," You step back into his personal space to wrap your arms around him again, pulling him into a gentle hug, burying your face into his chest and taking a deep breath. He smells like citrus body wash and vanilla, mixed with sweat and fabric softener, and he just smells so distinctly like Nagi that you find yourself not wanting to move.
"I'm just savouring the time we have left." Your voice is muffled from where you've shamelessly pressed your face into his body. "You have to go back in now. They're probably waiting for you."
"Who cares about them? I've tolerated them for this long, two seconds with my girlfriend shouldn't matter."
You grin, and you're sure he feels it. "Actually, I'm expecting a ring soon, mister."
He laughs, softly, almost inaudible. "Yes, ma'am."
He kisses the top of your head, murmuring "I only scored it for you, anyway."
Your heart soars. "I'm so, so proud of you. You know that, right?"
"Yeah," He places another soft kiss onto your hair. "I know."
He pauses momentarily, before adding a "It's because you came. My good luck charm."
The phrase hits you with such a strong sense of deja vu: you're taken back to all those months ago, when Nagi had just taken up football.
You'd thought he'd been amazing then, but now...
He truly is remarkable.
Wrapped up in his strong, warm embrace, you can't help but feel, in this moment, that you really do love Nagi Seishirou.
And you've got to tell him.
"Nagi?"
"Yeah?"
"I really, really lo-"
"I don't know what you think you're doing, idiot, but you better get into that locker room right now," A cold, stony voice rings out from behind Nagi and you jolt, leaping away from him in bewilderment.
Nagi doesn't even flinch, opting to roll his eyes before slowly turning around, unimpressed.
You peek from behind him to see an incredibly lanky man with a terrible haircut and square glasses peering over disdainfully at the two of you, arms crossed and mouth pulled down into a frown.
There's a young woman standing besides him; she's got a familiar face, and you soon realise that this is the woman you'd seen at Nagi and Reo's first football match with Hakuho's newly formed team.
Which means the man must be the infamous Ego you've heard so much about.
Nagi sighs. You suspect he's used to this.
"Can you just give me one more minute?"
"Sure, if you don't mind getting left behind and having all your efforts go to waste because I am not waiting for your stupid ass to finish hugging and kissing-"
"Okay, okay." Nagi cuts him off sulkily, and flashes you a small smile. "I'll see you later."
"Yeah." You nod, smiling back, although your lungs feel as if they're being trampled on by a herd of elephants. "I'll see you later."
I really, really love you.
You'll just have to wait until next time to tell him.
Nagi and the two adults disappear off into the locker room, leaving you alone in the cold corridor of the Blue Lock facility.
Your trudge back to the stands is long and hard; you slink past security and slowly climb back up the stairs, your energy suddenly drained as the adrenaline wears off and you remember just how much of a cold day it is.
Chigiri's family are long gone by now, and so are all the inevitably disappointed U-20 fans. You retrieve your jacket, thankful that it hasn't blown away in the wind, zipping it back up with a sigh.
You shove your hands into your pockets; your fingers brush against the smooth, velvety box of Reo's necklace.
Funnily enough, it rattles slightly as your hand knocks against it, and your eyebrows furrow.
There shouldn't be anything else inside, right?
It plagues your mind the entire walk back to the train station, and you can't take it anymore- you pull out the box and open it, peering inside once you're safely onto the train.
There's nothing inside but the cushion the necklace is sat on.
You gently shake it again, open this time; there's still a slight shift as something in the box moves from side to side, and now you're really confused.
You hesitantly pinch the cushion between your fingers and pull it out- the woman sitting besides you gasps slightly in horror (after all, it is an expensive box) but you pay her no heed, coaxing the cushion out of its box.
Bingo.
Just as you'd thought, there is something hiding in the box, expertly placed beneath the cushion, concealed from prying eyes.
It's a small piece of paper, folded up into a little rectangle no bigger than your pinky finger.
You fish it out, carefully placing the cushion back into the box.
Reo's left you a note?
The silly boy should've just told you- since when was Reo the secretive type?
Either way, this must be important, so you compose yourself before opening it.
It's written in his handwriting, and you haven't seen it in so long that you stare at it for longer than you should before the words finally start to sink in.
Because you've stolen my heart.
That's all it says.
Thing finally start to make sense, falling perfectly into place like the final pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, revealing to you the big picture.
No wonder he'd been acting so strange when you'd met him at the pitch, and you're finally understanding the knowing looks Hiori wouldn't stop sending him.
Reo likes you.
You're in utter disbelief. It almost feels like some sort of cruel prank, like somebody's waiting to see your reaction so they can jump out with a camera and laugh in your face.
The Mikage Reo, number one student in terms of intelligence, looks and popularity at Hakuho High School, has fallen for you?
And to think, that all this time, he's been doing nothing but pushing you and Nagi closer together, knowing how you'd felt about him.
You're genuinely perplexed- why would he gift you this necklace after you and Nagi already started dating?
Oh, wait.
You'd only made it official once they'd gone off to Blue Lock. And by then, maybe Reo had already given Ba-ya the necklace for safekeeping...
You think back to what she'd told you earlier.
"It's from Reo. He told me to give it to you before he left for Blue Lock when I felt it was most appropriate, and I don't see any better time than now."
Obviously, Ba-ya doesn't know about you and Nagi anyway, and she also didn't know the gift would be so... romantic.
You feel incredibly guilty; you'd been shamelessly flaunting it in Reo's face, telling him how much you loved it, and yet, for him, it had been so much more than a simple gift.
For him, it had been a confession.
After you'd kissed Nagi, you'd heard someone leave. There had only been one other person with the two of you, and that had been none other than Reo.
Oh, dear.
You might just be the worst person on the planet.
You remove the necklace with shaking hands, gently laying it back down to rest in its velvet box and then into your pocket, clutching it tightly in your hand to make sure it doesn't fall out.
What kind of a situation have you gotten yourself into?
As much as you love Reo, he will truly be nothing more than your best friend.
And you wish that he'd never fallen for you in the first place.
Why did he even like you like that? You'd never done anything with him to seem even remotely attractive, had you? Whenever you spent time with him and Nagi, you really didn't hold back, showing him your ugliest sides.
Reo really is too nice of a person for his own good.
Your phone pings; it's Nagi, and you open the message immediately.
He tells you that he's going to be free for the next two weeks- you reply excitedly with a barrage of emojis to convey your joy, and he gives you a thumbs up before telling you he has to go.
And now you need to figure out how to return tho necklace to Reo within the next two weeks without either hugely offending him or breaking his heart.
Can't be too hard, right?
