Cleo Hanover has spent the last three years sleeping on the floor of the Hermes cabin. And not because the messenger god was her father— no, then she would at least get a bunk. She was there because while her father was an ENT surgeon Brooklyn, she still had no clue who her mother was.

Dr. Hanover, Cleo's father, wasn't much help with that mystery either. He didn't know that the beautiful woman he'd met while stationed overseas was actually a goddess, just like he didn't know that the strawberry fields he'd dropped his daughter off at weren't exactly a regular summer camp. And the lovelorn stories he had of her mother— which she really tried to discourage him from sharing could really  have been about any of the Olympians. Truthfully, Cleo wasn't all that sure her mortal father really remembered anything about her mom, not when his descriptions of her kept changing.

Being unclaimed wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. Sure, you had to accept that your godly parent didn't really give a crap about you, but Cleo had been living with the reality of a deadbeat mom for her entire life. This didn't exactly change anything. She'd been in the Hermes cabin so long she wasn't sure she would even want to be claimed if it meant having to leave.

But just because she was happy with the unknown didn't mean everyone was content with her status as unclaimed. Cleo was pretty sure half the Hermes cabins had bets on who her mom was. She knew Chiron had his suspicions that he didn't dare share. Hell, even the naiads in the lake swam away giggling one time after mentioning "her mom". The only person who didn't seem to have guesses about Cleo's parentage was Luke. He knew her well enough to leave the subject alone, save for the occasional joke about how miserable at parenting the Olympians were.

But the gods do things on their own time, and not when it's most convenient for the Stoll brothers' bets. Sometimes they don't give you recognition for the things you respect— or the things you want. Sometimes, that unwanted attention lands you doing their bidding. And sometimes, being claimed after 1,096 days of sleeping on the floorboards means getting sent on a quest to complete a Herculean task. Literally.

VAL'S NOTE. at this point we should really just have a birdie/val cinematic universe because our ocs are GOING to appear in each other's fics. anyways, the percy jackson show is healing me in so many ways i can't explain it. i cannot wait to write about luke's quest because we never got any background/details on it and i low key have a plan for like almost the entire series so we'll see how this goes!
