THREE

The morning rolled around tediously slow, each hour passing by without any notifications on her phone at all. Once again, she checked the device, seeing a blank screen yet again.

"How come you're allowed to check your phone and we aren't?" One of her regular students spoke from the middle of the classroom.

Her eyes met with the boys, raising her brows slightly, "Well Jacob, I can't use my phone to cheat, nor can I currently use it instead of doing my job since you're all working." She smiled at him, "plus, I do what I want when I want."

She stood from her dest, admiring the peaceful atmosphere radiating from her usual students. They all sat working with their headphones in, some snacking on various sweet and savoury items: she had a few rules in her classroom, one was if you want to chew gum, she gets a piece; another was if you want to eat, don't chew in a gross way and clean up after yourself; and if you want to listen to music, make sure no one else can hear it. She believed that if students are allowed to work in a way they feel comfortable, they work more efficiently and to a higher standard.

She was walking through the spaces between the tables, checking to see how everyone was getting on with their work when she noticed one of the girls was missing, "did anyone see Katie leave?"

She turned to the other girl who she was supposed to be sitting next to, "no, she just disappeared. Was sitting one second and then... not." She answered, turning back to her exercise book to continue with her task.

Ellie furrowed her eyebrows, walking back to her desk to send out an email about the missing student. However, before she could do so, her phone pinged loudly. A message from an unknown number. She picked it up, unlocking it to read the message.

He answered practically straight away, and couldn't help the excited smile that found her way across her features.

However, that excitement was short lived. The small scream of of one of her students tore her head up swiftly, seeing one of the girls back away from her desk. It was Maize, the girl who was sharing a desk with Katie. The air around Katie's chair seemed to be distorting, flickering like a buffering screen before the girl reappeared. She was scared, tears falling down her cheeks as she looked around the room frantically.

"Katie?" Eloise asked her slowing, her voice calm and relaxing.

The girl sniffled, "please tell me you can see me."

A bitter taste came to the woman's mouth; to have that happen in front of her whole class must have been terrifying. She knew if that had happened to her when she was still in school she would have wanted the ground to swallow her whole. "We can see you, it's alright."

"i dont know whats happening to me." her eyes widened, "please miss, i need help" she was speaking quick, barelyn breathing, "i need help, please!"

Eloise stood up, walking up to the girl and wiping the tears from her face, "it's okay, it's okay." she comforted her, "everything's okay, Katie."

she sniffled again, her breathing becoming smoother that it was before, but still shakey, "my mom's gonna kill me."

the womans heart sank ven further; she knew a lot about her students, and she knew Katies mom was a very strict woman, "it's all gona be okay. come on." she helped her stand up before turning to the rest of the class, "im taking Katie somewhere, none of you breath a word of this. understood? there will be serious unishment if you do."

she went to grab her phone and lead Katie out of the room with her arm around her shoulder, mumbling comfort to her as she walked her to the office.

when they got there, the roomwas empty, so she told Katie to sit down and walked up to the ofice phone, going through the book to find Katies mothers number. "hello, is this Mrs Gillien? okay, im Miss Bennet, im Kathrines English teacher, shes been feeling rather sick all morning, but she wanted to stay in bless her, and shes been sick in the lesson."

there was a pause while the woman replied, "yes, im sure shes not faking i watched her be sick. her lips are very pale and her cheeks are red, she a little embarrassed since it was infront of the class but shes in the office wit me now."

Katie gave her a look, she knew she looked upset but definatly not ill.

Eloise hummed, "yes ive given her a sick bag- oh you poor thing!" another look was shot her way again from the girl, "yes she has been sick again, in the bag." there was another pause, "yes i'll mark her down as having gone home. okay i'll see you soo Mrs Gillien, thank you." sh hung up the phone.

"am i going home?"

"yes, one second," she reached into her pocket, pulling out a array of small, travel sized makeup, "this will make you look ill, dont lick your lips or anything, it'll come off" she applied some concealer to her finger, dabbing on her lips from the edge going in.

once she had finished, Katie spoke up, "why are yo helping me? i'm a monster."

"youre not a monster, Katie. never think that." she told her firmly before answerimg her question, "us mutants need to stick together. now, come on. remember, sick in the bin, sick in the bag." she grabbed one of teh sick bags and opened it, giving it Katie to hold.

they walked out to the pick up point together, meeting her mom there, "Mrs Gillien, hi! ive givven her another bag just in case shes sick again. now," she helped Katie into the car as if she was actually ill, "we do have a nasty stomach bug going around at the minte so as a precaution, we are asking that you keep Kathrine off for the next two weeks because its long lasting and she will still have it even if she isn't sick again. plain foods are best and plenty of fluids."

the woman shut her daughters door, "thank you,Miss Bennet. i am concerned she'll be missing a lot of work."

neither of them realised the window was open slightly and Katie was listening to what they were saying, "yes, i thought you would be. im not meant to tell students, but it might be my last week here, but im more than happy to give you my personal email so i can send help for her english work and i wanted to metion something to you."

her mother shuffled slightly, "is she failing?"

"oh, no nothing like that! i could get in trouble for this, but Kathrine is excelling in all of her studies, and i believe this school may be holding her back. theres an excellent school, private, extreamly exclusive. they dont even interview students at the school, they do it in the home to see what they are like. i also hapen to be the God-daughter of the headmaster, hes a proffessor, brilliant man, i could get her an interview, if youre both interested?"

no need to mention it was a school for mutants.

the womans eyes were wide, "that sounds incredable! is that where you're moving to work?"

"hopefully," she chuckled slightly, "but they are even more selective of their staff as hey are their students. they are taught by the best."

"oh, thank you so much! please, put her down for an interview."

"i will do. you guys best get going, she needs some rest. best keep yur distance at home, you don't want to catch it."

while she was walking to the drivers side, Eloise shot Katie a sly wink. that was when she noticed the window was open. she sent a reassuring nod, hoping he would know he place is for good, not for bad.
