▒The beginning
.

.
.

The bright sun beat down on Kim Taehyung, draining him of energy as he trudged along the dusty road. Each step felt heavy, a reminder of the weight he carried knowing what was waiting for him at home.

When he finally walked into his small, cramped house in the rundown neighborhood, the silence hit him like a wave. It felt thick and heavy, almost suffocating.

His mother, exhausted from her endless chores, greeted him with a warm smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

He set his bag down on the chair and walked over to her. "How was your day, Tae?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.

Taehyung forced a smile, hiding the pain that gnawed at his heart. "Good, mom," he lied, his voice trembling under the weight of the unspoken truth.

Just then, his sister, Kim Hyejin, burst out of the bedroom, excitement shining through her damp hair. "Tae, you're back!" she squealed, but quickly tried to hide her left hand, a hint of mischief in her eyes.

Taehyung's curiosity was piqued, and he gently lifted her sleeve, revealing a fresh bruise. His heart shattered into a million pieces.

"Who did this?" he demanded, his voice trembling with rage.

Hyejin's eyes darted toward their mother, who shook her head in silent warning.

Earlier that afternoon, their father had come home in a foul mood, and for some reason, he had unleashed his anger on Hyejin, leaving her to bear the painful consequences.

Their father's arrival loomed like a dark specter, casting a shadow of terror over the fragile family.

As night descended, the family sat rigidly, awaiting the sound of the doorknob twisting-an ominous signal of their father's return.

The door swung open, and he stomped in, the stench of liquor swirling around him. "You're a misfortune!" he bellowed, his hand striking Hyejin with a force that echoed through the room.

Taehyung's rage simmered just beneath the surface, but his mother's grip held him back.

"Don't," she whispered urgently. "It'll only make things worse."

As the night wore on, the sound of their sobbing filled the cramped hall, a haunting melody of despair.

"Why, mom? Why am I a misfortune?" Hyejin cried, her small body trembling with sorrow.

Taehyung's resolve hardened, a fierce determination igniting within him. "Mom, I won't let him-"

"Shh, Tae," she interrupted softly. "We can't defy him. He'll only hurt us more."

As the night dragged on, their mom and dad went into the only bedroom they had in their cramped home. The atmosphere grew heavy with tension as their father's cruelty took over.

The sickening thuds of a belt striking flesh echoed through the walls, a harsh reminder of the violence that lived within.

Taehyung held Hyejin tightly, doing his best to shield her from the horrors unfolding just a few feet away.

He could feel her small body trembling against him, and he wished he could erase the fear from her eyes.

Their mother's screams cut through the night, each cry stabbing at Taehyung's heart, filling him with a deep sense of helplessness and rage.

It was a nightmare that felt all too real, and he struggled with the urge to intervene, knowing that any attempt to stop it might only make things worse.

The family's sleeping arrangements painted a vivid picture of their poverty.

Taehyung and Hyejin lay on the hard floor of the cramped hall, their thin mattresses barely providing any comfort, side by side.

Their parents occupied the only bedroom, with the bathroom being the lone facility in the house.

Taehyung wrapped his arms around Hyejin, who was still crying softly. "Don't cry, Hyejin-ah. I will make things better. Please don't cry," he whispered, trying to reassure her.

Hyejin stuttered through her tears, "I'm scared, Tae. And I feel so bad for Mom. She's going through so much pain."

Gently caressing her hair, Taehyung replied, "We will get through this nightmare. Just sleep now. It's too late."

Hyejin closed her eyes, clutching his shirt tightly, seeking comfort in his presence.

He continued to stroke her back, murmuring, "I'm here. Sleep tight." With a tender kiss on her forehead, he watched as her breathing steadied, finally falling asleep.

Soon, the weariness overcame him too, and he surrendered to sleep, hoping for a better tomorrow.

Next morning, Taehyung and Hyejin quickly showered in the cramped bathroom before their father woke up.

The small space felt even tighter as they tried to get ready for the day, the sound of water echoing off the walls.

They attended Hanseo College, a small, free institution that combined college and high school programs. It was their only hope for a better future, a chance to rise above the struggles they faced at home.

Taehyung, a hardworking college student, was dedicated to his studies, while Hyejin, a bright high school student, found joy in learning.

As Taehyung and Hyejin walked to their classes, the usual college buzz surrounded them. Students were chatting, rushing to lectures, and the atmosphere felt both familiar and a bit overwhelming.

Taehyung tried to focus on his studies, but the weight of his worries kept creeping back in. Hyejin, full of energy, seemed to enjoy every moment, her laughter ringing out in the hallways.

Finally, after what felt like an endless day, Taehyung returned home. He noticed his mom waiting at the door, looking a bit anxious, with Hyejin standing right behind her, a bright smile on her face.

Since her classes had ended early, she had been eagerly waiting for him to come back.

As he stepped inside, Taehyung couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

He braced himself for bad news, but to his surprise, his mom and Hyejin pulled him into a tight hug.

"You got a scholarship to that college you applied to!" his mom exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. Taehyung's heart raced as he processed her words.

He had worked so hard for this, studying late into the night and preparing for the test, but he never really believed he would actually get it.

His mom continued, "This is a huge opportunity for you! You can really make something of yourself." In that moment, all the stress and negativity he had been feeling began to fade away.

Hope surged within him, and he realized that this scholarship could change everything-not just for him, but for Hyejin and their mom as well. With their support, Taehyung felt ready to embrace this new chapter in his life.

Overjoyed, Taehyung returned to his old college to get transfer certificates, clutching his scholarship certificate tightly.

It felt like a dream come true after all the late nights and hard work.

As he walked home, a lightness filled his heart, but little did he know, someone was lurking in the shadows, watching him closely.

The figure had eyes that glowed like blood, surrounded by an unsettling aura that seemed to absorb the light around them.

They tilted their head, glancing at the person beside them. "He looks happy," the watcher said, a sinister undertone in their voice.

"Yeah," the other replied, their expression flat. "I've never seen him this happy before."

The first person smirked, their lips curling in a way that sent a chill down the spine. "We'll see how long that lasts."

As night descended, Taehyung stepped into his home, the joy of his achievement quickly replaced by a heavy dread.

The familiar sounds of his father's angry outbursts filled the air, and Taehyung's heart sank. He could hear his sister's muffled cries and his mother's desperate attempts to calm their father.

The happiness he had felt just hours ago faded into the darkness of his reality, leaving him feeling trapped between two worlds-one of hope and one of despair.

During dinner, Taehyung was excited to share his scholarship news with his dad, hoping for a proud reaction.

He started talking, but his father barely listened, just nodding and then headed off to the bedroom.

Before closing the door, his father looked back and said, "Go, if it costs nothing to me." Taehyung felt a sharp pain in his chest and replied, "It won't cost anything." But his dad just walked away, leaving Taehyung feeling crushed.

His mom and sister, noticing his sadness, tried to lift his spirits with their warmth and encouragement, but the sting of his father's indifference was hard to shake off.

As bedtime approached, Taehyung and Hyejin made their beds in the hall, a cozy routine that usually felt comforting.

Their mom went to the bedroom, and soon enough, a familiar scream pierced the stillness of the night.

Hyejin had already fallen asleep, completely unaware of the chaos around them.

Taehyung lay there, tears silently streaming down his cheeks as he fought to keep his emotions hidden from Hyejin.

The weight of his father's harsh words and the turmoil in their home felt overwhelming, making him feel utterly alone in that moment.

Next morning, Taehyung woke up early, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves about his first day at college. He opened his closet and stared at the few clothes he had.

He picked out a pair of old jeans and a simple shirt that was slightly faded. His shoes were scuffed and had a hole, but he didn't care much about that.

What was important to him was the chance to study and make a better life for himself.

After quickly ironing his shirt, he combed his hair, trying to look presentable.

Even though he didn't have the latest styles, there was something about him that made him stand out. His strong features and warm smile gave him a handsome look, and he carried himself with a quiet confidence.

His mom kissed him goodbye, her eyes filled with pride and a hint of worry, while Hyejin had already left for school.

Taehyung stepped outside and started his 2-kilometer walk to college. The pavement was rough underfoot, and he could feel the weight of his situation, but he pushed through.

He couldn't afford the bus, but he was determined to make the most of this opportunity, ready to face whatever challenges came his way.

Upon arrival, Taehyung looked up at the massive college building, feeling a mix of awe and anxiety.

It was nothing like the high school he had attended; everything seemed so polished and perfect. As he stepped inside, he could feel the weight of the stares on him.

A few students exchanged glances and whispered, "Eww, he's gross; he's poor." Taehyung's heart sank, and for a moment, he felt small and out of place.

But he shook off the hurt. He reminded himself that he belonged here just as much as anyone else. With a determined stride, he made his way to his first class, pushing aside the whispers and focusing on the excitement of learning.

He was there to create a better future for himself, and he wouldn't let anyone's judgment hold him back.

Somewhere else, a figure with sharp teeth and blood-red eyes leaned closer, a sinister smile creeping across his face. "We finally found him," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "We need to search for that other person as well. Then we will reclaim what we lost last time."

The others in the shadows exchanged knowing smirks, their eyes glinting with anticipation.

Meanwhile, in the college hallway, Taehyung was trying to find his way when a muscular guy rushed past him, nearly knocking him over.

The guy stopped and turned, looking genuinely apologetic. "Sorry about that!" he said, catching his breath. Taehyung quickly replied, "It's fine. Can you tell me where the principal's office is? I'm new here."

The guy grinned, his energy infectious. "Hey, welcome! I'm Jeon Jungkook. Just go straight and turn left. Sorry, I'm in a bit of a rush. See you around!" And with that, Jungkook dashed off into the throng of students, leaving Taehyung feeling a mix of gratitude and excitement.

He took a deep breath, adjusted his backpack, and headed in the direction Jungkook had pointed, ready to tackle the challenges of this new environment.
