Ch 3: 'Blame It On My Youth'
[And onto Chapter 3 we go. Finally, we're at U.A. I always like to think this is where the story really gets good for a lot of MHA books, and I hope it can continue here with this one. Overall, people seem to enjoy the first two chapters, which is great. I also want to clarify that just because the reader is a colder individual, doesn't mean he won't have funny moments or humour involved in. People can have really crap lives and still be able to have fun here and there. Just thought I should clarify that. Anyway, on with the chapter...]
__________________________________________________________________________________
[Your POV]
The day had finally arrived. It was one I started to think would never come by. When I was younger, this was all I could think about. But this was the furthest thing from my mind after everything that happened. But now, as I stand before that golden crest of U.A. Academy, I can't help but get a surreal feeling from it all. Just remembering all the times Izuku would talk about going to this very school was a thing I'd often fall asleep to. Not out of boredom, but mainly I couldn't keep up with the energy of my little brother.
(Y/n): [Sighs] "I wish you could be here for this."
"What are you talking about? I am here?!"
(Y/n): "Huh?"
My mind was the first thing to spark to life upon hearing those words suddenly fill the air. And as it did, the rest of my consciousness was brought back to the world around me as dozens upon dozens upon dozens of fellow people around my age walked through the gates of this heroic school. Honestly, it wasn't very surprising seeing that U.A. was the most popular school for future heroes.
So seeing so many people wasn't hard to believe. What also wasn't a surprise was the cause for the earlier words. Out of nowhere a long, muscular arm launched around my neck before pulling me close to their body. A quick glance to the left and my eyes landed on the ever-energetic grin that spawn across Bakugo's face.
Bakugo: "Come on, (Y/n)! Don't tell me you're getting emotional on me now?"
(Y/n): "Do I look emotional?"
Of course, I didn't look at the part. I had spent a lot of time stuck in a rabbit hole in my earlier years and I don't really let my emotions come out too much. But when they do, whoever they're directed toward, should probably look out. As for Bakugo, he just narrowed his eyes toward me before bursting out with that familiar cackle he always gave off.
Bakugo: "Oh, who am I kidding, man? You're as emotional as my Mom gets whenever she sees Dad crying."
(Y/n): "Oh, that's right. You're Mom's more of the man in the relationship, huh? I forgot..."
With a hidden grin finding its way to my lips I finally decide to take my first steps through U.A.'s front gates, whilst Bakugo is left to take in my words momentarily. A few seconds passed by as I placed on a pair of headphones and shoved my hands into my pockets, just hoping this can be over and done with already. Though, despite the music playing, I was still able to hear the sudden cry from Bakugo when he finally figured out what I was referring to. Again, I could only chuckle.
Before long, Bakugo was back at my side yelling out about my claims, but I didn't really pay much attention to it. After all, we've had this little conversation before about how his Mother seemed far more manly than his father. Besides, it was common knowledge back in Junior High that Bakugo got his unrelenting rage from his Mother. Who was, let's just say, not overly pleasant when parent-teacher interviews were going on? But it was as Bakugo's voice faded into the background that my own thoughts trailed elsewhere.
More precisely, to earlier this very day, when I stood on that very beach with AllMight, after Ten Months of training had finally reached its end.
[3rd Person POV]
--7 A.M.--
All Might: "See?! There was no need to complain earlier. You did great!"
(Y/n): [Panting] "...Fuck...This..."
All Might: "Uh, Uh, Uh! Language! It isn't proper for a hero to swear, especially in public." [Mutters] "Then again, you do seem to swear a lot?"
(Y/n): "Well, yeah!" [Panting] "What do you expect after you get someone to clean a whole beach...IN ONE WEEK!"
The outrage burst only lasted for a few seconds before the need for more oxygen had made its plea. Without any hesitation (Y/n) went back to placing his hands on his knees and taking in as much air as his lungs would let him. Meanwhile, All Might continued to smile as he rubbed the back of his head after hearing (Y/n)'s remark. Currently, the pair could be seen standing on a beach, the youngest of the pair covered in sweat and drooling with frustration.
All Might: "Nonetheless, young (Y/n), you must now be twice as vigilant of what you say if you wish to be my successor to One For All! You must embody the meaning of being a symbol of peace to all! Ha! Ha!"
The Number One Pro Hero stated with a clenched fist as he shot it into the air. Again, I could only offer him a frustrated look.
(Y/n): "I understand..." [Panting] "...You're a goody-toe shoes hero. But me..." [Panting] "I'm a teenager. We hate cleaning our rooms..." [Panting] "Let alone an entire beach!"
All Might: "Yes, but look at all you've accomplished in such a time. This entire beach was once covered with trash and rubbish. But now, in a little over a week, you have managed to clean it all. And it's all because of the my extreme work regime plan I had you start Ten Months ago!"
(Y/n): "Oh, that's right. My torture started that long ago. Boy...Does time fly by."
The tired expression that dawned on (Y/n)'s face as he buried his head toward the ground was only there for a few seconds as he took in his thoughts. (Y/n) was being serious, however, when he mentioned how fast time went by. It seemed like just yesterday that he had begun training with All Might after being offered One For All. At first, (Y/n) didn't exactly know what to expect from the Number One Pro Herowhen it came to training. But as the days quickly built up, he knew it wasn't going to be easy.
Like this week alone, All Might had tasked (Y/n) to completely clean up the entirety of Dagoba Municipal Beach Park. A beach that spanned 10 Kilometers...In both directions! When (Y/n) first heard such a task come from All Might's lips he thought it was a joke. After all, he had never asked the young boy to do something so impossible before. But All Might wasn't joking. So, for every day this week, (Y/n) got up at 5 A.M. and proceeded to jog to the beach where he'd meet up with AllMight and go about cleaning the beach one piece at a time.
But today (Y/n) was forced to get up extra earlier to finish off the beach, after all, today was the day he'd finally go to U.A. But unlike all those other students he was sure were heading there, (Y/n) was only going so he could become an officially licensed hero so he'd be able to bring proper peace to the entire world. Something no normal kid with a Quirk could do. He was doing this all for his brother. So no one ever had to feel that pain again.
(Y/n) was abruptly pulled from his thoughts however when he felt a large hand land on his shoulder. Looking up he was greeted by the massive smile All Might always had on offer, but despite this being something (Y/n) saw often. There was something different about it this time. A more genuine feeling. Like... This time All Might wasn't just smiling for the show of it. But because he was actually proud of (Y/n). His next words only proved that.
All Might: "But at the end of the day, all of which you have gained has been from your hard work and dedication."
He was complimenting (Y/n). Now, it's not like All Might never encourage the boy. He most certainly did. But this time around there was something different that stuck out more.
All Might: "Now, I do not wish to give you a big head saying this. But seeing your determination to wake up every morning bright and earlier to even be here before I arrived is something all heroes should aspire to have, (Y/n). It is with that and much more that I can finally say your body is ready to become a vessel for One For All!"
It was finally time. For (Y/n) to take on this Quirk that the current Number One Hero has been using all this time. But, just as the process seemed to be growing closer with each and every second (Y/n) couldn't help but feel a little guilty inside. He knew deep down what he intended to use this gift for. Now, what he planned to do wasn't exactly villainous. But even (Y/n) knew that it wasn't exactly heroic either.
The funny thing is, however, when all this training first started, (Y/n) didn't care about that. He never asked for All Might to choose him. He chose (Y/n). And so, if (Y/n) was given this Quirk, he could do what he wanted. And, besides, he wasn't doing evil. He was doing good. Definitely, more than a lot of other heroes did. Unlike them, (Y/n) wanted to put a prominent end to all villains this world had to offer. What was so bad about bringing suffering to the people who feed off that very substance?
(Y/n) clearly didn't see anything wrong. He was only doing this to make up for his brother, and to make sure no one else got hurt. It was as that thought of his little brother's crying face appeared within his mind that any guilt (Y/n) had felt from accepting One For All from All Might was suddenly taken away. He remembered why he went through all this training in the first place. It was with that reclaimed conviction that (Y/n) held nothing back as All Might proceeded to remove a single hair from his head. Wait, A hair--
All Might: "Now, it is time for the award ceremony, (Y/n) Midoirya!"
(Y/n): "Um...Okay? But why the hair?"
All Might: "All in good time, young man! But before that, I want to tell you something. Something I was once told: 'Something that you receive because you are lucky and something that you are given because you are recognized are different in essence. Take that to heart. This is a power you have earned because of your own effort."
(Y/n) didn't know how much time passed by as the rising sun filled the background. But it was in this scenic moment that (Y/n) decided, that despite his intentions for this power, he would not waste the blessing he has been given. For with this power, he would be able to rise high in the ranks of his Academia studies and become a Pro Hero in no time. Then, and only then, will he be able to keep his promise to his brother. Only then... Will he become a true hero.
All Might: "Now eat this hair!"
(Y/n): "Wait. What?"
--Present--
(Y/n): "Ew!" [Shakes head rapidly] "Yuck!"
Bakugo: "You alright, dude? Haha! Looking a little pale there." [Leans over and snickers] "You see your Mom naked again?"
(Y/n): "Wha--Dude!"
Bakugo: "What? I'm just saying, you look exactly the same when you told me you walked in on her when you were younger."
(Y/n): "Dude! That's messed up! I just...ate something disgusting for breakfast this morning."
Bakugo: "Whatever, man! If it helps ya sleep at night." The scruffy blonde quickly went back to shoving his hands into his jacket pocket. But (Y/n) wasn't one to go without a comeback.
(Y/n): "Anyway, what about you? You're looking pretty pale yourself." [Smirks] "Did you walk in on your parents doing it again?"
Bakugo: "WHAT?!"
That one word was enough to immediately draw the attention of every person passing by at that moment. But neither (Y/n) or Bakugo seemed to care, as the former was busy chuckling to himself as the latter glared in rage. Though it was one of those friendly types of rage you had with your friend, like when they recall the time you walked in on your parents doing it. Something Bakugo was really starting to regret telling (Y/n).
Bakugo: [Glares] "Dude...I told you that in confidence."
(Y/n): "And...I confidently brought it back up. See? How I'm not afraid at a-Argh!"The smirk was suddenly broken from (Y/n)'s lips however when out of nowhere
he was shoved forward, causing him to almost hit Bakugo. Once he had regained balance both (Y/n) and Bakugo turned around to see the cause of the sudden shove. By no surprise, a glaring Kaito could be seen as the cause.
Kaito: "You should be scared, Deku. We're not in junior high anymore."
That was all the bully gave before continuing on his disgruntled way. Not bothering to offer (Y/n) a second look. As for (Y/n), he just offered the back of Kaito's head a fierce glare of his own. He was joined in the action by Bakugo.
(Y/n): "What a total jackass." [Sighs] "And here I was thinking this school would be different from the others."
Bakugo: [Cackles] "Don't worry about Kaito, (Y/n). He's just still jealous that you saved his butt from that sludge villain last year." [Laughs] "Man, the way everyone just dropped off him to come hang out with you after that was hilarious."
(Y/n): "Yeah, well, I've never been one for attention, dude."
Bakugo: "That may be so. But come on, even you have to admit...It was nice having the pretty girls smile at you~"
But (Y/n) did not respond. Instead, he just blankly stared at his friend. But to Bakugo's dismay.
Bakugo: "Seriously, (Y/n). You've gotta start living a little! You want a girlfriend, right?"
(Y/n): "No. You want me to get a girlfriend."
Bakugo: "Yeah! But so you can get out there. Honestly, dude, I love you. But you don't know how much of a vibe kill it can be when you go to pick up chicks and you're number one wingman isn't even trying!"
Now, did (Y/n) necessarily mind being called Bakugo's "Wingman"? No. But was he started to get a little tired of his friend's constant clamouring for him to get a woman in his life? A little, yeah. It had been this way since the pair were old enough to truly understand about girls in a manner other than whether they farted or not. And since then, Bakugo has been 'helping' (Y/n) in any way possible to get him to have a girlfriend, despite that not being a number one priority with (Y/n).
However, as (Y/n) was starting to understand, there seemed to be a growing tendency for things to happen in his life that he mostly didn't really cast a second thought toward. Like a growing array of friends, which would all begin within a few seconds when out of nowhere something bumped into (Y/n) from behind. It took a few seconds for the young boy to realize such. But the time he did, the sound of a disgruntled female voice sounded softly from the ground behind him.
"Ow! My head. It hurts."
Sitting on the ground could be seen a young girl with brown hair. One of her eyes was sealed shut as her hand rubbed the part of her head that had collided with the sudden object blocking her path. This was Ochaco Uraraka, whose line of thought was suddenly cut off when a gentle voice called out.
"Are you alright?"
The voice was male. That much Uraraka could tell almost instantly upon hearing the words enter her ears. Soon enough her gaze was directed to a sudden hand that appeared before her eyes. It was only common sense that she'd soon follow that appendage further up the mast of soft skin and muscular arms. It was at that moment that her eyes landed on a firm and determined face.
Yet, even with these features, she was still able to find a small smile on his lips. One that perfectly matched with the rest of his appearance. A sudden blush was quick to find Uraraka's face. For a brief moment, all Uraraka could do was look at the boy in front of her, eventually causing (Y/n) to speak up once more.
(Y/n): "Um... Are you alright?"
Uraraka: "Huh? Oh! Um, yes! I-I'm fine..."
A quick glance was just offered between (Y/n) and Bakugo after Uraraka just continued to look at (Y/n), seemingly ignoring his arm. Soon enough, (Y/n) returned his gaze to the girl in front of him. His smile a little more forced this time around.
(Y/n): "...Do you need a hand getting up?"
Uraraka: "A hand? Oh! A hand! Haha...You're offering me your hand..."
Yet again, she just chuckle nervously and looked at (Y/n). That was, until she finally took notice that there was still a hand on display for her.
Uraraka: "To get up! R-Right..."
This time around the young girl took the hand on offer and was helped to her feet. By the time she was safely planted back on the ground, Uraraka was left to drop her gaze to the side as a blush took her face. Nerves coursed through her body after the awkward introduction. Eventually, she garnered the courage to turn back to the two boys in front of her, but most prominently to the boy who had helped her.
Uraraka: "Uh...Thank you, for your help. A-And sorry for bumping into you. I, um..." [Mutters] "I wasn't exactly looking where I was going."
(Y/n): "That's fine. Mistakes happen. Are you sure you'll be okay? I kinda sounded like you hit the ground pretty hard."
Uraraka: [Nervously chuckles] "Yeah. I'll be fine. Hehe...I'm just a little nervous for today is all. Oh! Are you two also looking to enter U.A.?"
(Y/n): "Uh--"
Bakugo: "You know it!"
And just like that, Bakugo entered the conversation. Once again tossing an arm around (Y/n)'s shoulder and putting on a playful grin as he looked down at the girl before him.
Bakugo: "The names Bakugo! And this is my best bud, (Y/n)..." [Grins] "...And he's single~"
Uraraka: "Um...Okay?"
(Y/n): "Dude!"
Bakugo: "What? I'm just putting it out there." [Glances at Uraraka] "It's up to her with what she does with the information~"
Again, another grin was directed toward Uraraka, even as Bakugo held onto his injured chest. Just making (Y/n) glare at him even harder. As for Uraraka, she could only stare in complete shock as a blush crept across her face. By the time (Y/n) remembered the third individual, he quickly relented from his harsh demeanour and turned back to the random person he had just met BAKUGO...and offered her the best polite smile he could at the moment.
(Y/n): "I'm sorry about him. Bakugo doesn't have much of a brain sometimes. You'd be best to just ignore a lot of what he says. I know I do."
Bakugo: "Hey!"
(Y/n): "Anyway. It was nice to meet you. Uh... Good luck with today, I guess?"
And that was all (Y/n) said. Not exactly rude. But not in the most authentic tone either. Nonetheless, (Y/n) seemed to care very little as he immediately wasted no time in turning back around and continuing on his way. As for Uraraka and Bakugo, they were just left to watch as (Y/n) moved on in silence. Though an unknown thought lingered with the female, even as she turned to the blonde who was still clutching his chest.
Uraraka: "Will you be okay?"
Bakugo: "Huh? Oh, y-yeah...I'll be fine."
Uraraka: "What about your friend? He seemed pretty annoyed."
Bakugo: "Oh, you can just blame that on (Y/n)'s youth." [Waves the air] "Honestly, once you get to know him. He's like a cat! He's soft, gentle, and sleeps all day! So don't give up, alright!"
And so, with a final wave of Uraraka, Bakugo took off after his best bud who was quickly gaining a decent gap between the others. As for Uraraka, she just remained in place momentarily before she finally asked the question that plagued her mind the most.
Uraraka: "...Don't give up on what?"
She never did get her answer to that question, however. Instead leaving her to ponder that for the rest of her trip through the halls of U.A. Academy. It was from this point that all arriving students made their way to the exam orientation room where they'd receive their next set of information to help them throughout the day. Amongst the darkened room, (Y/n) could be seen sitting quietly. Along with him, Uraraka and Kaito could also be seen as noticeable faces. Though the latter could still be seen carrying a glare.
Resting his head on his crossed arms placed on the table before him, a silent yawn escaped (Y/n)'s lips as his eyes tiredly blinked. His attention is abruptly drawn by the only source of light in the room currently. Which just so happened to be coming from right next to him. Shifting his gaze, (Y/n) could see the bright light pushing against Bakugo's face as he slammed away at a handheld console he had brought with him. It took a few seconds for (Y/n) to lean his head over ever so slightly to see what Bakugo was doing.
(Y/n): "Dude...What are you doing?"
Bakugo: "Playing Minecraft...Fighting Ender Dragon...Can't talk...Busy..."
(Y/n): "Wait! You're playing Minecraft? Now? Why?"
Bakugo: "...Can't talk...Busy..."
The pair whispered back and forth, not once did Bakugo remove his gaze from the screen that currently displayed him using cobblestones to climb up an obsidian tower. (Y/n) only watched for a few seconds longer before releasing a sigh and shaking his head. The young boy instead cast his gaze on the rest of the room. Well, the best he could. It was so dark he could hardly make out any faces.
But, one such face he did see a few rows down to the left, was the girl from earlier. Man, (Y/n) was still annoyed with Bakugo and his desperate attempt to get him a girlfriend. But before (Y/n) could think back on the past any further, he was suddenly interrupted as a bunch of lights turned on at the front of the auditorium. A few seconds later a charismatic male voice suddenly echoes through the air.
"For all of you examinee listeners tuning in, welcome to my show today! Everybody say 'Hey'!"
Nothing but silence is all that's returned as the man with long blonde hair and orange-tinted glasses lifted his hands into the air.
"...What a refined response that was. Then in that case I will quickly give you all the rundown to the practical exam, something in which will be used to showcase just why you lucky people deserve a spot in this school. Are you ready?"
Again, only silence came for a response. Though in the crowd, (Y/n)'s eyes narrowed together as his chin rested atop his arms. A confused tone escaping his lips seconds later.
(Y/n): "Present Mic? He's the one conducting the orientation? Then again, even with his radio show, he's still a teacher here."
Bakugo: "Ha!"
(Y/n): "What?"
Turning to Bakugo, (Y/n) finds his friend's gaze taken away from the screen momentarily to offer a grin at (Y/n) as he nudged his shoulders.
Bakugo: "Nothing. I just forget sometimes that you're a big hero nerd!"
(Y/n): "I mean. I was when I was little. Not so much these days."
Bakugo: "You and Midoriya were a lot alike, huh?"
(Y/n): "Yeah..." [Sighs] "Man, it would have been nice for him to be here to see all this."
It really would have been. (Y/n) knew this. And so did Bakugo. And such a look to
confirm such was quick to find the brash male's face. As for (Y/n), his gaze continue to face the ground when out of the corner of his eye he spotted a fist on display. Turning, he saw it was from Bakugo, who offered his friend a more sincere grin this time around.
Bakugo: "Well then, let's both live his dream for him while we're here, huh?"It was moments like this that made (Y/n) forget about the annoying sides of Bakugo for a moment, and realized that despite it all, (Y/n) was glad to have him as a friend. Such confirmation was soon made as (Y/n) brought on a smirk of his own and returned the gesture. No furthers were able to come from either before all noise was shattered as Present Mic spoke out once more.
Present Mic: "As it says in the application requirements, you listeners will be conducting ten-minute mock urban battles after this very special talk session. You may bring with you whatever you want. Once we are done here, you will head to your specified battle center, okay?"
As soon as such information was given both (Y/n) and Bakugo quickly dropped their eyes down to the pieces of paper given to them upon first entering the room. A quick scan over the vast words revealed they would both be taking part in different mock examines.
Bakugo: "Wait! We're not going to be in the same one? Damn!"
(Y/n): "I guess they don't want friends to be working with each other."
Bakugo: "What? But that's the best part of school work!"
(Y/n): "Unfortunately, I don't think they share your thoughts on that, Bakugo."
Present Mic: "There will be three different kinds of faux villains stationed in each battle center. You shall gain points for each one you kill, based on their difficulty
level."(Y/n): "Different level. Different points? Sounds like a video game."
Bakugo: "You thinking what I'm thinking?"
Before (Y/n) could even finish speaking, he turned back to Bakugo to see a grin running across his lips. It was clear the blonde was trying to put down a challenge. One (Y/n) unconsciously agreed to if his own grin was anything to go by.
Present Mic: "Your goal, dear listeners, is to use your Quirks to earn points by mobilizing the faux villains. Of course, attacking other examinees and using your quirk for unheroic actions are all prohibited!"
"Sir, may I ask a question!"
Present Mic: "Go for it! Okay!"
A light suddenly falls upon the young boy who now stood above the others. (Y/n)'s gaze quickly shifted along with everyone else's. There they all saw a boy with bluish/black hair and glasses pointing to a slip of paper with the blurred out images of the faux villains on them.
"On the printout given to us before entering, there are noticeably four faux villains on display. If this is a misprint then U.A., the most prominent school in japan, should be ashamed."
Bakugo: "NERRRD!!!"
Out of nowhere, the word came blasting from Bakugo, causing the boy talking to immediately turn around.
"Who said that?! I demand you reveal yourself!"
When no response came, the boy with glasses was left to just narrow his gaze and fix up his lenses before turning back to the stage.
"...*Coughs*... We, examinees, are here in this place because we wish to be moulded into exemplary heroes..."
And so, this guy went on and on about certain things. Things (Y/n) wasn't listening to. Thankfully, it wasn't long before things ended. Now, (Y/n) found himself standing in front of a large metal gate. The only thing blocking him off from entering the mock exam and seeing what this new Quirk had in store for him. Along with (Y/n) were about thirty other students. Noticeable faces like the boy with glasses and the girl from earlier were among the faces (Y/n) saw on the bus.
But there was one in particular that was far less...welcoming, to (Y/n)'s gaze. And it all came out suddenly as (Y/n) was stepping off the bus when out of nowhere someone grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him around the side of the vehicle where no one could see them. It was by no surprise when (Y/n)'s head was slammed against the metal side of the bus only for his eyes to blast open. Seconds later, the face of Kaito came into sight. A familiar look of rage and jealousy was clear as day on display.
One to which (Y/n) responded with nothing but silence, though the narrowed gaze he offered was enough to show the anger being held back as his body was once against slammed against the metal surface.
Kaito: "Listen here, Deku. I want you to get one thing clear, alright? You are not better than me! You have never have been! Never will be! I don't care what people say! You didn't save me!"
Just speaking it out brought a sense of anger to Kaito, who quickly shoved (Y/n)'s body against the bus once more.
Kaito: "You were just lucky! You hear me?! Lucky! You're no hero! Never have been! Never will be!" [Chuckles] "And today I'm going to prove you're not even worthy to be my rival. I'm better than you in every single way. And I'll prove it, by not only getting more points today than you."
Again, Kaito slammed (Y/n) against the bus. And yet again, (Y/n) accepted it. No emotion crossed his face whatsoever as Kaito continued to speak out, (Y/n) just stared right at him. That was until (Y/n) had enough of waiting and sent a right hook directly across Kaito's face. It was unexpected from the male, to the point by the time Kaito reacted, he was already on the ground with (Y/n) standing over him.
(Y/n): "Look, Kaito. You hate me. I don't care about you. That's how life's always been between us. But here's the thing. I could care less about whether you think I'm a hero or not. Because you know what? I don't care. I'm here in U.A. because I need to be here. So just stay out of my way... Otherwise, I won't be so considerate next time."
With his words coming to an end, (Y/n) offers a final glare toward the boy who had bullied him throughout his entire junior high lifespan. A hint of a green glow surrounded his pupils as he did So, before he walked away. A few seconds later (Y/n) appeared from out of behind the bus, his hand flapping about as he dealt with the pain that came with punching someone. On the opposite end of the vehicle, Kaito could be seen walking away. Though, of course, not without glaring at (Y/n) as he did so. But as (Y/n)'s earlier words suggested, he couldn't care less for Kaito. So, he just went back to preparing for the exam...That was until--
"Okay, start!"
(Y/n): "Huh?"
One by one everyone's eyes were immediately in the direction of the voice. The voice belonged to the Voice Hero himself, Present Mic, who could now he saw standing atop one of the stone pillars that made up the wall that surrounded the battle city. Though the hero seemed confused by the number of faces that were just looking at him.
Present Mic: "What's wrong? There are no countdowns in real fights! Run! Run! Run!
The die has been cast, you know?"(Y/n): "This guy really is just like he is on the radio, huh? Huh?"Before (Y/n)'s mind could even process his own words he suddenly noticed a lack of people out of the corner of his eye. Mainly due to the fact that everyone that was previously standing there had now started rushing into the opened gates of the battle city. As soon as (Y/n) noticed such he wasted no time in taking off himself. An annoyed irritation ran through his body as he tried to catch up. He needed to get points, and quick! Otherwise, becoming a Pro Hero would be the furthest of his problems.
(Y/n): "Come on, (Y/n)! You got this! Not only do you have your Quirk, but you have All For One as well. You can't give up now! This is for Izuku and all the other failures you've made in life!"
--Flashback--
The orange sky gave off a perfect backdrop for a silent afternoon that covered the city of Musutafu. Though whereas everything seemed like the perfect moment for peace, there was anything but peace for the Midoriya family, as a Ten Year Old (Y/n) would soon find out. A tired expression pressed across the young boy's face as he lazily carried his yellow backpack over his shoulders before he reached out and opened the front door to the apartment building he and his Mother lived in.
(Y/n): "Mom! I'm home!"
He called out half-heartedly as he stepped into the house. Closing the door behind him (Y/n) was quick to discard his shoes off his feet and placed his bag on the ground. A few seconds passed after he lifted his head to receive no reply from his Mother. Which was odd. She'd normally say something, even if it didn't sound full of life. But today, she said nothing. It was enough of an oddity that it stuck with (Y/n) to the point instead of walking down the hall to his room like he normally would, he instead took the first left where the kitchen was located. It was odd.
(Y/n) and his Mother had been living in this apartment for almost three years now, pretty much straight after Izuku died. Obviously, Inko didn't want to be in a house that reminded her of shut a horrid moment, (Y/n) understood that well. Yet, despite the years that passed by, (Y/n) still sometimes struggles to remember the exact layout of this small complex in which he now called home. Thankfully it wasn't too long before he found his Mom in the kitchen sitting at the table talking on the phone to someone.
As soon as (Y/n) noticed such, he quickly pulled his body back around the corner and softly pressed himself up against the wall. Silence followed for a few seconds before the tired voice of his Mother suddenly sounded.
"Yes, Mom...I'm looking after myself."
"No. He's fine. He's going to school every day again."
"Yes. I'm still seeing the therapist."
With each sentence that came from his Mother's voice, a wave of silence would separate them. Most likely to allow the constant responses from her Mother to come through. (Y/n) wasn't surprised to find his Mother talking his Grandma yet again. It seemed out of everyone, she was the person who was still making sure Mom was okay. It was no surprise, really. Any parent would do such for their child.
Though with each response that came from his Mother, (Y/n) could clearly sense the tiredness in her voice. Not exactly due to lack of sleep, though (Y/n) was sure that was playing a part. But the type of tired where someone was just done with everything life had for them. Whenever (Y/n) was in the same presence of his Mother, she'd always put on a smile and act as if everything was alright. But now (Y/n) knew otherwise.
"He's given me some pills. But I honestly don't know if they work. They don't feel like they do."
"No. Mom. You don't have to come here. I know. I know. You have extra rooms there, but me and (Y/n) need to cope with it, Mom. It's been three years now almost, but..."
"...I-I just can't seem to forget about it. He...He was so young. I should have known better than to let a monster into my home."
And then there was the familiar sound of his Mother breaking down. There had been plenty of nights after the incident where (Y/n) would lay awake at night in his bed. Unable to sleep due to the sound of his Mothers crying and moans echoing through the walls. Just hearing those pleas for a second chance broke (Y/n) down more than even he could know himself.
(Y/n) had already blamed himself for what happened, but hearing his Mother's pleas fill the air only stabbed the truth into the young boy's gut. When (Y/n) first got this pain in his gut after hearing his Mother's cries, all he would do was beg that he could go back and be the one to step out instead of Izuku and not be consumed by fear.
(Y/n) still felt that to this very day. But in this day and age, that gut-wrenching pain was joined by something else. A commitment. A declaration to his fallen brother and grieving Mother. A promise that he'd not fail again, and he'd make sure all Monsters that fill this world would be brought to judgment. And if (Y/n) wanted to do that...
--Present--
...It all started with today. With the opening of his eyes (Y/n) was suddenly brought back to reality. Pulled from his thoughts the sound of explosions and countless Quirks going off quickly filled the air as he looked around him at the different pieces of action that was taking place within the battle city. The sight of these hopeful students putting their Quirks on display as they fought off the different Faux villains was the main spectacle as (Y/n) witnessed the process before his very eyes.
But his attention was suddenly sparked elsewhere when out of nowhere a wall exploded right in front of him. Before he was able to comprehend his action (Y/n)'s gaze fell upon the slick green-plated metal of one of the very robots that they were tasked to take out. This one, however, was heading straight for (Y/n). And fast. It didn't take long for (Y/n) to click into gear. His eyes quickly focusing in on the number that was printed on the robot's shoulder.
(Y/n): "Alright, (Y/n), you got this. This villain is only one point. You've played video games before. The lower ground forces are normally easy. This should be a piece of cake."
He said this just as the large red eye that sat dead centre on the robot's head began to focus in on (Y/n)'s face.
"Target acquired. I'll kill you!"
(Y/n): "Okay...Maybe not a piece of cake. Hehe..." [Closes eyes] "No. Don't let the fear consume you. Block it out. You need to do this. Not for yourself... But for him."
It was as those last three words filled the air that (Y/n)'s perplexed emotions that currently owned his face disappeared. In their place, a more serious expression found its birth. It was only put further on display as (Y/n) opened his eyes. A green aura now surrounded his pupils as anger coursed through his system. No fear whatsoever was within his body. Instead, it was replaced with rage. So now it's time to rage!
It was with that confirmation that all (Y/n) needed was now complete. Closing his eyes once more (Y/n) wasted no time jumping into the air and clenching his fist backward. As he did so, he could feel the power of his first Quirk coursing through his veins. And just like that...Time picked up. Within seconds of (Y/n)'s eyes opening his fist was sent flying forward, a fierce scream launching from his mouth as a wave of green and black chaotic energy formed around his fist.
(Y/n): "AAARRRGGGHHH!!!"
The sound of crunching metal was the thing that broke (Y/n)'s concentration. The one noticeable sound he heard as his fist pierced through the stick endoskeleton of the enemy. Once that layer was broken, the rest of its body was like cutting paper. A single strike from the young boy was all it took to shatter the robot into three distinguished pieces. The thing most caught on about the aftermath, however, was the realization a point had been earned in (Y/n)'s favor.
Seconds later (Y/n)'s shoes skidded along the rough ground as an explosion from what remained of the robot went off behind him. But just like any hero, he witnessed as a kid. He didn't turn back to look at the explosion. Instead, he just took in the fact that his first steps toward becoming a Pro Hero had been taken. Once that hit (Y/n), any process that came afterward was nothing but a walk in the park.
So, as the chaos continued to go on around the battle city, (Y/n) could be seen using his natural Quirk to take down as many robots as he could. All the while he was joined in the activity by all other young men and women that sought to be accepted into U.A. Academy. Before long, 8 minutes of the urban exam had already passed. Most of it was spent with robots getting destroyed by a plethora of awesome abilities.
By this point, (Y/n) had wracked up a total of 97 points. But it was at this point, as another discarded robot head fell at his feet, that (Y/n) realized he had yet to use One For All. Upon realizing such, his gaze dropped down to his opened hands. Doubt quickly setting itself back into his system. That was, until he remembered what All Might had said to him earlier that day before he had left the beach.
"You should feel an effect of my powers coursing through your body in a few hours. When you feel it (Y/n). Do not hold back. Concentrate on something that drives you forward. Then...Let it go. Use that thought to harness your power. And then show everyone watching what All For One is really capable of."
(Y/n): "Concentrate on something that drives me forward?"
He repeated. Those had been the words that stuck out most to (Y/n). But before he was unable to put it to action, his attention was taken elsewhere as more Faux villains came charging his way. That, and all the other chaos that filled the battle city could all be seen being monitored from an unknown station elsewhere within the school. Within this darkly lit room, various unknown teachers, heroes, and even the Principal of U.A. could watch these young children looking to showcase just why they should be accepted into this highly sought-after school.
Noticeable faces like Uraraka, Bakugo, Kaito, and the boy with glasses, all showed up on the screens. But out of everyone in the room, All Might's gaze focused solely on his successor. The Number One Hero watched closely at all of (Y/n)'s movements, yet he was surprised to see no activation of All for One yet from the young boy. Which was odd. Normally enticing such a thing, you'd want to use it straight away. But (Y/n) hadn't. Just seeing that only brought a smirk to All Might's already wide lips as he came to realize (Y/n) wasn't just trusting on the powers given to him. But his own might!
Yet, even so, there were times when Heroes had to go all out. And if (Y/n) wanted to become a hero, he'd have to use all he's got. And what better way to do such than to offer a task so challenging that even someone with the strongest Quirk would second guess things? And it all came about with a single press of a button. It was in this moment, that a real test would be delivered to these aspiring heroes. A moment where only the true heroes would stand up to keep the peace. A sudden explosion in the distance was what started it all.
It didn't take much for the gathered teenagers standing in the centre of the battle city to notice the large cloud of smoke that was fastly approaching their destination. Looks of worry and concern were quick to find their faces as a large shadow started to loom over them all. Shattering windows and crumbling builds were all precurses to what was really waiting (Y/n) and the others. It was only as each person present slowly lifted their head a little higher, that through the dust that had quickly arisen, they saw what was facing them.
A large Faux villain, one towering above any other. Even the buildings were fairly small compared to this monstrous being that looked down at them from high in the sky. Horror quickly swept in through the crowd, as (Y/n) started questioning what he could possibly do in the moment. That was when his mind had drifted back to the orientation that happened earlier.
"Of course, there is also the Faux Villain that offers no points. This one will go crazy in narrow spaces. It will certainly be a difficult obstacle to pass. But you should all expect such things in life, especially if you wish to become a Pro Hero. Though I do recommend you listeners try to avoid it!"
Though, after remembering that, (Y/n) could only respond with one thing as he stared at the behemoth of an opponent.
(Y/n): [Thoughts] "If you wanted us to avoid it...Why'd you make it so damn big?!"
But no one else seemed to be focused on that particular part other than (Y/n). Instead, they were more so focusing on the 'avoiding' it, part. Such was clear as day as everyone present immediately turned around and started running for their lives. Only pushed further as the giant Faux Villain sent a massive metal fist directly toward the ground. A great rumble tore through the air as the ground violently shook. Another cloud of smoke flooding the air. One that pushed passed (Y/n) as he stood in place, using a hand to cover his face from the dirt and dust.
But as (Y/n) gathered himself from the sudden attack, his attention was soon directed toward the number of people running passed him. All screaming as they did their best to give themselves as much distance between themselves and the giant robot. Just seeing everyone else running set about an automatic movement for (Y/n) to do the same. But it was just as his foot was about to make that first movement in fleeing, himself, that it froze. Within seconds his mind was directed back to that horrid night, when he allowed fear to control his life.
"Someone help!"
The sudden voice immediately broke him from his nightmares. (Y/n)'s gaze returning to reality just in time for the wall of dust to part just enough that (Y/n) was able to see who had made that cry for help. Not too far away, some twenty meters or so, the girl (Y/n) had met earlier that day could be seen struggling to remove her foot from a piece of rubble that had fallen with the attack from the giant robot. Desperately she tried to free herself, but she just could not find the strength. It was at this point that (Y/n) was brought back to the time he was a child, and just watched on as his Izuku was the hero.
His little brother had died that night. But he died a hero. He didn't allow the fear to control him as he defended his Mother against a monster. And now, as (Y/n) is faced with a similar moment years later, he realizes that this is his moment to rectify that haunting night. And this time...He wasn't going to let fear stand in his way. And so, just like that, (Y/n) crushed the ground as he planted his foot back on the ground. He wasn't going to run away. He was going to stand tall and take fear on, head first! As Izuku did the night he died. So, as everyone else ran away. (Y/n) walked forward.
A stone-cold look on his face as he stepped through the smoke. Nothing could stop him in his quest to make his brother proud."Concentrate on something that drives you forward."All Might's words came to (Y/n), almost magically. This time, as soon as he took them in, he knew what to concentrate on. He'd focus on the pain he felt. The regret he suffered through. His brother's torture and his mother's turmoil. He'd concentrate on it all. But not to be sick inside about himself. But to remind him what he was fighting for.
Why he couldn't lose! And why he needed to become a hero! It was with that, that (Y/n) launched into the air. As he did so, a red blow enveloped his body. But not just that. Sparkling streams of this red light ran throughout his body, as all eyes, students, onlooking teachers, and his Brother alike, witnessed what was about to happen. It was in this moment that not just a hero was born. But a savior. Someone who would put an end to world suffering. And bring true peace to all who lived in it. And it all started with just a single punch.
(Y/n): "AAARRRGGGHHH!!!"
The torrenting sound rocketed from (Y/n)'s vocals as all power went into his fist. The look of pure rage on his face pushing him forward as he sent his fist flying, and smashing directly into the head of the giant Faux robot. A tiny sonic boom went off as (Y/n)'s enclosed fist pressed further into the robot's head. Enough force was applied that the robot was soon sent flying backward. Pieces of its face crumbled into ashes of metal at every angle as explosion after explosion erupted around itself.
As this happened, down below, everyone watched on in pure shock at the incredible feat of strength that had just taken place. No one, whether it be the teenagers watching from the ground below, or the teachers in the examination room, not one had their mouth closed as they saw what had just happened. As for (Y/n), he couldn't believe it himself. He knew his own Quirk was powerful. But this... This was something else! His final thought, however, before gravity started to play its part, was placed on Izuku. A soft smile found (Y/n)'s lips as he looked up at the blue sky above him.
(Y/n): "I did it, Izuku. I...I only wish you were here with me..."
With that, a new goal came into (Y/n)'s mind... How to land. As soon as he realized that the pressure of gravity was building around him, (Y/n) was only given just a narrow bit of time to twist his body around and place his fist out to protect his fall. And thanks to One For All, the applied strength to his arm was strong enough to take all the damage for him. A small crater built around his body as he landed. Sweat running down his forehead as he glanced over at the arm that offered the punch. He was completely fine. He couldn't believe it.
(Y/n): "I'm...I'm okay? I'm really oka--The girl!"
Before he knew it (Y/n)'s mind was taken from himself, and placed on the girl who was in the crossroads of the giant robot previously to (Y/n) punching it. But the beating of his heart was soon rested when he saw that the girl he had protected was being assisted by a group of other participants. Seeing that was all it took for (Y/n) to release a sigh of relief. Though, it wasn't long until his attention was sparked once more.
"Look! It's the guy who saved the girl! He's alright!"
(Y/n): "Huh?"
Lifting his head was all it took for (Y/n) to realize just how many people were looking at him. Faces of awe and bewilderment were there to face him in every possible direction. It was hard to come by for (Y/n). It didn't feel real. But he ultimately didn't deserve it. That's why, it was a surprise to all who watched, that as (Y/n) got to his feet. He did not boast. Or act cool. Or even acknowledge the cheers that came his way.
Instead, with his free hand holding his arm, he kept his head low and walked off as the sound of each exam was signalled to an end. This was definitely shocking to all. As the people that participated in the event could only watch on as (Y/n) took his exit without even a word. People like the boy with glasses couldn't believe such a thing. Whilst the rage and anger on Kaito's face seemed to only showcase that a fuse was close to being broken.
Kaito: "My...My moment...He took my moment. M-My shining moment. (Y/n)...Deku...He took it from me?"
The rage on his face was quick to shift to more confusion and disbelief the anything else. But out of them all, none was more shocked than Uraraka herself. Even though her body could hardly move. She made sure to lift her head in order to find the boy who saved her and thank him. But when she saw (Y/n) was simply walking away without saying anything. She couldn't help but be confused by it all. That was when she was reminded of the words Bakugo spoke earlier that day.
"...You can just blame it on his youth."
--One Week Later--
Bakugo: "Dude, I'm telling you. You'll get in!"
The voice of Bakugo sounded as the crickets and other nightlife filled the air with their sweet songs. Currently, the scruffy blonde could be seen walking alongside his best friend, the pair now dressed in casual clothes drinking smoothies as they headed on their way home. Though, most of the walk home was just Bakugo repeatedly stating why (Y/n) would be accepted into U.A.
Bakugo: "I mean, you took out a literal giant robot with just a single punch? That's so awesome that alone should get you in if your points don't."
(Y/n): "I don't know, man. If I was going to be accepted, why haven't I received a letter from them yet?"
Bakugo: "Maybe they forgot?"
(Y/n): "This is U.A. Bakugo. Not you forgetting to do your homework."
Bakugo: "Well...Maybe it got sent to the wrong apartment? I mean, you live in a complex with like...A hundred people?"
(Y/n): "Unlikely. The mail is sorted into each apartment's post box every morning. I don't see a mix-up happening just now."
Bakugo: "Well...Maybe the dog ate it when you weren't home?"
(Y/n): "Dude...I don't have a dog."
Bakugo: "Right. Right...Maybe--"
(Y/n): "Maybe it just isn't coming!"
The words came quick and hard. Enough so that a good ten seconds of silence followed them. As it did, it gave Bakugo to get a good look at the sorrowful face that had quickly dawned over (Y/n). It was weird. (Y/n) had only wanted to get into U.A. so he could become a Pro Hero and keep his promise to his brother.
But a part of him was kinda excited to go for the opportunity itself. Like, he had always wanted to go when he was a little kid, just like Izuku. But now, after not receiving any confirmation, even after all he went through, the countless training, the extended pain on his body, only to get nothing back? He couldn't help but feel disappointed in himself.
(Y/n): "You got your letter days ago saying you got accepted. We live in the same neighbourhood, so why didn't I get my letter?" [Sighs] "Maybe I should just start facing reality and move on?"
Bakugo could only watch on. He hated seeing his friend this way.
Bakugo: "Dude..."
(Y/n): [Chuckles lightly] "Oh, well. It was an odd chance that someone like me would get in anyway, right?" [Yawns] "Alright. I think I better get home before Mom starts worrying. I'll see ya around, dude."
A quick fist bump and (Y/n) went on his own direction. Leaving Bakugo to just stand there for a moment as he watched in silence.
Bakugo: "Yeah... See ya."
Not a word came from (Y/n) the rest of the trip home. Even when he got home and sat at the table to eat dinner, he didn't speak a word. Instead, he just remained silently and slowly ran his chopsticks through his food. That was until the voice of his mother sounded.
Inko: "...(Y/n)? (Y/n)? (Y/n)?"
(Y/n): "Hmm?"
Slowly lifting his head, (Y/n)'s blank gaze met his concerned mothers as she held a bowl of rice in her hand.
Inko: "Is everything all right? Why are you just staring at your food?"
(Y/n): "O-Oh. Uh, right! Sorry! I'm fine, Mom. J-Just go back to eating!"
And just like when he was a kid, (Y/n) would put on a smile and pretend everything was all right, even when it wasn't. If only to ease his mother's worries. Later, after dinner was finished and Inko was doing the dishes. (Y/n) found himself sitting on the couch staring at the TV in front of him. Despite the countless things he could have been focused on. (Y/n) found his conscious focused on nothing. Well, not exactly nothing.
(Y/n): [Thoughts] "I failed...I let Izuku down. I-If I didn't get into U.A., t-then how else am I supposed to become a Pro Hero and stop all types of evil? I can't just walk around the street and wait for trouble. I needed to become a Pro Hero to stop chaos all over the world. But...I failed...Now I can't keep my promise. I can't even ask All Might, I haven't been able to contact him since the exam."
It was at this moment that Inko was exiting the kitchen. Only to come to an abrupt stop when she saw the blank expression on (Y/n)'s face. An attempt at a supportive smile was quick to find her lips.
Inko: "The results should arrive today or tomorrow, right? I'm sure you did great!"
(Y/n): "...Yeah. I hope so."
Inko: "Jeez! I think it's even amazing that you applied for U.A. Izuku would be so proud of you!"
(Y/n): "...Yeah."Of course, (Y/n) didn't tell his mother about what happened with All Might, and he had never used his first Quirk around her ever again after the night Izuku died. So (Y/n) wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even know he had one in the first place. But (Y/n) really didn't care about that at the moment. All he could think about was the giant opportunity he had let down. However, it was times like this, when all hope seemed lost, that miracles can arrive in the blink of an eye...Or the...ring of a doorbell?
Ding! Dong!
That one sound was enough to spark (Y/n)'s consciousness awake. His head twisting around to look over the couch as Inko approached the door. There, on the ground, a white envelope with the U.A. creat printed could be seen. It took Inko a few seconds to realize. But when she did, she immediately made it known.
Inko: "It's here! It came!"
(Y/n): "What?!"
As soon as he heard it (Y/n) sprung to his feet and raced into the hallway where his Mother was. There, he saw her looking down into her hands. There, the envelope rested. One addressed to (Y/n) himself. He couldn't believe it. Slowly, as if afraid a sudden movement would reveal that all of this was nothing but a dream, (Y/n) reached out and took the envelope from his Mother.
Immediately he contemplated going to his room to open it or not. In the end, he decided, there and then, he'd open it. So he did. A few seconds of anticipated silence followed as Inko anticipatively watching her son for any movement to reveal the results that awaited him inside the letter. Eventually, after (Y/n) had read through the whole thing, he slowly lifted his eyes to meet his Mothers own and smiled.
(Y/n): "...I got in."
It was with those very words that the course was set for (Y/n) Midoriya and the future that awaited him. For now, he was one step closer to keeping his promise and delivering the peace everyone in this world deserved. And he was going to continue to press forward, not letting anything stop him. Whether that be villains, bullies, or anything in between. He was done taking the backseat in life. Now it was time to get out there and fight. Because in the end, that's exactly what heroes do.
[And with that, chapter 3 comes to a close. I don't really expect for this chapter to do overly well on comments as the start of BnHA is fairly plain in the sense of a fanfiction. But nonetheless, I felt I at least had to write this for the purpose of my story revolving around the characters, and in 10k words, I feel I accomplished that. So, in saying that, I hope you did enjoy it! If you did, please, feel free to vote and comment, as those do help me out a bunch mentally. Haha. Anyway, with that aside, I'll leave this with you. I'll see you all next week for another chapter! See ya!]
