after fifty-three seasons of danganronpa, a double mastermind wasn't a new occurrence, even if it was still pretty rare. but having the mastermind being the people that the audience followed along the most? the ones who seemed most determined to end the game? the ones who seemed to drive the class trials the most?

nobody would ever see it coming. that's what made it such a good idea. the two were amazing actors, and had everyone fooled. team danganronpa could only find one theory on the internet about kaede being the mastermind, and one about shuichi, among the hundreds that existed. but never together.

shuichi was a unique mastermind, but kaede was a classic, members of team danganronpa always said. despite the revolutionary plot twist of a protagonist mastermind, she was a 'classic' in that some team danganronpa employees seemed to liken her to junko enoshima herself. bubbly, teasing, great at manipulation and acting, and great at treating everything she'd worked toward like a game.

when the two's original personalities were erased, and their new ones uploaded into their body, they began the planning process. it came together rather fast, but it took enough time for the ultimate despairs to fall hopelessly head over heels for each other. you know the stereotypical 'yandere' trope in anime in manga? imagine a relationship with two of them. willing to kill anyone who got in the way, obsessively making sure the other was theirs and only theirs. but it was never like the other was complaining— they found it endearing, as they felt the same way.

now, though, the only time they could be their real selves were in the mastermind's lab, or in one of their rooms. for the rest of the game, they had to keep up the 'determined protagonist' act.

tsumugi shirogane had just been executed for the murder of rantaro amami. she didn't do it, of course. time was running out without anybody dead, and kaede and shuichi needed to act fast to start the killing. so who was the perfect target?

amami, who'd been starting to catch onto the existence of a mastermind, and his old talent. amami, who'd been flirting with kaede. they both agreed that he needed to go. so kaede held him still as shuichi administered the blow to the head. they left him there, and the next time they saw him, he was dead. good riddance.

good riddance to tsumugi, too! killing games were supposed to be fun, and tsumugi was just so boring. she fought it to the end, vehemently insisting that she hadn't done it, but they'd been able to manipulate the crime scene into incriminating her. the execution was thrilling to watch, and it was difficult for kaede to force herself to cry instead of react how she really wanted to. she was so proud of the execution they'd created for her, and seeing it come to life was really something else!

when shuichi made it back to his room that night, shutting the door behind him, he'd notice a small, half-sheet of paper lying on his bed. there was a message on it, neatly written in loopy handwriting and purple ink.

meet me at our lab when you get this, or i'll come take you myself ~ ! be careful, don't let anyone catch you on your way ! (⋈◍>◡<◍)。✧♡

as much as kaede was in love with shuichi, one of her favorite pastimes was to tick him off. she could tell that the detective wasn't usually amused by any time she hinted at their real role in the killing game any time they weren't alone behind closed doors, so now, she took every chance she got to do it.

besides looking to see shuichi's reaction, kaede's favorite part of this pastime was seeing how the other students never suspected a thing! they were so dumb, she thought, and so trusting! they'd never suspect people that helped them— and that would be their downfall.

the pianist had started to try and slip in small comments into her daily conversation with shuichi, hinting at how the two of them knew a little more than everybody else. " i forget , did monokuma say anything about a new motive ? oh , that hasn't happened yet ? " " wasn't (some unannounced event) supposed to happen today? " and on and on.

today, she seemed especially intent on making shuichi mad at her— they'd gone into the currently-empty library together, in order to talk in their shared lab. " oh ! want me to go stand watch while you open the door ? " kaede suggested. " we wouldn't want anyone finding out we're the masterminds , after all ~ ! "
