"You look beautiful." Ricky grinned, handing Lavender the bouquet of flowers he had brought her. Lavender rolled her eyes with a laugh, looking down at her red dress and thanking him for the flowers. "Let me go put these in water."
Ricky nodded, patting his thighs awkwardly as she disappeared into her living room. He clicked his tongue, swaying back and forth to the beat of the song that was stuck in his head. Minutes later, Lavender returned, a smile resting across her lips as she closed the front door behind her.
"Sucks that you guys lost the game." Lavender said as he opened the car door for her.
Ricky shrugged, leaning on the door as he watched her strap herself in. "I think we crushed it."
Lavender let out a laugh as he closed the truck's door and walked to the other side. She watched as he got into the drivers side and sent her a small grin. "I mean, I always do better in volleyball than you do in football."
Ricky rolled his eyes, "Whatever crayon girl."
"Fruit boy." Lavender stuck her tongue out at him as she stifled a laugh. "I see your wearing a red tie.. Matching?"
"Matching." Ricky confirmed. A small smile rested on Lavender's lips as she tore her eyes from Ricky's face and looked out the window.
"You're a dork." She laughed, covering her mouth with her hand but being careful to not mess up her makeup. Ricky rolled his eyes as he mimicked her sentence, causing a loud laugh to leave her lips. "I'm gonna have so much fun at this stupid dance."
~~
"Woah.. They really went all out for this place." Lavender commented, looking up at the nicely decorated gym. "They did this place up better then they do for anything else.. Makes sense that the theatre kids hate this place."
The loud music filled her ears as she looked around at the dancing students. A smile formed on her face as she heard the familiar opening chords of her favorite song. "Holy shit! I love this song!"
Lavender slipped her hand into Ricky's and pulled him into the crowd, causing the darker boy to laugh as he stumbled behind her. "Woah! Slow down, crayon girl."
"No can do, fruit boy." Lavender giggled, swaying her hips to the music. She looked behind him, her smile faltering when her eyes landed on Sydney. A sigh left her lips and her arms fell to her sides. Ricky furrowed his eyebrows in confusion as he watched her once happy expression fall.
"What's wrong?" He asked carefully, his voice softening as his eyes scanned her face in concern. Lavender looked up at him after tearing her eyes away from the smiling girl, "Oh, nothing! Don't worry about it."
Ricky rose his eyebrows as the music changed to a slow song. He inhaled sharply as he slowly slid his arms around her waist. Lavender rested her arms on his shoulders as she looked up at the ceiling. Seconds passed agonizingly slow as she felt a pair of eyes staring holes into them. It took everything in her to not look at Sydney.. to give her what she wanted.
"So.. Why'd you really ask me to be your date?" Ricky asked, causing Lavender to tear her eyes from the ceiling and look at him. The slow song played over the speakers as Lavender knitted her eyebrows together.
"C'mon.. You and I both know that you don't like me. Not like that." Ricky pointed out, "So.. Why me?"
Lavender fell silent as she glanced over at Sydney and Stanley who sat on the bleachers together. "Uh.."
"Is it because of what happened with Sydney?" Ricky interrupted as he spun her, "You didn't look too happy after she said whatever she did."
Lavender sighed, tearing her eyes from the girl the moment Sydney turned her head in that direction. "She told me our kiss didn't mean anything."
Ricky took a double-take, "Woah.. Woah, woah. Wait-wait.. Did you say kiss? Damn.."
Lavender cracked a smile at the sound of his stammering, "Yeah..she said nothing even happened. So obviously she didn't care about my feelings. I promise I'm not using you or anything."
"You having fun?" He interrupted as he swayed with the girl to the tune of the music. Lavender knitted her eyebrows together, nodding slowly and mumbling a barely audible yeah. "Good... You're not using me, then."
Lavender's smile widened as she looked away from him and back towards Sydney. "I'm glad you're my date, fruit boy."
"I'm glad you're my date, crayon girl." Ricky countered with a teasing grin. "Best date ever, in my humble opinion."
~~
"Lav," Lavender froze in her spot at the sound of Sydney's voice. "You look good."
Lavender slowly turned around and leaned on the punch table. "Hm. Thanks.. I like your dress."
"Thanks.." Sydney nodded awkwardly, glancing over at Stanley and Dina who stood awkwardly by the bleachers."Um... I'm sorry.. I'm sorry for everything I've said."
Ricky watched in the distance, his hands shoved deep into his pockets as he pulled his lip in between his teeth, bracing himself for Lavender's reaction. Lavender paused, glancing over at her date momentarily before trailing her eyes up Sydney's body. "Did you mean what you said?"
Sydney shook her head quickly, tightening her grip on the red solo cup. "No.. Of course not.. When you kissed me.. I-I can't explain it... I-I just wanted you to do that forever."
Lavender's cheeks reddened as she reached forward, taking the cup from Sydney's hands. Without breaking eye contact, the taller girl raised the cup to her lips and raised her left eyebrow, urging her to continue. Sydney gulped as she felt beads of sweat beginning to form on her forehead. "And I'm sorry. I'm so fucking sorry, I-I was just scared... But I'm not scared anymore."
Lavender quirked an eyebrow as a sly smirk trailed onto her lips as she handed Sydney back her cup. She bit her lip as she looked Sydney up and down. Sydney blushed as Lavender sent her a wink.
"Save me a dance?" Lavender sent her a small smile as she looked up from the bracelet hanging around her wrist.
Sydney nodded awkwardly, her eyes trailing from Lavender's emerald eyes to her soft lips. "Of course.."
Sydney's voice was barely audible as a ghost of a smile blessed her freckled face. Lavender grinned, resting her hand as Sydney's shoulder "Good. Come find me when you're ready."
"O-Okay, sure, yeah. Of course." Lavender's lips curved into a smile as she handed Sydney's cup of punch back to her. She greeted Stanley briefly as she weaved through the crowd of dancing teenagers.
Another slow song began to play over the speakers as Lavender continued her search for Ricky. She quietly hummed the lyrics to the song as she pushed past students. "Oh, fruit boy! There you are."
"Here I am." He joked, "They're about to announce the Homecoming king and queen.. Wanna dance while we wait?"
"Why the hell not?" Lavender grinned, sliding her arms around Ricky's neck as she looked up at him. Lavender closed her eyes as she rested her head against Ricky's chest, quietly humming the song to herself as she let her mind wander to Sydney.
"Your hair smells good. Does that sound weird?" Ricky laughed, causing a giggle to leave Lavender's lips as she rolled her eyes.
"Weirdo." Lavender poked him in the chest, "But you smell good too."
"Probably fruity, right?" Ricky joked, causing Lavender to roll her eyes.
"Of cour-"
"All right ladies and gentlemen!" Lavender's sentence was cut short by the teacher, causing her to pull from Ricky's grasp and look towards the stage. "If I may have your attention.. Stop talking, look up here please. It is my privilege to announce this year's Homecoming king and queen! Jeff Butters and Julie Frasheski!"
Lavender cheered, a snicker leaving her lips when she saw that Julie was the cheerleader she'd slept with the other night. "Fuck yeah! Go Julie!"
"What up, Westinghouse?" Jeff shouted, taking the mic from the teacher, "Yeah! Where my boys at? Whoo! Where do I begin? I wanna thank my mom for meeting my dad-"
Lavender knitted her eyebrows together in confusion as she watched Bradley stumble onto the stage and steal the mic from Jeff. She looked over at Ricky, who looked equally confused. "What's he doing?"
"I-I don't know.." Ricky mumbled, "Something he shouldn't."
"Listen up!" He shouted, aggressively shoving Jeff back. "Give me a second, give me a second! I would like to take this moment to talk about something very important.. Something that affects everyone here. Sydney Novak."
Lavender's blood ran cold as she looked over at her. Sydney looked horrified as she shook her head carefully. Bradley stepped off the stage, a sly smirk playing against his lips. "Hey, Sydney. Raise your hand. Give a little wave so everyone can see you.. You see.. What people don't know around here.. is that Sydney is one hell of a writer."
The color visibly drained from her face as Bradley pulled the diary from his jacket. "You know.. You know, it's funny! Because everyone is so quick to call me the asshole! But while I was downstairs banging Jenny Tuffield at Ricky's party.. Guess what Sydney was doing upstairs?"
"Bradley, man, shut up." Ricky shook his head, "C'mon-"
"She was kissing my girlfriend! Wishing it was Lavender fucking Greene.. Who, by the way, is my best friend's date tonight." Lavender narrowed her eyes, feeling anger wash over her as she set her glare on him.
"Brad, shut the fuck up you piece of shit." Lavender sneered, "I'll kill you my damn self!"
Brad rolled his eyes, ignoring the girl as he approached Sydney. "Now, don't get me wrong.. Chicks get drunk, they make out sometimes.. And I'm all for it. But.. being a full on dyke? That's a whole other ball game."
Lavender was seething as she struggled to pull her hand away from Ricky's. "Lav.. You'll get expelled."
Lavender kept her eyes focused on Brad as she continued to struggle against Ricky's grip, "Lav, he'll hurt you. I don't wanna see that."
"I mean.. Syd is in fucking love with Lavender!" Lavender knitted her eyebrows together as she slowly stopped her struggling. Tears slipped from Sydney's eyes, she was unable to tear her eyes away from Bradley as he sent her a menacing smile. "I mean.. it's pathetic, really. Page after page."
"Oh, shut up Brad!" Dina snapped, glancing over at Lavender, Bradley ignored her, continuing to flip through the pages of Sydney's diary.
"And.. don't even get me started on the daddy issues with this one! Everyone in her life thinks she's a piece of shit, and I mean everyone." Bradley snapped the diary shut, "Including Lavender. Do you have any idea how bad the shit you did hurt her? And she just forgave you.. Just like that. You don't deserve her forgiveness, Sydney."
"Hey, man." Stanley's voice tore Lavender's attention from Sydney. "Leave them alo-"
Lavender gasped, covering her mouth as she stumbled back into Ricky's chest. Bradley shook his hand, glancing at the horrified look on his best friend's face. As much as Ricky wanted to stop Brad from doing what he was doing, he was frozen. He snapped out of it, stepping past Lavender and stepping forward, "Brad, dude, what the fuck are you doi-"
His sentence was cut short as Bradley grabbed him by the shoulders as shoved him to the ground on the opposite side of him. Bradley squared his shoulders, setting his harsh glare on Sydney again. "And that is not even the weirdest thing about Sydney Novak.. You see, she claims she has-"
Lavender felt her throat went dry as she became soaked in thick red liquid. A scream left her lips as she looked down at the blood covering her. "Oh.. Oh. F-Fu... Fuck."
Everything became a blur as she locked eyes with Ricky. He watched in horror as her body crumpled to the floor as she fell unconscious. "Shit! Lav!"
He ran up to her, pulling her body away from Bradley's as tears began to form in her eyes, He rested his hands against her cheeks, gently swiping his best friend's blood away from her face. "Crayon girl.. Hey, hey.. Hey.. Lav, Lav wake up. Lav, come on. Please, wake up!"
Ricky sat motionless, cradling Lavender's body close to his. His white blazer became stained red as he stared emotionless down at the unconscious girl. Ricky could barely acknowledge the chaos around him as students frantically tried to escape the gym. Ricky began to hyperventilate as he replayed the image of watching his best friend dying mere feet in front of him. Tears began to slip down his face as he clutched Lavender's hand in his own. "Lav..C'mon, crayon girl.. You gotta wake up. For me."
He continued to swipe the blood from her cheeks, trying to distract himself from the dead body behind him. "Lav, we.. we have to g-go.. We have to go."
Lavender remained motionless for minutes, though they felt like agonizingly long hours to Ricky, before she finally began to stir. Ricky straightened his back, looking down at her. His lip quivered as she slowly peeled her eyes open. Panic set into the girl immediately, and she could feel her senses begin to shut down as she registered the sticky red substance coating her pale skin and sticking to her hair. She turned to look at Ricky, her eyes frantic as she searched his face for any answers about the event that had just occurred. His hands rested on her cheeks as she shakily rose her hands to his. Her fingers curled around his wrist and hot salty tears began to roll down her blood stained cheeks, "Where's Syd?"
