Chapter Sixteen
We Won
"Where's Bill?" Maya lifted her head from Beverly's shoulder and looked around the dimly lit chamber.
"Georgie?" She whispered, slowly lifting a finger and pointing to where Bill stood, flashlight in hand. The light was shining on Georgie. His arm was missing and the poor boy looked terrified, "Impossible.."
"What took you so long?" He spoke, walking closer to Bill.
"I-I was looking for you this whole time.." Bill spoke, the hurt in his voice cracking Maya's heart.
"I couldn't find my way out of here.. He said I could have my boat back, Billy.."
Bill's shoulder's began shaking as his breathing quickened ever so slightly, "Was she fast?"
"I couldn't keep up with it.."
"She, Georgie.. You call boats she."
"Take me home, Billy"
"Bill.." Maya spoke, only audible to her and Beverly. She began to step forward, tears welling in her eyes, but Beverly gripped her hand tightly. She glanced over at Richie, then to the others as she squeezed Beverly's hand in hers. "I wanna go home! I miss you! I wanna be with mom and dad!"
Tears began freely falling down Bill's face, as well as Maya's. She used to help take care of Georgie, she loved him like he was her little brother.
"I want more than anything for you to be home." Bill croaked, taking short steps forward, "With mom and dad.. I miss you so much.."
"I love you, Billy.."
"I love you, too," He started, before pulling the gun Mike brought up and pointing it at his head, "but you're not Georgie."
Maya gasped as he pulled the trigger, sending his body to the ground. The body began to shake violently as it began to slowly transform into the clown they all desperately wanted nothing to do with.
Shouts and screams of kill it filled Maya's ears as she tried to push down the fear gripping her soul.
"It's not loaded!" She heard Mike's realization.
"Well, fuck." She muttered to herself. Bill pulled the trigger, yet nothing happened. The clown began to scream as the group of friends frantically backed away. It's head snapped to Bill as he backed up. Maya tore her eyes away from the sight, searching her surroundings for a weapon. Rushing to quickly pick up the metal pole she spotted, she yelped when Mike was thrown in front of her.
"Shit, are you okay?" He nodded and pushed himself up. She picked up the metal pole and turned to the clown. Her friends held a tight grip on it's arms and neck as it spun, trying to free itself. She gasped and rushed to Richie's side when IT threw him off. After making sure he was okay she rushed to help the remaining few when he grabbed her hand and held her firmly at his side.
"Bill!" Maya shouted, trying to free herself from Richie's grip. Pennywise held Bill by his face, the look on his face breaking her heart.
"Richie," She seethed, "let me go."
"Let him go!" Beverly spoke up.
"No! I'll take him! I'll take all of you! And I'll feast on your flesh as I feed on your fear!" Pennywise spoke, raising a shaky finger, "Or! You will just leave us be! I will take him! Only him! Then I will have my long rest and you will all live to grow and thrive and lead happy lives! Until old age takes you back to the weeds."
"No!" Maya hissed, trying once again to free herself from Richie's grip, he only tightened it in retaliation, "No!"
"Leave." Bill squeaked, "I'm the one who dragged you all into this..I'm s-s-s-so sorry."
Maya grew angrier as the clown mimicked Bill's stutter.
"Bill, no! We can't leave you!" She continued, dropping the pole she held.
"Go!"
"Guys! We can't!" Beverly agreed, taking Maya's free hand in her own. Richie glanced over at Maya before freeing her hand and stepping forward.
"I told you, Bill. I fucking told you! I don't wanna die! It's your fault," Richie began to pace, his words shocking Maya as her jaw dropped open. "You punched me in the face, you made me walk through shitty water, you brought me to a fuckin' crackhead house.. and now, I'm gonna have to kill this fucking clown."
As it threw Bill aside and charged towards Richie, Maya pulled free of Beverly's grip and grabbed the metal pole once again.
"Welcome to the loser's club, asshole!" Richie hit IT over the head with the bat, causing it to spin towards Mike. Burned arms flew out of it's mouth as Stan picked up an object and hit It. The flute lady appeared, and startled Stan. It went back to chasing Mike before Ben stabbed it threw the chest.
Mike brought it to the ground, and the loser's club began beating it down, each with their respective weapons. Pennywise turned towards Eddie and began to vomit black goop all over him.
"I'm gonna kill you!" Eddie shrieked, charging forward.
Pennywise fell backwards, and changed into Maya's brother.
"You're a fucking dy-" Maya growled and hit Pennywise over the head. It quickly recovered and looked towards Beverly, changing into her father.
"Hey, Bevvie, are you still my littl-" Beverly screamed and shoved the pole down Pennywise's throat.
IT began choking as it slowly retreated and leaned against the well behind it.
"That's why you didn't kill Beverly, cause sh-sh-she wasn't afraid. And we aren't either. Not anymore. Now you're the ones whose afraid. Because you're gonna starve.
It pushed itself into the well, as Maya handed him pole the loser's had passed down.
"Finish it." She whispered.
He raised the pole to kill it once and for all, but his face began to crack and fall off.
"Fear." And it was out of sight. Maya i
Maya breathed out a sigh of relief as she dropped the weapon she had used to help defeat Pennywise.
They won.
She wiped her hands against the shorts she wore, cleaning her hands of the blood.
"Well, I know what I'm doing for my summer experience essay.." Richie joked as he peered over the edge of the well.
"It'll be a damn good essay, too." She nodded, turning her head to look at him. He returned her gaze, and she saw his lips twitch up
Suddenly, the pair burst out laughing, using each other as a crutch so that they would stay standing.
"Wh-Why are you laughing?" Bill asked, his eye brows furrowing.
"Because.. Because this has been the craziest fuckin' summer I've ever had." She managed out, still wheezing through her laughter. Maya wasn't sure what caused this reaction from her, but she believed it was either a coping mechanism or she just couldn't believe what her and her friends had been through.
Beverly felt a smile cross her face until she, too, was laughing. She loved Maya's laughter, it was contagious. It could light up even the darkest of rooms.
Finally, the final five losers looked around before following suit and laughing along with them.
The laughter slowly died down as they looked around at each other.
"Guys," Eddie pointed to the pile of toys in the center of the room, "The kid's are floating down."
Bill began to walk slowly towards a bright yellow coat.
"Oh no.." Maya mumbled, following him, Richie not far behind her. She crouched beside him as he cried into the little yellow raincoat. She wrapped one arm around him, followed by the rest of the group as they all began to comfort him.
Slowly, the group began to file out of the sewers and head back to their homes.
"Maya, Maya, wait!" She heard shouts from behind her as a hand wrapped around her wrist.
The redheaded beauty spun Maya around, and gripped her other hand.
"Hey," She whispered a ghost of a smile etching across her features. This whole experience had caused Beverly to realize something, she really liked Maya. Beverly realized that life was short, too short. Little moments were cherished, simple moments. She had to tell Maya how she felt, before it was too late. Even if Maya didn't feel the same, she had to admit it. Speak it to the world. Pushing her feelings down was killing her, and she had to lessen the burden and finally admit to Maya she liked her.
"Hi," Maya smiled, a red creeping up across her cheeks, "What's up?"
"Uh, well.. Can I talk to you?" Beverly started, nerves beginning to overtake her. She let her hands drop from Maya's, missing the warmth immediately.
"Yeah, of course! You okay?" Maya's blue eyes narrowed in concern as she began to scan Beverly's face for any form of distress.
"Remember our sleepover? Our first one where you accidentally told me you liked girls?"
"Yeah," Maya nodded, smiling fondly at the memory, "I reached peak dumbassery that day."
Beverly inhaled sharply, hating how nervous she was.
"So, I know we haven't been friends for that long, but, uh.. there's something I need to tell you." Beverly was stalling, she knew that. Now that she was finally here, in this situation, she began to second guess herself.
"Anything, what is it?"
Beverly took a deep breath, as she slowly reached for her hand once again. Feeling it better to just say it, rather than to agonize herself by stalling.
"I like you."
