Chapter 5: At the lake

//

I received a text message from Harry asking if she'd arrived. She hadn't. I was waiting for Melody, one of my few friends besides Harry. Melody and I weren't that close, but since I had to deal with Mondays without Harry, I thought it would be good to create some closer relations with others. I had asked Melody if she wanted to go to the mall that day to shop and have a good time. She had said yes, but I'd been waiting at this bus stop for like 30 minutes. I'd texted her, but she hadn't answered yet and I figured she wouldn't, but I gave her 10 minutes more before I was going to head home. It was really cold and it had just started raining. I was holding my denim jacket above my head to keep my hair from getting wet and my non-waterproof mascara from running. The jacket quickly got soaked and wasn't to much help. I just really hoped she wouldn't stand me up although I had a feeling she would. It was foolish of me to think that someone would actually hang with me. I personally thought I was funny, kind and nice, but it didn't seem like others did.

I replied to Harry's text with a thumbs down and the eye rolling emoji. I put my phone away and strolled a little along the road. A few tears started to show up in my eyes. I felt so unwanted at times. Mostly I pushed the thoughts and sadness away, cause I had my lovely family and Harry was always there to cheer me up. Rule #16: When your bestie needs you there, you need to be there for your bestie. I wiped a tear away from my cheek and pulled out my phone to text Harry, but just as I opened iMessage a honking car made me jump and drop my phone. I quickly picked up my phone so it wouldn't drown in the puddle. I wiped my screen uselessly with my already soaked sleeve.

"What are you doing out here? It's pouring down." I heard a familiar voice yell. I turned around and saw Tom sticking his head out of the window in his car.

"I'm- Nothing really." I said and dried my phone in my shirt.

"Do you need a ride?" He questioned and pulled his head in so his hair wouldn't' get too wet.

"No th-thank you. I was just, um, about t-to text Harry to come p-pick me up." I stuttered, shivering from the cold.

"I see. Hop in. You're all soaked up, you'll catch a cold." He said. I pointed to my phone and placed it at my ear to signal that I was gonna call Harry.

"You're shaking. Just get in the car Y/N." He said and reached over to open the car door at the passengers seat. I gave in and walked over to the car.

"Are you sure you want your car all wet?" I questioned to make sure.

"Stop and get the in the fucking car. Now" He put his hands on the wheel and made me roll my eyes. I wrung my jacket to get some of the water out, but I gave up and stepped into the car as no drops of water appeared. I asked Tom if he could start the air conditioner as I was really cold and wet. He turned it on and then reached in the backseat to grab something.

"Here take this." He said handed me a hoodie. I looked at him with a questioning look, but accepted it. I put on the hoodie and squeezed myself. It was still cold due to my wet shirt under the hoodie but it was nice to wear something dry. I felt Tom's eyes on me and I suddenly got nervous.

"What?" I questioned turning my head to face him.

"Nothing." He shrugged and started the car with a smile on his lips. I felt my body heating a little bit at the sight of his smile, but then turned to face the window. The doubt of me being good enough filled my head and I held a few tears back.

"Is everything alright? You seem.. a little off." Tom asked as he started driving.

"No.. Yes- um, I mean.." I hesitated.

"It's okay, you can tell me." He said soothingly. Why he suddenly seemed so caring wondered me, but it was also kinda enchanting.

"It's just, I mean.. I feel so unwanted.." I said despairing and wanted to tell him more, but didn't as my shyness and introversion overpowered me. The fight of holding back my tears was already lost, but I didn't want to seem pathetic to Tom. At first he didn't say a word, but shortly after I felt his hand on my thigh. His touch sent a shiver through my body and a smile to my lips. I blinked trying to make the tears disappear, yet a few drops fell and alighted on my already wet pants.

"Please drive me home. Thank you." I said looking out the window. He detached his hand from my thigh, making me wish it had stayed there.

——

"This isn't the right direction. I said I wanted to go home." I said, lifting my head from leaning on the window.

"I'm taking you somewhere. You don't seem like somebody who wants to be alone right now." He kept on driving the wrong way. I wasn't sure if I should be trusting him.

"Relax, it's a nice place. You'll like it I'm sure." He said as if he could read my mind. He then made a right turn and stopped.

I looked out of the window and on my side was a field with those yellow stinky flowers. I heard Tom's door slam, he had gotten out of the car. At his side was a gravel path and trees adjacent to the path. It was still raining and I had no idea what we were doing out there. The sky was gray with a few holes in the clouds through which sun rays hit the ground and made a rainbow. It was beautiful. Tom then knocked on my window and opened the door. The smell of wet nature hit me when the door opened and I let out a sigh of relief that the yellow flowers' smell wasn't there.

"You coming?"

"It's raining." I said, starting to realize why people thought I was boring. But it was raining and I rather wanted be home in my dry bed.

"Is it? Rain doesn't hurt anybody, come on follow me I promise you it'll be fun." He said and pulled me out of the car as I tried to restrain.

"Close your eyes." He said and grabbed my shoulders to make me turn around so my back was facing him.

"And why should I trust you?" I said charily and looked back at him. He rolled his eyes and placed his hands before my eyes so almost everything turned black. I pushed his hands away from my eyes, grunted and closed them myself. He laughed and I cautiously walked forward as he pushed me. Occasionally I heard Tom snort behind me, probably because I was walking too slow. The soft ground turned harder and I my guess was that we were walking on some sort of wood. Not many words were said as we were walking, I was way too focused in not falling or tripping over something and Tom was.. yeah I don't know why he wasn't talking.

Tom finally stoped pushing me. My eyes were still closed. I heard some noises from behind me, but I couldn't get myself to ask what he was doing. He then finally broke the silence and said, "You can open your eyes now."

As I opened my eyes I firstly saw water and jumped a little as I thought I was standing on the water. Tom had placed me at the edge of some wooden pier and I was one step away from the water.

"Wow, what is this place?" I marveled as I looked at the beautiful lake surrounded by trees. The rain had died down a bit and as I was about to turn around to face Tom, he ran past me and jumped in the lake making him disappear under the water. The water splashed at me and I giggled.

"Jump in." Tom yelled as his head broke the water's surface. I smiled as he shook his wet and curly hair and ran his hand through it.

"No way. It's raining and I'm really cold." I yelled back.

"Come on! It's warmer in the water than up there." He said and sent me a pleading look.

I hesitated for a moment, but then let it go. I slowly took of Tom's sweater and started shaking even more.

"Look away you freak!" I yelled at Tom as he was still looking at me. He sent me a sulky look and turned around. I took off my clothes, but kept on my t-shirt and underwear and then jumped in. As I had jumped in I felt his hands under my arms helping me get above the surface.

"I can swim you know." I said annoyed, rubbing my eyes so I could see clearly. As I opened them I realized our faces were close. Very close. He smirked and let go of me and my head was under the water again. I wasn't ready for that. Unfair. I got above the water and rubbed my eyes again.

"Hey!"

"I thought you said you could swim." He replied with a grin.

"I can! But you let go while I wasn't prepared!" I said annoyed but with a smile. He grabbed me under the arms again, a shiver was sent through my body. He lifted me and I wrapped my legs around him. I placed my arms around his neck and our eyes locked. I let my hand play with his curls as he wrapped his arms around by back. He leaned his head into my stomach and my body started trembling. His exhalation against the soft skin on my stomach through the t-shirt made my hairs rise and gave me goosebumps. He looked up at me and let go a little so our faces were closer to each other. I took a deep breath and let go of my thoughts. He cupped my cheek with one of his hands, the other was still at my back keeping me into him. I removed the hair from my face and he pulled me in. Our lips touched. My stomach was doing weird things, things I'd never felt before. He moved his hand on my back to my ass. I pulled away from the kiss and groaned as I felt something inside me change.

"First kiss?" Tom whispered and smirked. I looked down at him and pressed my lips against his again. Yes. My first kiss.
