Chapter 8
"Your past is just a story and when you realize this it has no power over you."- Unknown
Chloe's POV:
"...."
"CHLOE! Save us."
I groan, rolling on the other side, closing my ears with the soft pillow. For the past five minutes, Emma and Melissa decided to cry over something, disturbing everyone's beauty sleep.
"MONSTER."
This is why I wanted a separate room.
I sit up straight, rubbing my eyes.
"Can't you idiots just shut up?" I glare at them with my red eyes to find them both actually crying, hugging each other. Emma was with Melissa, on her bed, pointing her finger beside me.
"I-Its t-there...."
I turn my head to where she is pointing.
At first I spot nothing but find Bella awake sitting up on the bed, looking at her sister. From the corner of my eye I catch something on the wall.
A cockroach.
A tiny cockroach.
"Aaaa..its moving towards my bed." Emma screams on top of her lungs.
"You did not just wake me up for killing this thing!" I yell back throwing my arms in the air, frustrated.
Melissa's lips quiver as she tried to snicker but fumbles.
"Hah-h, See-e I told Em-mma th-heres nothing to be sc-cared off."
Chickens..
Meanwhile, I glance at the two boys who are sleeping peacefully as if this commotion is a daily routine to them. Eric covered himself with the sheets and Aiden pressed the pillow to his ears.
I raise an eyebrow at Melissa's dumb act.
I sighed tiredly.
I'll just kill that thing and go back to sleep. There is still half an hour more left until it's time for breakfast.
The moment I turn towards it, Bella finally notices the brown insect and catches it with her bare hands.
"BELLLAAA." Both the girls behind me screech like a car's tire drifting on a slippery road.
I watch in shock, gaping as the little girl holds the cockroach by its antenna.
The inset wriggled under her grasp making Bella's hand tremble.
Her eyebrows crease and she yanks it behind on Aiden's bed. The insect disappears into his covers. She scrunches her nose in disgust.
My eyebrows shoot up to my hairline in amusement.
Melissa shudders at the scene while Emma sits like an empty soul staring ahead. "My sister has to take a bath with the holy water now..."
I guess everything sorted out. I glance at the watch and decided to head to wash room to get a good warm shower.
I push my covers, getting up. Taking my pair of clothes I head to the restroom, opposite to the bedroom.
After a quick bath, I make my way towards the hall for breakfast.
I glance around finding fewer people than usual and walk towards the counter that is filled with few nurses and patients waiting in the queue for food.
"Morning Chloe." I look behind my shoulders to see him.
My heart sky rockets at the sight of him. Xavier stands, smiling down at me in his normal state. I gulp looking ahead.
"M-morning."
Anxiety is something I never understood until this day. I waited, waited and waited, cursing at the line to move ahead so that I can take my breakfast and run away from Xavier. I could feel him stand close by, his stare burning into the back of my head.
Few more painful seconds pass till my turn arrives and I quickly take my tray before rushing into the other direction. I spot Eric sitting with Aiden and head to them, trying to breathe normally.
"Why can't my mornings be any more peaceful, where I wake up to the sound of bird's not lunatic girls or insects?" Aiden runs a hand in his hair.
I laugh lightly, taking a seat next to Eric who is busy eating. "Good morning guys."
"Good morning Chloe."
"There is no good in the morning for me" Aiden sighs, as I chuckle at his behavior.
Poor guy must have woken up only to meet a pretty insect greeting him. A part of me was sad that I didn't get to see that scene.
The breakfast is simple with bread, butter and jam along with a boiled egg. Soon after, the rest of the team joins us on the table as we all sat in silence, enjoying the food.
Once we were done with the food all of us stood in one of the corridors where I was being told about my next chores for the day.
"Chloe, you will give some hand in the laundry and help with watching people on the ground during the noon." I nod at Melissa who glances down at a small paper in her hand.
She assigns everyone else the work and we all part our ways heading to do the given chores.
Of course I stand confused in one of the hallways.
Which way was the laundry..?
I walk towards one of the corridor only to be welcomed by more rooms running in every direction.
This place is a freaking maze.
"Oh hey-"
I jump at the sound from behind me only to freeze right away. Xavier.
Great. He is everywhere now.
His oceanic eyes pierce into mine. I stand there lost in those oddly satisfying eyes staring back at me. I look away, clearing my throat.
"Hey...c-can you point me the direction towards laundry?"
I shift on my feet uncomfortably and slowly look up to find him scanning my face.
He blinks and shoots me a one of his killer smiles.
"Go straight then take two left turns. There will be a room labeled as laundry."
If I get another cardiac arrest, it is his fault.
"Thanks." I mumble before heading towards my destination. As Xavier pointed, I come across a room named as 'Laundry'.
I place my hand on the knob, twisting it and open the door.
The wooden door opens with a small creak, I push it further to walk inside.
I step into the huge room that ran horizontally long with machines, piles of clothes, baskets and much more. A strong scent of soaps, washing powders hits my nostrils.
There are two ladies dressed in the staff uniform, busy in their work. One of them notices me and smiles.
"Hey, Mel told you will be helping us today. I'm Olivia and this is Floral, if you need anything please do ask us. Floral will show you your work."
I nod at her and follow the blond woman to a washing machine. She shows me the amount of powder to be added, rest of the things went easy using a machine.
After almost two hours of working with the silent ladies, they tag along with me outside the building. I notice it's the back-side door leading to a small backyard filled with clothes hung up for drying.
It takes about complete ten minutes hanging up the washed clothes on the ropes to dry and taking down the dried ones.
"Thanks for the help Chloe." Olivia bids me as I walk outside the laundry room before bidding them back.
I stretch my arms.
That's a hell of a job even though most of it was simply done by the machine.
I make my way towards the cafeteria first then follow few hallways before finally finding towards the main door.
I walk outside and sigh in relief.
Last chore left.
The sun is right above my head, its almost noon. I glance around wondering if others made it before me but I saw no one around except for Aiden far away monitoring the members of the hospital.
He notices me and waves a hand, asking to join him.
The wind blows, making my hair a larger mess than it already was after all the work. I recall all the yesterday's experiences I had in the same ground.
Aiden walks up to me, seeing that I gave up and sat on the ground.
I'm tired and hungry.
"Cheater, you made me walk all the way back here.."
I smile sheepishly at him, turning the tables in the game he plotted. I stretch myself and relax breathing the fresh air.
A hand grabs my arm, startling me. I glance up, alert to find Aiden, scowling at me.
He pulls me back up, making me groan at him.
Aiden gives me a look of get-back-to-work.
"But I just finished doing laundry-" I was cut off by a scream behind A. He tensed up and ran in other direction to one of the patients, who attempted to climb up a tree.
Basically, failed and got hurt.
I sigh, walking in other direction. Minutes later Emma and Melissa arrive on the ground.
I take small steps, eyeing every person closely now that I finally got a chance too.
My heart clenches to see few innocent children being the victim of mental disabilities as they play with the grass next to their respective nurse.
My thoughts wander to Xavier and I take a quick glance over the field failing to find him. I notice a vacant chair and stalk towards it in need of rest.
I exhale loudly once I crash on the marble chair, closing my eyes shut feeling relaxed.
My feet hurt from all the work-walk no rest.
The ground is huge, patrolling these people is not an easy task. I don't really recall when I drifted into eerie darkness.
---
I look around to find myself in the same forest.
This time the only difference was that it is autumn, making the trees appear red, orange and yellow.
I lazily wander around, scanning the area only to be surrounded by more colorful woods.
"..."
"..ake-"
Voices
I hear nothing but incoherent words ringing inside my head
.A wild headache attacks me, making the noises numb. I clutch my ears and grit my teeth, wishing for the pain to disappear.
My jaw was clenched yet the pain striking in my head was superior. I fltl like I was blanking out in my own dream.
Darkness invaded my sight and my eyes shut down, drowning in submission to the pain.
Minutes later, my eyelids flutter open.
My vision adjusts itself in front of a huge tree. I look around to halt when I spot a silhouette of a man. His face just comes out blurry.
I blink vividly trying to catch a glimpse of him but fail.
The unknown man points his index towards this one particular tree. I frown in confusion.
"rem....."
"Rememb-"
What happens next will forever remain a mystery as my headache returns back making me stumble into darkness. I squeeze my eyes shut trying to wake up. All I managed to hear was 'remember'
"Get up lazy ass."
I jolt awake in cold sweat, snapping at the sound. My breathing is raged as I turn to find Emma furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.
"You okay..?" She asks in concern as I bob my head, nodding at her. She smiles, gesturing me to others, who stood waiting by the Asylum's gate.
"It lunch time lets go."
