Chapter 5
"Sometimes the painful endings bring the best new beginnings."- Shoe Ross
Chloe's POV:
Have you ever felt too overwhelmed or warmth spreading inside you just by seeing something beautiful?
I tried hard, really hard not to act childish and sit properly on the leather seat and failed miserably.
I keep bouncing on the seat without even realizing as I scan the outside world.
My jaw already dropped down, high-fived the ground below me minutes back. Maybe right after the car's engine roared to life and Rachel started driving into nothing but astonishing lavish forests.
The drive is almost about more than an hour from Marley's town to Brooklyn's town to the asylum.
I lost the count of time, unable to move my gaze from the surroundings. It's a long peaceful drive on a straight road passing dozens of trees through the forest.
It is shady as the trees cover the daylight by their large leaves.
"Hold your breath Chloe, the view is about to get even more interesting." Her voice chirps. My excitement didn't go unnoticed by the lady who kept chuckling at my awe-struck face.
I cock my head to the side grinning broadly as the jeeps races against the wind, making my hair float.
The woods around us start to disappear, the sun peeks out of the clouds, making the sunlight blur my vision for a second.
I shut my eyes at the sudden impact and slowly squint them open adjusting to the light.
My heart skips a beat and my breath gets caught up in my throat.
There was nothing but vast land with greenery covered as far as my eyes could manage to see along with colossal mountains in the background. The clouds floating in the perfect blue sky were adding a finishing touch to the nature's beauty.
A loud gasp escapes my dry lips.
I didn't want to blink instead consume everything I can see, burning the magnificent sight at back of my head. I grip the side of the door nearly jumping off my seat in excitement.
The black jeep glistens under the sun rays during the noon, as it speeds nearing one of the mountains. I squeal like a kid, losing my previous try-to-act-adult demeanor.
"ITS HUGEEE."
Before I could say a word a loud rattling sound resonates in the air, a bit distant but clear enough to make out.
The source of that sound comes from the mountains.
It startles me and my head creases in confusion at the sound. I look Rachel and her smile widens as she takes a quick glance at me and focuses on the road.
"Wait for it."
Right then comes out a silver notch of the vehicle followed by a long line of cabins attached to it. The silver surface of its clear body makes it gleam under the day light.
It comes out of a small tunnel made through the mountain and disappears into another tunnel in a while.
"These towns have trains..." I whisper breathless and Rachel hums in response.
My jaw hits the cars floor for the seventh time, leaving me utterly speechless.
"It's a bullet train." She cheers merrily.
The wide road turns further away from the densely covered mountains to other path, moving us away from its sight.
I glance at her. I know it's a train but I heard this line before.
Out of nowhere my ears start to ring and an earth shattering headache crashes into me.
"..."
I guess Rachel is speaking but I didn't manage to catch it. My vision gets blurry, my hands move up to cover my ears that are drumming in an awful pain. My head starts to spin until I feel nothing around me.
*flashback*
"It's so huge. I want a ride in it too!" A girly voice wails in an attempt to direct attention. Crossing her arms, she swings her legs in annoyance inside a small car.
"One day honey, I promise you will be riding in it." A male speaks, sitting ahead on the driver's seat.
"Bu-but we never go outside for trips except for car rides once a while." She gestures around the car to proof her point.
"If I don't take you, it's not like you won't in near future. I'm sure you will try to sneak out." He states in a way to lighten up her mood.
"Yesh, watch me! I'll sneak into that caterpillar type twain." The girl chirps, earning more laughs from an elderly voice.
*Present*
I blink vividly, the tears I didn't know were streaming down. I can now hear the soft wind rushing past my ears in a large swoosh.
I remove my hands that were covering the ears. The tears dry instantly by the strong wind.
I could still feel the heat over my ears that slowly starts to cool down due to the strong wind.
"Chloe? What's wrong, you okay?" Rachel keeps glancing worriedly towards me then back to the road a few times.
I run a hand in my hair, making my ponytail more loose.
Was that some sort of hallucination or segments of my memory..?
I decide maybe it's the former one, shrugging off Rachel's queries.
Rest of the ride goes in re-thinking about the weird voices I recalled that were so very familiar.
Few minutes pass and structures of bulky buildings come into the view that stood far from us. I look around the area that we are driving.
A small post on the side of the road passes pointing ahead by an arrow stating 'Brooklyn's Town'.
Oddly Rachel doesn't take that side of the road and passes it, driving further ahead. I wait patiently.
We once again pass through woods but it lasted barely for five minutes.
As the jeep comes out from the woods, my gaze lands on the gigantic building. It looked like a mansion built years ago. It stood all mighty underneath the sun with nothing but land surrounding it.
"Here we are", she whispers softly driving further towards the hospital.
My heart starts to beat faster and my palms get sweaty.
It is the Mental Asylum.
The asylum is a huge structure just like any other mansion. It was old and grey with at least seven to eight floors tall. The building ran horizontally long.
What catches my attention is the area around the asylum covered with nearly ten or twelve-feet fence surrounding it entirely.
From the corner of my eye, few meters apart from the gate, I catch an old rusty truck. It looks like it hasn't been used for ages.
I glance away to stare at the mental asylum.
Rachel slows down her jeep to a crawl and pulls inside the entrance gate. The two guards standing by the gate wish her and she drives further inside before greeting them.
The gate we can came through closes behind us.
We pass a small cabin that must be for the security guards. I scan around to see a small building that looked like a clinic or a office. It looked new, one can tell just by looking at it.
Behind it stood the Asylum that looked ten times larger than before.
She parks near the new building and we both hop out of the jeep together. I quickly slip my only backpack from the backseat.
"Follow me dear." With that she walks inside the office,I follow her obediently. I push the door open and halt at the entrance by seeing it was indeed a clean office with shelves covering the walls up to the ceiling.
This place looked like a library more than a office. There were four wooden desks in the middle.
Rachel is speaking to an old man wearing a white coat who hums at her before glancing to me. He didn't look too friendly in my opinion. He walks to me not changing his bored expression. He's an old, the white beard gave away the clue.
"Welcome." He says gruffly and walking past me.
"Uh..thank you old-I-I me-ean Dr..." I voice trails off.
"Dr Donald", Rachel corrects. I turn to her to give a grateful smile.
"Sorry, Dr. Dona-"
But looks like he wasn't even interested in hearing my response since he left.
I sigh. Is it my lack of communication?
A hand presses my shoulder and I turn to it see Rachel smiling.
"Don't worry, he's just busy and doesn't like to do much talking but he's the superior here." She shrugs.
Oh the man is grumpy indeed. I nod at her agreeing on it.
A voice comes from one of the desks behind me, more like a huge yawn. I catch a glimpse of maroon haired lady over Rachel's shoulder.
"Who is *yawn* she *yawn* Rachel?" A sleepy tone speaks.
She is just a young lady like Rachel with maroon messy hair and dark green eyes behind her pink glass frame.
She looks at me before grinning ear to ear. I crack a weird smile before waving a hello at her. She quickly walks up to us.
Rachel rolls her eyes. She gestures towards the grinning lady,
"This is Trinity and she works as a doctor on the second floor. The old man you met earlier is Dr Donald, who is in charge of other upper floors and I work on the first and second floor along with her."
"Oh please, call me Trinity, no need of adding formalities to it. You must be Chloe, nice to meet you!" She extends her hand which I gladly take, smiling at her.
"Good to meet you too, Trinity."
Her eyes widen before she runs towards her desk. For a second I think I said something wrong.
"I slept again. I need to finish my paperwork." She screams on her way over to the desk that is piled up with papers beside her computer.
I knew sleep cannot be defeated.
Rachel gestures me to follow her outside.
We start heading towards the main building which is a minute walk from this new one. The hospital does look scary. Turning around the corner, we head towards the entrance gate.
Rachel halts in her track.
My gaze follows to where she is staring. A fat woman in a nurse uniform seems to be screaming at a skinny adult who kept chewing the hem of his collar. The once blue shirt is smeared with tomato sauce, I assume, all over him and the trousers.
"Sister, wait!" Rachel screams running over to the chaos.
I glance at them. The adult was now crying on the ground and an angry nurse who kept huffing.
Apart from this commotion my gaze lingers around the huge ground filled with dozens of patients each with their mental disorders and illness.
The place consists of people varying with different age, even few small kids ran across the lovely garden guarded by their respective nurses.
The ground was huge, running at least for one or two miles long coming to a stop by ten feet fence.
I wonder if it is electrified.
The ground is built neatly, surrounded by trees, shrubs with flowers and along with marble chairs for two.
This must be the place everyone hangs around. It almost looks like a park.
I take a small glimpse around few patients who were doing odd stuff like crawling, running like maidens, hanging on trees, crying, screaming, lying on the ground.
I hope you get the point.
Few are on wheel chairs accompanied with their nurse. I am stunned to see so many people around and in a complete awe at the beautiful ground.
Emma's POV:
I slowly comb Bella's soft blonde hair.
I wished I had hair like my eleven year old sister.
After a few minutes she is set with an adorable looking fish plate. I sigh in content of my art.
"Alright Bee, let's get back to our duty now." She gets up along with me clutching the side of my blue knee-gown, our uniform.
I smile at her obedience.
"fofo..fofo-fo."
Her tiny pleas follow my words. She's hungry.
Bella tilts her head in different directions glancing everywhere else but me as she spoke.
I pat her head softly. "Time for fofo." My stomach grumbles to agree with her.
Skipping breakfast was bad idea. But the food didn't have any taste...
I smack myself mentally for being ungrateful and lead the way for Bella, who trails behind me.
Duty can wait, first comes tummies.
I walk calmly passing every member of the house and greeting the nurses. My tiny paper star that was pinned on my left side of the chest sparkled due to its golden glitter that I added.
I'm the queen of Fashion around here, adding color to these people's colorless world.
We pass a woman, Margot, who seems to be in a serious cat fight with the other lady, Lisa.
I saw them from the corner of my eye, switching on my monitor alarm.
Both the women are supposed to be with their nurse but here they are trying to slap each other unsuccessfully as sway their hands in mid air close to each other's face.
Of course, their eyes tightly shut.
I growl at them. "Stop, right now!"
They immediately snap their heads at me, stopping their commotion on hearing my commanding voice.
One of them starred wide-eyed getting caught by the monitor.
"You shouldn't hit each other like that!" The other lady bobs her head trying to be a good girl. Other one looks away tilting her head before scratching her messy hair.
Don't mess your hair...
I've to fix them. But Bella doesn't think the same and pulls my gown indicating she's hungry and our mission of lunch.
I sigh and quickly look around to find two nurses walking around.
I politely ask them yelling across the ground if they could handle the patients. One of them gives me thumbs up before heading this way.
Damn I need my lunch right now.
I pull Bella quickly rushing towards the entrance of the building only to find the most peculiar sight few meters away from me.
A young girl with hazel hair is dressed up in sweater and jeans, as a civilian, playing around with Xavier. My mouth slightly hangs open upon seeing them.
She doesn't look like a family member judging by the way she ends up making him cry within minutes. Melissa is already standing beside her.
She will handle, I suppose.
I shake my head at them and start walking, but, God again.
This time I stop to witness someone fall from the huge tree beside her and Mel. Next thing I know the new girl does something I couldn't comprehend.
She takes out her shoe throwing at the poor person right on their face. The one attacked looks familia-
AIDEN.
His back is facing towards me, but I saw him wince in pain before crouching to hold his..nose?
Melissa acts as a total jerk, laughing at the love of my life. I fume in anger rushing towards them, particularly to the one who's interrupting the peace of this place and my lunch time.
Bella trails behind me as I walk hastily to them holding her hand in mine.
Who is she!?
