Chapter 18
"An idiot with a plan can beat a genius without a plan"-Unknown.
Melissa's POV:
A ray of hope spikes in my heart.
If there is anyone who can understand and help us, it's Rachel or Trinity. Chloe's face pales at the sight of Trinity.
Xavier is the first one to react, he takes a step forward but Chloe beats him. She jolts up from the bed standing in front of her.
"Trinity I wan-"
The doctor shakes her head in disapproval and quickly steps inside the room, shutting the door behind her. I furrow my eyebrows at her.
Chloe starts rambling broken phrases unable to put the puzzle and explain this mess.
I roll my eyes at her, "We got a note from a weird crazy stalker, it says that she will be back for Chloe by second day, dragging her to God knows where and if Chloe tries to protest, one of us will end up dead."
I sigh in relief after blurting out everything in a short summary. Chloe turns and gives me a glare and I shrug at her casually.
'I was helping' I mouth at her and she scowls at me. Rude.
"Dr.Trinity please help us.." Emma pleads and the doctor looks at her. She opens her mouth but closes it. Aiden gets up, nearing the doctor, "We want to escape from here."
Trinity gapes at us, she looks at each of us. "You guys are crazy, the front gate has tight security. How-"
"Good point, you can help us luring them away, or we can take a ride in your car." Xavier suggests, Emma and Aiden nod their heads looking at Trinity with hope.
Chloe stills, not speaking or uttering any word. I frown at her sudden change in behavior.
Trinity looks down at her feet, massaging the brink of her nose. She glances up at Chloe and all of us with determination.
"We will escape from here during evening within next two days. I can handle the guards at the gates, it will be easier if we use a car and drive away." Chloe finally looks at her surprised.
"Perfect, but where do we go after-"Chloe shuts Aiden instantly.
She walks up to Trinity, "Lets discuss the details together, I'll let everyone know about it." Trinity nods at her firmly. Chloe gestures her towards the door and they both step out.
I stare at the door, feeling a bit distant. Chloe didn't try involving us in the plan but then again she always has her reasons.
The door halts and Chloe peeks inside the room. All of us look at her in confusion.
"Don't say a word about this to anyone. I'll let you all know about the plan by tomorrow morning. Sleep tight." She whispers and smiles softly.
"Sure." I call after she closes the door shut.
---
I cross my legs sitting on the marble bench in the ground. There is a usual crowd of patients after breakfast.
I sigh, dangling my feet lazily, back and forth. It's already morning and Chloe still hasn't talked about the plan to me.
Aiden, Emma got their parts to play. I tried enquiring them secretly but they brushed me off telling it's meant to be a secret.
I decided Emma lost her last brain cells when I found her spending time in the laundry room, washing clothes so early in the morning. Well, everyone does chores during the day normally, but Emma always hated it.
I thought she was suppose to help us with the plan but there she was, hugging the laundry clothes and checking each of them. Aiden vanished into thin air after the breakfast along with Chloe.
I huff, looking at the clear sky in annoyance.
"Sorry for the wait Mel." I snap my head to find Chloe standing beside Xavier.
I jump on my feet, brushing off my gown.
"Finally, now tell me. I can't wait any longer."
I realized Chloe's face was pale. Her eyes were dull with dark eye bags. This entire thing has taken a good stroll on the young girl.
She gestures us to gather around us. "Listen to me closely." She licks her lips eyeing us sternly and I nod at her unsure.
Xavier leans beside me as Chloe starts, softly whispering the plan.
"I need you to steal the keys that belong to old truck outside the asylum from the security cabin."
I gawk at her and blink twice if she is toying with us. Xavier opens to say something but closes his mouth.
Why do we need a truck? Did Trinity's car break down?
Confusion was painted on both of our faces and she gets our question.
"I can't tell you anything yet."- She glances behind her shoulder, and grabs my hand, pressing it softly- "It is up to you guys, please.." Her voice trails off into a desperate pleading tone. Her brown orbs search my eyes and took in Xavier, waiting for us.
"I won't let you down." I did say that but I really have no clue on how do we steal that key.
"Leave it to us, Chloe." Xavier adds.
Chloe exhales in relief, closing her eyelids. A thought occurs in me, "Chloe, shouldn't we discuss this with A and Emma?"
She snaps her eyes open, an unreadable emotion flows in them. "Whatever you do, do not utter a word about anything to anyone."
I frown at her emphasize of 'do not' but the guy standing beside beats me to it. "Why?"
Chloe once again glances around, a weird habit she's getting used to, as if she is hiding things from someone particular. She leans closer to us and her face turns cold.
"There is someone in the asylum helping the killer."
A gasp escapes me and I quickly slap my hand over my unstoppable mouth. Xavier stuns, his shoulders tensing and a shudder passes me.
Puzzles start to arrange in my head as to why Aiden and Emma avoided telling me what they're up to, acting strangely.
Chloe gave us one last look filled with warning and hope before she disappears towards the building.
Xavier and I slowly make our way towards the corner of the asylum and peek at the scene. The small security room stood next to the white office. This particular wooden cabin stood in between the main gates of the asylum and the office, surrounded by security cameras.
I groan as I spot two guards standing on the opposite sides of the gate. We stop a few feet away from them and our target, cabin.
We need a distraction but things are easier said than done.
I glance hopelessly at Xavier over my shoulder. I frown seeing a smirk playing across his features and he looks at me with his calculative eyes. I cock an eyebrow at him if he already as has an idea.
---
Minutes later, here we are on our way to steal the key. I kept praying that the plan goes smoothly as Xavier stated.
I cower behind the bushes, beside the office making sure my frame is hidden. The wooden cabin stood just mere feet apart from me. Only if I could walk up to the guards and politely ask for keys, but the world is just a cruel place.
I clench my sweaty fist and squint my eyes as the bright daylight blinds my vision. I move the leaves of the bush, hiding me and peek at Xavier.
He confidently walks in long strides towards the two guards. Both of them turn their attention to Xavier. I could faintly hear their voices all the way behind the green bushes.
My hearts starts to pound faster and I try to stay as calm as possible.
"Hey man, you're not allowed to be here. Go back inside." One of the guards yells at him. I stare at Xavier's back and bite my lip nervously in fear of getting caught and failing Chloe.
"Where is your nurse?" Other man asks, stepping closer to Xavier. The moment both of them near Xavier, he starts wailing loudly. He covers his eyes with his fist, adding a dramatic appearance.
He begins sobbing like a feeble child and the guard nearest to the cabin moves towards him.
"Look what you did, he is crying!" He shrieks at his partner who scowls at him but looks at mess created helplessly.
This gave Xavier boost and he sits down on the ground throwing a tantrum. My heart jolts as the plan starts to work.
Adrenaline pumps in my blood and I slowly get up, moving towards the security cabin behind the bushes. A loud snap echoes under my feet. I look down in terror to find that I stepped on a twig.
"Get a nurse, quick!"
"You go get one, I'll handle this dude."
A great relief passes me as the sound goes unnoticed by them. I need to hurry, Xavier bought enough time for me. Its time I play my cards.
I peek from behind a tree to find one of the guards gone and the other stroking Xavier's head, crouching beside him, facing his back at me.
I lick my dry lips and tip toe quietly towards the cabin. I walk right behind the guard who was crouched near Xavier. I didn't realize that I stopped breathing trying to be as quiet as possible.
"Hey there, don't cry." The guard is pretty distracted and I took this as my golden chance.
I sneak up towards the cabin. My throat dries and sweat drips from my forehead. The security cabin isn't huge, it's barely inches taller than my own height.
I reach for the knob, twisting it softly and it opens with a click.
I thanked god that the door didn't possess any creaky sounds and step inside the congested area. My eyes hungrily scan the cabin. Different items were scattered over the small desk inside the room.
My gaze lands on a small holder hung on the wall beside me.
Keys.
I move inside, my hands start to tremble as I brush my fingers over dozens of keys.
Dang it. I didn't even ask how the key looks.
I start to lose my cool getting anxious by each second.
Do something Mel!
I eye each key and find that most of them are labeled with dorm numbers, others clearly didn't look anything close to vehicles key.
My gaze lands on two old rusty keys. That truck outside the asylum is years old but still works mysteriously. The key has to be old fashioned as well.
I grit my teeth and grab the similar looking keys, unable to decide which one is the right key. One of them will do the job without a doubt. I thrash the items in my side pocket.
I suck air through my teeth and peek outside to find Xavier laughing with the guard who kept ushering some words to him.
I close the door and move sideways towards the bushes with my front facing the guard.
Suddenly his head snaps at me and he narrows his black eyes at me. "Hey you, stop right there."
My breath hitches and I freeze on my spot. Xavier looks at me over the guard's shoulder and stuns.
No no no..
"What are you doing here?" He narrows his intense gaze at me. My lips quiver. I open my mouth but Xavier jumps, saving me from this misery.
"Meliiii, you found mee!" He squeals in his childish tone and the guard looks back and forth at the two of us.
Way to go.
"Y-yeah. Found you finally." My voice booms with firm confidence playing along with him, trying to fool the guard. He observes us closely and his face beams, giving me a tight lipped smile.
"Oh I get it, you're friend was lost." He gestures at Xavier nodding his head.
I mentally scream in relief.
I grin widely at the security officer nodding at him and quickly dash towards Xavier.
"Sorry to bother you boss."
I tug Xavier's arm and he gets back on his feet. I lock our arms and lead us further away from the danger zone.
"Thank you mister." Xavier shouts over his shoulder earning a chuckle from the guy behind us.
Fromt the corner of my eye, I spot the other guard rushing towards us, who halts seeing me but I drag Xavier, ignoring him and disappear around the corner.
We both quietly walk further ahead on the ground, away from the crowd of people. My hearts drums in my chest and my breathing starts to grow normal.
We both reach a clear spot next to the trees and I let go of his arm.
"That was insane!" A squeal leaves me.
Xavier sighs loudly, running a hand in his hair. He glances at me, his eyes twinkled. "Did you get it?"
I smirk at him and dig for the keys in my pocket, clutching them. I dangle the two stolen items in front of his face which beams as he takes in the item.
"Good job mate."
I poke at his arm, "Thanks to your over acting, everything went smooth like butter."
He places a hand at his chest trying to act hurt. "That was the best I ever did."
I smile, stretching my arms. " Let's just hope didn't steal a wrong key." Xavier hums and shakes his head.
"Chill, I'm pretty sure one of these two is the key Chloe wanted. I mean look at them."
He does have a point. The keys were really old.
Xavier started walking towards the asylum and I silently followed behind him praying everything goes well.
We did it Chloe, hope things go easy for rest of you guys.
