Chapter 10
"Things will end but memories will last forever"-Unknown.
Chloe's POV:
Everything happened so quickly I didn't have any time to register.
I can't recall or understand why Aiden tensed up seeing a blood stained cloth till he pinned me to the wall, hitting his fist to the wall beside my face.
My entire frame froze in its place, color draining from my face as I stare at the conflicting orbs.
"A-Aiden."
Another blow.
I flinch at the impact he sends and receives from damaging the wall next to me. I shudder inwardly imagining my face receiving that punch.
What did I get myself into?
If I try to speak, he will send another blow towards the wall or possibly right at my face.
My thoughts were racing against each other as I spot Emma behind Aiden, over his broad shoulders.
Our gazes clash and my eyes scream for help. She stares back alert and surprised.
Emma quickly pulls Aiden away from me. I gasp loudly trying to ease my breathing.
I triggered something I shouldn't have.
Aiden is a cool guy, this is something I realized within a few days. He would never act the way he did unless provoked or triggered.
Then again, I did nothing that would provoke something physical like this.
I'm pretty sure I am missing a piece of puzzle.
I glance at Emma who signals me to move away before I mouth a 'thanks' and take off like a scared soldier fleeing from a battle ground.
I run away, trying to breathe normally. My heart was thundering inside my chest.
I need to find Melissa and ask her about Aiden.
If I don't learn about the past my friends have been through, I'll never be able to either help or support them in anyway.
I make my way towards the gates of the asylum. I push open the glass door and the warm breeze hits me.
I scan around to find Melissa sitting alone on one of the bench. I furrow my eyebrows as I approach her slowly.
She looks tensed up just like Aiden was seconds back.
I gulp visibly. Was it the blood that triggered them?
Melissa senses me as she looks up, her worry ceased face clearing and a small grin spreading her features.
I sigh relieved walking to her and take a seat beside her.
"I'm sorry, I r-really don't k-know but-" My face retorts into fresh guilt as I try not to break into tears- " I'm s-sorry for what I triggered within you and Aiden.."
At first she frowns, confused.
My voice came out as a weak whisper as Melissa's confused face stretches into panicked one hearing Aiden's name.
She jumps to her feet but I catch her wrist before she can run away.
"Emma is with him." I mumble softly.
Her tensed shoulders relax at the mention of Emma being with her brother. She sits beside me slightly uncomfortable.
"It isn't your fault Chloe. You don't even know anything to apologi-"
"But-"
"Chloe listen."
She turns to face me. My eyes were teary from everything that happened.
She breathes sharply, licking her dry lips. "I will tell you everything, listen closely..please."
Her words come out bold but turn to a whisper at the end. I nod my head at her slowly.
"Aiden and I both suffer disorders but my brother got hit by PTSD and Split Personality just like Xavier, worse than me."
I hold her hand in mine, trying to sooth her. She sighs before she continues.
"Our f-father was a serial killer. He brought few people randomly to our home over many years. He tortured them in the basement in front of us and mom before killing them. Mom gave up on her life unable to bear the pain but Aiden stood strong as a wall protecting me every night."
"We weren't aware of his acts for a year but got wrapped up in that mess once we found out. He threatened to kill mom or us if we told it to anyone."
She chokes on her tears that start streaming down as she talks. A pang of pain spreads in my chest as I watch her silent tears. I notice the venom she uses while talking about her father.
"He asked Aiden to kill the people he brought in the basement or clean up the mess created. If Aiden denied he would torture both of us. One night, he got some lady to the basement and killed her off like usual but later he started to e-eat from her d-dead body."
I breathe sharply as I watch her struggling to speak. I shake my head at her. "Stop. You don't need to say an-"
"You need to know Chloe." She cuts me off, brushing away her tears and clearing her throat.
Melissa looks at me maintaining a strong composure as she spoke boldly this time.
"He committed cannibalism due to the drug called Trxyonate that was shot into him. Aiden took the chance and finished him off, trying to protect both of us. If he hadn't done it, we could have been the next victims of that monster."
She gazes up at the sky above us, a small smile tugs her lips.
I frown at the retaliation of the drug I searched about.
"Hours later police arrived, catching both of us. Luckily, being under aged children, we got away from the whole scenario and the crime that was done as a self defense. Later it was approved by the authorities that if Aiden hadn't finished him off, he would have attacked us before eventually dying because of the toxic drug."
Melissa looks at me as my eyes widen.
She smiles proudly at her brother's bravery. I smack myself mentally for making the two of them relive their horrible past memories.
"Though we were moved to an orphanage, our minds were too black and blank to cope up with the world around us. So then, we were shifted to this asylum and have been living here for almost four years. Aiden and I improved a lot with our conditions over these years. This is a place where we are accepted without a question."
I shake my head looking down as a stray of tear slips my eyelids painting my face with it.
I quickly wipe it away.
Everyone here does have a back story that my brain cannot comprehend or begin to imagine. They all fight the demons and strive to live their lives, trying to change and fit.
I may have a past I cannot remember yet but I got a feeling it's not something to hold onto or wait for it to come running back to me.
I need to learn from people around me, to walk ahead not turning back.
It's the past, it is inseparable from us and will be with us no matter where we head in life. Though the choice of life lies in our hands and actions done in the present.
"I'm sorry..you have been through so muc-"
"It is all good Chloe. You owed one after telling your story." I glance up at her before looking away nodding.
I didn't have a story to tell.
"What about Emma?"
Melissa lets out a laugh, her eyes squinting as she looks at me with amusement.
"Emma is not a psycho or a mental kid, she is naturally weird and a free sticker with Bella."
I raise an eyebrow at her not getting the hint. Her smile only widens showing her prefect white teeth.
Mel rolls her eyes at me as I stare at her only with more confusion.
"Bella is mentally disabled by birth but that didn't falter their sisterhood bond. Emma has always been close to Bella especially after the death of their mother during the Hilton's town massacre. Her step mom dropped Bella here first, later within a day Emma arrived."
These people suffered that night just like me.
I open my mouth to speak but close, frowning.
"Emma suffered disorders?"
Melissa smiles and shakes her head.
"You won't believe me."
"Try me." I grin making her smile sheepishly.
"Emma acted like she has gone totally crazy without Bella beside her. She ended up nearly burning down the house on purpose to get back to her sister. Next day, Emma arrived to this asylum."
My eyebrows shoot up to the hairline.
Emma and Bella were always close as far as I noticed but this amount closeness wasn't expected by me.
She decided to fake out being mental just to unite with her sister, takes some guts to do that.
I suddenly feel envious of all the love and sibling bonds these four share. My thoughts wander off to my unknown family and I shake them off.
I hop of the chair, stretching my arms. I glance over my shoulder to see Melissa watching me with hawk-like eyes, completely aware of my next words.
"Let's go back to do laundry."
She gets ready to walk off in different direction but I hold her back, pulling her with me back to the asylum.
"Oh come on, I just told you two hours movie, cut me some slack."
"No."
She keeps complaining all the way back inside. We pass by the stair case, making me eye them suspiciously.
Every time someone tells you not to do something and you try it anyways, I guess it is a natural feeling.
I look behind to see Melissa rambling her complains. I lick my dry lips as I turn around at her.
"Mel, can you go ahead. I'll be back in a sec. Just need to use the washroom."
"Sure sure, take your sweet time." A grin spreads on her face.
I know for a fact she already made up her mind to run away as soon as she loses me but I got other plans for the time being.
With one last farewell, we both part our ways.
I head back towards the staircase trying not to look suspicious. A nurse passes by me nearly giving me a heart attack.
I sigh as I look up and take my first step, then the other. Just like that I don't know how many times I repeated the action till I reached the third floor.
The staircase here got dirtier, dust coating on it everywhere over the railings. I have my doubts if any of the staff even walks up here to clean the area.
I remember being told that only Dr.Donald works up here on the patients.
I'm sure he isn't here at the present moment.
Oddly the place is darker than the first two floors and more silent.
I bet I can hear the pin drop if I throw one right now.
I walk slowly further into the old rusty corridors leading into different ways. This place of the asylum looks more like a mansion's dungeon giving me a chilling vibe.
It isn't renovated like the first two floors either, having worn out furniture lying on the carpet flooring with torn wallpapers everywhere.
The air around is suffocating me and I mentally start to regret my choice of breaking the rules.
I turn around, deciding to walk back until I hear a loud rattling of bars or chains resonating in the thick air.
I halt on my track, a shiver running down my spine making me shudder.
Before I register anything more sounds echoes throughout the corridors. I narrow my eyes but they only grow wide in horror.
There are bars just like the ones you find in police station.
There are metal bars for each room or room like prison, one after another running all along the corridor.
I shudder and gulp loudly.
It is so dark in here that I failed to see the dark bars camouflaged by the darkness of the atmosphere even though there is nothing but sunlight right outside this building.
I spot something moving towards my left. I turn my head slowly in its direction and the air is knocked out of my lungs.
My knees felt wobbly out of nowhere.
A silhouette stood few steps away behind the bar, with silver chains tied to its all the fours. The chains hit each other, creating a rattling noise.
The silhouette grew larger as it kept walking towards me, near the bars.
The only thing separating us, are the thick metal bars.
---
Rules are rules. You break them, you pay for them.
