Chapter 1

"Did you know, the longest time a person has been in a coma is 37 years.." - Unknown

Third person POV:

In the large room, the doctors surrounded the young patient who responds after two years, fighting to surface the reality. The machines beep loud and clear in the room. The person was shifted to ECG, an emergency arrived right after the body responded.

"Quick, check the operators and ECG. Increase the supply of oxygen to patient C-236." A pitched voice commands.

"Her heart rate is slowing down."

The tension in the air gets intense as the patient that was barely awake minutes ago ended up battling for life.

The ECG machine shows the electrical variations of a patient's heart beat, an activity during the cardiac arrest. The electronic machined beeped indicating the patient's heart is becoming unresponsive.

A loud sound echoes, the graphs dying with the patients lack of response.

"Beep...beep.....eeeee-"

"Ready the CPR." The doctors move around trying one last time to save a life from falling into the jaws of death.

"Clear the chest, stand back."

The male doctor takes the two electric pads in his hand rubbing them. The AED device operates and signals for the shock wave, gripping the heart rate of the patient.

Everyone stands back watching as the pads land on the chest making the body jump with an impact.

1 minute left.

The doctor looks at the ECG for any signs of graph. Nothing

He places them down once again, the body hops still not responsive to the shock.

20 seconds left

During the cardiac arrest if the victim isn't treated by proper CPR, the brain receives severe damage within next two minutes, multiple organs fail and eventually leads to death.

The male doctor glances at the patient, taking a deep breath, he gives one last try or the inevitable will happen.

He presses the electronic pads for the third and the final time, another shock radiates, the body reacts jumping by the electric touch of the pads.

"Beep.. beep.. beep." The ECG starts as the person's heart finally starts to beat in a normal rhythm, finally out of the danger.

Everyone in the room cheers at their success bringing back the patient from the brink of death. The doctors sigh in relief congratulating each other.

The chest heaves up and down as the patient breathes under her unconscious state. She won the battle of life.

Giving her the necessary medications and after thorough check ups, the doctors leave the room.

Next day

During a routine check-up, one of the nurses notices that the young patient was waking up and rushed to call the doctors.

Meanwhile the poor soul struggled under her numb consciousness. She can hear the faint shuffling of people around and machines that went deep under her pale skin. A sharp pain radiates on the side of her skull.

Involuntarily she tries moving her legs and arms only to find stiffness among the muscles. She was confused as her entire body was on fire, throbbing in a dull pain.

Her chest felt sore for some reason unknown to her. The doctors were aware of the uneasiness the patient feels after their cardiac arrest but the girl wasn't aware of the fact that she went through one.

She fails to process anything in her mind, everything seemed so distant and blur to reality.

Slowly, the patient tries to open one eye, but her eyelids felt extremely heavy.

Ignoring the agonizing pain on the side of her head, she uses all her energy to lift her heavy eyelids only to be suppressed by the bright white light shining into those brown orbs, making the pupils dilate.

Involuntarily they squeeze shut.

The body goes extremely cold and then suddenly hot, making her grow weaker by each second.

"She's waking up." One of the staff members gasps, observing the miraculous sight.

The hazel haired patient curses under her breath, unable to move easily or look around. She could swear her head would burst any second because of the unspeakable pain in her skull.

This time she tries to open her eyes slowly, trying to adjust the light shining brightly into them. The vision finally gains a hold of itself and the surroundings.

Her head starts to spin making the poor soul dizzy. She sucks air through her teeth, suppressing a screech as the pain shoots up in her skull.

The first thing she notices is the pale-cream colored ceiling.

Scanning the surroundings, she finds the source of all the voices from earlier, dressed in white coats staring back at her.

No, let's make it more accurate.

They were staring like she came back to life from death, gawking at her without realization.

Or was it really the case?

"Miracle."

"Good work everyone."

"She made it out of coma." People whisper around her.

"Miss, how do you feel?" The same smooth voice of a woman asks.

"I..I-", the young girl's throat cannot muster enough energy, It was too dry for her to speak.

Her heart desired for water. As if her prayers were heard, the nurse closest helps her sit up. The lady brings a glass of water to her mouth and she gulps it like a thirsty camel.

The patient's body is too sore to move. She feels like thanking the nurse for the kind gesture and once again tried speaking,

"Th-han-" Her voice was merely a whisper that goes unnoticed by everyone.

Before she's able to utter any more broken phrases, two young ladies came running to her side to check the breathing rate, pulse, blood pressure and things that went beyond her knowledge.

She kept gazing at each of them.

She furrows her eyebrows and tried recalling when the last time she saw a human was.

Everything felt numb for her. There was a sick pain at the side of her head, not to forget her chest felt sore.

Slowly moving her gaze from the crowd, she observes the huge peach-cream color room. There are tons of machines surrounding her with beeping sounds.

Ahead of her stretcher, there was a small sofa set next to the open windows. From windows came the sun rays hitting the marble floor.

Something clicks within her.

Why Am I here? A shudder passes her.

The other two doctors, who kept glancing at the patient, continued scribbling on the notepad in their hands.

She desperately wanted to ask them the reason she's kept here but her throat decided to take her voice on a vacation.

Just then the girl spots something near the sofas from the corner of her eye.

Her jaw drops in horror seeing a shadow, no wait, it's more like a mannequin or a zombie, whose blackish-blue nerves clearly stood out on its rotten skin.

Her eyes bulge out at the sight of it and before she could alert the people around her, their eyes clash. Those orbs were pitch black, that it wasn't possible it could be real.

But little did the innocent teen know that her brain betrayed her vision.

The girl deadpanned. Her face pales in an instant.

A deep scream rumbles through from her chest. Anyone hearing it will know that she's completely insane.

The staff in the room rushed to her and tries to comprehend her absurd behavior.

The nurse at her right side tried to calm her down by stroking her head but she continues to plea and point helplessly at nothing but air.

"Shh..calm down. Nothing is there. You must be worn out. Please try to relax, nothing is there". The male doctor spoke concerned like everyone else in the room.

The doctors glance at each other unsure of her sudden change in her stance.

The patient gives him a are-you-blind-look but others seem to be saying the same mantra.

Tears brimmed her eyes.

She looks back to where she was pointing to see the creature was present only to find nothing but furniture.

"Miss, relax. You must be hallucinating. It's completely normal after what you have been through."- The female doctor sighs feeling sorry-"You just woke up from your two years of coma."

The female doctor explained in an attempt to calm her down.

The girl looks at her through blurry vision, torn at her words. Tears kept spilling out. It was meant to comfort her but she only felt devastated.

Coma?

Have I really lost my senses?

Am I seeing things? The girl drowns in her thoughts.

The blonde nurse to her right again tries to soothe her but what happens next wasn't something one can word.

The moment the patient turns to her voice, the nurse wasn't human anymore but a creature similar to what she witnessed a second ago.

Its one arm came down dangling in a odd position, blood trickled down from it's forehead. Her skin was no longer cream colored but that of a rotten meat.

The thing the teen is witnessing before her, stands there giving a sly smirk. Its other hand gripping a sharp piece of glass. In a snap, that glass was placed against the patient's warm neck.

She felt it.

The girl felt the broken glass piece almost digging its way into her skin. For a second, she stuns, deadpanned in terror.

Everything then goes in a slow motion. The time slows down for the scene to unfold.

Her eyes turn into the size of moon and screams so shrill it could shatter the window.

The crazy demon-looking nurse smirks, digging deep into the girl's neck but before it could severe her only neck, a punch flies as a reaction.

Adrenaline rushed into the patient's body. A survival instinct kicked in.

The creature's smirk changes into a deep frown before the girl's fist collides with its disgusting nose.

A sick sound of bones cracking resonates. She sends it flying back to the other side with a loud thud.

The time returns back into its normal form, leaving the witnesses shocked and confused seeing a sincere nurse get knocked out by a patient.

Cold sweat beads form on the patient's forehead. Her fist which was already sore seems to be throbbing in pain after she does damage.

The hospital staff watches in horror as no one moved fast enough to stop it from happening. The people around gasped as the girl lands a hit on the innocent nurse.

Suddenly two arms grab the teen and shook her. The terrified girl shuts her vision and tried to thrash away, not aware what's even happening or the harsh reality.

"STOP MISS."

"Calm down!"

Her eyes shot open to see panicked faces mirroring hers. The same female doctor from earlier was holding her steadily and trying to calm her down.

"Why would you hit her?"

"Her nose is bleeding, she's knocked out!"

Others in the room rush to the victim that received a solid hit on her nose.

Angered, the patient looks back at those voices to her right. They should be worried about the fact a creature tried to attack her yet they surrounded the nurse.

But little did she know.

Her breath hitches when her eyes land on the nurse. She is back to her  human form, lying next to the male doctor and other two nurses.

Her nose was indeed bleeding and she laid unconscious, as if she never was a crazy-looking demon.

Right then a sharp pain stings the girl's left arm. She snaps her head to see the female doctor injecting her with a foreign liquid making her dizzier within seconds.

Questions swirled in her mind like a hurricane.

As if she read the patient's thoughts. The doctor's lips were pressed into a thin line,

"You are hallucinating things around you, it's a side effect of your condition."

Those were the last words the young patient heard behind the chaotic background of others screaming for help to treat the poor nurse.

The dose made her eyelids feel heavy and soon she was drifting into darkness.

Hallucination.

Coma.

No one was there, no creature no demon.

The vision starts to blur and blackness surrounds her.

Playing the victim, I turned out to be the culprit.

Her own thoughts rang before she fell into the eerie silence of the darkness.
