Pt 1 Ch 9: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺𝘸𝘰𝘨
"Wait a sec, how big?" Steve questioned, keeping his eyes on the road trying to find Dustin's house.
Dustin held out his fingers at least and inch a part from eachother. "First he was like this," he pulled his hands out a foot. "Now he's like this."
I grunted in the passenger seat and sank down. "You good, Byers?" Steve looked over at me.
"I don't like big reptiles or lizards," I announced.
Steve pitied me. He looked back sternly at Dustin as though he were his mom about to scold him. "I swear to God, man, it's just some little lizard, okay?"
"It's not a lizard," Dustin scrunched his face.
"Great it's a mystery reptile, my favorite," I added.
"How do you know?" Steve asked Dustin.
"How do I know if it's not?" Dustin inquired as though Steve asked a stupid question.
"How do you know it's not a lizard?!?"
"Because, his face opened up and he ate my cat!" Dustin declared.
I cringed. "Valid point."
We pulled into the kid's driveway and got out. We followed Steve to his trunk as he got out a bat with nails engraved into it. "The hell is that for?" I queried.
"Practice," he sarcastically said.
Dustin walked us down the hill in his backyard to his basement. Steve leaned down to hear something. "I don't hear shlt."
"He's in there," Dustin quivered.
Steve tapped the lock on the handle with the bat. Nothing happened. He then proceeded to hit it. Steve stood there in silence for a second. He turned to Dustin, flashing his flashlight onto his face. "All right, listen kid. I swear if this is some sort of Halloween prank, you're dead."
"It's not a prank," Dustin uttered. "Get out of my face."
Steve handed me the flashlight. "You got a key to this thing?"
Dusting patted his pockets and pulled out a key. "Can you hold this?" Steve asked holding out the nail-infested bat.
"Sure, I guess," I responded, carefully taking the bat.
He looked into my eyes. I knew he could see my fear. "It's gonna be okay," he whispered.
I nodded. He continued to unlock the lock. Steve opened the door to reveal nothing but pure darkness. "He must be further down there," Dustin spoke. "I'll stay up here in case he tries to, uh, escape."
Steve sighed. "I'll go down with you," I offered.
Steve helped me down the stairs. I held the flashlight out and spotted a light. He clicked it on. In front of us was skin, shedded off of a very large lizard. I held my stomach as I watched it ooze with a clear, thick liquid. Steve inspected the skin and tapped it with his bat. He picked it up. I took my eyes off of the sheds and spotted something in the wall. I walked closer, inspecting the wall. "Steve, look," I pointed at the hole in the wall.
"Steve?!? Addie?!?" Dustin voice echoed throughout the basement. "Guys, what's going on down there?"
I flashed Dustin with my flashlight as I walked to the edge of the stairs. "Get down here," Steve commanded.
Dustin trotted down the stairs. Steve held the skin up. "Aw, shit."
I pointed to the hole in the wall. "Oh SHIT!"
We walked over. Dustin grunted as he leaned down to get a better look at the hole. He took his flashlight and shined it through the deep, long tunnel. "No way, no way," Dustin shuttered.
Whatever the hell Dustin raised, it was on the loose, and we had no idea where it was.
