"Oh yeah. Yeah, this will do," Steve said, taking off his sunglasses to admire the junkyard that lay before us. "This will do just fine. Good call, dude," Dustin smiles as Steve compliments him.
"This place looks like ass," I commented.
The place was really messy. It was filled with broken cars, but mainly, the large school bus caught my attention.
We all went to the basic middle area and dumped the rest of our meat into one pile. Steve took the buckets and stacked them up. Out of nowhere, a voice yelled. "I said medium-well!"
I turned to see two kids, a boy and Max? The boy was small, eleven or twelve, and he had a bike with him. Max looked rather upset. The boy began waving. "Who's that?" Steve finally asked.
Dustin just stared at the two with a kind of sad expression. When the boy got downhill, him and Dustin went behind a car. The two were arguing about something. Me, Max, and Steve began picking up boards to board up the bus. Max started a conversation I wish she wouldn't have. "I thought you went and hung out with Billy yesterday, but when he picked me up you weren't there," she said picking up a large metal sheet the size of her.
I trembled as I felt Steve's eyes on me. "No. Well, not after the movie is what I mean," I mumbled as Steve walked to pick up a board. "I just, I went out to his car to, uh, get something and I accidentally took Will's walkie-talkie, so I heard Dustin's cry for help on there, so I came to help the nerd."
"Oh, ok," Max said. "Just making sure that I wasn't starting to actually like one of Billy's girlfriends and then he like, doesn't like her anymore."
"We're not dating," I said.
"What?"
"Well, we're not official yet, so technically, I'm not his girlfriend," she looked at the ground.
"Oh," she muttered.
"But, who knows, things might change," I reassured her.
She nodded. "I guess."
Me and her continued picking up boards. "Hey, Dickheads! How come the girls are the only ones helping me out here? Come on, we lose light in like forty minutes," Steve yelled at the boys.
"Jesus Christ," the boy said.
"No need to be a total ass, God," Dustin said under his breath.
Thanks to the help of everyone, the whole bus was covered before the sun went down. Steve got the gasoline out of my bag and began pouring from the pile of meat all the way to the edge of the bus. Max retrieved a ladder from outside the bus, and she put it inside so that she could see over the bus. "I think we're good," I said, pulling off the sweaty, yellow gloves.
Steve hurried everyone inside of the bus and we all sat. Darkness fell and fog approached. I found out the boy's name was Lucas Sinclair. The boy went up the ladder and out of the roof to get a look at what was happening outside. He pulled out his binoculars and began looking around. Click. Click. Click. I turned to see Steve opening and closing the metal lighter. "So, you really fought one of these things before?" Steve turned to Max who asked the question.
Steve nodded lightly and went back to clicking the lighter. "And you're like, totally a hundred percent sure it wasn't a bear," Max questioned again.
"Shit don't be an idiot. Okay? It wasn't a bear. Why are you even here if you don't believe us? Just go home," Dustin threw his head back in annoyance.
"Geesh, someone's cranky. Past your bedtime?" Max retorted, climbing up the ladder to be next to Lucas.
"That's good. Just show her you don't care," Steve began.
I threw my hands up. "No! That was horrible. You just pissed her off and you ruined any chance of getting her, and that's coming from a girl!"
Dustin held a finger up to me and turned to Steve. "I don't."
Steve winked at Dustin. "Why are you winking, Steve, stop."
Steve shrugged and went back to clicking his lighter. I heard a growl from outside. I immediately turned around. Steve pushed the board up to get a good look. Dustin rushed over as well. "Lucas! What's going on up there?" Dustin hollered.
"Hold on!" Lucas yelled down. "I've got eyes, ten o' clock," he stuttered. "Ten o' clock!"
"There!" Steve pointed to the shadow in the misty fog.
"What's it doing?" Dustin asked.
"I dunno," Steve looked at me.
The creature chittered. He walked around the meat. "He's not taking the bait. Why is he not taking the bait?" Steve questioned worriedly.
"Maybe he's not hungry," Dustin presumed.
"Maybe, he's sick of cow," Steve said.
I couldn't take the suspicion anymore. I grabbed one of the two bats with nails and I walked to the door of the bus. "Addie?" Steve yelled.
"Addeline! What the hell are you doing?" Dustin shouted.
"Just get ready," I pointed to Steve's lighter.
I pulled the rusty door open. The bat was tightly in my grip. I felt a hand grab my wrist. It was Steve once more. "What are you-" before he could finish I pressed my finger to his lips.
"Shh," I whispered.
I began to whistle as Steve caught on. He grabbed the other bat and followed me out. "Come on, buddy," Steve requested.
"Come on, dinner time," I added.
"Yeah, dinner," Steve agreed. "Human tastes better than cat, I promise."
"Addie! Steve! Watch out!" Lucas wailed from the roof.
"A little busy here," Steve responded.
"Three o' clock! Three o' clock!" he roared.
I turned to see more than one full grown dart. There was more like six. "Steve, Addie, abort, abort!" Duston yelped from the entrance of the bus.
Both of us stood our ground. There was one behind Steve. It pounced for him but I bashed it to the ground with my bat. It jumped for me, but Steve hit it again. All three kids were at the entrance. "Guys run!" Max squealed.
"Hurry, guys!" Lucas yelled.
"Run you guys!" Dustin howled.
We both ran for the entrance as one of the Demogorgon's nipped at my heel. We barely made it in. When we did, Dustin and Lucas immediately shut the door. I fell on top of Steve. He held me safely. "See," he breathlessly said. "Not one scratch."
We shakily laughed. "Shit!" Dustin yelled as one clamored at the door.
I pulled away from Steve and placed another board in front of the door. "Are they rabid or something?"
"They can't get in! They can't," Lucas announced.
Everyone began screaming as one shook the bus left and right. All the kids moved to the back of the bus as I stayed at the entrance. Good thing I did, because one barged in. I pounded it with my bat until I felt its corpse. I heavily breathed as Steve kicked it out the door and closed it once again. I wobbled over to Steve, who grabbed me and began stroking my hair. "You're all right. It's all right."
I heard sighs of relief coming from everybody. Sadly, relief didn't last long as I heard banging overhead. Me and Steve walked slowly to the three. Max was frozen as she came into contact with one. It growled as she screamed. I pushed her out of the way as Steve took stance to fight the creature. "You want some? Come and get this!"
The creature stood back. Max began to cry a little as she hugged me. I pulled her closer to me and rubbed her head. As it jumped off the bus, Lucas came and held her hand. I heard him whisper something to her. She nodded. Steve went to the window. I followed him as he peered out the window. "What happened?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know," Lucas replied, looking into her eyes.
Dustin rolled his eyes and walked over to me and Steve. "Steve scared them off."
"No," Dustin confusingly turned to Steve. "No way. They're going somewhere."
