After the wholesome conversation, they had returned back to their respective rooms with preoccupied minds. It was going to be a fresh start for both of them. Till now, their actions were just ambling without any objective. This pact of enhancing communication between them would be providing a new direction to their relationship but it was still not known where it would take them.
Sameer was thinking about how Naina had sensibly understood whatever he had meant to convey to her. For a moment he had expected her to be mad at him for his unjust behavior, but she was not, much to his surprise. Rather, she had dealt with the situation rationally. He recalled Kabir's words when he had told him how those ladies at the party had addressed her as a low-standard and a gold-digger, indirectly.
His mind went back in time when he had lost his Nanu. Being shattered, his body and brain had been too numb to notice anything around him, including Naina. But Munna-Pandit had told him how she had quietly adjusted here without any complaint. She had been very thoughtful and generous about their critical times as she had also lent her hand in the official work when they weren't there. If she had to be after his money, she would have definitely taken an advantage of his vulnerable state, but she didn't. As far as he knew, she shared a very special bond with Nanaji which he wished to know about but let it be since he didn't want to sound clingy.
On the other side, Naina was, again and again, rewinding the whole conversation in her mind. He had apologized to her about his actions, though he wasn't really at fault. He had said those things out of frustration which she understood. He was right when he had said that they could possibly not right for each other. Even if Nanaji had fixed this alliance, it didn't necessarily mean that they would be happy with each other. He had been raised and brought up well by Nanaji which was very much evident. Apparently, she had never seen him behaving harshly or cruelly with someone or mistreating others unnecessarily.
Despite belonging to such a reputed family, one couldn't raise a finger on his values. Yesterday too, it didn't take him a minute full to reach by her side when Mrs. Mathur had pulled out that hideous stunt. He hadn't said anything but was there to comfort her, hold her when her mind had gone entirely blank, which had sufficed to provide her much needed endurance. She could still feel the warmth of his hands around her which had acted as a shield to protect her from those piercing gazes of people. And today, he had even apologized for not doing enough. Still, she just couldn't draw conclusions about him after only an incident or too. That's why she had agreed to him for knowing about each other.
Both of them called it a day with only one thing in their minds, they were ready to do this.
The next morning, Ramdhari was almost done with breakfast when Naina entered the dining area, simply attired in a beige colored cotton Saree, hair half pinned up.
"Good morning Bhabhi!" Ramdhari said gleaming towards her.
"Good morning Bhaiya..." She said passing a warm smile. "Kuch help karu main aapki?" She asked opening the lid of the vessel containing freshly cooked Poha, and checked on it.
Ramdhari replied, "Nahi nahi Bhabhi. Humne saara kaam kar liya hai. Aap bas naashte ke liye baith jaaiye."
As usual, she had woken up assuming Sameer had already left for work but looked like she had mistaken it today as she saw him descending the stairs buttoning up the sleeves of his Solid Grey shirt. He had paired it up black trousers, his black blazer hung on his arm.
As he stepped towards the dining area, his eyes met with Naina's curious ones. Pulling out a chair for himself, he laid his blazer on the back of it and passed a faint smile, "Good morning."
Her eyes widened with surprise, not much to be noticed. "Good morning." She replied softly.
She too pulled out a chair and sat leaving two chairs between them. Ramdhari noticed them, completely shocked to see them both sitting together for the first time. Sameer called out for Ramdhari without taking his eyes off his phone, "Jaldi se black coffee le aa meri."
Ramdhari replied, "Ji. Abhi laate hain."
Naina took a glance at Sameer and thought, 'Subah subah black coffee?' This made her frown in her head but didn't say anything.
Ramdhari served the freshly cooked Poha on the table along with their tea and black coffee as per their choices. A sense of happiness had engulfed his heart seeing his Bhaiya-Bhabhi together which could be seen through his actions as he put everything on the table a bit excitedly.
Sameer noticed him finding it to be amusing, "Ramdhari...tu bada khush nazar aa raha hai aaj. Kya baat hai? Humein bhi bata de zara."
Ramdhari beamed at him, "Haan. Aaj hum sach mein khush hain. Aaj ka din hi kuchh aisa hai."
Sameer smiled seeing him, "Aisi kya baat hai?"
"Bas yu samajh lijiye, humne apne Kanhaa ji se ek dua maangi thi. Aaj aisa lag raha hai ki woh jaldi hi puri ho jayegi." He saw Sameer's questioning gaze and continued instantly, "Par hum aapko nahi batayenge warna woh puri nahi hogi."
Sameer chuckled and tasted the Poha, "Thik hai mat bata. Kaash teri wish jald hi puri ho jaaye jisse hume aur achha khana mil sake. Achhe banaye hai waise aaj."
Ramdhari scowled, "Haan haan udaa lijiye mazaak. Dekha na aapne Bhabhi. Humesha aise hi karte hain yeh. Huh." Saying so returned back to the kitchen to pack their lunch with a grumpy face.
Naina giggled after witnessing the whole scene but subsided it as she sighted Sameer looking at her and resumed eating.
After mulling over it a lot, he had taken the plunge to proceed with things by taking little steps and this was their first step.
He voiced his thoughts out, "Maine socha ki agar hume sath mein office jana hai toh fir hum saath mein hi breakfast kar liya karenge."
Naina answered gently, "Ji."
Breakfast went on a light note with Sameer discussing a few details about one of their company's policies, the meeting for which had been organized the previous week. Naina didn't say much and answered mostly using monosyllables or short sentences. Ramdhari watched them in adoration and looked above closing his eyes for a second taking a deep breath as if thanking the god for granting his prayers. Though they were just sitting together, something was better than nothing.
After quickly washing their hands and grabbing their things, they made their way out of the house. Mohan had already parked the car in front of the entrance and was waiting for them only. He greeted both of them as soon as he spotted them and moved to open the gates for them. As they got seated, Mohan walked around the car and himself got settled on the driver's seat starting the engine after which they proceeded towards the office.
A few weeks passed by in a similar modus. They had become accustomed to having meals together, even in the office, though the degree of conversation was still limited to a few words. The workload had amplified due to the new consignment for one of their shareholders which kept them busy, not providing them much time to sit and talk to each other. Even then too, they had come to notice many things about each other. These few days had made them see each other in a new light.
His smooth way of balancing things between professional and personal front had made an impression on her. His eccentric vision, his high-moral standards, his perseverance, his integrity, and his confidence made him a nonpareil CEO, embodying his charismatic personality. She held high regard for him especially for the way he had pulled himself together after such a great loss just for the sake to fulfill his Nanu's big dream.
Apart from his fondness for black coffee and being a fitness maniac, she didn't really get to know much about him as a person. This didn't bother her given the fact that it was just the beginning. However, there was one thing which was objectionable, his habit of smoking. The other days, she had caught him in the act without his knowledge when he was roaming in the balcony, willfully deteriorating his lungs. She wondered if Nanaji knew about it.
As per Sameer, Naina had always been one of the best workers of Maheshwari Industries. In spite of being a quiet and reticent person, she was completely different when it came to her work. She had never been the one to chicken out from new challenges and hardships, and would always face them assertively. This would remind him how Nanu used to tell him about her disciplined self. Thinking about it, he admitted that she was worthy of all the appreciation. Yet, he was dubious about his decision.
He still remembered her reaction after what had happened at the party. He found her reaction very unusual. Her eyes held pain which wasn't only due to that incident. It was fathomless. Her enigmatic personality was making him inquisitive to know about her more. He knew he would have to wait since they had a very long way to reach that level and at this stage when they were completely blank about their future, this seemed out of question.
They were finally done with the shipment process. Sameer had himself visited the factory several times to check upon the functioning of everything, while Naina was taking care of the accounts department. After such a strenuous task, Sameer had decided to give a two-days break to all the staff and employees so that they could get enough rest to resume their work. Nanaji had always taught him that it was in his hands to keep his workers motivated and not to overwork them. According to him, recreation is important for a healthy and collaborative work environment. It had proven to be true since his workers seldom had any complaints regarding his leadership skills.
It was evening time. Winding up all the work, both of them made their way outside to back home. As Sameer was about to enter the security code which was something he had recently gotten at the entrance, Ramdhari opened it which made surprised since he would usually leave before this time. Entering inside, Naina observed him. The worry etched on his face made her ask, "Kya hua Bhaiya? Aap kuch pareshan dikh rahe hain?"
Sameer too asked, "Haan. Kuch baat hui hai kya? Aur aaj ghar bhi nahi gaya?"
"Woh, humare gaaon se aaj subah hi chitthi aayi hai. Humare Babuji ki tabiyat bohot zyada kharab hai. Hume apne paas bula rahe hain. Yeh bhi likha tha ki humari pushtaini zameen ke baare mein bhi kuchh baat karni hai unhe. Humara jaana bohot zaroori hai." He said in a gloomy tone.
"Fir toh tujhe kal subah hi nikal jaana chahiye. Aur kharche ki chinta mat karna, main saara intezaam karwa deta hun abhi. Aaram se sab kaam nipta ke aana." He said placing a hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
"Haan bhaiya. Aap aaram se jaaiye." Naina said.
"Par Bhabhi, hume shaayad wapas aane mein ek hafta lag jayega. Yahan ka kaam koun sambhalega?" Ramdhari put forward his concern.
"Aap itni si baat ke liye pareshan ho rahe hain. Bhaiya, abhi kaam nahi aapke Babuji ki tabiyat zyada zaroori hai." She said.
Sameer too agreed, "Aur kya. Hum dono milke sab kuchh sambhal lenge. Abhi toh do din humara bhi off hai. Tu bina kisi ki tension ke jaa aur dhyaan rakhna."
"Ji." He replied softly.
After freshening up, Naina helped him with the dinner whereas Sameer arranged for the train tickets. He then informed him that the arrival time of the train was at 7:30 a.m. the next morning and that Mohan would drop him to the station. Ramdhari left for his servant quarter not before thanking him and Naina for being so supportive. As he left Sameer turned back and saw Naina standing there.
"Dinner karle?" He asked. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and said, "Haan. Main serve kar deti hun."
He nodded, "Main abhi thodi der mein aata hun." Saying so he went upstairs, while she returned back to the kitchen for serving the food. Dinner was a quiet affair due to all the weariness from work following which they both called it a night.
******
The next day, Naina had woken up much earlier than her usual time to prepare something for Ramdhari which could be eaten anytime while on a train journey. Not being a skilled cook, she decided to go for a safe and easy option, Sev Murmura. Basically, it was a quick snack constituting Murmura (puffed rice), groundnuts, and fine sev as the main ingredients, making it crispy and tasty. To her luck, she found all the required ingredients in the kitchen and quickly initiated her work.
Placing a non-stick pan on the stove, she turned it on and added a little amount of oil. Waiting for a few seconds to let it heat enough, she added some curry leaves making them splutter, after which she added the groundnuts and sauteed them till they turned golden brown. A pinch of turmeric powder was sprinkled on it and after a good mix, she switched off the flame. Adding sufficient quantities of Sev and Murmura along with some salt to taste, she mixed and tossed it well. In less than 10 minutes, she was done with it. She packed it in a container, ready to be taken.
Sameer's peaceful slumber had broken when he heard some hustle and bustle downstairs. On reaching downstairs, he found Naina placing a packed tiffin on the dining table. She was still in her night attire, her hair pulled up in a messy bun.
Ramdhari was keeping his bag in the car when Naina came outside holding that tiffin container and forwarded it to him, "Bhaiya, yeh maine aapke liye banaya hai. Isme Sev Murmura hai, safar mein khaane ke liye jab bhi aapko bhookh lage. Uhh...Mujhse paranthe nahi bann paate itni jaldi isiliye maine yahi bana diya." She told him the last part hesitantly.
Ramdhari felt emotional not being used to so much concern, "Aapne humare liye itna socha wahi bohot hai. Bohot bohot dhanywad aapka." He took the container and spotted Sameer standing at a distance behind her with a smile adorning his face as he found the whole scene cute, to be specific, the way she said that. "Hum aap dono ka yeh ehsaan kabhi nahi bhulenge. Hum jald hi wapas aayenge." Ramdhari joined his hands.
That's when Naina came to know about his presence. Their eyes met for a mere second before he came forward and turned his gaze towards Ramdhari, "Pagal hai kya. Kaisi baat kar raha. Tu koi paraya thodi na hai. Bas aaram se jaa aur apna kaam karke aa. Sab theek ho jayega." He patted his back as he said it. A warm feeling engulfed Ramdhari and he thanked his stars for being a part of the Maheshwari family.
After the heartfelt goodbyes and Take care, Ramdhari left. As they both walked inside the entrance hallway, realization dawned upon them, they have the whole house only for themselves for the next seven days. Sameer yawned and stretched his arms catching Naina's attention and instantly straightened his posture.
"Agar aapko aur sona hai toh aap chale jaaiye." She suggested.
It was like she read his mind because he literally wanted to jump back to his bed to get much-needed sleep. Too tired to say anything, he nodded and silently went back to his room. Naina sighed and thought about the next thing to be done. It was 7:00 am now. Not willing to go back to sleep, she decided to do some cleaning and then have something for breakfast.
Being done with it, she came back to her room and stepped into the bathroom to have a bath. It was still 9:00, which meant that she still had ample time to do something productive. A few minutes later, she was standing in front of her closet deep in thought. Taking out a deep maroon diary, she opened it slowly. It was a leather hardcover diary with pages tinted in light brown-yellowish color, implying that it was old. The sweet and musky smell hit her nostrils as she flipped through its pages. It was her one of the most prized possessions, securing some unspoken thoughts and musings, some in form of poetries while others in the form of short tales and stories.
This had been her only source of earning when she had started off her new self-reliant life. The sheer brilliance in her writing skills had grabbed the attention of many small-scale publishing companies that had wholeheartedly accepted it. The stipend she would get for her articles was clearly not much but was enough to cater to some of her basic needs.
It had been a long time since she had jotted down anything and today she wanted to make another addition to it. Sitting in her study chair, she took out a pen from the holder and began writing, getting so engrossed that she couldn't keep a check on time. It was until a series of gentle knocks echoed in the room.
"Naina...Tum andar ho na?" Sameer's voice came from another side. Her gaze went towards the wall clock making her eyes widened reflexively, 12:30 p.m. She immediately stood up closing her diary and strode towards the door. He was going to knock again when the door opened revealing her.
"I am sorry. Mujhe time ka bilkul dhyan nahi raha. Aapko kuch chahiye?" She said in a single go.
"Naina it's okay...Maine toh abhi tak kuch bola hi nahi. Tum itni pareshan kyu ho rahi ho?" Her reaction made him confused. It's like a sudden realization dawned upon her. He was just asking gently.
"Uhh...haan. Sorry. Aap kya keh rahe the?" She asked. "Main thodi der pehle hi soke utha tha. Neeche check kiya tum thi nahi toh isliye puchha." He said.
"Haan woh main kuch kaam kar rahi thi." She noticed him carefully, his face was telling her that he wanted to say something else. "Aapko kuch aur bhi kehna tha?"
Iss baar bhi pata chal gaya, kaise? He thought. Rubbing his neck, he said, "Tum mere liye black coffee bana sakti ho kya? Ramdhari bhi nahi hai aur mujhse bann nahi paati thik se."
"Haanji, abhi bana deti hun." Saying so, she made her way downstairs with him on her heels. Whilst Sameer got settled on the sofa picking up the newspaper, Naina went inside the kitchen. Through his side, he could see her working in the kitchen. To any other person, it would look like an ordinary scene with a husband sitting in the living room and his wife working in the kitchen. But looks could be deceiving. Only they knew about reality.
Fifteen minutes later, he watched her stepping out of the kitchen holding a tray with the mug of his black coffee. Whilst handing the mug to him, their fingers brushed for a mere second sending a tingle to their skin but none of them manifested it.
Before she could turn to go, he intervened, "Lunch ka time bhi ho raha hai. Tum kuch simple hi bana lena." She replied with a nod and returned to the kitchen. He watched her retreating back and drew his attention back to the black coffee she had just made for him. He closed his eyes and smelled the spicy, burnt aroma of the coffee. Not wasting much time, he took a sip and god, it tasted heavenly, just the way he wanted. There was a perfect balance between the acrid and the bittersweet flavor which made him admit that it was undeniably the best he ever had.
Inside the kitchen, Naina stood leaning towards the slab, her fingers busy tapping it. She was extremely nervous. How was she supposed to tell him that she doesn't know much about cooking? That she had never made a proper, full meal before? Would he be angry, like him? Would he too rebuke her, like him? She had seen his frightening anger before.
Being preoccupied, she didn't realize when Sameer came and halted at the entrance. He had come to put his empty coffee mug and was expecting her to be busy at work. But, seeing her standing idle made him knit his eyebrows.
"Tumne abhi tak kuch shuru nahi kiya?" His voice had a tone of disapproval that jerked her out of the reverie. Her eyes held fear which again made him bemused. She stuttered, "W-woh...m-mujhe...mujhe khaana banana nahi aata."
He lifted one is eyebrow and said without any emotion, "Nahi aata?" She hooked her head in negation, becoming more scared of stiff expressions. He just kept looking at her without saying anything whereas she took his silence to be that before the storm. However, her opinion changed when she found him chuckling the next minute, making her eyebrows furrow this time.
"Tum itna ghabra kyu rahi ho? Tumhe kya laga main kuch bolunga tumse? It's okay Naina. It's not a big deal." He said bringing himself back to normal.
"Aap gussa nahi hai?" She asked in uncertainty. "Arey, isme gussa hone wali kounsi baat hai. Yeh toh normal hai. Bohot logon ko khana banana nahi aata toh kya sab unpe gussa karte hain? Nahi na?" His voice was gentle this time.
"Mujhpe toh karte the." She mumbled too low to be heard by him. "Sorry, what?" He asked. "K-kuch nahi...Toh ab kya karenge? Mujhe thoda bohot hi banana aata hai." She tried diverting the topic which went unnoticed by him.
"Kya karenge, saath mein hi banaate hain kuch. Kafi time hai aur kuch recipe books rakhi hain, unme definitely kuch easy sa mil jayega, what say?" He propounded but her mind went somewhere else. He wasn't angry, like him. He didn't insult her, like him. What was she even thinking before comparing him with him? He had his Nanu's blood which could never put anyone down. She was a complete fool to have expected him to do so. Seeing her lost again, he clicked his fingers in front of her which broke her trance, "Tum thik ho na? Baar baar kahan kho jaati ho? Main kabse bole jaa raha hu..."
"Sorry, kya keh rahe the aap?" She asked. "Pehle toh har baat pe sorry bolna band karo and second, udhar left drawer mein kuch recipe books hain woh nikaalo, main tab tak check karta hu fridge mein kya kya available hai." He gestured towards the cupboard behind her. She quickly opened and found a few books. "Fridge mein yeh kuch vegetables thi aur yeh rice bache hain." He stated. Naina pondered over it and suggested, "Hum Fried Rice bana sakte hain."
Picking up the book, she flipped through its pages, searching for the said dish and at last, got it, "Yeh dekhiye, isme rice ko boil karna padta hai, par humare paas pehle se hain toh easy rahega."
"Okay, Koi problem nahi hai." He said.
Both of them distributed their tasks. Naina decided to take the hold of Fried Rice while Sameer decided to pair them up with some Chilli Paneer as they had got some instant Masala packets.
After a while, Sameer was busy frying the Paneer whereas Naina was chopping the vegetables. She was actually taken aback by the fact that he'd got some cooking skills. They momentarily stole each other's glances while doing their work when Naina finally voiced out her thoughts, "Aapko cooking aati hai?"
He shrugged, "Thodi bohot. Basic kaam kar leta hun main. Pehle bhi Ramdhari ne kayi baar chhutti li hai, tab main aur Nanaji milke kuch na kuch bana lete the."
His mind drove back to those days when he and Nanaji would experiment in the kitchen, cracking up jokes, messing up the entire kitchen which would take hours to clean up. She saw his eyes turning moist and his jaw clenching as if trying to control himself from bursting open in front of her. Being immersed in reminiscing those times, he got distracted from his task due to which his hand was about to touch the rim of the pan.
"Sameer!" She reflexes were timely as she tugged his hand far just when it was about to touch the hot pan. His trance broke finding her holding his hand, a worried expression lingering on her face. His gaze automatically shifted to their hands. Naina saw it and instantly withdrew her hand. Without any exchange of words, they both returned to their tasks.
Intending to lighten the air, she began the conversation again, "I'm sure aapko mujhse zyada hi aata hoga. Main toh simple paranthe bhi gol bana du, wahi bohot hai." He chuckled while tossing the veggies with already fried paneer, "I don't think so. Tumne coffee kafi achhi banayi thi. Thank you for that."
She said shyly, "Woh toh bas Ramdhari ne bataya tha ki aapko kaisi zyada achhi lagti hai, so usi ke according maine bana di." He knew she was being modest to take credit so he continued, "Okay...Toh pehle koun banata tha?"
"Pehle toh Shaila Chachi banati thi." She said at once without thinking. "Shaila Chachi?" He inquired without averting his gaze from the simmering gravy. She mentally reprimanded herself for her lack of attention. "M-meri helper thi, kaam karne ke liye aati thi. Khaane ka bhi sab wahi dekhti thi." She told him while adding the spices in accordance with the recipe.
"Tumhari? Tum akele rehti thi?" He questioned. She replied with a meek nod. "Aur tumhari family?" Her face paled on the mention of that word. She didn't want to talk about it, and what would she say anyway when she didn't have any. "Pata nahi." She again attempted to divert the subject by pointing out at the rice which was ready to eat. This time, he didn't overlook it.
She used to live alone, but why? How did she manage to live alone in this big city? Where was her family?
Something was wrong. Her dull mood reflected the agony it held but he knew it wasn't the right time to ask for it, therefore, he chose not to press on the matter.
In a span of a minute or two, the Chilli Paneer was ready, due to the Instant Masala which made his work easier. It took them barely an hour to cook the complete meal together. Cleaning up the slab, they finally served both of the dishes for themselves and got settled on the dining table. Sameer was the first one to taste both the dishes. As he took the first bite, Naina tried to read his expressions with apprehension.
He replied after gulping it, "Tumne toh kaha tha tumhe khana banana nahi aata. Yeh toh kafi tasty hai. Tum bhi try karo." He said taking one more bite in his mouth.
She obeyed and tasted it. It was actually good. She was astounded by herself. Did she really cook this and too so delicious? But how? "Haan ache toh lag rahe hain. Paneer bhi achha lag raha hai."
"Usme toh kuch khaas nahi hai. Maine toh zyada kuch kiya bhi nahi." He answered devouring his food.
Rest of the lunch went calmly. Something had changed. This time, in a positive sense. The aura around them, which used to be nothing but awkward had switched to soothe and comfort, unbeknownst to them.
Naina initiated "Dinner mein kya-"
"Bahar se." Came his prompt reply to which she burst into giggles, followed by Sameer. A few minutes back, she looked so glum but now, the sound of her laugh gave an inward and indefinite satisfaction to him for being the reason for it.
Someone has said it right,
"The little things? The light moments? - They aren't little."
******
The rest of the day had passed with them busy with their respective works. As agreed on, they had ordered dinner from a nearby hotel. After being done with it, Sameer had left to his room for an urgent call leaving Naina to discard the disposable food containers and clean up the kitchen. Switching off the lights and locking the main gate, she headed upstairs.
She turned the knob of the door of her room, but it didn't budge and tried again by twisting it with a jerk but failed. After several futile attempts, she decided to call Sameer for help. She knocked on his door and waited for him. A few seconds later, the door opened revealing him only his vest and track pants. Still busy with the call, he gestured her to wait by showing his index finger, and she did. The tight-fitting vest displayed his sinewy muscles sending butterflies to her belly. He really was a fitness-freak. Ending the call, he came back and asked, "Haan bolo Naina."
Still in a daze, she replied, "Mere door ka room lock ho gaya hai."
"Huh?"
Her eyes widened with the realization of what she just blabbered and shook her head, "Woh...woh mere room ka door lock ho gaya hai. Khul nahi raha. Aap please check kar lijiye."
"Haan chalo." He followed her to her room and made an effort to open the door but it still didn't move. He also tried pushing it but in vain.
"Lagta hai jam ho gaya hai. Yeh nahi khulega." He affirmed making her sigh in exhaustion.
It's gonna be a long night.
