Solo Surgery

[season 5 episode 10]

"Guess this means no sexy time..."

^ I made this gif of Mark and Alison.

"That's pretty normal," Addison replied over the phone as she talked with Alison and Mark on speaker phone. "With Alison's case since she's had low platelet levels off and on."

"You sure?" Mark asked in concern as he rubbed Alison's back up and down soothingly, getting out the knots that had accumulated from not being able to sleep well.

Mark had to eventually buy her a pregnancy pillow but he missed sleeping in his fiancé's arms.

"Look Mark, Morgan is the best OB out there. Well, besides me of course," she gloated about herself and Alison shook her head humorously. "I wouldn't have recommended her if I didn't believe she could handle Alison."

"Thanks Addie," Alison and Mark tell her over the phone. "Miss you!"

"Of course. Thanks for keeping me updated on how baby boy is doing. I miss you guys too! You should come visit me sometime."

"We will definitely have to come visit you sometime!"

"I'm glad she thinks everything is okay," Mark tells her since Morgan had faxed the information to Addison for Alison. Morgan at first was a little put off at the fact that they wanted the information faxed to Addison from the beginning, but she then slowly got over it and was happy to keep Addison up to date. "Not that I don't trust Morgan. I just think Addison is the best."

"I agree," Alison nodded her head in agreement. "I'm just glad everything seems to be okay. I have my first transfusion appointment this week."

"Good. I'll be sure to meet up with you at some point during your appointment. I have to go to the meeting with the chief," Mark told his fiance as he looked into her hazel eyes.

"Right. The solo surgery meeting," she nods her head and drinks her water. "I wish I could vote. But it has to be attending's only," she repeated as she mocked the Chief's voice (very badly at that).

Mark chuckled and shook his head. He leaned forward and kissed her.

"I love you," he murmured to her.

"I love you too," she murmured back and he left.

*

While Mark was in the meeting with the other attending's, Alison went to go check on one of her patients.

"Doctor Ali," Marissa's eyes lit up when she spotted the blonde ped's surgeon and she walked through the door.

"How's my favorite patient doing?" Alison asked as she took her stethoscope off from around her neck to listen to Marissa's heart and check her vital signs.

"You say that to all your patients," Marissa giggled and then stopped once she felt the cold instrument on her.

"Can you take a few deep breaths for me?" Alison asked and the patient did as told.

"Everything seems great," Alison tells Marissa and her mom, Stephanie. "I still hear the murmur but that's normal with her heart condition. And I don't say every patient is my favorite, silly."

Marissa was a patient that Alison had been seeing since she was three years old. She was five now and was needing a new pulmonary valve. She's already had two heart surgeries prior and Alison thought she was the strongest girl she knew. So many people could learn lessons from Marissa.

"How long do we have if we wait for the surgery until you give birth?" Marissa's mom, Stephanie, asked.

"I'm thirty-two weeks so you have some time," Alison told her. "I'll be on maternity leave after I give birth but I'll be back after that."

"Don't get me wrong, Doctor Kenley is great with Marissa. But we really like you and would prefer to have you as the surgeon."

"Aw thank you," the blonde surgeon smiled. "She's a great kid and I would happily do the surgery for her if that's what you all want."

"We know that you already probably had a baby shower but we wanted to get you something," Stephanie told their doctor.

"You did not have to get me anything," Alison tells her as the mom reaches next to her chair to pick up the gift bag.

"I know but we wanted to," she smiles. "Didn't we, Marissa?"

"Yeah," Marissa nods her head with excitement.

"She loves babies so we had fun with this gift."

"Is it okay if I open it here?" Alison asks her patient and the patient's mom.

"Of course!"

Inside she first found the card. It was a 'Congratulations on the baby' card and she opened it up to read the sweet note from her patient and then her mom. When she dug more into the gift bag she pulled out a gray elephant that was the WubbaNub Pacifier.

"Aw, this is so cute," Alison told them with a smile.

"There's more," Marissa whispered shouted.

"There's more?" Alison acted surprise but she could feel that there was more the first time.

"Uh huh," Marissa nodded her head which made the two adults laugh.

Alison also pulled out Sophie la Girafe Teether and then a book that was titled Finding First Words and more!

"These are perfect," Alison told her patient and Stephanie as she gave them a hug. "Thank you so much!"

"What do you say, Marissa?" Stephanie asked her daughter.

"I'm glad you like them," she said a bit more shy this time.

"You guys don't have to make a decision today on when you want to do the surgery," Alison explains to the mom. "You can always call my PCT, Savannah," she tells Stephanie as she hands her the card. "She handles my surgery scheduling."

"Thank you," Stephanie tells her as she takes the card in her hands. "I'll talk it over with my husband and Marissa more and we will get in touch with Savannah."

Lexie was watching the Chief talk about the residents with the attending's. She spotted Mark sitting next to Derek and some other attending's standing behind them. While this was going on, Alison was getting her first round of blood infusions to help with her platelet levels. She hoped that this worked because she didn't tolerate pain very well.

"He said Karev," Lexie told her fellow interns, slightly out of breath from running to them.

Ryan made a face out of excitement and boasting because that's who he thought it would go to. He took off running to the room where the resident's were and opened the door. All of the resident's had their attention on him.

"He said Karev," Ryan repeated.

"Yes!" Alex gloated.

"Are you sure?" George scrunched his face up, not believing this and putting doubt into Ryan.

"Your sure, sure?" Izzie asked him and Ryan wasn't so sure anymore so he ran off back to Lexie leaving a disappointed Alex behind him.

"Stevens," Graciella told the resident's with a bright smile. "He said Stevens!"

"Well, which is it morons?" Alex raised his voice with frustration. "Stevens or Karev?"

"This is stupid," Cristina comments. "You guys are going to trust these imbeciles to tell you whose getting solo surgery?"

"Is this hard for you?" Izzie gloats to Cristina for the first time and Cristina can't help but be annoyed at the blonde but she still looks at her. "Being banned from the solo surgery must be really hard for you," Izzie comments to her and Denny puts his ghost arm around Izzie.

"Mean streak. I like it," Denny tells her.

"He changes his mind," Meredith tells the group. "He's been known to change his mind."

"Please don't do that," Cristina says to Meredith. "You guys go ahead and will yourselves to be voted in. Here's a secret."

"Grey," Steve says as he stumbles into the room. "Chief said Grey."

"Come on, this is bogus," Alex tells the group, annoyed.

"You guys are just now figuring that out?" Miranda smirks as she makes her coffee. "Steve is not a lip reader. None of the interns are lip readers. Just have to wait for the attending's to vote like we did when I won."

"You won your solo surgery?" Cristina asks with amazement.

"I'm gonna pretend you didn't feel the need to ask me that question," Miranda sasses back. "Yang, of course I won! I was good. I didn't cut LVAD wires, put my hand in body cavities and I didn't have my intern's operating on themselves. I was special. I was young, gifted and black. And everyone knew it. The attending's knew it and the Chief knew it. I didn't have to act like I could read lips," she says with a pointed look at Steve and Graciella. "Just go about my work. Calm and waited for my name."

"Okay," Lexie runs into the room and is slightly out of breath. "It's done."

"Oh, whatever Helen Keller," Alex replies with a slight attitude.

"No, I'm serious. The Chief sent me. They made their choice."

"Who is it?" George asks curiously.

"It's you," Lexie points her finger at the person who got it.

*

Alison had ran a quick stop for a lunch break at her favorite restaurant at the moment which was Doc Greens. It satisfied all of her cravings and it was just so good. Obviously afterwards, she would stop buy Crumbl Cookie. Because why wouldn't she?

She ordered the Dr. Ranchero salad for herself, Dr. Fruity salad for Clair, Dr. Buffalo Chicken salad for Derek and then the Dr. Tomahawk salad for Mark since he loved spicy food and the chicken that was on the salad was spicy. She had also ordered herself a Thai Chicken wrap because being pregnant meant that she was even more hungry.

She was waiting for her order when Mark sent her a text.

Mark It's done. We voted.

She opens up her phone by swiping up and allowing her iPhone to do face recognition before she goes to her text messages.

Alison Who is it?

Three bubbles pop up letting Alison know he was texting her back.

Mark Cristina. But since the Chief disqualified her, she has to choose someone else.

Alison That's bullshit.

Alison shakes her head and lets out an annoyed huff at the news Mark had texted her right then. How could Chief Webber do that to Cristina? She didn't understand him sometimes and this was one of those times. In her eyes, Cristina was the only resident deserving of the solo surgery. She had put in the time, determination and desire to learn. Plus she was driven. What other resident was like that? Meredith? Maybe. But she was also very focused on Derek at the moment which was fine. But enough to win solo surgery? Not really. Izzie was off in la la land doing who knows what and Alex was hung up on Izzie but at least he still showed up to work. If she were to have a second pick, she supposed Alex would suffice. Alison loved George and though he had made improvement from having to repeat intern year to now finally being a resident, Alison didn't think he was ready for solo surgery just yet.

You had to be confident. Sure of yourself and your ability to make sure the outcome of the surgery was successful and not a complete fuck up.

She should know as she was also chosen to be the solo surgery winner for her year. It was something that she took great pride in and had it listed on her resume.

"Alison?" The worker called her name and she snapped out of thought as she went to the register's station to show her receipt to them. "Here you go," he handed her the to-go bag and gave her a plastic cup so that she could get her Diet Coke.

"Thank you," she gave him a soft smile and grabbed everything in her hands as she made her way over to the drink station where she added some ice and then her Diet Coke, making sure to put a lid on it when she was done.

After she got her items, she put the bag in her car and then made her way into Crumbl Cookies where she had already ordered her cookies on the app and was now waiting in the short line that they had. She bought a box of cookies for the other fellows in her class and thought they might like this treat. When they showed her the cookies in the box, she agreed that it all looked to be what she ordered, thanked them and left to go back to work.

*

"What's all this?" Mark and Derek asked from the door as Mark leaned against the doorway at the box of Crumbl Cookies.

"Pregnancy cravings," Alison grins. "I have your guys lunch if you're hungry."

"Have I mentioned how much I love you?" Derek grins at his person and gives her a side hug before collecting his lunch.

"Hey, back off," Mark jokes as he acts like he's offended. "She's mine and she's carrying precious cargo."

"Speaking of baby," Derek began as he sat down in the lounge and began opening his lunch, pulled up a chair and began digging into his salad. "Do you guys have everything ready for when he arrives?"

"Pretty much. Right babe?" Alison asked Mark who nodded his head in-between munching on his food.

"Yeah," he answered after swallowing. "We got the hospital bag all packed and shit."

"You nervous for when the day comes?" Derek asked them as the three of them ate their lunch and continued to talk.

"I'm calm right now but I'm sure when it comes, I'll shit my pants," Mark snickered and Alison slapped his shoulder slightly since she was eating lunch.

"Even though I did not need to hear that while eating," Alison pointed her fork at Mark and squinted her eyes and he tilted his head back as he laughed. "I just hope I'm a good mom," she let out a sigh as she ran played with the ends of her hair that was in a bubble braid high ponytail.

"Of course you'll be a good mom," Derek spoke softly as he stopped eating for a minute to direct his attention to his person. "Your great with kids and they love you."

"I know," Alison let out a shaky breath and Mark rubbed her shoulder in a comforting way as both men listened to her. "I just - you have all these thoughts running through your mind as you'll get to be a first time parent, you know? There's all of these firsts that you and your partner are going to experience together and its kinda nerve-racking in a way. So that's kind of what's going on with me," she shrugged her shoulders and placed a kiss on Mark's cheek.

It was in that moment that Derek looked at Alison and Mark's relationship differently. It made him question why he ever doubted Mark's true intentions with his person and it made him feel awful for ever calling Alison a whore. In a way he was jealous of their relationship. The tables were turned now and Mark now had the life that Derek wanted. A stable, loving relationship, engaged and with a baby on the way. Mark was living his dream. Though him and Meredith were in a much better place, he wanted what Mark and Alison had.

That was the dream.

"Well, I'm sure you both will be great. You have great parents to look up to from how they raised you," Derek pointed out to her.

"True," she let out a laugh as Mark now had his left hand on her right thigh comfortingly.

They were both nervous about this next stage in their relationship because they didn't want to mess up. But they were also excited. Mark was finally getting the family he never had but always wanted. He just hoped that his son loved him.

Some of his patients had been telling him horror stories of their first time as parents and it made him freak out a little more. They weren't even doing it to educate the new dad as Mark knew most of them were either divorced or just weren't crazy about children.

He knew that he would do okay though as long as Alison was the one by his side.

*

The resident's were all gathered around the nurses help desk and what they didn't realize was that Denny's ghost was with them too. They were obviously anxiously awaiting the news.

"I am happy to announce the first solo surgery will take place tonight," he tells the group of resident's. "A below the knee amputation. Bone cancer," he continued on with his speech as the resident's began talking quietly amongst themselves. "Choosing who gets the first solo surgery isn't just about who has the best surgical skills. Whose logged the most hours in the OR. It's about the highest form of trust. The trust to put a patient's life into one of our resident's hands. And for the first time that I can recall, every single attending picked the same person. Doctor Yang," Richard finished as he turned to look at the resident. "However, Doctor Yang is out of the running and is going to pick the winner instead. Doctor Yang post her decision on the OR board at four pm. Also, since your interns are still banned from the OR, the winner will be allowed a fellow resident to scrub in. Good luck," he completes his speech and the rest of the resident's leave while Cristina stays back.

"This is torture for me," she tells Richard.

"I'm not even done."

"Sir?"

"Doctor Dixon is back. You'll be spending the day with her. You will impress her and you will make sure this hospital impresses her. At the end of the day I want that woman to be my next Head of Cardio. If she's not, I'll know who to blame," Richard tells the resident and as he begins to leave he yells, "good luck!"

*

Alison needed a cardiologist badly. Honestly, what hospital didn't have one? Only them. Sure, they had cardiologists working at Seattle Grace but none were the head.

"Does anyone know where Stevens is?" Alison asked Tyler as she walked over to the nurses station desk. "I haven't seen her all week..."

"You and everyone else," Tyler commented and Alison was confused.

"Well, where has she been?" Alison asked. She had asked for Izzie to be on her services today and so far the blonde was a no show. What resident just doesn't show up for work?

"No one knows, Doctor Anderson," Tyler shook his head. "Do you need someone else on your services?" He asked the fellow.

"Yeah, I think I might," Alison said with disappointment evident in her voice and Tyler felt bad for the doctor. She was continuously let down by Izzie Stevens and not to mention she had a horrible Head of Pediatrics surgeon as her teacher. Seemed like the only good thing going for her right now was Mark and their baby. "Thanks for letting me know, Tyler," she smiled at the nurse and gave him a pat on his shoulder.

"Of course," he gave her a soft smile. "Let me know if I can help at all today with any of your patients."

"I will," she agreed. "I should be good for now though. Thanks!" She tells him before walking off and going to find Richard. No matter how annoyed she was at her boss for his treatment of Cristina verses how he treated Meredith, she still needed his help.

*

"Ahh, Doctor Anderson," Richard let out a small grin as he saw the Ped's surgeon but then stopped when he saw the look on her face. "What can I do for you?"

"Get me a new resident," she told him. "Are any of them available today or at the moment? I have a surgery at two o'clock today for a one year old who needs midface surgery after being diagnosed with Pfeiffer Syndrome," she finishes.

"I'll see if I can switch Grey onto your services today," Richard agreed. "Are there any other resident's who are going to be in on your surgery?"

"Yeah, Mark and Derek are going to scrub in with me along with Doctor Kenley."

Alison would have asked for Lexie to be in on her services today if she wasn't banned from the OR right now. But she can't.

"Good," Richard his nods his head thoughtfully in consideration.

"Thank you," Alison gave him a small smile which quickly faded. "But don't think I'm not mad at you at your treatment over Cristina," she told him. "If you're going to be hard on one of them you have to be hard on all of them. You can't play favoritism, Chief," she tells him and then walks off. She didn't even wait for his response.

He knew that this was her Wendy Darling coming out in her but also knew she was being one-hundred percent truthful too.

It was true. If there was one thing that pissed Alison more than anything it was people in the work place who played favorite's. And for some reason the Chief played favorite's with Meredith all the time. She wasn't jealous but she was tired of it.

*

"Cristina still hasn't talked to me," Lexie told her fellow interns. "Which is normal but its worse. Two week suspension and she hasn't even bothered to say one mean thing."

"Karev called me a moron," Graciella chimed in to the group. "Which is good."

"Well, none of the resident's even look at me," Sadie told them.

"The least they could do is hate us," Lexie commented.

"Well I'm going to get some sex," Ryan told the group randomly. "Sex always makes me feel better."

"Don't look at me," Graciella tells him.

"Me neither," Lexie comments.

"That makes three of us," Sadie agrees with Graciella and Lexie and then leaves.

*

"You know, I have a lot of respect for Doctor Webber," Alison began and Cristina was wondering where she was going with this. "But him making you choose from your colleagues, your friends, is really messed up. For what it's worth - Mark and I thought you would have been excellent in the solo surgery. I wasn't allowed to vote because I'm not an attending but if I was I would've voted for you."

"Thanks," Cristina gives the blonde a small smile but that didn't mean it didn't hurt any less.

"So... do you know who you're gonna choose?" Alison asked as she drank her vitamin water.

"No clue," Cristina replied.

"Well I would say don't go for the obvious choice just because people expect it from you," Alison said as she gave her advice. She meant don't just go for Meredith because she was her person. "Go for the person you feel is best suited for the solo surgery. Good luck."

"Thanks."

Cristina was grateful for Alison's advice because everyone (especially Meredith) was speculating that she would pick Meredith. But at the moment Cristina didn't want to. Not to get back at her or anything or because she was her person but because at the moment, Cristina didn't feel like she deserved it. If that was wrong thinking then so be it. But in this moment she wanted to be selfish and do the exact opposite of what everyone was predicting.

*

Lexie, feeling awkward for some reason, walks up to Mark as he's at the nurses station and filling out the patient's chart. She gives him an awkward smile as he quickly glances at her and then goes back to filling out his patient's chart.

"Hi. I get it," she starts off. "I'm the one who organized a crazy group of secret cutter interns. The thing is, I've been advised to seek out sex as a way to get out of my sad predicament," she said which caught Mark's attention and made him think she was flirting with him. Which instantly made him stop. "But I think I would rather just learn today so - what do you say? You, me..."

"Why are you talking about sex with me? It's inappropriate. I know I'm good looking and all but I'm engaged and soon to be a dad," Mark told her. "I'm your teacher. I have things to teach. Double board certified things."

"T-that's what I was talking about," Lexie says freaking out now. "For you to teach me medicine! The sex was just a joke. I would never flirt with you," Lexie finishes as she scrunches up her nose in disgust.

"Doctor Sloan," Miranda calls out to the Plastic Surgeon. "Um, I heard that you're performing a hypopharynx reconstruction today?"

"To make a woman speak again," Mark told her.

"Well, let's hope. I read up on the surgery and-"

"You read up on my surgery?" Mark asks her as he puts his hands in his white coat pockets and directed his attention now towards the resident.

"Since it's your first time performing from what I understand to be a very cutting edge surgery, I was hoping you might need an extra set of hands."

"Fine," Mark agrees. "You can work with Doctor Grey and me."

"Doctor Grey whose been banned from the OR?" Miranda questions.

"She's on cappuccino duty," he clarifies. "Which, Doctor Grey, I'm still waiting for."

"Right away, thank you," Lexie smiles and leaves.

*

Alison was taking off her jewelry and putting her pieces (including her engagement ring) into her locker as she was preparing for her surgery. Mark would be helping her with this surgery first and then he had his next surgery he needed to do afterwards.

She then made her way into the area where she would scrub in for the surgery and Meredith was already there.

"Ready?" Alison asked the blonde resident as they were both washing their hands.

"Definitely," Meredith smiled through her mask. "Thanks for letting me be on this surgery."

"Of course. I think it's important for you resident's to see rare diagnosis and the outcome of the success in the surgery."

The door opened once they were ready and their hands being prepped for the gloves, Mark and Derek coming in right after them. Derek was apart of this surgery as well since he needed to check her neurological

The surgery was called a posterior cranial vault distraction. She had a whole team of surgeons in the room with her. It was one of the biggest surgeries that Alison has done since she had become pregnant.

"You ready?" Alison asks everyone, wanting to give her patient, Madison, the most successful outcome.

Madison had already received some medicine to help her start to calm down and get sleepy.

"Ready," they all agree and the anesthesiologist, Doctor Adams, put the rubber mask on Madison and counted down from ten.

"Scalpel please, BokHee," Alison asks the nurse and she hands it to her as she makes the first cut.

*

Alison's surgery was successful. This time Alison had spoken with the family after the surgery instead of Clair. Since this was a very complex case, the family had wanted to be with Alison as much as they could. Clair was with them as well throughout the process leading up to the surgery, but they really valued and respected Alison.

It was now time for Mark's other surgery.

"Kathleen Patterson, a laryngectomy five years ago resulted in her ability to speak," Lexie told the group of surgeons as Kathleen was typing on her laptop. "Kathleen has undergone several surgical attempts to restore her voice in the past five years, none have been successful."

"Oh this time will. This time will," Kathleen's husband told the surgeons with a smile on his face. "We have a good feeling about this. Right honey?" He asks his wife as he then turns to her.

Instead of talking, Kathleen pulled the sticky note from her laptop that read: yes. She showed it to her husband who had a frown upon his face instead of the hopeful smile he had seconds ago. You could tell her husband really wanted this surgery for her.

"As discussed, I'll get the blood supply from your arm and the cartilage from your-" He began to finish but stopped when Kathleen wasn't paying attention to him and was still typing on her laptop.

"Kathleen?" Her husband called out to his wife and tried again when she didn't look up. "Honey? Honey? You can talk to me," the husband tells Mark when she stops paying attention.

"I'll get the skin and blood supply from the cartilage from her own nose to construct a makeshift speaking tube which will become her new voice box," Mark tells the husband.

"You should be aware there's a chance that the procedure might not work," Miranda warns him.

"He's clear on that," Mark tells her, not sure why she had to bring this up. He had already discussed all of this with Kathleen and her husband prior to her surgery date. "I'm just reminding him not to get his hopes up."

Mark gives her a look but decides not to respond to her and then looks to the husband.

"Any other questions I can answer?" Mark asks.

"Kathleen? Honey?" Her husband asks his wife who holds up a sticky note that reads: no.

This surgery couldn't come fast enough, her husband thought.

Mark began explaining into more detail to her husband where he would take the cartilage from in order to give her the voice box. Alison was so incredibly proud of her fiancé for taking on this case and doing more surgeries that were unique. Besides, it was also good for him to keep up with his knowledge in his field of study.

"IT WASN'T MY FAULT. I told John and those guys to meet us," one sister yelled as Meredith and Sadie made their way into ER.

"I SAID I WOULD DO IT THAT WAY YOU COULD DRIVE," the younger sister yelled back, just as frustrated. "I'm telling mom!"

"I'LL KILL YOU," the older sister yelled.

"Girls if you could calm down," Owen said to them as Alex checked over the older sister's vital signs.

"TELL HER!" The older sister yelled to the surgeon.

"SHUT UP!" The younger sister yelled back.

"Can someone page Doctor Anderson down here?" Owen asked to anyone who was listening and Sadie suddenly began to be very nervous at the fact that the blonde surgeon was now coming down here.

"Why is she needing to be down here?" Sadie asked him and he looked at her with a blank stare.

"She's pediatrics..." he told her almost as if it were common knowledge around there at Seattle Grace.

"Sisters," Callie began to say to Meredith as she helped the younger one. "Sixteen and fifteen. Crashed her dad's car and that's all we know since they won't stop screaming at each other. We need your names. Now!" Callie said to them.

"Don't you tell her," the older sister said with frustration to her younger sister. "Don't you dare tell her!"

"Her name is Holly Anderson. She was driving and texting while driving," the younger sister yelled as she turned to look at her then turned to look back at the doctors. "Is there a police officer here? I would like to press charges!"

"YOU SUCK UP!" Holly yelled at her sister. "YOU SUCK UP ASS FACE!"

"Okay, I need your number so that we can call your parents," Callie told them sternly.

"Here," the younger sister said as she grabbed her phone and pulled up the phone number. "I speed dialed my dad," and handed Callie her phone.

"YOUR SUCH A BITCH!" Holly yelled as Callie was calling the dad.

"No you are," the younger one said.

"Make it stop," Owen said to Alex.

"SHUT UP," Alex yelled to the both of the girls.

They were quiet for a minute and Owen finally let out a sigh of relief and Sadie was surprised but then the younger one opened her mouth again.

"YOU ARE SO DEAD WHEN MOM AND DAD SHOW UP," she yelled at her older sister. "The doctors are just going to have to save you."

"I hate you," Holly told her sister and the surgeons looked at each other with the same annoyed expression.

"I hate you more," the younger one said.

"I hate you both," Callie said quieter and Owen looked at her and nodded his head in agreement.

*

"Hey, what's going on here?" Alison asked Callie as she made it to the ER room.

Thank God an expert with teenagers was here. Callie wasn't sure how much more of this she could take.

"Hey Emma, I'm going to have to check your x-rays, but I think your leg's broken," Callie explains to the younger sister. "You'll be off it for a while."

"Sisters, ages sixteen and fifteen, car accident," Callie fills her in and Sadie moves around awkwardly.

"No," Emma says in shock as she lifts her head up. "I can't miss my future leaders of America conference. HOLLY!!!"

Alison made a face from the younger teenager yelling in her ear and shook her head while her and Callie were talking about the two sisters.

"Emma, I'm going to be grounded until graduation," Holly tells her.

"I was going to D.C.," Emma yelled. "I've been waiting for this for a year. Mom and dad spent two grand on my trip. They've now waisted two-grand," Emma yelled and grabbed a kleenex box to throw at her sister.

"Okay, first off, no throwing things around the hospital," Alison stated to the two sisters and took it from Holly to keep her from throwing it back at Emma. "Secondly, I am going to need to you two to pipe it down one-hundred notches so that Doctor Torres can get a cast on your leg, Emma."

"Whatever," Emma rolled her eyes and let out a huff as she crossed her arms and she put up the curtain so that she wouldn't have to see her sister. She was still pissed at her older sister for doing this to her.

Alison wondered why Doctor Hunt needed her here. Even though the two girls were a handful, there vital signs checked out good and they had no other injuries besides the one external ones.

"If you need any help with anything, page me," Alison told Meredith who nodded her head and the blonde surgeon left.

*

"Listen, I've been here, lots," Sadie tells Holly. "Your dad won't be as pissed as he will just be happy that you're here."

"He'll kill me. Take away everything," Holly tells her as Alex comes in and shines the light in Holly's eyes.

"How long have her eyes been like that?" Alex asked Sadie.

"Her eyes? What?"

"Page Shepherd. Tell him she might have a Basilar skull fracture. Let's get her up to CT now!" Alex yelled. "Page Doctor Anderson too. She'll want to know about this."

"I didn't see, I'm sorry," Sadie tells Alex as he prepares Holly's bed to go mobile.

"You can do scut.  I'll call you when she needs another pep talk," Alex says harshly.

"Where is she going?" Emma asks Meredith and Callie.

"Just to run a few tests," Meredith tells her.

"Good.  Get her out of her here!  Take her away!  I HOPE YOU DIE!" Emma yells out to her sister and the two surgeons look at her in shock.

*

"It's the hemopericardium," Derek commented as they looked at the scan that pulled up on the computer screen.  "Let cardio know."

"Hey, I've got a future leader outside," Meredith said as she came into the room.  "She needs a CT."

"Hey uh," Derek began.

"Oh, I'm not mad at you for not voting for me," Meredith told her boyfriend and Alison did a little laugh but covered it up and began talking to Alex.

"Good job on spotting it, Karev.  And for having Derek and I paged."

"It would have looked like you were playing favorites," Meredith tells Derek.

"Good.  You deserve it and Cristina knows it.  Even if you two are fighting," Derek tells her and Alison rolls her eyes.

"You and Yang are fighting?" Alex let out a small laugh.

"Were not fighting.  Fought," Meredith corrected him.  "Past tense."

"How bad is it?" Alex asked her.  "Real bad?"

Just then they heard the machine going off which alerted Derek and Alison.

"She's crashing," Alison stated to the group and rushed out of the room with Derek behind her along with Alex and Meredith.

Derek had alerted the hospital of Code Blue.  Derek was looking her over and told Alex to let the OR room they were needing one open and Alison was listening to her heart.

"WHAT HAPPENED TO HER?" Emma yelled at the doctors wanting answers.  "HOLLY?  HOLLY?  HOLLY!  WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY SISTER?"

"Close the door, Grey," Alison told the resident as she took her stethoscope and put them back in.

*

"Be objective, Doctor Yang," Derek told Cristina as they were in the OR room, working on Holly.  "Consider accomplishments, achievements, look for the standouts.  Right now let's see what kind of stand out Doctor Karev proves himself to be when I ask him to sew the graft."

"Really?" Alex asks and Alison thinks it's unbelievable that he's talking about the solo surgery when they are trying to save this young girl's life.

"Absolutely," Derek moves positions and allows Alex to take his spot.  "Doctor Yang?  Let's see if Doctor Karev's skills are up to par for the solo."

"System," Doctor Dixon steps in which startled them.  "Devise a system.  Rank everyone accordingly, that's all.  Thank you."

Suddenly, the machines started beeping which alerted all the surgeon's.

"What just happened?" Alex asked, freaking out.  "Her brain's changing color."

"Get out of the way," Alison tells him as Derek comes into his old position.

"She's hemorrhaging," Derek alerted them.

"What did I do?  What did I do?" Alex asked the others as Derek went in and Alison helped him.

*

"Okay, okay," Callie said secretly to Mark as they walked through the hallways of the hospital.  "So the new intern, Meredith's friend."

"Psycho with no appendix who came onto me?" Mark asked.

"Yeah, we talked.  I mean she came and talked to me but it was like more than that, you know?  A guy looks at you a certain way you just know.  But this whole girl thing is so confusing," Callie says frustrated.

"Well was their touching?" Mark asked.

"No," Callie said.

"Was their playing with the hair?"

"No."

"Was their licking of the lips?" He questioned.

"Oh my God," Callie said as realization hit her.  "I made it up because I'm lonely and depressed and desperate for attention.  For a hot new intern."

"Crazy new intern," Mark muttered.

"Crazy hot new intern," Callie said.

"No!  The hot ones are the ones that cause trouble.  The ones that distract you from realizing your true potential.  You need to focus on the medicine.  Take all that pent up sexual energy waste thinking about hot naked available interns and put it back in your genius.  Your godliness.  That's hot," he says to Callie and she closes her eyes and puts her hands in a prayer position.

"She smiled," Callie had a smile on her face as she swayed side to side.  "Did I mention she smiled?"

"NO HOT INTERNS," he yelled at her.

"It's easy for you to say," Callie whines once she realizes the fact that he's not on the same team as her and playfully hits his arm.  "Your engaged!  You can get some anytime you want."

"I haven't had sex in two weeks," he lets out a sigh.

"Two weeks?" Callie's eyes widened.

"Ali's not feeling it.  Her legs are cramped and her ankles are swollen.  Said she's not in the mood."

"Damn," Callie lets out a small laugh.  "I feel for you."

*

"And then we will insert the newly constructed tube between her trachea and esophagus," Mark explains to Miranda and Lexie.  "Like that," he shows them on the computer.

"So this valve right here flips open when she -"

"Your in my space," Mark says with frustration and Miranda is shocked by the outburst.  But what she didn't know was that Mark thought Lexie was hitting on her earlier and it made things awkward for the resident.  Especially since Lexie was good friends with Alison.  "Just back up!  Back the hell up!" He yelled and Lexie did as told.  "Doctor Bailey will you please find Doctor Grey something to do other than interfere?"

"Uh, Doctor Grey, finish prepping Mrs. Patterson for surgery," the resident tells Lexie and she nods her head and leaves and Miranda looks at Mark with a suspicious look on her face.

"She was in my space," he says freaking out.

*

The monitors kept beeping which meant that Holly had flatlined.

"Doctor Shepherd -" Alex began and the surgeons were all still as they took in the fact that they lost a patient.

It was rare for Alison to lose a patient.  But for Derek, it seemed as though it was something he endured a lot and Alison knew this.  It didn't mean it didn't hurt any less though.  She was only sixteen.

"A carotid dissection," Derek explains to the resident.  "Nothing we could have done."

"So we can't just-" Alex began but Doctor Dixon answered this time.

"She had a massive CVA.  The blood supply to her brain was cut off and cannot be restored.  So even though Doctor Shepherd was able to fix the hole in her brain that allowed the brain tissue to leak through her nose the subsequent carotid dissection has caused loss of her cerebral function.  You do understand that?" Doctor Dixon asked Alex and Alison tried not paying attention to the insensitivity that the surgeon was displaying because she knew that Doctor Dixon had Asperger's, but could she have not realized that not all of them were like her?

"She's brain dead.  I get it," Alex says to her.

"She's only sixteen," Doctor Dixon says and the doctors agreed silently and there was a moment silent before she spoke up again.  "That's good news," she says which startles the surgeon's.  "She will be an excellent candidate for organ donation.  Excellent candidate.  Excellent organ's," and suddenly at that comment Alison's eyes start welling up with tears and she asks for a nurse to remove her gear so that she can get out of there.

Doctor Dixon looks at the blonde pediatric surgeon with curiosity as Derek goes to speak softly to his person.

"Are you okay?" He asks her quietly.

"I- I need to get out of here Derek," she tells him as a scrub nurse removes her bloodied gloves.  "I have to."

"Take all the time you need," he tells her and she looks into those deep ocean blue eyes and let out a shaky breath.

He knew that she was thinking about her unborn baby and that she needed time to herself.  She nodded her head and left as she made sure to scrub her hands clean and take off her mask, throwing it away in the process.

"Why can't people just leave their feelings out of it?" Doctor Dixon asked no one in particular.

"Because she's pregnant!" Derek raised his voice at the cardiologist.  "She's pregnant and she feels responsible for the death in Holly.  And I know all she's thinking about right now is her baby."

*

"Dude," Alex comes up to Cristina privately in the women's bathroom.  "You were robbed.  You got screwed by politics.  The chief - he needed a scape goat.  It's so unfair," he tells her but then he starts laughing slightly and smiles.  "I'm sorry.  I can't do this.  I can't do this.  I can kiss ass when I have to but not yours.  Below the knee amputation - make a transfer incision at the mid shaft of the tibia," he then went onto explain further what he would do for the knee amputation.

Once he finished he left, leaving Cristina in her thoughts.

*

"I hope you didn't page me to help you pass out cough drops," Alex told George.  "Cause it ain't gonna happen."

"Where's Izzie?" George asks him.

"How should I know?  I thought she was here."

"She's avoiding me.  She won't answer my pages."

"So what do you want me to do about it?" Alex asked him.

"Well you guys are together now, right?" George asks him.  "So why don't you talk to her and find out why she couldn't care less about her own clinic?"

"Look you're just pissed because she's not here because you couldn't handle a few cases of the flu," Alex said to him.

"Something's wrong Alex," George finally said.  "You need to talk to her.  She won't talk to me."

"Don't ever talk about Izzie to me again," Alex told him and then left.  Little did he know that those words would haunt him.

*

"You okay?" Derek asked his person in concern as she was rubbing her bump and eating a Crumbl cookie with a sad look on her face.

"Do I look okay?" She asked as she looked up at him and he could see the black mascara teared streaks that were on her face.

He looked through some drawers in a cabinet and pulled out some makeup wipes and gently wiped them from her face.  She hardly ever wore foundation to work and today was thankfully not one of those days.  She looked as good as new but you could still see that her hazel eyes held sadness in them.

"How do you do it?" Alison asked him as he threw away the used makeup wipe and grabbed an Oreo Crumbl cookie for himself while Alison was eating the Churro cookie.

He knew what she was referring to.

"It's hard, I won't lie," Derek told her, taking a bite of his cookie.  "I feel bad about it first because that was someone's life you couldn't save," he said and she started crying again as tears were streaming down her face and she wiped them away with the back of her hand.  "But then I try to learn from those mistakes.  Go over what could have been differently and if I can - I try to save the next person who has the same problem.  There's just some things that are out of your control."

"I know," she nodded her head.  "It's just - she was sixteen, Derek!"

"I know, come here," he opened up his arms and she went in and hugged him.  He kissed the side of her head and held his best friend.

"Love you, Der," she told him.

"Love you too, Ali," he told her back.

*

"Your a uh, very eager student, Doctor Bailey," Mark said to Miranda as she looked over his shoulder at his work.  "Very thorough."

"Any way I can be of service," she told him honestly.

"I'm not sorry," Sadie told Lexie from up in the gallery.

"What?" Lexie asked.

"For what we did.  It was extreme maybe stupid.  But this program, I mean you should be down in that OR not up here in the nose bleed's.  And I shouldn't be spending my entire day transcribing all of Karev's charts because his handwriting's illegible," Sadie tells her and Lexie smiles at that comment.  "And how's it teaching so they can call me crazy Sadie and God knows whatever else.  But that doesn't change the fact that this program is broken.  When the only time they bother with us is when they think they can get us in bed."

"That's not true," Lexie disagreed with the blonde.  "Doctor Sloan took the time to teach me today and that was not about sex."

"He likes you," Sadie smiled and laughed at her oblivion.

"Who?  Doctor Sloan?  No way!  He's engaged to my good friend with a baby on the way..."

"He seems like a womanizer to me.  Or he used to be.  But once a womanizer always a womanizer," Sadie tells Lexie.

"He used to be one.  Not anymore."

"Is he cutting into her throat?" She asked leaning forward slightly.  "Bloody hell."

"It can damage the endothelium," Mark explains to Miranda as she asks yet another question.  He was getting a little annoyed at all of her questions as it felt more like she was quizzing him like an intern and not acting like he was above her.

"Oh but don't you need to -" Miranda started to ask but Mark interrupted her.

"Doctor Bailey would you rather do Mrs. Patterson's surgery yourself?  I can leave."

"Doctor Sloan I wasn't questioning your surgical skills.  I was trying to learn.  Something exciting.  Something new.  I mean these resident's are running around fighting to the nail of the tooth for a chance to cut off a leg.  What you've done here, you've made something that was nothing and it's just thrilling.  I was just trying to learn."

"Thank you, Doctor Bailey," he tells her sincerely.  "Now would you take the flap veins and join them to the internal jugular veins?"

She excitedly moves and does as told.

*

"Hey, you okay?" Mark asked his fiancé as he walked up to her and wrapped an arm around her low back.

He had already shrugged on his black leather jacket and the look was doing all kinds of things to Alison at the moment.

"I lost a patient today," she let out in a strained voice.

"I know, baby," Mark consoled her as he pressed kisses to her temple and she closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling of his lips on her skin.  "I know.  Derek told me.  Let's get you home, yeah?"

"Yeah," she nods her head.  "I love you Mark," she told him and leaned up on her toes to press a kiss to his jawline.

"I love you more, Alison," he confessed to her.

*

"When are your parents coming here again?" Mark asked his fiancé.

"Mmm, when I get to thirty-six weeks," she tells him as she makes them handmade pizza.

Of course with hers she's chopping up little pieces of ham and pineapple on hers and loading up on the cheese.  For Mark she was making a supreme pizza with everything on it and he helped make his.

"Good," he nods his head as he pops in an olive in his mouth.  "So we still have time left for alone time," he said with a deep sexy voice that Alison loved and he slowly wrapped his strong, muscular arms around her waist as she let out a squeak not expecting the motion.

"Mark," she whined as he let out a laugh and kissed her cheek.  "Don't scare me like that!  You know I have a weak bladder right now."

"I'm sorry," he let out spluttering laughs as he tried to cover them up.  "I forgot."

"Mhmm," she said, not amused, but at the same time quickly got over it.

"So, have you spoken to little Grey yet?" Mark asks Alison as he then puts both pizza's in the oven.

Pizza was something that Alison had been craving all day and seemed to be something that she wanted everyday this week.

"No," she shakes her head and lets out a sigh.  "Mainly because I don't know what to say to her..."

"Well, don't be too hard on her," Mark tells her as he takes hold of her hand and draws her closer, her bump keeping them from getting too close.  "She meant well."

"She almost got an intern killed," Alison remarked.

"An intern you don't like," he said in a teasing voice but her facial expression was neutral which meant she wasn't amused.

"It doesn't matter, Mark," she let out a huff and drank her Diet Coke.  "It was still wrong.  I understand that they weren't really taught during their intern year but I wasn't really able to do things during my residency with Doctor Kenley.  Did I do the things they chose to do? No."

"I get it sweetheart," Mark let out a sigh.  "I do.  But try to understand where they were coming from, alright?"

"Why are you on their side?  You hate interns."

"No I don't," he began to deny.  "Okay, I used to hate them.  They're just annoying little kids eager to learn.  But I don't know, they're kind of growing on me.  Just know Lexie is probably beating herself up even more knowing who she is.  So you don't have to knock someone when they're down."

"I get it," Alison agreed with her fiancé and understood where he was coming from.  "I promise I won't be hard on her next time I see her."

"Good because she's coming over in like ten minutes," he tells her and Alison lets out a gasp.

"Mark!  When were you gonna tell me?"

"Just now," he grins.

She playfully swats his arm, kind of annoyed if she were being honest that he just brought this up now.

"Would you have agreed to have her here if I talked to you earlier?" He asked his fiancé as he raised an eyebrow, as he knew her well.

"I don't know," she raises her voice slightly but not in an angry tone.  "Maybe.  But I feel kind of blind-sided by this right now..."

"You shouldn't feel blind-sided," Mark tells her as he wraps his muscular arms around her waist and she rests her hands on his forearms.  "She's your friend."

"I know," she mutters and looks down and he brings his two fingers under her chin and tilts her head up gently and looks into her hazel eyes.  "I just never thought that she would do this.  You know?"

I know," Mark nods his head.  "But she made a mistake.  We all do.  Just be there for her, okay?" Mark asked his fiancé as he now cupped her face in his hands.

"Okay," she nodded her head in agreement and Mark interlocked their fingers together and he leaned down to press short multiple kisses to her lips as she began to giggle when they heard a knock on the door.  "Guess that means no sexy time."

"Wait, you're in the mood now?" He asks with widened eyes.

"Yeah," she bit her lip and lowed her gaze into those sexy bedroom eyes that he loved so much.  "But like you said, Lexie's coming soon.  So maybe later," she tried to move he pinned her against the counter and caged her in.

His hands still cupped her cheeks and he leaned down to her level to press his lips to hers.  Maybe if he persuaded her enough with a steamy kiss she would agree to have Lexie go home instead.  He controlled the heated kiss as he slipped his tongue in her mouth and they tangled together as her hands went up to his hair and played with the end strands as he lifted her with ease onto the counter.  Just as she was about to lift his shirt off him they heard the doorbell ring, alerting the couple again that Lexie was there.  Both of them had to slow down their breathing as they let out ragged breaths.

"She's here," Mark groaned as he murmured against her lips.  "Fuck."

"Right," Alison commented and checked the timer first on the pizza's and once she realized they were still good on time she went with Mark to the front door as he had already opened it and was talking to the intern at the door.

"Hi," Lexie smiles awkwardly (for the first ever) at her person.

"Come here," Alison lets out a small laugh and brings her in for a hug.

Lexie closed her eyes as Alison hugged her. She was grateful that at least she didn't ruin that friendship as Alison was the only person at Seattle Grace who didn't judge her for one reason or another. She was sure that Alison was maybe disappointed but at least she didn't show it. Once Lexie released herself from the hug, Alison gave the brunette a smile.

"Do you want some homemade pizza?" Alison asks Lexie.

"That sounds amazing right about now," Lexie let out a laugh as her hazel eyes sparkled.

"Good thing for you," Mark began to speak as both women looked at him.  "I already made you a pizza.  Supreme good  Or do you want cheese, something else?"

"Cheese sounds great.  Thanks."
