Soldier Boy

Bella Swan said she always hated the cold.  Any wet thing.  Then she went and married a vampire who was dead and cold.  Every time the first snow hits for some reason I always think of the Cullen family and Twilight and I haven't even watched that show in years.  The reason why I hate the snow?  I'm like Bella Swan and incredibly clumsy when it comes to the ice.  I fall at least once every winter and not to mention all of the surgeries that happen during the winter due to the ice.  Especially black ice and nighttime.

"There's a fucking winter wonderland outside," Alison exclaimed as she opened up the blinds in her apartment.

"In October?" Mark asked shocked.

"I think you're forgetting that you live in Seattle now," she let out an unattractive snort.

"Am not," he whined.  "I just hate the cold."

"You and me both.  We got to get to work though, otherwise we're gonna be late," she told her fiance as she got up from the chair and held her bump.

Mark made sure Alison was extra bundled up.  So much to the point where she felt ridiculous.  She looked at herself in her floor length mirror and started taking off her triple jackets she had on as her eyebrows scrunched together.

"I look like a stupid snow man," she muttered to herself.  "I am a surgeon.  Not a stupid snow man."

"Hey, hey, hey," Mark called out to her as he noticed what she was doing and she let out a huff as she whined a little.  "What are you doing?  You're going to get the baby cold."

"Mark," she ran her fingers through her hair.  "The baby is not going to be cold because the baby is still in my stomach," she lashed out on him, annoyed that he was going to the extreme.  It was cute at the beginning but now it was just ridiculous.

"You're right," he shook his head and snapped out of it as he helped her out of her second layer coat.  "Let's go."

"Here's this for you," Clair said handing Alison a Gingerbread Latte coffee from Starbucks.  "For good juju."

"Aw thank you," Alison thanked her.  "Addison would be proud.  Let's take a selfie with our coffee's and send it to her," she told Clair and they did just that.  "Addison wants to know what coffee we got," she asked the nurse practitioner as she read Addison's text.

"Gingerbread Latte and an Eggnog Latte for me."

Alison let Addison know through a text message and more people were walking over to the computer for the results.  The two women missed Addison like crazy but they knew that she needed this change and they were happy for her.

"How many coffee's is that for Alison today?" Mark asked Clair.

"Only one."

"Good," Mark said as he crossed his arms and Alison rolled her eyes.

"You know before we left apartment today, Mark had me dressed in three coats?  Three!"

Clair shook her head but laughed at the couple.

"Seems like something he would do.  I bet you're going to be one of those helicopter dads," Clair joked with Mark and he scoffed.  "I'm messing with you, Mark."

"I knew that," he said back, happy again.

"How is it that you two are having a baby before me again?" Derek asked as he interrupted the three.  "Actually, wait.  Don't answer that," he said knowing that it was because they had way more sex than he did and Clair laughed while Mark smirked.

"Shut up," Alison muttered as she sipped her coffee and ate her cake pop.

Alison was now twenty-five weeks pregnant, and she was definitely feeling it a bit more.  She beginning to have back pain and Mark wanted her to limit her time in the OR but she wouldn't have it.  So instead, she was promised she would take more breaks in between, especially if they were longer surgeries.  Her baby was now the size of rutabaga.

When they told her family, they were so happy for her and Mark.  Alison wondered often times, especially now that she was pregnant, how different things would be with Mark's family if they were close.  They didn't talk about it too much but she knew that his mom had passed away and that he had no relationship with his dad.

At week twelve, she and Mark had decided together to get a genetic testing.  It wasn't that they wouldn't not have the baby even if they had something wrong, but they just wanted to make sure.  Alison would be lying if she wasn't a tiny bit relieved that there wasn't.

"I bet my mom was excited when she found out you two were having a baby," Derek commented as he ate his apple and the couple looked at each other and Mark had his mouth opened.  "She doesn't know?" Derek let out a small laugh and he shook his head a bit.  "Oh this is gonna be great."

"We forgot to tell Carolyn?" Alison let out a breath as she looked up at Mark.  "Oh my God!"

"She's going to kill me."

"I can't believe I forgot about Carolyn," Alison groaned.  "I love Carolyn too and she's going to think we did this on purpose."

"It - It'll be okay," Mark tried to calm down his fiance as he wrapped his arms around her.  "We'll just tell her when she comes into town next."

"Right," Alison nodded her head, okay with the decision.

"You guys are going to be so dead," Derek let out a laugh as he took another bite of his apple.

Before the couple had time to respond, they were interrupted by Clair's voice.

"Why aren't the results up yet?" Clair complained as they were all huddled around the computer waiting for the results of the hospital rank.

"They should be up now," Alison said as Mark had an arm around her.

"Back up, you're sucking out all of my oxygen," Miranda said to Derek as he was leaned in very closely to her.

"I'm trying to see."

"It's not up yet."

"It's supposed to be posted at four," Erica said frustrated.

Alison rolled her eyes at Erica's comment.  She still wasn't speaking to her or Alex.  Alex had tried to reach out to her but she would walk the other way, whereas Erica gave up that first night.

"Hit the refresh button," Cristina told Miranda and went up to her as she tried to touch the mouse but Miranda slapped her hand away.

"I'm hitting the refresh button every ten seconds," Miranda sassed back.

"Hi," Derek greeted Meredith and they all looked at the two.

"Hi," she greeted him and they both smiled at each other.

"Is it up yet?" Mark asked Miranda and she told him no for what seemed like hundredth time.  "I bet we'll be past Hopkins."

"We're not past Hopkins," Derek told Mark.  "We're going to stay number two."

"Mayo could surge ahead and we could be three," Erica said.

"Three?" Derek asked shocked.  "Pessimist."

"Realist.  The rankings of the teaching hospitals change based on any number of things."

"I could live with three," Mark said.

"Hey," Izzie came rushing over.  "Is it up yet?"

"Okay, back up all of you!" Miranda said finally having enough.  "Stop hovering and stop speculating.  The rankings will go up when they go up.  We have no control over when they are posting.  When it is up, I will say it is up.  Until then, back up.  Shut up.  And leave me alone."

"It's up," Alison said point ing to the computer screen and everyone looks at the screen.

"Number one is Hopkins, number two is Mayo."

"Told you," Erica said.

"Three is Cleveland Clinic."

"What?" Derek asked confused.

"We moved down to five?" Cristina asked.

"No," Miranda said shocked.

"We're twelve," Alison said surprised.

"What headband are you wearing today?" Alison asked Clair, her nurse practitioner.  Clair almost always wore headbands to work whenever she had her hair pulled up and out of her face.  They were from a brand called Junk Brands.  Perfect for nurses.  This time it was blue and it had a nutcracker on it with the saying 'son of a nutcracker.'  "That is so cute!  Elf?"

"Yeah," Clair laughed.  "Kind of cheesy but its been a huge hit with the kids."

"How many do you have?"

"Probably more than a hundred," she said shrugging her shoulders.  "They're just so cute and they have so many designs and themes.  What can I say?  I can't resist."

"Your crazy," Alison said letting out a laugh and shook her head.

"You like to spend your money on makeup and skincare.  I like to spend mine on headbands," Clair commented and they both laughed.

"Can you believe how pretty it is out there?" Alison asked as she let out a sigh.

"It's gorgeous.  It reminds me of home.  Speaking of home," Clair commented as she cleared her throat.  "Do you and Mark have any plans for the holiday's?"

"Yeah," she told Clair with a small smile.  "We're going to my family's home for Christmas.  I get to see my cute little niece again which is a plus.  What about you?"

"Same.  I'm going home to Bethlehem.  Except George is coming with me."

"Aw, that's nice.  I'm glad he's your person.  You guys have like the best friendship."

"Me too," she smiled at the blonde.  "I know he hasn't really had a good Christmas since his dad passed away and I want to make it special for him."

"Well, knowing you, you will.  So do you think Lexie will tell him soon that she's madly in love with him?"

"I don't know.  Even if she did, unfortunately, I don't think he feels the same way for her as she does.  Which sucks because I love Lexie."

"She was annoying at first but sweet once you get to know her," Alison said and Clair agreed.

-

It's rare.  And hard to see.  But it's the most dangerous type of ice because of how well it blends with the street color.  It's like it likes to trick us.  To play games with us.

-

"It's humiliating," Mark said with a scoff as he and Derek were walking together.  "Twelve?  You're the best neurosurgeon in the country.  In the world," he exclaimed.  "Don't you want to say anything nice about me?"

"Alison looks very cute pregnant."

"That's not about me," Mark whined.

"Technically it is.  It is your kid she's carrying," he told Mark but then he saw the look he gave him.  "Okay fine, you're the best plastics guy at Seattle Grace."

"Nice.  Really nice."

"Don't force me to praise you," Derek said jokingly.  "Hey Rose," he greeted the brunette nurse who ignored him and looked at Doctor Sloan instead.

"Hello Doctor Sloan."

"She took it so well at the beginning.  I was hoping we would at least be civilized.  You know she's working my OR."

"Civilized is out.  It's gone.  A trail of fairy dust.  Now she's got delayed rage."

"Delayed rage?"

"Yeah, you know.  Before she was putting on a brave face.  Now she's had time to think and now she hates your guts.  You have to break up with her."

"What's the point?  I already did."

"You did it personally, now you have to do it professionally.  Besides, if you fire her from your services, I know Alison would really love having her back.  She misses her.  Good luck with that."

"I still can't believe you got my person pregnant," Derek shook his head at Mark.

"Your still going to be one of the godfather's though, right?"

"It's like you don't know me at all - wait, one of them?  As in there's more?"

"Well, she has a few others to ask but she's still on the fence about."

"What about her brothers?" Derek asked.

"They're going to stay our son's uncles.  She didn't want to change their title and they were happy with it," Mark tells Derek as they walk.

Richard was looking out at the snow when Erica came up to him and he turned to her.

"I'd like a list.  From you.  On ways that I can improve," she tells him.

"Not right now," he dismisses her.

"Richard, you told me that I'm a bad teacher.  And basically a bad coworker.  Now we're number twelve and I don't like to be number twelve, so I'd like a list."

"Not right now," he tells her and starts to walk off when she calls out to him again.

"But if there are ways that I can improve.  Ways that I can help the program or gain its ranking -"

"It's snowing.  You know what happens when it's nighttime and it's snowing?  And the temperature is hovering right around thirty-two degrees?"

"No," she shakes her head.

"The snow begins to melt.  And then it freezes again.  Creating black ice.  The deadliest kind of ice because it's invisible to drivers.  That would usually mean that our ER would fill up, but Mercy West is a number one level trauma center and we're not.  Which means their ER gets the trauma while we get their cast off's, which pisses me off.  So when I say not now what I mean is - not right now," he raises his voice to the attending and they both turn to leave but then Erica notices Callie and it becomes awkward real fast.  Callie put the newspaper up to her face and left.

*

"O'Malley here is going to suture your cuts and then you are all set," Callie tells the patient who was on her phone, trying to reach her husband, and she turns to look at him.  "You ladies are lucky that you didn't get more serious injuries."

"What kind of doctor are you?  You're young," the woman pointed out.

"I'm an intern," he tells her.

"Interns don't touch the face.  The plastic surgeon touches the face."

"What's happening?" Her friend asks confused.  "Where am I?"

"We were in an accident," the other friend answers as they are also confused why this is still happening.  "You're okay.  We're all going to be fine."

*

"Whose the hot military guy?" Alison asked with her arms crossed over her bump and Cristina looked at her shocked.

"Hey no, no, no," she let out a scoff.  "You have McSteamy.  You don't get hot military guy.  You know he helped that guy by using a pen for a trach?"

"Like I said - hot," Alison said and walked up to him to introduce herself as Cristina and Clair watched.  "Hi, I'm Doctor Anderson," she greeted the soldier boy and he shook her hand.  "I heard you saved a guy's life by using a pen for a trach?"

"Nice to meet you.  I'm Owen Hunt.  Doctor Owen Hunt.  I just knew I needed use whatever was on me.  I cleaned it before I used on him," he reassured her and she looked starstruck.

"Very impressive," Alison replied with a smile.  "How did you learn how to do that?"

"Well, out in Iraq..."

They seemed to be hitting off as her fiance came up and didn't like what he was seeing.

"What the hell is she doing talking to that guy for?" Mark asked, as he crossed his arms as the two women looked at each other.

"Talking?" Clair asked.

"Yeah, I don't like it.  Or him," he shook his head and went up to his fiance and wrapped an arm around her, who seemed startled at first but then relaxed when she realized it was her fiance.

"This is going to be fun," Clair comments and Cristina has a big smile on her face.

"So much fun."

*

"Damnit," Mark shouted as he came through the door to Alison's apartment and kicked the door later that night.

"Mark?" Alison called out his name and emerged as she had a slight waddle to her step.  Her eyebrows were furrowed in concern as she was wearing one of his shirts and a pair of cozy Lulu Lemon lounge pants.  You okay?"

"No," he shakes his head.  "No, I'm not okay.  My patient today - can no longer talk."

Instead of saying anything, she wraps her arms around him, the best she can with her bump slightly in the way, as he lays his head in the crook of her neck.

*

"Rose," Derek whispers quietly to his ex-girlfriend who was writing on the surgery board.  "Please look at me.  If you are going to be like this you can't be in my OR."

Finally she closes the marker and turns to look at him with a huff and her hands on her hips.

"Okay, there's no easy way to say this.  I've been acting this way because I'm carrying your child, Derek," she tells him seriously and he looks at her as he doesn't know what to say.  "Ha!  Gotcha," she told him and started laughing as he let out a noise."

"This is your idea of a joke?"

"Oh please, you deserve it.  Who do you think you are?  If you're going to keep being this way you can't be in my OR," she said, mocking him.

"You should transfer to a different specialty."

"You should transfer to a different specialty," she sasses back.

"I'm a neurosurgeon."

"You should have thought about that while repeatedly reassuring me you were over your ex," she tells him and walks away.  "See you in the OR.  I'm not going anywhere."

Rewatching Grey's has actually made me realize how much I did actually love Izzie's character, especially how she was as a friend and a surgeon to her patients.  Regardless of what happened with Denny and sleeping with George.  No one can say she didn't care.  Which is why I am changing my character's thoughts on her as well.

Also I am updating my Jackson Avery fanfic now and also posting a new Alex Karev fanfic too this week because there are hardly any on here.  It's going to be called December because it has to do with Taylor Swift's song.  still trying decide if i want her to be in alex's year or lexie's... thoughts?
