Remembrance of Prom's Past

Prom.  We somehow all have memorable prom experiences.  For many people it's a right of passage.  A coming of age.  We love to go shopping with friends and find the perfect prom dress and go with a hot date.  To get our hair, makeup and nails done for the night and have the date put on a corsage on our wrists.  Go out to dinner with the group and dance the night away without a care in the world.  Too bad real life wasn't like that.

-

"Denny got a heart?" Alison asked with a smile on her face as Bailey told her the good news.

"Yes, but -"

"And he's okay?"

"Yes -"

"So what's there to be worried about?  Burke's surgery went great and Denny is alive.  All is well."

"Come in here with me, now," Bailey grabbed her wrist and brought her into one of the closet rooms.

"Woah, Bailey, what the hell is going on?"

"Just shut up and listen okay blondie?  What I am about to tell is completely confidential.  You cannot tell anyone what I am about to tell you including Derek.  This does not leave this room.  Got that?"

"Yes," Alison gulped.

Alison would never admit it but sometimes Bailey scared the shit out of her.  When she first started working with Bailey - she thought it was good.  It turned her into the determined young doctor she is today.  To never take no for an answer and to always stand up for what she believed in.  But now?  She wasn't sure if what Bailey was about to tell her was good or bad. . .

"Good," Bailey took a deep breath then let it out.  Denny did not get the heart out of sheer luck from being on the list."

Alison's eyebrows furrowed as she listened to the doctor explain to her what happened.  She stayed silent.  Let Miranda tell her everything so that she received all the facts.  Miranda had to tell someone though.  Otherwise this secret was eating her alive.  She didn't know how she could live with herself if she didn't tell someone.

"Holy shit," Alison exclaimed.  "Shit, shit, shit.  Poor Denny."

"Poor Denny?" Bailey exclaimed as she slapped the girls arm annoyed that it seemed like she didn't fully understand it.  "Poor Denny?  That's all you have to say about that?"

"Yes, Bailey, poor Denny.  I'm saying that because he was practically live bait against his will.  From what it seems like Izzie practically held him and the other interns hostage.  He had no choice in the matter especially when the interns felt as though they couldn't go to any of us doctors.  That Izzie felt like that was the last resort.  And you know what - I hope that Izzie does in fact get kicked out of the program because what she did was wrong.  She put a patient's life at risk just so that he could get a new heart.  I mean I'm glad that he got a new heart and all but not when it was done in a wrong way."

"Look," Bailey made some hand motions with her hands as she began talking.  "Just because I helped them - doesn't mean I agreed with it either.  But once it was done it was too late.  All we can hope now is that Denny makes it through the night until he's in the clear.  Until then Chief Webber brought the interns in for questioning."

"Good," Alison nodded her head.  "That's good.  In the mean time, I think I know who can help plan the prom for the chief's niece," she told the other doctor with a mischievous grin on her face.

Bailey smiled at the blonde doctor and followed her out of the room as Alison walked to O'Malley and Karev.

"Guys, these are Camille's friends - Claire and Natalie.  She had to unfortunately have her high school prom cut short due to being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  So with the help of her best friends we are going to give her the best damn prom she has ever seen.  Isn't that right girls?"

"Right," they nodded their heads with a smirk on their face.  "We're her very best friends in the whole wide world."

"And girls who exactly is Camille Travis?" Bailey asked the two.

"The chief of surgeries niece."

"Have fun planning and I know you'll do everything you can to make this the best prom ever," the blonde told the interns with a smirk at the end as she and Bailey left.  Just as they round the corner Bailey turned around to look at the interns and gave the four interns a look which made them gulp.

"Hey, your up," she greeted the heart patient with a smile.

"I am," Denny grinned at the blonde.

"How does it feel?"

"Honestly, it feels great."

"Everything okay?  Your vitals and everything?"

"Everything checked out great when Doctor Bailey came in.  And guess what?"

"What?" She asked with anticipation.

"I proposed to Izzie."

"Shut up!  You did not!"

"I did," he nodded his head with a proud smile as his eyes had a sort of twinkle in his eyes.

"Well, you can't just leave me hanging," she joked making the patient laugh.  "What did she say?"

"Yes."

"I- I'm really happy for y-you," she said with tears forming in her eyes.

"Thank you," he said with a sense a pride but then it faltered.  "You know, don't you?"

"Yeah," she nodded her head.  "I do."

"And you don't hate me?"

"Denny, I could never hate you," she tells him as she puts her cold hands in her pockets.  "Do I wish everything could have been handled differently?  Yes, I do," she tells him as she tucks a strand of her blond hair that fell behind her ear.  "But if at the end of the day you are healthy and if she loves you for you.  Then I am happy for you."

"Thank you," he gave her a charming smile.

She could see why Izzie fell in love with him.  She could see how similar they were personality wise.  But how Izzie did it was unforgivable.  And for that reason she could not be happy for Izzie but was very glad that Denny was alive and well.

"Are you having any complications?"

"Maybe some discomfort but the feeling of actually having a good working heart after not having one for years - outweighs it completely."

Hearing Denny say that almost made some tears cloud Alison's blue eyes.

"Well," she cleared her throat.  "I am going to let you rest.  You'll need lots of it these next couple of days to get your energy back but I have to go home and get ready.  I have a prom to attend."

"Alright, doctor," he smiled at the young blonde.  "I'm sure you'll look beautiful.  Got a hot date?"

"Thank you, Denny," she smiled warmly at the patient.  "I do actually.  How about I bring him up here before we head in to meet you?  Would that be okay?"

"That would.  Have a good night for me," he winked at her making her laugh.

"I will.  See you later, Denny.  And gets lots of rest!"

Alison had spent the afternoon at the salon as they had curled her hair in soft curls in a half up half down hair style with a braid in the back.  She had bought her dress the week prior along with a sheer light pink shawl.  Alison had decided to do her own makeup going a bit heavy wanting it to look better than her normal work day makeup which consisted of her eyebrows filled in, eyeliner and mascara.  It was nice for work but not for the prom.

She had taken a shower earlier to get rid of her slight sweat from earlier due to work and now felt more herself as she looked in the long length mirror.  Smiling as she looked at her olive green dress and then put on her nude colored high heels just as she heard a knock at the door.

Gathering her wristlet wallet which also held her house key and cellphone, she opened up the door to find the handsome lawyer dressed in a black and white tuxedo.  He had his beard trimmed slightly and his brown hair was combed back emphasizing his long eyelashes.

"Wow," he blinked as he looked at the peds doctor.  "You look stunning."

"Thank you," she smiled.  "You look handsome."

"Thanks," he smiled back at her.  "Should we get going?"

"Yeah."

They had just arrived at the hospital and Alison had mentioned to Anthony that she wanted him to meet a patient that was there right now.  She explained to Anthony that he had just received a heart transplant surgery and was doing great.

Anthony was looking forward to meeting this patient, knowing the hospital takes great care of their patients.

"Mind if we come in?" Alison smiled at Denny and he gave her a big smile back.

"Please.  I was beginning to wonder if you forgot about me," he teased back.

"I would never forget about you.  Denny this is-"

"The lawyer.  Anthony, right?"

"Yeah," he laughs and shakes Denny's hand.  "It's nice to meet you.  I've heard a lot about you."

"I hope all good things."

"Of course.  So you're feeling good?"

"As good as new.  Almost forgot what it felt like to feel healthy again.  You guys have a good time for me tonight, alright?"

"We will, Denny, thank you.  I'm going to give you a hug," the blonde doctor smiled at the patient to which he opened his arms wide, welcoming her.

Alison also made a surprise visit to Doctor Burke, knowing he was down about his hand.  She felt bad for him.  There was nothing he could have done.  He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time which unfortunately just so happened to be right outside the ER room of the hospital.

"Wendy Darling," he smiled at the blonde as she paid him a visit with a surprise guest.  He was grateful for the visits.  "Whose this?"

"This is Anthony.  My date for the prom.  Anthony this is Doctor Burke."

She didn't mention that he was the best heart surgeon they have, mainly because she didn't want to hurt his feelings.  She wasn't sure if or when he would be able to perform surgery again as he was having trouble with the shakiness of his hand at certain times.  Anthony and Doctor Burke got along great and really enjoyed each other's company, especially after Anthony told him that he runs triathlon's a lot.  Anthony promised the doctor that he would go running with him and the intern George once he was feeling better and out of recovery.

"Seems like your just charming everyone tonight," Alison told her date as she held onto her bicep with a smile as they made their way to the dance.

"Everyone that I've met so far is great," he beamed about her coworkers and patient Denny, who he met.

The area where the dance was being held was beautiful.  Alison had to congratulate the interns on a great job when she saw them next.  Black and white was decorations with balloons and cut out moons and stars along with swirls adorned the ceiling.

"Hey Alison," Addison greeted the young blonde doctor with a welcoming smile.  "You look beautiful."

"Thank you.  You look gorgeous and Derek, you look handsome."

"Thank you.  You must be Anthony," Derek shakes his hand.  "I've been looking forward to meeting you."

"You as well.  Addison has told me great things about you.  Thanks for looking out for Alison at work too."

"Oh she doesn't need looking out for.  She's my best friend.  She's one of the best doctors for little kids."

It was true that she was.  This was where she was different from Addison.  Addison mainly worked with the mothers and little babies but Alison worked with the older kids as well as working with mothers and little babies.

The couple danced to a few songs as they enjoyed their night.  It felt like minutes but ended up being hours later when the couple went outside to cool off and were met with Derek, Addison and Finn who was Meredith's date.

"Doctor Shepherd or Doctor Anderson have either of you seen any of the interns?  Izzie Stevens in particular," Richard asked the two doctors as Bailey was with him.

"No, I haven't," Alison shook her head as she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and Derek did the same, making the four adults confused about what was going on.

Just then Addison sees the interns walking in and looking down.  Alison could feel her heart beating fast out of her chest as she didn't have a good feeling about what was happening.

"Richard, they're here," Addison pointed out.

"It was me," Izzie told Richard.  "I cut his lvad wire.  I did it and no one helped me.  And now, I thought I was a surgeon but I can't.  I thought I was a surgeon but I am not.  So I quit."

"Izzie," Bailey and Alison called out to the surgeon but she kept on walking.

"Well, I guess that put an end to tonight," Addison smiled sadly at everyone."

"Yeah, yeah I guess it does," Richard agreed and walked away.

That night was a big step in their relationship.  Anthony introduced Alison to his son Bentley after he had paid his babysitter and they got along great.  They laughed and settled down with watching Peter Pan.  Alison ended up telling him why Doctor Burke and the majority of the nurses and doctors called her Wendy Darling and mentioned the other nicknames they have for her.  He loved seeing the relationship already develop between Alison and his son and couldn't find a better way to end their night than right here.

Just one night can either bring people together or tear them apart.  I don't know why bad things happen to good people but I have to believe that some good will come out of it.  Sadness can be turned to happiness.  Tears wiped away and a smile graced someone's face.  There will come a day when the pain in our chest from losing a loved one isn't so unbearable that eventually becomes a dull ache and then becomes nothing more than a memory.
