In an Instant
There's always those instances where we have to make choices in life. The problem with instances is that we don't always know if the choice we make is the right one. It's on a whim. And the problem with on a whim choices is they can either make or break you.

"What do you think is up with her?" Grey asked Yang as they were looking at Callie with distaste.
"I'm not sure but she must be on something if she's into O'Malley," Cristina commented as the two girls snickered.
"You know for people who say they are friends with O'Malley you two sure do a lot of shit talking on him. As for Callie leave her the hell alone alright? She's one of the best ortho doctors we got so if you want to make up rumors you should be able to back up your shit with facts. Am I clear?" Alison asked the blonde and brunette.
"Crystal," Meredith told her with smirk.
Alison looked up as she saw the Head of Neonatal and OB/GYN Surgery doctor walking through the hallways of the hospital frantically as she tried wiping something off her coat muttering something about bad sex.
"I need an intern. Now," Addison said looking at the three.
"I'm with Bailey," Meredith told her and headed out fast.
"I'm with Burke," Cristina told her disappearing as well and all that was left was Alex.
"Karev?"
"I don't do vagina. Not as a doctor anyway."
"Oh, back talk. You know what, you just bought yourself a case," she handed him a patients file to which Alison smirked at as Addison started to walk away.
"Anderson, walk with me," she barked as she was already at the end of the hallway to which Alison obeyed and followed her.
"So, what's going on with our patient?" Alison asked Addison as they were walking briskly and she was going over her chart.
She liked to know everything about her patients - their family history, what they have gone through medically, and if they were allergic to any medication or anything else. She liked to be prepared and know what to expect before meeting them. To some it might come off as odd but the patients appreciated it, knowing that she cared enough about them to actually read their charts before meeting them.
"Patient's name is Rose Ward. She is due to give birth," Alison read off her patient's chart as Karev followed behind the two doctors. "It says here she already has six children? What are they trying to do? Make a baseball team?" Alison asked under her breath making Karev snort.
"Do you have something you would like to share with the rest of the team?" Addison stopped and turned to Alex looking him up and down and he stayed quiet with a straight face. "Good, I didn't think so."
Alison rolled her eyes at the brunette as they made their way in their patient's room. Alex Karev went to go check on the patient's lab results to see if they were ready.
"Hello, Ward's," Addison greets her patient as she sits in the hospital bed and her husband was tending to their children. "We are just waiting on your labs. How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling large. Large and cow like," Rose explains making Addison and Alison smile as her young boy looks up at her in shock.
"Cow?"
"Mommy is a cow," Rose tells her son as Alison looks at their interaction.
Alison always felt sentimental around children - loved having worked with them for as long as she could remember.
"Can I have a talk with the doctor?" Rose asked her husband and he offered the kids ice-cream.
Alex Karev then came back in as the three doctors stood next to the patient.
"Rose?" Alison spoke to her patient trying to get her attention.
"Sorry," Rose lets out a sigh. "I'm so tired."
"Six kids, thirty-eight weeks pregnant," Doctor Addison says as she crosses her arms. "Any saint would be tired."
"Well, I'm no saint," Rose starts to get emotional as Alison hands her a tissue. "This baby, Joseph, Doctor Shepherd I need him to be my last. I really seem to be the most fertile woman on the planet."
"Your decisions do have alternative measures that you could take," Addison says back.
"Have you talked to your husband about this?" Alison asked the patient not liking where this was going.
"Oh no," Rose shakes her head. "He can never know. See, he would get so mad if I even mentioned using a condom and birth control? Well, the minute he would see them he would flush them down the toilet. It would be pointless, don't you see? What I mean is today during the c-section, I need you two to tube my ties and I need you to do it without my husband ever knowing."
"Rose, you're an adult. He's your husband," Addison starts by saying. "He's not your legal guardian. Telling him would be entirely up to you."
"If you charge my insurance he would see it. Any bill you would send he would see. I've been saving for this and I can pay. In privately."
Alison and Karev share a look that they both think this is wrong by all counts. Alison couldn't believe that the patient was asking them to do this.
"So you are saying you want me to do the surgery and leave no record of it?" Addison asked making sure she understood correctly.
"Mrs. Ward if you are being abused we have people you can talk to," Alex told the mother to which she subtly laughed at the accusation.
"Chris - he's the opposite of abusive," Rose told Alex.
"If we pull up your medical records we aren't going to find a bunch of old broken bones?"
"If you pull up my medical records you are going to find three natural child births, three c-sections and two hospital stays for exhaustion and one for dehydration. I was so busy chasing my kids I forgot to take care of myself. I think God understands what I'm going through and I think God will forgive me. The pope says no to birth control."
"Well, God might forgive you but your husband might not."
"No offense, but you don't need our help. Your husband's not abusing you. You don't get to lie to him and then blame it on the pope."
"Doctor Shepherd closed the patients door as she said both Karev and Anderson's name.
"What is it, Anderson?"
"You can't seriously be considering this," Alison starts by saying as she notices there are no other doctors roaming the halls.
"This is what our patient wants. We focus on the patient and what they want. Not their family members."
"Well you would know something about lying and cheating wouldn't you, Doctor Shepherd? Considering you cheated on Derek."
Alison was never one to put up with cheaters in relationships. She never understood cheaters. Why wouldn't they just break up or divorce the person if they were no longer in love with them instead of putting them through the pain and misery that person went through with the aftermath? She had seen what Derek had gone through when he found out that Addison had cheated on him with his best friend.
She couldn't understand Rose's need to hide this huge life altering surgery from her husband either. Sure, they had a lot of kids already but she would never think of keeping something like that to herself. Alison knew she wouldn't be able to live with herself.

"So, are you dating anyone Doctor Anderson?" Karev asked the young doctor as she was finishing up the c-section.
"I might be or might not. Who wants to know?"
"I was just wondering. We just don't hear a lot about your love life or I guess lack there of," Alex snickered slightly at his snide remark.
"That's because we don't tell you interns about our love lives," she shot back, allowing Karev to be quiet.
They had just gotten the baby out and the baby was being looked over as Alison heard those cries for the first time.
"Alright time to close up her stomach. Doctor Shepherd, what are you doing?" Alison asked with a sharp tone to her voice as she watched the head of peds have an indecisive look.
"I am going to tie her tubes," Addison said making her decision.
"It might be what the patient wants but I will not be responsible for doing a procedure that is under the rug," Alison says as Karev sits back and lets the two doctors battle it out. "What happens if something goes wrong afterwards that if her husband finds out? Do you really want your job as well as mine to be on the line?"
"Doctor Anderson this is not up for discussion. We are going to cut up this patients ties because she asked for it. I am your head of pediatrics and you will do as I say."
"With all due respect, Doctor Montgomery-Shepherd, you do not get to use your credentials on me to intimidate me. You might get away with it on Doctor Karev but not on me. This is my patient too and I refuse to tie her tubes. I am leaving. I am going to do everything in my power that I follow the code of ethics. It is wrong that she wants to do this surgery without it being on the schedule. I'm sorry but I won't be doing this and chance myself being sued," Alison says directly to Addison.
Alex looks Alison in awe with a small smile on his face as she also stood up to Doctor Addison Montgomery-Shepherd.
"Fine, if that's how you look at it. Then the rest of your surgeries are canceled for the day," Addison told her in a pissed off tone that one of her own was against her.
"I'll get right on that, Doctor Montgomery-Shepherd," Bailey gave her a smirk and a hidden high five as she and Addison left.
Most people didn't like Doctor Miranda Bailey because of how tough she was. Alison knew what Bailey's nickname was - the nazi - and felt it was unfair to call her that. Sure she was tough but she was one of the best damn doctors they had there at the hospital.
"What?" Alison looks at Karev like it was nothing. "You aren't the only one who gets pissed off at her at times."
"Who would have thought that Wendy Darling would stand up for herself against the famous Doctor Shepherd?"
"Have you seen Peter Pan, Doctor Karev?"
"I'm sorry?" he lets out a small laugh of disbelief, wondering why a Peds surgeon was asking him about a children's movie.
"Have you seen Peter Pan?"
"No, I have not."
"Well then I'll let you in on a little secret why the other surgeons and some of patients call me Wendy Darling. In the movie, she stands up against the bullies and mean people to fight for not only herself but her brothers John and Michael. She may look all sweet and innocent, but on the inside she gets tired of people belittling her."
"Hence Wendy Darling," Karev says in awe as he looks at her.
"Hence Wendy Darling," Alison states in confirmation.
"You might be annoying at times with your little Disney quotes you use on the kids but today you were badass, Doctor Anderson."
"Thanks, I think?"
Alison stayed with Alex the rest of the time to make sure that their patient survived. Just because she helped bring babies into the world as well did not mean she didn't care about the mother also.
"You know she's going to make your life a living hell, right?" Alison asked Alex as they stayed with their patient.
"Just me? What about you?"
"She'll be pissed at me but she'll get over it later on. You on the other hand - good luck."
-
We might not always know if we made the best decision at the time of making it but for the most part we will in our gut feeling. Sometimes, we have to go it alone with our decisions. We have to be able to be different than others and not follow the crowd. Even if that crowd is our bosses. We have to look out for ourselves because if we don't then who will?
-
"You know she's going to be pissed at you?" Bailey asked Alison as she met up with her later on.
"I think I would be surprised if she weren't," Alison replied making Bailey smirk at her.
Bailey patted her forearm in comfort but then left as she went to go check on Denny again. Even though Bailey didn't admit it to Anderson - she had a lot of respect that day. She always did but by her standing up to Addison - it made her see her differently than she had before.
Alison took the rest of the day off as Alex Karev decided to be bold too like Alison was. He made sure that Addison wasn't anywhere to be seen when he went up to the husband in private.
"Excuse me, I've been trying to find a doctor this whole time because no one has come up to me," Rose's husband came up to him. "Can you tell me if my wife and baby are alright?"
"I would look into getting a lawyer," Karev told him as he then went forth and told him what had happened during the surgery.
*
"Addison, we have a problem," Chief Webber told her as she looked at him with furrowed eyebrows.
"What's the problem, chief?"
"Did you tie up your patients tubes without the consent or knowledge for her husband?"
"I - I did. It was what the patient wanted. How did you hear about that?"
"I heard about it because the husband is suing this hospital."
-
In an instant, everything can change based on your decisions you make. All it takes is one instance for your life to change to change forever.
