Doctor Kenley
[season 5 episode 11]
"What the hell just happened?"
Alison woke up the next morning to an empty bedside beside her. She frowned as Mark wasn't by her side and cuddling her. She got out of bed and immediately felt the chilliness of the crisp morning air hit her body since she slept naked after their rounds of sex from the previous night after Lexie had left.
She looked around their room for one of Mark's white shirts and put it over her and looked for her panties as well. When she finally found them, she bent down as best she could with her bump in the way. As she lifted them up though, she noticed a big tear in the middle and remembered that Mark, being the impatient one, tore her underwear last night since he couldn't wait to get inside her.
Alison let out a hmph sound and would throw them away in the trash can but for now she went to their dresser and got out a new pair from Victoria Secret as she slid them on.
It was just then that Mark came out of the bathroom with a towel hung low on his hips and she could make out the prominent v shape leading down to his region. His hair was still wet and she could see some water droplets on his chest that had yet to dry. Alison licked her lips at the sight and sauntered over to him as he gave her a smirk.
"You weren't there when I woke up," she pouted at him.
"I'm sorry babe," he tucked a piece of blonde hair behind her ear and pulled her closer to him. "Did you sleep okay?" He asked concerned.
"I'm fine," she told him and he had a look on his face that showed he didn't believe her. "Really. I was upset yesterday but I'm okay now."
"Okay," he nodded his head and kissed her lips. She licked her lips before bringing her lips against his again.
He then bent down and lifted his shirt up from her body and placed his hands on her bump. His son gave a swift kick to her stomach and Alison let out an oof as she felt that. He gave a kiss to her hardened baby bump with multiple pecks.
"I think he realizes that daddy's here," Mark commented and grinned up at her.
"How do you make something that's supposed to sound so innocent sound so sexual?" She asked him.
"I'm pretty sure that was your dirty mind babe," he winks up at her and then gets up from kneeling on the ground and takes his towel off, fully naked in all his beautiful glory.
Mark walked in front and she looked at her work from the previous night as she saw the red scratch marks from her fingernails digging into him as he had his way with her.
He searched for a pair of boxers as well as his outfit for the day and changed into it.
"Ready for some breakfast?" Alison asked Mark.
"Yeah," he nodded his head and Alison got the waffle maker and made them some protein waffles.
She got out the protein waffle mix and mixed the ingredients together which wasn't a lot to it. She then sprayed the mixer and poured the ingredients in.
"How many do you want bubba?" Alison asked Mark as she turned the mixer over and waited for the timer.
"I'll have probably three," he then hesitates before speaking again. "Mmm maybe four."
"Four?" Alison asks with her eyes widened. She knew he ate a lot but damn. "I'm just gonna have two."
She also put a whole wheat english muffin in the toaster for the both of them and just then the timer went off on the waffle mixer. Mark got up and flipped it over again and took it out onto a plate. He then poured another one onto the mixer for Alison this time and flipped it over. Once the muffin's popped up, she got out the blueberry cream cheese along with some blueberries and strawberries and cut the strawberries up to put on top.
Even though Alison loved eggs (especially the pesto eggs that Mark made), she had to stay away from them because something with the smell made her want to throw them up or gag. So Mark didn't make any eggs for her in the meantime.
Since they didn't have any surgeries or any patients until noon, they were able to stay home a little longer than normal. Spending quality time watching baby boy kick and talking about names for him. They were getting closer to the day and needed to narrow down the names. So far they were between Mason, Everett or Beau. Liam and Jackson was also another name that Alison had found that the both of them found so cute. They still hadn't made a decision yet as they wanted to wait until he was born to see what he looked like and which name fit him. It was so hard to choose! This was a name that their baby would have to live with for the rest of their lives.

"So how much longer do you think Yang and Grey are going to keep on ignoring each other?" Alison asked her fiancé as he drove into work and he had his Starbucks cappuccino in the cup holder along with a venti sized water for Alison.
"I give it five more days," Mark tells her as he looks at her once his car comes to a stop at the red light. "What do you think?"
"I give it three. Grey will be the one to concede. Cristina's a tough bitch who doesn't take shit from anyone."
"That's true," he nods his head and continues to drive once the light turns green.
It was rainy day in Seattle. Of course. The windshield wipers were swishing back and forth like crazy to help Mark see as he drove in the rain. The pounding of the rain could be heard against the car and it almost sounded like someone throwing a rock against a window.
Mark made it into the parking garage after finally finding a place and parked the car. Heleaned over the console and placed his rough, large hand on her cheek as he caressed it with his thumb. Mark looked into her hazel eyes with love.
"I love you," he tells her and she smiles at him softly.
"I love you more, Mark," she tells him and leans forward to press her lips to his in a sweet kiss. She lets out a sigh
"Nu huh," he shakes his head. "I need more."
"Mark!" She laughs lightly as she throws her head back in laughter. "What if someone sees us?"
"Let them enjoy the show," he tells her, not giving up that easily. "Come on, I'll help you over."
"Or I can just open my door and walk over to your side. You know, because of my bump," she points to it and he rubs it with his hand as he feels a swift kick to his hand.
"Our baby boy is so strong," he comments as his attention is now onto her bump and son that is due soon.
"Mark," she says getting his attention again as he looks up at her.
"Huh?"
"Quickie, remember?"
"How could I forget? Get over here," he tells her with a hoarse voice that sounds strained but is also very sexy.
Alison opens up her side of the door as Mark slides down his pants and she opened his door and closed it as she pulled her pants down and sat down on top of him as she sank down on his member and he filled her up. Her legs were straddled around him as their faces were close together and she wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
"Fuuuckkk," he told her as he let out a ragged breath and Alison let out a loud moan.
Alison let herself get adjusted to his size before she started to move her hips.
*
"You sure no one will notice we just had sex?" Alison asked Mark as they walked into work after throwing away their drinks from Starbucks.
"Babe, I'm pretty sure no matter what, everyone thinks we have sex even when we don't," Mark shook his head.
"Unfortunately you're right," she muttered.
Before they got out of Mark's car, Alison had brushed through her hair with her hairbrush and sprayed on her favorite perfume at the moment which was Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue. It was fresh, floral and fruity and whenever Mark smelled it on her, he felt comfort knowing that she was by his side.
The couple were in their navy colored scrubs, Alison greeted the front desk greeter who guided the patients where to go, and they signed in before going their separate ways.
"I love you," Alison muttered to Mark after she kissed him.
"I love you more," he told her as he pecked her lips once more and then her forehead before he walked to his respective floor.
At this point, Alison was so over Izzie and how she had treated the blonde Pediatric surgeon. She was glad that Alex was going to be on their service today instead of Izzie. She hoped today would be a good day and that there wouldn't be any drama.
*
"Jackson Prescott," Alison and Miranda greeted the young patient. Alex stayed back and watched their interaction since he didn't really know Jackson. Alison didn't know Jackson like Miranda did but she had heard stories about him.
"You shot up again," Miranda said to him and Alison smiled at Miranda's interaction with the patient.
"No I didn't," he countered back as he was walking with the IV pole and in his hospital gown.
"Then why do you look so big?" Miranda asked him.
"Cause you're short," he told her with a bit of sass as he got on the hospital bed.
"Ouch," Alison commented as she was short too. "What do you have against short people?" She joked.
"Nothing," he laughed as he laid in his bed.
"I'm not short you grew," Miranda told Jackson.
"Doctor Bailey, while Doctor Anderson and I check out Jackson why don't you take Melinda through today's procedure?" Doctor Kenley asked Miranda.
"Yeah, no problem. Come on," Miranda smiled at Jackson's mom and led her outside into the hallway.
"Are you going to let me have a lollipop this time?" Jackson asked as he eyed them in Doctor Kenley's white coat pocket. "My stomach's not so bad right now."
"It's not? So how come I have to cut a piece out of it again?" He joked back.
This was one of the rare times that Alison got to see how Doctor Kenley was. She wasn't sure though if this was truly his personality or if how he was with her was him. Alison had heard stories about how he was with all of his colleagues so she knew it wasn't just her. But it still didn't make her feel any better.
"Give me one of the lollipops and if I keep it down we don't have to do the operation," Jackson tried to bribe him and Doctor Kenley laughed.
"I'm not sure - I'm not," Doctor Kenley replied as he then sat down on Jackson's bed.
"Doctor Kenley?" Alex asked in concern and just then Alison looked up from her computer and began to move to him.
He then fell on the floor in a thump and Alison rushed to him.
"Doctor Kenley!" Alison yelled and carefully went on the ground as Alex held her hand and helped her to get down to his level. "He's having a heart attack. Jackson hit that blue button behind you."
Alison began CPR as he was unconscious .
Code blue second floor, could be heard on the overhead speakers alerting Miranda and Jackson's mom.
"What?" Miranda asked in confusion and ran into the room with Jackson's mom right behind her. "What happened?" Miranda asked as she got on the floor.
"He just fell over," Alison told her still doing chest compressions.
Doctor Kenley was dead.
*
"You okay?" Mark asked concerned as he brought Alison into a big bear hug. She snuggled her head deeper into his chest as he wrapped his arms around her and he kissed her head multiple times.
Mark was sure that experiencing something like your attending die on you was traumatizing enough but to be the one performing CPR was even more.
"Yeah," she shrugged her shoulders when he released her from the hug. "I don't feel anything," she told him and then walked away leaving him confused.
"What the hell just happened?" Mark questioned before walking away.
*
News had spread like wildfire that Doctor Kenley had died in a patient's room. Tyler didn't really feel bad for the man because he knew what an awful person he was but he wished that there was more to Doctor Kenley than what met the eye. He knew that the patients loved him but the doctors and nurses in the Ped's floor hated him. It went that way around the hospital as people were unsure how to feel.
Alison was unsure how to feel. Was she supposed to mourn someone she worked closely with just because they were colleagues? Or would other people judge her for not having sympathy? It seemed like whenever someone passed away people forgot what awful people they were but Alison couldn't seem to turn off the memories.
Besides Jackson, Alison didn't have any other surgeries so Richard didn't have to cancel any other ones. Because Alison was still a fellow, she needed an attending to overlook all of her surgeries.
"Sir," Miranda approached Richard carefully as she would be the first person to tell him Doctor Kenley passed away. Alison sure as hell didn't want to be the one who told him and Alex didn't really know the guy but from what he heard about him he seemed like a douche bag. So that left Bailey. If Miranda were being honest, she was a bit surprised by Alison's reaction after she stopped doing chest compressions on the older surgeon. She knew that the blonde didn't like him but she didn't think that Alison would carry it over until after he passed away. "Uh, I have some bad news. Looks like Jordan Kenley just had a massive coronary. He was gone before he hit the deck. His wife is on the way. She will probably want to speak to you. Reassuring or something. A great colleague - decades of service," she stops as all Richard does is give her a blank stare. "Sir, you in there?"
Instead of answering though, he walks away and leaves a very confused Miranda Bailey.
"Sir?" She begins to question him but he's already gone and not bothering to turn around.
*
"I have to tell Alex about us," Izzie tells ghost Denny.
"Us us?" he asks confused. "That's a bad idea. Monumentally bad."
"It's not fair," Izzie explains to him as she's confused too. "You know about him."
"Yeah and I don't like it. If I could off him I would. But he's the moody broody one whereas I am the mature-"
"Dead. You're dead," Izzie finishes for him. "I'm alive and he's alive. And I'm happy when I'm with him. Don't you want me to be happy?"
"Iz, there isn't anything in this universe I want more," he said softly.
"Then why can't I have you both? Because that's what makes me happy."
"He's going to think you're a whack job."
"He told me that he loves me," she said to him with the biggest yet softest smile on her face. "That's a huge deal for him. The least I can do is be honest."
*
"Doctor Bailey," a peppy blonde comes up to greet her. "Arizona Robbins," she says and shakes her hand. "I'm taking over Doctor Kenley's patients."
"Your the Ped's surgeon," Miranda points out.
"Yeah, I see your assisting Jackson Prescott along with Doctor Alison Anderson. I haven't been able to find her though. All due respect to Doctor Kenley he was a wonderful physician but I'm surprised he followed this course of treatment for so long when it wasn't you know, working."
Miranda makes a face which Arizona realizes her mistake.
"Oh no I'm not criticizing you or Doctor Anderson. You didn't make the call."
"Yeah, but I supported the call," Miranda tells her. "We hadn't turned the corner yet but Kenley was sure that if we kept doing what we were doing -"
"Jack's case is quite severe," Arizona stops the resident.
"Jackson," Miranda corrects her.
"Excuse me?" Arizona asks confused.
"Jackson is his name and if your suggesting that we were torturing him with useless procedures-"
"A lot of senior Ped's surgeons believe that stricturoplasty works and sometimes they're right," Arizona tells her and Miranda lets out a sigh of relief. "So we'll go with it today but with his liver disease we should start exploring other options. "Do you know where Doctor Anderson is?" Arizona asked knowing she wasn't getting anywhere with Bailey in regards to Doctor Kenley's work so she decided to change the subject.
"Uh, no one knows," Miranda said honestly. "She and Doctor Kenley didn't really see eye to eye on many things," Miranda explained a little back story. "So Doctor Webber had canceled her surgeries for today."
"Oh," Arizona's smile dropped. "Okay, thanks. I'll see you in the OR," she tells Miranda as she skates off leaving the general surgeon resident in shock.
*
"How's Alison?" Derek asked Mark as they walked in the hallway. "I haven't gotten the chance to see her today."
"She's acting kinda weird," Mark confessed and Derek furrowed his eyebrows.
"How so?"
"She had no reaction to Doctor Kenley dying..."
"I mean her reaction makes sense to me," Derek told Mark as he understood his person. "Think about it. She couldn't stand the man. He was horrible to her and kept her from performing surgeries. Of course she wouldn't have a reaction."
Mark knew his fiancé well but it was almost scary how well Derek knew her too. Almost sometimes better than Mark knew her. But it also made sense with how long Derek and Alison had been friends for.
"I guess so," Mark cleared his throat slightly. Mark didn't want to admit that Derek was right (even though he was) so he settled for that response.

If I needed time to myself where would I go? Arizona thought to herself.
Arizona made her way to a staircase area that wasn't used very often in the hospital. Obviously, she had to ask other doctors where there was a staircase that people didn't really know of. She made her way to the area where she thinks Alison will be and opens the door and at the bottom of the stairs is the blonde Pediatric surgeon eating a Twizzler with a blank stare on her face.
"Doctor Anderson?" Arizona called out to her and she looked up at her. "Hi, I'm Arizona Robbins. I'm taking Doctor Kenley's place from now on."
"Oh. Hi," Alison says with a stoic look on her face still after she shook her hand.
Arizona wasn't used to this kind of greeting at a new hospital but she guessed under the circumstances that was why both Alison and Miranda were acting this way. At the moment, Arizona was way too peppy and she wished she would leave her alone right now.
"I see your pregnant," Arizona pointed out with a big smile on her face. "Congratulations!"
"I'm just fat," Alison commented and Arizona's face had a look of horror.
"Oh my God, I am so sorry! I just assumed-" But Alison couldn't hold it in anymore and finally let out a loud laugh, leaving a confused Arizona.
"I'm kidding," Alison said as her laughing calmed down and Arizona let out a sigh of relief.
"That wasn't nice," Arizona complained.
"Sorry, I'm in a shitty mood and I shouldn't have joked with someone I just met," Alison told the woman who would be her new boss.
"It's okay," Arizona reassured her. "Can I sit down?" She asked as she pointed down to the empty area next to Alison.
"Sure," the blonde nodded and made room for her.
"Doctor Bailey filled me in a little bit about the relationship you had with Doctor Kenley. Sorry it wasn't a good experience."
"It's not your fault," Alison said and ate a bite of her Twizzler. "Want one?" She offered her a Twizzler and Arizona shrugged her shoulders with a small smile.
"Sure, thanks," she reached into the bag and pulled one out and began to eat it. "I know Doctor Webber canceled your surgeries for today for right now but I was wondering if you wanted to see it through with Jackson? He might feel better seeing a familiar face with you and Doctor Bailey."
"Are you going to keep me from doing surgeries and only do book work?" Alison asked her getting straight to the point.
"No, not at all. I'm more of a hands on learner and I think that's how all surgeons should be."
"Okay, I'll finish Jackson's surgery," Alison agreed, liking her already.
"Great," Arizona smiled big and took another bite of the Twizzler. "So. . .whose your fiancé?" She asked as she nodded to the beautiful engagement ring that was on Alison's fourth finger and Alison began to tell her boss about Mark. She was almost certain that Arizona wouldn't like Mark when she first meets him but hopefully overtime they would eventually.

"You got a tumor on a little gland in your neck," Mark tells their patient who has a look of maybe disbelief? Shock? Like this has happened to her before?
She looks up at the ceiling and brings her hands out.
"Come on!" She groans and Mark looks to George for explanation.
"She does that," George tells Mark. "Margaret, the tumor's benign and it's not hard to remove," he reassures their patient. "Doctor Harris?"
"A parathyroid tumor tells your body to lose calcium that's why you've had so many fractures," Sadie explains.
"Once the tumors out, you'll be back to normal," Callie told their patient with confidence.
"Come on!" Margaret groaned.
"Margaret, this is good news," George reassures her.
"I've been living like an old lady. I don't take the stairs. I gave up running. Skiing. I sit and I knit and I hope the knitting doesn't break a finger because of a tumor?!"
"A tumor that's benign," George reiterates. "Easy to remove."
"Come on!" She yells again and Mark now looks up at the ceiling, wondering if that works. "There was a guy. I fell in love with the most amazing guy. He was sweet, kind, best sex of my life. He moved to Denver and he wanted me to move with him. And I didn't because Denver is icy. Too many reasons for me to slip and fall. So I lose my guy and I break all these bones from a bone sucking tumor?! Are you kidding me?!"
*
They were now in surgery for Jackson and Alison had on her Peter Pan scrub cap that she loved so much.
"Karev, can you pull the retractor more?" Arizona asked Alex.
"What? Like that?"
"Yeah, great," she replied as they were all working on their young patient. "Damn. Look at this. It's a mess. We'll have probably ten centimeters of bowel when we're done here."
"I can't believe this happened," Alison shook her head as she hadn't been on Doctor Kenley's case whenever he performed surgery on Jackson. Even though she was a resident, she could see how bad it was for Jackson. She wished that Doctor Kenley would have put her on the case a lot sooner so that she could have given her point of view.
"Woah, woah," Miranda said in shock. Miranda then asked if they could try a different surgery to save more of his bowel.
"The bowel's dead and the liver's cirrhotic," Arizona explains to the resident. "There's no saving anything."
"Yeah but-"
"Doctor Bailey this kid should have been on a transplant list a year ago. I mean its a miracle he's still alive," Arizona says harsher so that she understands what's going on.
Alison was torn. On one hand she wanted to be on Miranda's side because she's known her longer and has a lot of respect for her. But at the same time Alison already liked Arizona's new thinking and she was after all the chief of Peds. Arizona was her boss. Not Miranda.
*
Miranda didn't like Arizona. Not one bit and she was on a mission as she looked for Doctor Webber and found out he was still in the room where he was earlier.
"WHAT- what are you doing?" She says a bit more gentle and confused after she realizes he's laying down with his arms crossed.
"I'm not seeing anyone today, Bailey," he said in a monotone voice without looking at her as she walked over to him.
"I know that but this is important!"
"Every conversation I have is important."
"Kenley has been replaced with an infant on roller skates named Arizona who didn't have enough sense to change her name to something other than Arizona which shows poor judgment. As does her diagnosis of a patient that I've been working with for three years! She's completely changing Kenley's treatment protocol based on like half an hour of experience with the child! We just took out most of his bowel instead of trying to salvage what he had left. She just wants to throw up her hands for a transplant! The child hasn't eaten solid foods in months. He hasn't grown in years. His liver is shot and he has a serious case. Now we need someone who can handle it!" She said with frustration.
"Doctor Bailey," he said calmly. "You thought Shepherd was just a haircut. You thought Anderson was just another ditzy dumb blonde bimbo," she rolled her eyes at having been told this again. "You didn't like Hahn. And you think Doctor Sloan is a hussy. Can you name any attending or anyone that you thought was good?"
"I've always been a fan of your work," she said stating the obvious and he gave her a look that showed he wasn't messing around.
"Arizona Robbins is top of her class like you and she was Chief Resident like you. And she's the best anyone has seen in a long time. Just like you," he gave her a pointed look which she didn't like. "She is who we have. We don't have anyone else so just deal with it," he told with frustration laced in his tone of voice. "I got her for Alison," Richard told Miranda.
"Why would you get her for Alison?" Miranda asked with a huff, still not happy with the decision and decided she would try to hold a grudge against Richard for as long as she could.
"Because Bailey she was miserable with Kenley. He was a horrible person and an awful teacher. She didn't learn anything under him. That is not how my hospital is supposed to be! We are a teaching hospital and I know that every department deserves the best."
With that she stared at him in disbelief and disappointment and left. How could he just completely disregard her feelings with no thought or consideration whatsoever?
*
Alison was done with surgery on Jackson from earlier (though they would have to go back in and perform another surgery on him). She felt bad for the kid and didn't realize how much Doctor Kenley had really messed things up for him until today.
"I just don't get it, Derek," Alison shook her head as she put her hands in her white coat pockets. "How could any surgeon not think to look at different surgery techniques and not be stuck in box?"
The two best friends were currently complaining about their day. Alison with how he handled his patient and Derek with how Meredith is having a soft spot for the prisoner on death row they are working on.
"I don't understand how Meredith of all people can be sympathetic to a guy whose on death row," Derek shook his head.
"Isn't she all dark and twisty?" Alison asked as her eyebrows furrowed in confusion and he gave her a deadpan look. "I'm just saying..."
"Yeah, yeah," he cleared his throat and then looked back up at her as she rested her hand on her bump and rubbed it soothingly. Almost like she did it without even thinking about it. "How's your little guy doing?" He asked with genuine interest. He was after all going to be his godson.
"He's doing good," she gave him a soft smile at the thought. "He's been kicking up a storm lately."
"Really?" Derek let out a laugh as he wanted this life with Meredith.
"Yeah," she pulled out her phone and showed him a video she had recorded of her pressing in on her stomach and he would do these little kicks. In one of them you could almost see his foot reaching her stomach. It was amazing.
"Wow," he commented as she put her phone back in her pocket. "So, have you guys come up with any names yet?"
"I have the middle name down," Alison told him with confidence and wanted to keep it a surprise for Derek. "But we're still undecided on his first name. We've narrowed down names at least."
Derek laughed.
"Well, you still have time. At least you guys got done with the nursery early on. I know some couples who still didn't have the nursery even after their baby was born."
"Shit. Seriously?" Alison asked him surprised. "I could never do that. Besides it's so much fun picking out everything."
"Yeah, well this couple wasn't exactly thrilled to be pregnant. They actually thought she wouldn't be able to get pregnant."
"Oh," Alison frowned a bit. "That makes sense. But if they didn't want the baby then why didn't get an abortion or did they give them for adoption?"
"No," he shook his head. "Because they ended up loving him and now they're glad they had him. People change their minds all the time," he said as he looked out into the distance.
"Is that what your hoping Meredith does?" Alison asked amused. "You know it's still her body, her choice. What are you gonna do if she decides one day kids aren't for her?"
"I would be upset yeah but I wouldn't leave her," he said a little unsure and Alison looked worried for her person. She knew that Derek loved Meredith and would do anything for her but he also loved kids and knew that he wouldn't compromise about that.
*
"Thank you for whatever it was you gave me," the patient who was on death row thanked Meredith. Meredith glanced at Cristina because she could only imagine the look and what she was thinking about her before Cristina turned around to look at them both.
"Is there a family or someone who should know you're having surgery?" Meredith asked him as Cristina glanced at his paper charts.
"Well, we can't call your family. What she's trying to ask you is - what did you do to get on death row?" She asked the obvious question that everyone wondered but only Cristina was brave enough to ask.
"You don't have to answer that!" Meredith tells him. "That was not what I was asking," she scolds Cristina.
"I don't mind," William told Meredith. "It's an obvious question," he tells Meredith then looks at Cristina. He then tells his story and while Cristina was tough and didn't really let things get to her, this did. But she tried to not let it show to the murderer. Then he looks at Meredith again. "Can I have some jello or anything before surgery? Or is that not allowed?"

Alison was feeling like her legs and arms were feeling like led and so heavy during this pregnancy. She was sure it was because of her platelet levels which was why she tried to eat healthy during this time, though she did have her slip ups when it came to candy or Crumbl cookies. Alison went into the break room and got out her lunch box as she went to sit down and put her feet up. Even though she wore her Hoka shoes (which helped so much), during pregnancy though nothing seemed to help with the swelling.
So far the third trimester had been the hardest for her. Since her first iron infusion, she has had one more and she had a few more scheduled as well for week thirty-six and possibly week thirty-seven. Mark and Alison knew that there was a possibility she could not reach the full term of forty weeks which she had since come to terms with. Along with the possibility of not being able to have the epidural block, she has since realized that this pregnancy is out of her control.
Alison took out her fruit along with her salad and nuts and began to eat. She chose to eat in the break room today, not feeling really social to eat in the cafeteria which was just fine with her.
*
"You can do this," Mark tries to pep talk Callie knowing she would be having a difficult time during this surgery knowing that Sadie would be in there with them. Thank God he didn't have to worry about stupid interns anymore being engaged to Alison. "We're gonna need a strategy," Mark told Callie as they washed their hands to prep for surgery.
"Okay uh, no casual glances over the shoulder," Callie says. "No 'this is interesting. Can we see?'"
"As soon as Margaret's tumor is out we will have them take it to pathology and get it analyzed," Mark concluded in support for his person.
"Go team," Callie agrees.
"Break," Mark says and they bump elbows in agreement before heading into the OR room.
*
"They're still not speaking?" Owen asked Derek in shock.
"Doesn't look like it," Derek said in agreement.
"At least we got each other, you know?" Owen told Derek as he was glad to be making friends with the neurosurgeon and Mark. "We can pretend not to notice. Talk about the Seahawks or something."
"Or we could just take off. Go grab a beer," Derek offered. "Let them pull off the shift."
"Onward and upward," Owen said as he put his mask on.
*
"Hey um," Izzie got Alex's attention and pulled him into a room, closing the door behind them. "I don't think I was clear earlier. It is not like a dream. I see Denny when I'm awake. We hang out."
"This is because I said I loved you," Alex said back and Izzie could tell that he still wasn't getting it. "Your freaked out."
"I'm not," she told him and just then Denny appeared in the room with them watching the conversation take place.
"Your a little freaked out," Denny agreed with Alex as he had his arms crossed.
"Um, we still do stuff together," Izzie tried again. "Sex stuff. I see him and we have sex."
Alex gave a face.
"There's nothing wrong with a good fantasy. I mean I'd rather you fantasize about me or chicks but whatever," he said not really seeing the big deal about it. He didn't realize though that there really was something seriously wrong with Izzie. Izzie knew there was something wrong with her too but she wasn't sure. Having hallucinations of ghosts from the pasts was something that was not normal. She shouldn't be seeing Denny. It was like a cruel joke that she got a second chance with him again and he wasn't really here.
"You really don't care?" Izzie asked shocked.
"Your trying to work something out," Alex told her. "I mean people die and other people you know, get messed up about it. Iz - I've been competing with that tool for a long time. I mean is he here? Can he see me do this?" He asked as he leaned in and kissed her.
"Yeah dude! I can see you!" Denny said with frustration.
"And this?" He asked as he kissed her neck and then leaned down further. "Is he still here?"
"I think you should go," Izzie whispered to Denny as he looked in the other direction.
"Yeah, I've got things to do," he said in agreement.

"Wow," Derek said in amazement as he pulled out what was in the prisoners back. "Sharp. No wonder he was complaining so much."
"He wasn't complaining after he got another set of morphine," Cristina told Derek not caring that she told on Meredith. After all she went against his orders.
"You gave him another set of morphine?" Derek asked in disapproval.
"Yes, and it made him much more comfortable," Meredith said not backing down.
"It doesn't bother you that this guy probably hacked a family of four to death with a machete?" Derek asked his girlfriend.
"A knife actually," Cristina jumped in (and was happy to be on Derek's side in this case). "And women not a family. Five women. It's what he likes," she informed Derek and he turned to look at her. Sure, Cristina was dark and twisty too, but Meredith was even more than her. More than Cristina thought. Alison was the only one who wasn't really surprised.
"You shouldn't be on this case. Either of you," Derek told the two women as Owen just listened.
"What's he gonna do? Jump off the table and get us?" Meredith asked. "Your the one holding the knife," she bantered back and they all stood in silence for a few minutes before Owen spoke up.
"We'll be doing nephrectomy. Either one of you ever mobilized the renal helium?"
"Never done one but I'd love to try," Meredith piped up.
"I practice on cadavers probably hundreds of times," Cristina chimed in too. "It wouldn't have been my first try."
"Huh. Well to some of us surgery comes naturally - others have to practice," Meredith made that dig towards Cristina and the two men shared a look.
"You see the Seahawks game last week?" Owen asked trying to change the subject.

"Why is she shaking her head?" Miranda asked Alex as she came rushing over.
Arizona was including Alison in the conversation as they whispered quietly going over Jackson's chart.
"Jackson's post-op LFTs," Alex informed his resident as Arizona closed Jackson's chart and walked over to them, Alison following behind.
"This kid needs to be put on a transplant list. Today," Arizona says as she gives Miranda his chart.
"The intestine?" One resident asks.
"The liver too," Alison tells her.
"I think we should get another opinion," Miranda says adamantly and Alison doesn't like where this is going. "What do you think Doctor Anderson?"
"I agree with Doctor Robbins," Alison says with confidence in her resident but Arizona scribbles a name down and a number.
"Norman McCale at Hopkins. Head of Pediatrics surgery. Tell him Arizona sent you. When he tells you that Jackson will need a transplant which he'll do about two minutes into the call - put him on the list," Arizona says aggravated.
"Okay there's no need to snap at me," Miranda said getting an attitude.
"There is actually. You've been second guessing me from the moment I arrived and I get it. You liked Doctor Kenley. You trusted him. I'm a stranger with a ponytail but I'm not the problem. The patient is. So how about you stop thinking about me and start focusing on him. Jackson needs a transplant and if we keep wasting time he's not going to make it," she said leaving Miranda and Alison following her.
"You handled that really well back there," Alison told Arizona once they were alone.
"You think?" Arizona asked concerned. "Because I don't want to step on anyone toe's being new around here but I was just so tired of her belittling me."
"Trust me," Alison said as she put a reassuring hand on her shoulder and Arizona relaxed. "I would have done the same. Something to know about Doctor Bailey is that she can be a little rough around the edges but she means well. And she cares deeply about the patients. You standing up to her was good because she will respect you for it."
"Thanks," Arizona gave her a soft smile as Alison took her hand off Arizona's shoulder. "I appreciate that."
It was true. Alison loved Doctor Bailey but she had too much faith in Doctor Kenley because she knew him for a long time. Alison could tell though that Arizona will be a good boss and a good surgeon.
Alison knew it was the blonde's birthday today and had ordered some Crumbl cookies that were being sent now to the hospital. Just because she wasn't close to the blonde didn't mean she didn't care.
*
"Now transplants aren't easy," Miranda explains to Jackson and his family. "That's the bad news. But- the good news is you've got a cracker jack new doctor. I spoke to one of the most respected kid surgeons in the country and he thinks she's one of the best there is," Miranda explained to Jackson's mom. "So she's going to take good care of you. We all are. Why don't we go out and sign some of the transplant consent forms?" Miranda asks Jackson's mom, tearing up a little and she agrees. Jackson's mom kisses his forehead before he leaves.
Jackson then hands Alex the piece of paper he was wanting him to sign earlier and he does now.
"Stars and x's," Jackson tells Alex who sits on his bed with him and looks over the brochure. He now realized the seriousness of what Jackson was going through.

"Looking good, Margaret," Callie told their patient who was waking up from the surgery. "Surgery couldn't have been smoother."
"When can I get out of here?" She whispered loudly as her throat still hurt from the tubes.
"Soon," Mark tells her. "Your young and you'll heal fast."
"Eager to get home?" George asked the patient.
"I'm going to Denver," she whispered loudly and he smiled at her, proud of her.
*
"She's alright," Miranda says in defeat to Richard. "Arizona. Robbins."
"Mhmm," he says not looking at her.
"I don't know if the patient's going to make it," she said sad and Richard could tell so he got up and walked over to her. He took the 'DO NOT DISTURB' sign off the door, crumbled it up and tossed it.
"Let's take a look," he said and she handed him Jackson's charts.

"Hey," Mark greeted Alison calmly as he leaned against the door to her office. "You okay?"
"Yeah," she grinned as she struggled slightly to get out of her chair. "Better than earlier. Did you meet the new Ped's resident?"
"No," he shakes his head. "I'm assuming you like him?"
"Yeah, she's so much better. And guess what. . . she's a lesbian! Who else do you know whose bisexual?" She asked him as she gathered her backpack and closed up her office.
"Your not thinking of Callie are you?" He asked her as they held hands and walked through the hospital.
"So what if I am?" She asked.
"Babe, you just met your new boss and already your wanting to set her up with one of our friends? What if it doesn't work out?"
"And what if it does?" She questioned as Mark opened the door for her and they waited at the bus stop for the bus to take them to Mark's car.
"Okay," Mark let out a sigh as there were other hospital staff at the bus stop.
The thing about Seattle Grace Hospital was that it was a big hospital and it had a lot of parking structure for the patients and the staff. It was a pain in the ass to hike to the hospital, especially with Alison being pregnant, so right now the couple took the buses.
She knew how it looked to most people from the outside looking in. How terrible it was that she didn't have any sympathy toward Doctor Kenley dying. But how could she when he treated her so terrible?
*
The couple was now back at their apartment and Alison was now changed into one of Mark's Seattle Seahawks shirts and a pair of sweatpants from Lulu Lemon.
Mark was making lettuce wraps that Alison loved. Alison always told him they were better than P.F. Chang's. Alison noticed that he had gotten two extra plates out from the cabinet.
"Babe, you know there's only two of us, right?" She asked as she drank her Doctor Pepper.
"Not tonight," he shook his head and her eyebrows furrowed together.
"Whose coming over?"
"Callie and Lexie," he told her. "I hope that's okay..." He said a bit unsure realizing he forgot to discuss this with her beforehand.
"Of course it's okay," she smiled and walked up to him to press her lips to his cheek as he finished making dinner.
She felt baby boy give a swift kick and she let out a sound, which alerted Mark.
"Baby kicking?" Mark asked as his large hand suddenly laid on her stomach and their son kicked again but this time against his hand at the sound of daddy's voice. "Oof, little man," Mark said in a deep voice that made Alison's heart swoon as his New York accent came through and made her all hot and bothered. "Your gonna be a soccer player one day. I can feel it."
"Oh really?" Alison laughed as her head tipped backward. "What if he wanted to be a singer one day in a boy band?" She snickered and Mark grimaced.
"Please no. We don't need our son to be another Directioner or Backstreet Boys..."
"The Backstreet Boys are my favorite though," Alison pouted.
"I know," he smirked and took his hand off her belly and walked away to rummage through a drawer in the kitchen and pulled out an envelope. "Which is why I got us two tickets to see them."
Alison's jaw dropped.
"No fucking way!" Alison's eyes widened as she walked toward him and inspected the tickets to make sure they weren't fakes and he was just joking with her. "Your serious?" She asked with a big smile on her face. "No joking?"
"No joking," he promised her and smiled through the kiss as she leaned on her tip toes to press her lips his.
"I can't believe you did this! Thank you," she kissed him again and again.
"I'd do anything for you," Mark told her honestly. "I love you."
"I love you too," Alison told him as she played with his hair at the nape of his neck.
They heard a knock at the door that interrupted their little bubble that they were just in moments ago and Alison smiled.
"I should go get that. You almost done with the dinner, Mark?" Alison asked her fiancé.
"I would be if you didn't keep on interrupting me," he smirked.
"I don't interrupt you," she said with a gasp and he mocked her as she pouted at him. "And I don't sound like that."
She began to walk away and he smacked her butt as she let out a gasp and then laughed as she answered the door. Callie and Lexie arrived together as Lexie had arrived at the ortho surgeon's apartment first to have a couple of drinks before they met up with Alison and Mark. Since Alison couldn't be their drinking buddy right now, they did it without her so it wouldn't make her feel bad about missing it. If Alison were being honest though, she didn't really miss drinking. Being pregnant, she felt the healthiest she had been in a while. Sure she had been gaining weight, but Morgan (her OB), assured her it was all healthy weight and needed for baby boy. She exercised regularly and her sex life with Mark was at an all time high. Alison had that pregnancy glow that everyone always talked about, despite the back cramps and the swelling of the ankles. Her morning sickness had officially gone away even though she wasn't sure why it was called morning sickness when it happened any time of the day and night.
"Hi guys," Alison greeted her friends with a hug as her bump poked through. "Come on in. Hope you are okay with lettuce wraps."
"I've never had them but I'm excited to try them," Callie grinned.
"They're so good," Lexie tells Callie. "The sauce he makes is chef's kiss," she says doing the hand motion of bringing her fingers to her mouth and making the kissing sound.
"I've been craving them so Mark said he was making them tonight," Alison smiled.
"Hey guys," Mark greeted Callie and Lexie as they walked into the kitchen and he just finished the rice. "Ready for some good food?" Mark asks excited.
"Uh yeah," Callie told him after they hugged and she moved onto hug Ali. "Alison only talks about this meal all the time. I have to see what the hype is about."
Alison lets out a laugh as she looks up from her phone after texting her brother James. Even though she was getting closer with Adam especially after being pregnant herself now, James and her will always be the closest. It didn't bother Adam because each sibling had a different relationship. James and Adam were really close too.
"Okay, so how do we make these?" Callie asked after Mark set everything out.
"I like to put the rice on the plate then take a lettuce wrap on top. Then you take however much meat you want and same with the chow mein noodles too. You can take however much or however little you want."
They all gathered their plates and put the ingredients on their plates as they began to eat them. Within minutes, Alison was done with her first and onto her second as she sat next to Mark.
"What do you think, Callie?" Mark asked as she ate hers.
"It's so good," she said talking with a mouthful of food as Lexie laughed.
"So, do you guys everything ready for when the baby comes?" Lexie asked as she was excited to be considered an 'aunt' to their baby. In a way, Alison and Mark had become Lexie's family when her own half-sister sometimes wanted nothing to do with her.
"Just about. We still have some things we need to get like his stroller and other little things here and there," Alison tells her as she absentmindedly rubs her much larger bump. None of her old clothes fit her anymore and the scrubs she wore to work were now tailored to fit around baby.
"You guys nervous or excited?" Callie laughed a little seeing Mark's expression on his face.
"Excited," they both answered at the same time.
"But also nervous too," Mark confessed.
"That's pretty normal for first time parents," Callie nodded her head.
"Yeah, I'm like shit face terrified," he reiterated as his eyes widened and his leg shook up and down. Alison ran her hand up and down his arm soothingly.
"Really?" Callie asked, shocked for some reason. Even though she should have expected this from him.
"I don't really have an idea of how to be a father. The only person I can think of as an example is Alison's dad, Gabe. And I don't even know how I can compare to that."
"You don't have to compare yourself to him or anyone," Alison tells her fiancé as she turns her head to look at him. "You just be you. We'll make our own mistakes and celebrate our successes."
"That's so sweet," Callie cooed and Lexie smiled.
"It's true though. You aren't going to make your parents mistake," Lexie said agreement as she knew a little background about Mark's past from hanging out with them so much. "I think you guys will be great parents," she said giving them the boost of confidence that they didn't know they needed until now.
"Thanks Lex," Alison smiled softly at her.
"Really. Thank you," Mark gave her smile as his blue eyes softened at the thought of being a dad for the first time. Maybe it wouldn't be so scary after all.

*Ding Dong.* Doctor Kenley is dead.
What do you think about Alison's reaction to his death?
Last chance to give your thoughts on which name you think Mark and Alison will choose for baby boy.
But if your choice isn't picked please be respectful of the name I choose.
So I know with the Backstreet Boys This Is Us tour the boys didn't come to U.S. until 2010 but for the sake of this story line were gonna pretend it was 2009. Who else is a BSB fan?
So sorry for the late update! I didn't mean to take this long but I started a new job on March 16 working at a hospital in the outpatient cardiovascular department. I had two weeks of training on how to use Epic Systems and that took a lot of my time. Now I'm back to my normal work hours though.
Hope everyone is doing good and that you enjoyed the chapter!
