╰┈➤ CH. 1 hackett's quarry forever.
THE GOLD OF THE SETTING SUN — FILLED WITH THE MEMORIES OF SUMMER — BEGAN TO FALL OVER HACKETT'S QUARRY, HITTING THE NATURE THAT VERUCA HOLLOW HAD GROWN TO LOVE WITHIN THE PAST TWO MONTHS. Her love for the summer camp wasn't just solidified from the past two months, however. The summers she had spent long ago sucking up to Mr H for extra sweets as a kid was forever engrained in her mind.
That was many years ago, and yet, nothing had changed. She had spent the entirety of this summer begging Chris Hackett for free treats that she'd share with the campers on the low. One of the many reasons she became such a favourite.
Veruca, sitting comfortable with her legs draped on either side of Jacob Custos' shoulders, breathed in with a deep sigh that followed. She knew she would come back next year, and possibly the year after that just to feel that same nostalgia rush of being a child again. Her smile was sad, but her wave overcompensated for such a wave of emotions for the sake of the campers that sat within the walls of the yellow bus.
The engine rumbled for a few moments until the wheels began to turn, blowing a trail of dust toward the main cabin of Hackett's Quarry. Veruca blew a kiss, her free arm still waving as she spotted a few of her favourite campers she had gotten to spend the summer with. Mr H had told them not to pick favourites as that made other kids feel left out, but Veruca couldn't help it when a few of the girls had practically begged to do her makeup and nails whenever they could.
When those few girls that Veruca declared as "favourites" waved back through the tinted windows, the blonde smiled. It was odd that she had felt closer with some of the campers than a few of her fellow counsellors... cough cough... Ryan Erzahler... but, she brushed off the negative thoughts as she kept the smile on her face.
"You do know they're coming back next year, right?" Jacob Custos had heard the small sniffle that came from the girl sitting on his shoulders. He kept his palms pressed firmly against her calves to keep her steady. Veruca's eyes rolled and instantly the tears that had been resting on her waterline dried.
"Uh... duh... I'm not dumb, Jacob! Don't ruin my moment." Her eyes travelled north as they fell upon the blonde in the green turtle neck jogging up the dirt trail with both of her hands raised. At the sight of the girl, the corner of Veruca's lips turned wickedly. "Your girlfriend seems a little sad. Maybe you should tell her they're coming back next year, too."
Jacob's bottom lip curled, "oh, come on! You said you wouldn't bring it up!"
"Bring what up?" Veruca's high pitched voice slightly ticked him off as she tried to play it off as nothing. "Cheer up! The campers might think you're crying over them."
"I am not crying!"
She felt the second sigh beneath her as Jacob's body rose and fell, an action that Kaitlyn Ka — who had been standing beside that — had noticed within an instant. Jacob Custos knew he would never live down the things he had told his best friend over the past few final nights of summer camp.
Passing through the trees and the summer camp's welcome sign, the bus turned to a haze among the brown dirt that flicked up behind its spinning wheels.
"Bye!" Emma Mountebank called out, waving enthusiastically with both of her hands whilst her perfectly blonde ponytail matched the pace of the wind. Veruca was not the smartest tool in the shed, but she knew of one thing... that that girl's voice was as sweet as poison. They... certainly had their differences. Mostly about Jacob. But, Veruca had to admit that she appreciated the kind of person that Emma had proven herself to be — someone entirely different from her online videos.
The Australian accent belonging to Nick Furcillo filled the golden air as he waved toward the bus from his sturdy position on the porch above. "Laters!"
"Peace and love!" Dylan Lenivy, standing by Nick's side, followed close behind with his final words although he knew the campers could no longer hear them. He gave a solid salute before placing his hands on his hips as he waited for the dirt trail to completely disappear from sight.
Jacob lifted one hand from Veruca's upper calf, his absent grip forcing her body to begin to slip off of his shoulders. Her heart dropped as she braced herself for a rough fall. "Jacob!"
"Shoot! Sorry!" Jacob panicked, placing his hand back on the lower part of her leg to keep her steady on his shoulders. He looked back out toward the yellow bus that had begun to blend in with the unique nature of Hackett's Quarry. "Yeah!! Hackett's Quarry forever!"
After her recovery, Veruca blew one final kiss with an outstretched had before gently tapping on Jacob's shoulder, "alright, mind letting me down safely this time?"
He lowered himself to the ground, allowing the girl to hop off of his back and onto the final step of the wooden staircase they were standing by. Her thin hands covered in decorative silver rings patted down her knee length denim shorts before her fingers found the zip to her completely zipped up green hoodie. She had customised it with the letter 'V' embroidered into the left side of the chest. She slowly pulled the zip down, allowing the blue lace bra to be exposed to the setting sun.
"Woah! What are you doing?" Jacob looked away instantly, but couldn't help himself from turning slightly to get a peak.
Sighing, Veruca smiled as she ran the side of her hand between her breasts, "finally letting the girls breathe after two months!"
Kaitlyn moved to stand in front of her, a singular eyebrow raised at Veruca's explicit action as she eyed the girls bra. "You've been waiting to do that all summer, huh?"
The blonde winked with a crooked smile that bared no teeth, twirling the loose strands of hair that had caught on the silver piercing on her left brow, "you know me too well."
Placing her hands on her hips, Kaitlyn Ka took in a deep breath of air as she glanced between Veruca and Jacob, "you know how many hearts are broken on the last day of summer camp? It's like a romanci-apocalypse."
A strained laugh erupted from the blonde girl as she puffed out her cheeks. A glare was thrown her way and she quickly played it off as a cough. "I can certainly think of one..."
"I mean, guys, you never know... the universe has a kind of way of, er, working these things out," Jacob slapped his hands to the side of his denim covered thighs. "The... space gods, y'know?"
Veruca's lips twisted in disgust as her eyebrows followed in confusion, "the universe? And... space gods? I don't think those space gods exist, Jacob."
"What makes you say that?"
She looked at Kaitlyn before training her eyes back on him, "gosh, you really are hanging onto the last remaining hope with-"
"Ah! Ah ah ah!" Jacob quickly silenced her, gritting his teeth while his eye twitched, "we had a pact."
Kaitlyn's eyes passed between the two that continued to bicker back and forth in Hackett's Quarry riddles. "Okay. You two, spill it."
He raised his hands in the air like an innocent man, and Jacob plastered on his typical idiot smile, "nothing to spill, you know, we're cool."
"Totally cool," Veruca gave a thumbs up with a bit of hesitation, "cucumber cool..."
"Oh, so cool," Kaitlyn's eyebrow rose as she grew more skeptical.
Jacob nodded, "we are 'super' cool..."
Passing her glances between the pair in front of her, Kaitlyn analysed Jacobs awkward stature, while the girl beside him bit her lip in hopes of not spilling anything. "Veruca?"
But, the girls lips could only remain sealed for so long. "She dumped his ass!" Veruca burst out, a slight giggle following until a hard whack was placed upon her upper shoulder from Jacob. "What? She's like... what's his name?"
"Sherlock?" Kaitlyn questioned.
Clicking her fingers at the girl, Veruca nodded, "that's the one! Basically Sherlock sniffing out your thing with Emma-"
Jacob turned his body and surveyed everything around the group of three, paranoid that Emma Mountebank would spring up from behind them at the sound of her name being said. "Can we keep it down? C'mon, she's right there."
The two girls that stood beside him continued to laugh even as they followed him toward the luggage stuffed car. The dirt crunched beneath their suitable summer camp shoes as they passed by the girl that had been the one to dump Jacob.
"Quit it," Jacob turned and whispered, swinging a flat palm beneath his chin as a threat when he looked at the two girls. Almost immediately, his posture straightened and his demeanor became collected upon passing Emma - who completely ignored his presence.
Kaitlyn's laughing ceased, "hey, Emma!"
Turning, Emma's blonde ponytail rested on her shoulder as she looked at the girls. "Hey!" She gave a small wave toward Veruca before turning back to follow her original path past the main cabin.
Jacob's hands rose into the air before he let them fall back to his side, hitting the black jeans he wore. The two girls continued to laugh. Whether it was at him, or just solely on the event that had just unfolded, it still irked him. "Alright, ha ha, joke's over. Nobody's laughing now."
"Oh, c'mon. Don't get your panties in a twist, Jake," Veruca playfully shoved at his shoulder, an enchanting smile on her face that felt like hypnotism to him. "We're just fucking with you, pretty boy."
He remained silent as his eyes found her smile, travelling down to where the zip of her hoodie began to split. But, just in time, he caught himself before Kaitlyn could say any thing else directed toward his misfortunes. "Can we please get back to whatever the hell this is?" His hands circled around the luggage situation that had the trunk of the car overflowing. He looked over at Kaitlyn, "this is, um... you've heard of spatial awareness before, right?"
"Nah, spatial awareness is for nerds."
"What's wrong with the bags?" Veruca asked dumbly, hands on her hips as she pursed her lips and attempted to spot what was wrong with the luggage.
Jacob's mouth fell open, "what's wrong with it? Look at it! This, yeah... this is too much. Love your guys' efforts, but everything is squashed to literal atoms."
"Huh," the blonde huffed, clicking her tongue, "I say we can totally fit more bags. I can see... one, uh... two. Yep there's three! Three spots. Maybe more if we just squash everything."
"I second this," Kaitlyn raised one hand from her hip so it lingered in the air for a few moments, "Now, would the old married couple mind grabbing the last couple of bags?"
"Old married couple?" Jacob and Veruca spoke in synch, both turning around to ensure it was them that Kaitlyn had been speaking to. They then passed glances between one another before it returned back to the dark haired girl. Their faces were almost guilt ridden.
Kaitlyn remained silent, her bafflement evident on her face based on the fact that the two in front of her failed to see what she could. "Just go fetch the bags so I can fill in these gaps, please."
Veruca saluted before spinning on her heel so she faced the cabin, "yes ma'am."
"Make sure you say hi to Emma for me," Kaitlyn pointed toward Jacob, smugness consuming her from the newfound information she had gathered.
He immediately went back to sulking over his blonde summer fling. "You're a bad person.
Smiling wickedly, Kaitlyn nodded, "yes I am."
Walking off, Jacob made sure to stick close to the girl infront of his as he hit her upper arm to gain her attention. "Dude? You seriously let the cat out of the bag?"
"Uh, I know I'm not the smartest..." Veruca started, folding her arms over her chest as she relaxed her body weight onto one leg and bent the other, "but she clearly already knew, Meathead. I mean it's kind of obvious... you've got this stupid look on your face. Which you always have but-"
"Seriously? Meathead?" Jacob grumbled.
"Fitting, ain't it?" The blonde's eyes roamed his body as she tapped her finger against his nose before turning to take the lead, "personalised just for you."
"Cute," he rolled his eyes, following her up the stairs as he adjusted the sleeves of his olive green sweater. At the top of the stairs, the pair found themselves on the exact porch both Dylan and Nick had previously been leaning against the railing when bidding their farewells to the campers. Now, both had disappeared form their sight.
Veruca looked around, her jaw practically on the floor. "Ugh! No way those assholes are leaving us with the bags!" She huffed, rushing straight for the wooden double door that lead inside the main hall. Her hand gripped the round knob with a sense or urgency, but it could only get her so far as neither door budged. "Seriously? You've got to be kidding me..."
"Ugh, Jesus Christ," Jacob slid past the girl, raising his arm to knock against the door. "Come on guys, open up."
Almost instantly the door swung open. On the other side, Dylan Lenivy grinned at the pair in front of him with innocents. "Hi guys."
"Hey, are you guys gonna help with the bags or what?" Jacob pointed toward the completely stuffed car.
Dylan poked his head past the door frame, his hand still remaining on the back of the door whilst Nick took his place standing behind him.
"Oh, um... y'know I was actually just working on fixing... uh, the door," his eyebrows rose as he used his other had to caress the wood before slowly beginning to close it in their faces. "It's... yeah it's broken."
"Dylan, c'mon," Jacob pleaded, his words practically bouncing off of the wooden door and straight back into his face. "Dylan, please. We've got to get the last bags in there, man! C'mon!"
"What's wrong with this thing? It's just closing! Oh! It's closed!" Dylan's voice travelled through from the other side of the door as the click of the lock secured the reality that the two boys were never going to help them out with the bags.
Even through the door, Nick's accent was as clear as day, "sorry bro!"
Veruca hit her fist on the wooden door, "thanks guys! Real cool!" She spun on her heel to look up at Jacob, the blue glitter that had been smeared across her eyelids shimmered in the golden sun that brightened her brown eyes. "Well... now what?"
"Now, we find another way in," Jacob peered around on either side of the door, hoping there would be at least one window that hadn't been locked for the sake of letting the air flow through the main hall during the summer.
Walking past the wooden 'Hackett's Quarry' sign that showed the year it was founded, Veruca excitedly tapped on Jacob's shoulder with a sense of urgency, "oh! Quick! Get a pic of me with this," her hands slid in the back pocket of her shorts as she pulled out a disposable camera she had saved specifically for the summer, and she quickly handed it to the man. Mr H may have taken their phones, but Veruca still wanted photos for the sake of memories.
"You have about twenty pics with this thing already, V," Jacob's eyes rolled as he angled the camera. He already knew his way around the camera as he lined up the shot, waiting carefully for her to strike her pose to make it seem as though she was kissing the sign.
"One more won't hurt!" Veruca blew a kiss at the camera before pausing at his unimpressed face, "just take the damn photo, Jake."
"Yes, boss," he took a single shot, knowing that she wouldn't have many photos left on the camera.
Once she confirmed that the photo had been taken, the blonde snatched the camera from his hands before shoving him toward the sign. "Come on sour puss, pose!" Jacob's pointer finger found his lips as he pulled on the hem of his sweater and brought it to the font whilst adjusting his position so his behind stuck out from his body. "Oh yeah... just like that. You're a natural, baby!"
Veruca giggled as the camera clicked. When she looked back at the two photos they had taken, her giggle slowed whilst the smile remained on her face. She would definitely be keeping these.
"Watcha laughing at?" Jacob slid beside the girl, wrapping a single arm around her shoulders as he leaned in to get a look at the camera.
Nudging her elbow into his side, Veruca leaned in close, "nothin'... just your face." She slipped the disposable camera back into her rear pocket, allowing Jacob's arm to fall from her. "Anyway, pretty boy... where's this window at?"
"Ahem! Right! Should be somewhere around..." Jacob turned on his heel as he hugged the outer wall of the cabin until they were face to face with a decently sized window, "ah-ha! Our one way ticket to the bags, M'lady!" He wriggled his fingers beneath the window, slipping his hand above the wooden window sill as he pushed the frame up to allow just enough room for his bulky frame. Jacob pulled half of his body through the gap, leaving one of his legs to dangle on the other side as he heard the cough of doom from behind. "Oh great. What is it?"
Veruca pouted, her arms crossed as she shifted her body weight onto her straightened leg, "uh... what happened to ladies first?" Jacobs eyes roamed the area as his mouth fell open trying to think of a response. But, the blonde grew tired of waiting on her feet, "ugh, move it, Meathead!"
"Hey!"
With a thud, Jacob Custos fell on the other side of the window, practically eating the wood of the floorboards as his cheek stayed planted in between his hands. The culprit stood with her hands up, a smirk on her glossed lips, before she pulled herself through the gap of the open window. Veruca was at least mindful enough to step over his body, leaving him to groan on the floor.
"Oh... whoops..." Veruca sighed as she looked around the room, avoiding laying her eyes on the man on the floor. The room was filled with bookshelves that were covered in dust — as were the books that rested in their places. It was a room filled to the brim in old historics none of the teenage Hacketteers or campers had cared for.
Jacob rose from the floor, rubbing his cheek as he followed after the girl into the dining all. "So much for witnessing my epic skills..." He muttered under his breath.
All lights in the hall were switched off, leaving the natural golden light to pierce through the open blinds that hung from above the windows. Dirtied plates and cups that must have been left behind from campers remained on the rich wood where they ate each day for all of their meals.
"Look who it is..." Jacob's salty attitude made a return, springing back to life after his "accidental" fall.
Sat on the last few steps of one of the staircases that faced each other, Nick rolled the red of his sleeves up to his elbows as he caught a glimpse of both Jacob and Veruca making their way through the sea of tables and benches used as seats. "Hey guys!"
"Save it for the judge, Furcillo," Veruca turned her head away and raised her palm to his face. But, she could not stay mad at him for long as they both shared a smile after her common dramatics.
Jacob, on the other hand, remained to be the bad cop out of the two. "Okay, really dude? Locking us out?"
Nick went back to avoiding all eye contact, looking just past the pair as he stuck his hand in the air to use his fingers as a way to count his reasons for his antics earlier. "Okay in my defense... A) It was Dylan's idea... and B)... It was really funny." His last reason was let out as more of a question.
"Oh yeah, right is that- is that right?" Jacob huffed.
Shrugging, one of the longer curls of Nick's hair fell across his face. But, he looked past the loose strands and looked up at Jacob directly, "I don't write the rules, man."
"So..." Veruca smiled, locking her hands with one another behind her back as she rocked back and forth on her heels, "you helping? with... the bags? Since you kind of promised..."
In an instant, his lip turned in disgust as he contemplated the promise he had previously made, "nah, 'Ruca. I gotta stay here for Mr H to return our cell phones, sorry."
She pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed whilst Jacob rapidly blinked at the man in front of him, "Oh Jesus Christ. Okay," Jacob took a deep breath in, and an even deeper breath out, "why are the stairs blocked?"
"Well, apparently," Nick turned to look behind him, "it's to keep raccoons and other "pesky varmints" from ransacking the place," he faced the pair again, with his hands raised, "Mr H's words, not mine."
"Oh! So, incredibly boring!" Jacob let out a single laugh, clapping his hands together. Nick's caught-off-guard look was enough for Jacob to stop caring so much about the bag situation. He walked off toward the opposite staircase, "come on, V."
Veruca pointed at Nick — watching the boy gulp at the point of her nail, "get me my phone from Mr H or else you're in the back middle seat, mister." When she turned to race after Jacob, she had finally caught up as the man hunched over to pick up the two bags. He occupied both hands as he left Veruca with empty ones. She made it clear to him that they were empty as she waved them in his face. "I came all this way just to not carry a bag?"
"Oh Jesus, I just can't win," he muttered to himself, "I thought you wanted me to be a gentleman?"
"That was, like... five minutes ago," she crossed her arms, "besides this was a TEAM effort, Jacob. Drop it. Now. Please."
Sighing in frustration, he let the second back drop to the floor from where he stood upright as he kept the other one for himself to carry in one hand. Veruca clapped enthusiastically before attempting to carry the duffle in a single hand as Jacob was doing. She laughed slightly, her mind blaming it on absent nerves as the bag didn't budge. But, she tried again. And when it finally lifted off of the floorboards, she grunted like a gym freak aiming for his personal best. Veruca's hands fumbled with the straps as she finally came to the conclusion that she would rather carry it safely down the stairs with two hands than end up with a face full of splinters.
"Bag... secured..." Veruca huffed as she pulled her arms close to her body. Her arms shook as she tried her best to keep the bag raised above her feet. Looking between Jacob's emotionless stare and the door that would lead them to the car, she groaned, "well? Hurry the fuck up and open the door! You're killing me here!"
"Again, who wanted to carry the bag?"
"The door, Jacob!"
