Gasps reverberated around the club. Everyone was silent as they watched an athletic brown-haired man march towards your little group in the corner.
And he was fuming. With his fists clenched and brows pinched together so close they were almost one continuous line, you thought he looked kind of like an angry animal crossing villager, stomping around the island with smoke coming out of their ears and ruining everyone's fun. You had to hide a giggle at the thought, because in reality, it was an intimidating sight to behold.
There he was, Christopher Bang in all his glory.
"Hey Channie," Han said, waving. He was standing next to Robin, using a napkin to wipe off his shoes. "Come to join the party?"
Chan narrowed his eyes, beelining straight for his friend in a disconcertingly unfriendly manner.
Maybe Han should run, or beg for forgiveness. The thought crossed your mind before you even fully knew what was going on.
Chan was jealous, that much was obvious. He must have been watching Han and Riley dance all night, and after seeing Han practically run away from Riley when she threw up, he had finally hit his breaking point.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Chan barked at Han.
Han looked stricken. Eyes widening, he exclaimed, "Dude, what are you talking about?"
"Why would you leave Riley standing there when she's clearly not feeling well?? Do you even like her at all?" Chan demanded, crossing his broad arms over his equally broad chest.
Han held his hands up in surrender. "Sure I like her, she's fun to hang out with and all! But you know how I feel about people throwing up. It freaks me out! It was just a knee-jerk reaction! I didn't mean anything by it."
"If you like Riley so much, then why weren't you paying any attention to her the entire night??" Chan retorted.
He reached over to Riley, who stood a few feet away from him still wiping her mouth, and put an arm over her shoulders. "You've been distracted ever since you oh-so-smoothly asked her to dance, which was hours ago! Why wouldn't you pay attention to your dance partner? What could have you that distracted?"
Han's cheeks turned pink, his eyes flickering towards Robin, who still stood next to him, then to his feet. "It was nothing," he mumbled.
Chan glared harder, his grip on Riley's shoulders tightening. "Next time, be more considerate."
Han glared back. "If you were so keen on dancing with Riley, why didn't you ask her yourself?"
A voice from the DJ's booth saved Chan from answering.
A security guard with a potbelly and about a foot of hair protruding from his nostrils yelled into a microphone, causing ear-splitting screeching sounds to echo throughout the room. "Our apologies to the guests of Scarlet Nightclub, but we must close for the night due to a hygienic emergency. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience. We are giving out vouchers to every guest for a free evening over the next week to make up for this. Now we must ask that you please exit so we can deal with this... problem."
The guard shot you and your friends a glare before shuffling out the side door only labeled "security and employees only".
You shrugged. "I guess that's our cue to leave," stepping in front of Riley, you studied her face with concern. Even from a few feet away, you could smell the acrid scent of alcohol emanating from her in waves.
Riley nodded and grinned loosely. "I feel soo much better. Why aren't we dancing?"
You glanced up at Chan, who was practically clinging to your friend's arm. "Can you take care of her? Make sure she doesn't do anything too crazy for the rest of the night? I don't want her passing out or flashing someone again."
Chan's anger flared a second time. "What do you mean 'again'?" He growled.
You scooted away from the man before he could bombard you with more questions. He'd soon learn that Riley was a force to be reckoned with. If he hadn't already found out.
The rest of your friends, along with the other party-goers, filed out of the bar. You could hear grumbles from the others about a night wasted, that they'd barely had anything to drink. Some were grateful that the night was over early so they could go to bed or binge watch an entire season of anime.
When all of your friends had convened on the grass outside of the club, everyone started deciding what to do next. You didn't want the bar to close so early, but since it was because of one of your friends, you couldn't get too upset about it.
"I guess we should turn in for the night," Mya put forward, sighing and blowing her hair out of her face. You hadn't expected her to have such a good time, but with Jeongin standing behind her with a dopey grin on his face, they must have been dancing the entire night.
"Wait!" Han cut in breathlessly. He stood up after trying his best to clean his shoes off one last time, eyes fixed on Robin. "W-what if we stayed? It's not that late!"
"We could dance right here, on the grass!" Lanhua agreed, wrapping a hand around Changbin's wrist and glancing up at him, eyes shining.
"I don't mind a bit of damp grass," Changbin grinned back at her, his shoes squeaking as he shifted back and forth.
"I'd be down!" Jeongin agreed.
"Hey guys, I think I'm gonna take Hyunjin back to the house, he's uhh... not doing so well," Seungmin appeared behind them, practically dragging Hyunjin on the ground. Your brother was slumped over his and JJ's shoulders, his eyes flickering open and closed, his tongue lolling out of his mouth.
"Oh my gosh, before you leave, can I take a picture??" You exclaimed, pulling your phone out of your bag. "Hyunjin is never gonna live this down."
Seungmin rolled his eyes, but shifted Hyunjin into a better position for you to take a picture anyway. You snapped a photo, the flash illuminating Hyunjin's pale face. His nose twitched, but he didn't react.
"Thanks Seungmo, you're the real one," you beamed. "Thanks for taking him the whole night, it means a lot. You too JJ, you've been the best."
JJ laughed. "You probably shouldn't be thanking me, I think I'm the one at fault for this mess."
You shrugged. "I dunno, I think this is comedy gold. I hope we'll see you tomorrow!"
"Is that even a question?" JJ winked at her. "See y'all later, thanks for ending my shift three hours early."
JJ and Seungmin disappeared, carrying a near-unconscious Hyunjin down the road back towards the beach house.
The rest of your friend group moved further onto the grass. A few tables sat at the far end of the clearing with a pair of metal chairs on either side. A few of the other bartenders were setting their drink trays on the table before removing their aprons and heading home for the night.
"What about the music?" Riley complained, swaying and nearly falling on the ground over and over. Chan tried to help by grabbing her waist, but she started flailing her arms instead, so he had to dodge out of the way. Although she no longer seemed nauseous, she was still incredibly drunk.
"I can play music from my phone!" Robin suggested, pulling her phone out of her bra. Han stared at the place her phone had come from, mouth agape.
"Yess!" Lanhua cheered. She and Changbin were already standing in the middle of the grass, Changbin's hands twisting around each other as if he wasn't sure what to do with them.
Robin set her phone on the table and chose a song. It was by some sort of Australian boy band that you had never heard of.
"Can you play a slower song?" Mya asked curiously. She stood extremely close to Jeongin, who was running a finger up and down her right forearm.
"Yess!" Lanhua called again as she messed with Changbin's hair. "What about Cupid by Fifty Fifty? I love that song!"
Robin shrugged and nodded, choosing the song and leaving her phone on the table.
"I'm not the one dancing with a hot guy," she chuckled, running a hand down her dark blue dress casually.
"I wouldn't say that," Riley called out from the other side of the grassy clearing. Despite the slow and romantic beat, she was trying to grind on a helpless Chan's lap. Was it his lap if he was still standing? You weren't sure.
Chan was trying to keep Riley from falling over. He struggled to simultaneously push her off him, and pull her back as he dance moves got more erratic and suggestive. She was super incapacitated, but Chan was a guy with the brain of a guy. He couldn't help it if he enjoyed a hot girl's attention.
Robin raised her eyebrows in silent question, shifting back and forth on her platform heels. They must have been hurting her feet.
Luckily, she didn't have long to wonder what Riley was hinting at.
Han shuffled towards her, hands in his pockets, eyes downcast. His adorably round cheeks were stained pink as he stopped to stand in front of her.
"If you're not interested in dancing, I get it," he started, not meeting her curious gaze. "But you're the most beautiful woman I've ever met."
Robin opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again. Finally, she said, "was it my incredible voice and dance moves that seduced you?"
A surprised laugh escaped Han's mouth, and he noticeably loosened up, his shoulders, which had been stuck up by his ears, finally releasing to where they should be. "Y-yeah, something like that!" He agreed, scratching the back of his head sheepishly.
"And to answer your question, yes I'd love to," Robin added with a wicked grin.
"I didn't ask you anything," Han rushed to say.
"I know, but you were thinking it weren't you?" Robin offered her hand, and Han took it quickly, as if she might rescind her offer if he didn't accept fast enough.
"When We Were Kids" by Twice started playing, and the couples, Changbin and Lanhua, Han and Robin, Jeongin and Mya, and even Chan and Riley (sort of) were dancing in the damp green grass.
Changbin was spinning a drunk Lanhua in a circle as she giggled in a most raucous way, making Changbin burst into childish laughter of his own. Robin was trying to sing along to the slow, nostalgic song, her pitchy voice nearly drowning out the real notes, as Han beamed at her like an lovesick fool. Jeongin and Mya were whispering to each other in the very corner of the clearing, as if they were confiding deep secrets they didn't want anyone else to hear. Chan had finally gotten Riley to sit, but since there were no chairs near them, they were in the grass. Thankfully, she was wearing a black dress so the stains would be minimal. They swayed to the music, Riley's eyes were closed as she nearly slumped over into his lap. Chan was laughing at her as he tried to keep her upright, but his fingers lingered a bit too long on her arms to be casual.
You sighed as you watched all of your friends have a romantic night while you stood alone. Even Robin, who you didn't know and who had never met any of the guys before, had found someone to dance with. Were you just that much of a loser? Did any guys like you at all?
Deciding that you were in for a long, lonely night, you took a seat in one of the metal chairs and grabbed three shots, downing them all. You weren't even sure what they were, but they hurt your throat and burned your stomach as they went down. Good.
This vacation was feeling a little too much like reality, and you didn't like it. You'd come to Jeju to get away from real life for two weeks. Away from your stressful job, of the pressure to design the perfect space for your high-profile clients. Where one mistake could cause your entire career to crumble. You were becoming successful, and with help from Hyunjin, you were really starting to make a name for yourself. But you were still a small business. Word of mouth was key, and if you screwed up, word would spread. Quickly.
This vacation was supposed to signify your freedom from all that stress, to prove to yourself that you were more than your job. More than what other people said about you.
But now you'd fallen right back into that trap, hadn't you? You'd let your stupid crush on Felix pull too much weight in your mind, and look what happened. You were sitting alone and wallowing about the fact that he still didn't have feelings for you. Fucking pathetic.
You took three more shots, screwing your eyes shut at the taste. You knew you should probably stop, but you didn't want to. You were a bit of a lightweight, you knew that, but the shots were the only thing keeping your negative emotions at bay. If you stopped, those feelings might just overwhelm you.
You couldn't feel your hurt anymore. Even if you were the only one to blame for that hurt. It still sucked, and the loneliness you were feeling tonight only exacerbated the unbearable sensation of sadness.
Maybe it was time you went back home, to bed. Give up on the notion that anyone, let alone Felix, cared enough to spend one stupid night dancing with you at the club.
But as you were about to stand up, head back to the beach house, throw up (hopefully) in the toilet, chug a bottled chai tea that you brought from home, and fall asleep, a hand came to rest on your shoulder.
You flinched, squinting up at the person standing above you.
Your vision was blurry, the lamplight behind you searing your foggy brain and practically melting your eyes. It was a man. You couldn't fully tell who it was, but he looked good. Or at least you thought so.
"Hey Laska, sorry I'm late, I got held up back at the house. You wanna dance?"
