"Boys are so stupid," you mutter under your breath before racing out the door after Mya.
Hopefully Riley wouldn't miss you guys too much. She seemed to be embroiled in her own drama at the moment, but you knew she could probably handle herself.
"Mya?" You called as you ran down the sidewalk. The four-inch heels of your white stilettos dug into the balls of your feet like nails in a plank of wood. Maybe you should have worn your gold sandals instead. You hadn't expected to be doing so much walking.
"Mya, where did you go?" You shouted again. For being so short, she was fast.
You heard a sniffle come from behind a bunch of shrubs to your left. Outside the club, there was a field of grass surrounded by bushes and low-hanging palm trees. With the faint sounds of the ocean rushing in the background, it was a peaceful oasis compared to the bumping bar.
Slowing down to a tiptoe so your footsteps couldn't be heard just in case Mya tried to run away again, you snuck around the other side of the bush.
Mya was on the ground, crouched down with her arms wrapped around her knees. She looked like a lost toddler waiting for their parents to find them. You could hear her sniffling more insistently, like she was holding in a torrent of tears.
"Mya..." you said again, loud enough so she could hear you.
She turned around, sparkly makeup smudged down the side of her face. Clearly, you should have chosen a waterproof eyeliner for her tonight. Her eyes were red, cheeks tear-stained as she looked up at you.
"What's wrong?" You asked, coming to sit next to her. The grass was sweating from the summer night heat, sure to leave grass stains on your butt. But it was worth it for a friend.
"I saw Jeongin," Mya hiccuped. "D-dancing with another girl."
You put an arm around her shoulder. "I'm sorry babes."
"Do you think that means he doesn't like me? I thought he might have been flirting with me earlier when he offered me his jacket but... maybe he thinks I'm too boring."
You frowned. "You're not boring, you're one of the most wild, funny people I've ever met."
"I'm not very wild," Mya sniffed. "Maybe he wants a girl who drinks and parties a lot. I don't do that."
"If he wants to flirt around and party with other girls, then he's not good enough for you," you pointed out.
"I like him though," Mya wiped at her eyes.
You grabbed her hand to stop her. "Don't ruin your makeup," you reminded.
"Why does it matter, the night is over anyway."
Still gripping Mya's hand, you pulled her to stand. You weren't entirely sure why you were so fired up, but you knew you couldn't let your friend get beaten down by a stupid guy. "The night sure as hell isn't over just because of a boy!" You exclaimed. "You're gonna go back in there and show him that you don't give a shit if he's dancing with someone else, because you're way hotter than any other girl he could get with."
"How am I gonna do that?" Mya's eyes had dried, but she watched you warily.
"We're gonna get that other hot guy to dance with you," you shrugged. "That was part of the devious plan, right? Make Jeongin jealous."
"Oh, we're still doing that?" Mya didn't sound disappointed, more surprised. "It would be kind of nice to make him jealous, wouldn't it?"
"Hell yeah it would," you giggled, tugging your friend's arm.
"Finee," Mya feigned hesitancy, but you could tell from the glow on in her eyes that she was excited.
"Wait," you stopped in the middle of the sidewalk.
Mya tilted her head. "What's up?"
"We gotta fix your makeup," you replied. "You're looking drunk, and you're sober. We want to be giving 'hot bitch who will remember this night', not 'passed out crazy girl who doesn't remember her name'."
Mya rolled her eyes, but let you swipe away at the smeared makeup with your thumb. "I do not look that bad."
"No, you never do, but I know you'd kill me if you found out I let you walk in there with screwed up makeup."
You took Mya's lack of response as agreement.
"Okay, now get in there and flirt with that hot guy!" You exclaimed, shoving your friend a little too hard in the back. "What's his name, by the way?"
Mya blushed. "Joshua. He's pretty hot, isn't he? I mean, he's no Jeongin but..."
"Good enough for tonight," you agreed. "C'mon, I'll even go with you!"
Mya turned around, her hair whipping her face and getting stuck in her lipgloss. Extracting the strands from her face she asked, "What about you? What about Felix?"
You waved your hand, feeling a lump bob up in your throat that you couldn't push back down. "It doesn't matter. You're more important right now."
Mya eyed you suspiciously, but didn't question it. "O-okay," she straightened up. "Wow, I'm really doing this. I didn't think I'd be a devious plan sort of girl."
"Well, you were the one who came up with it in the first place."
With that, you nudged her forward, and the two of you entered the club.
Before the two of you could even fully make your way into the club, the man Mya had been flirting with earlier, Joshua, approached the two of you. He was certainly attractive, you could agree with that. With his brown hair done casually and a black button-up that fit his torso perfectly, he was certain to catch any woman's attention.
"Would you like to dance?" Joshua asked, shooting Mya a boyish grin. Glancing over at you, he added, "your friend can come too, if you want."
"Yes, we'd both like that!" Mya agreed breathlessly, covertly glancing behind Joshua, presumably to see if a certain fox-faced man was watching.
"Great," Joshua led the two of you into the middle of the dance floor where many people were showcasing some wildly questionable dance moves.
You danced a little bit, but you mostly watched as Mya had a great time with Joshua. You had to admit, it stung a little to see your friend having such a great time while you were there alone, but you were happy for her. They would be having a pretty good conversation, if Mya didn't continue glancing a few degrees to her left every two seconds.
Jeongin and the other girl were still dancing together a few yards away, but it looked like Jeongin was trying to inch over to where Mya and Joshua were. His eyes kept shiftily sneaking glances at them in a very obvious fashion. It looked step three of the devious plan was in full swing for Mya.
"Hey Alaska, how are you?" Before you could scoot away to give Mya and Joshua some time alone, Jeongin appeared at your side, cheeks flushed, his eyes a little glazed over and fired up.
"Hey Jeongin, what's up?" You smiled at him. You hadn't talked to Jeongin much this trip. He'd always been the baby of the friend group, even though he was a few months older than you. You supposed that was why he never treated you like a child, because his friends did the same to him. Despite losing touch over the past few years, he'd always been very nice to you. You two were always partners in crime, pulling on Hyunjin just to piss him off.
"Not much," he shifted from one foot to the other, raking his hands through his hair. "You uhh... like dancing?"
You shrugged. "Sure I do. But Mya seems to be having a better time than me."
At the mention of your friend's name, you could swear you saw a hint of resentment flash across his face, but it disappeared in an instant. You hid a smile. He was so clearly into her.
"Ah, yeah Mya!" Jeongin's gaze strayed to the younger girl, before he ducked his head again. "How's she doing? She looks a little overwhelmed. Maybe I should invite her outside for some fresh air or..."
You put a hand on his shoulder, and his cheeks darkened further. "You know you can just talk to her, right?" You raised your eyebrows. "I think she would want to hear what you have to say."
"You think so?" Jeongin chuckled, gaze flicking between you and Mya.
You nudged him in the side. "Just do it, before that other guy sweeps her off her feet or something."
Jeongin's face hardened, and he nodded, steeling himself for the encounter and turning around. He glanced over his shoulder at you. "You don't really think she'd want to be with another guy do you?"
You shrugged, grinning. "Why don't you show her how much you like her, and see for yourself?"
Jeongin marched right over to Mya and Joshua, who were in the middle of a flirty but very awkward conversation.
"Mya, I want to dance with you," Jeongin blurted before Mya could say anything in greeting.
Joshua frowned. "You can dance with her after we're done."
Jeongin glared back at the other guy. "I've been waiting for my turn since I got here, which was hours ago. I'd like to dance with her now."
Joshua glanced down at Mya, whose face was akin to a beet.
"I-I thought you wanted to dance with that other girl!" Mya exclaimed, gesturing wildly to where Jeongin and the girl had been minutes before.
"What other girl? You were dancing with another girl, and now you want to take Mya away?" Joshua demanded. "That's weird, man."
Jeongin scratched his neck, a flush to match his face spreading across it. "Well, I was dancing with a girl. But I don't even know her name, and I didn't even want to be dancing with her to begin with. She just sort of grabbed me and wouldn't let me go. Her nails hurt," he held up his arm to display five moon-shaped marks across his forearm.
Mya gasped, moving toward him and grabbing his arm. "Are you okay?? Those look painful! I didn't know she made you dance with her! I thought-" she stopped, her gaze flicking between Jeongin's arm and his face.
Jeongin raised his eyebrows. "What did you think?"
"I thought you wanted to dance with her instead of me," she mumbled, letting go of him and crossing her arms over her chest.
Jeongin studied her face, realization finally dawning. "There's no one I'd rather dance with more than you, Mya," he said earnestly. "I thought you knew that already."
"Well I didn't! You didn't make it very obvious!" Mya protested. "So I wanted to make you jealous by dancing with someone else. I'm sorry Joshua, that was messed up of me."
Joshua shrugged. "It's alright, I get it. We're at a club anyway, I wasn't looking to get married or something."
"You're a really nice guy," Mya added, looking distraught. "I hope you have fun tonight!"
Joshua grinned at her, and disappeared into the mass of people.
"Sooo... does that mean we can dance now? No more other people? No more making each other jealous?" Jeongin asked.
"No more making each other jealous!" Mya agreed. "But it's kind of cute that you were jealous because I was dancing with someone else."
Jeongin ducked his head. "That's not cute, it's embarrassing! Don't tell the guys or they won't let it go."
"You know I won't tell anyone," Mya put her fingers to her lips as the two of them moved further into the crowd.
That left you standing there all alone, again. Where was Felix? And come to think of it, where was Minho too? You knew Minho might not be the biggest party guy, but you'd assumed he would want to come down and hang out with everyone. Maybe hang out with you. Clearly you'd been wrong.
And Felix.
Well, you'd hoped that he would show up and apologize to you. When you two were young and he would say something that might hurt have your feelings, he would immediately apologize. And if he didn't do that, he would show up a few hours later with candy, or a new plushie for you. He'd always known how to cheer you up, even if he'd made fun of you or laughed at one of Hyunjin's jokes that only brothers could make.
Not that you'd expected him to bring you chocolate and a stuffed animal. That was probably something of the past. But Felix was kind, friendly, and loyal, almost to a fault. And he must have known that what he said to you earlier hurt your feelings.
So why wasn't he here to say sorry?
You frowned, swiping a shot of vodka from a passing waiter's tray and downing it in one gulp. The straight alcohol burned your throat and made your eyes water. You weren't one for hard liquor.
But it gave you the courage to march back toward the door. It was time you found Felix and gave him a piece of your mind. Or five pieces.
But you only got a few steps across the dance floor when you heard voices amidst a huge group of partiers to your right.
"Alaska? Alaska, is that you?" A breathless Lanhua, donning a stunning lavender corset-top mesh dress that hugged all of her athletic curves, approached you. "You might want to see this. I'm kind of worried."
You frowned, setting your empty shot glass on a nearby table. "Okay, yeah, what's up?"
Lanhua pointed wordlessly at the bar, where JJ was serving a drunk man a trio of shots filled with a dark honey-colored alcohol. It was only 11pm, how could someone already be getting that wasted?
But as you looked closer, your eyes widened.
"Oh shit, that's my brother!"
"Yeah, he's ordered about a dozen shots, and he had a Long Island iced tea. Changbin and even Seungmin have tried to stop him, but he won't leave the bar. I think he's got a thing for JJ, because he keeps trying to talk to her."
You could feel your jaw dropping further and further, and you felt the desire to simultaneously laugh out loud and punt your brother fifty miles into the air for being such an idiot. Why did he get to make shitty choices, but you couldn't?
"I'll try and help," you groaned, and Lanhua breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thanks, Seungmin is already with him but he told me to find you. Apparently Hyunjin might actually listen to you," Lanhua shrugged. "When you're finished with him, come over and meet my friends! We're the crazy group in the corner with all the drinks, okay?" She winked before strutting through the crowd, leaving multiple men awestruck and gawking in her wake.
You stared at your brother sitting at the bar, calling JJ over yet again, even though he hadn't even finished the shots in front of him. You didn't think you'd ever seen him in such a state of disarray before, let alone over a girl. It was kind of refreshing, in a weird way.
Would it really be so bad to leave him like that? He certainly looked content. More relaxed than he had in years.
While that was a tempting option, you knew it was probably for the best to check in on him. Hyunjin wasn't usually a huge drinker, but the few times he had, he was known for going a little wild. At one of the parties you'd had back at home that he'd been invited to, you'd found him throwing couch cushions out an open window. He'd been forced to pay for them, of course. As funny as it would be, you didn't want him to embarrass himself in front of JJ, who he seemed to be smitten with.
"How's he doing?" You asked Seungmin as you approached the bar. Seungmin sat next to Hyunjin, trying and failing yet again to take the last shot of liquor from his friend's hand.
"How do you think he's doing?" Seungmin gestured at Hyunjin, who was swaying back and forth on his stool, grinning at JJ like an fool. "He keeps calling that poor bartender over so she can't serve anyone else but him. But she won't serve him until he finishes his order."
"So he's completely fucked up," you confirmed, coming to stand between Seungmin and Hyunjin, studying your brother even closer.
"Hey Laska," Hyunjin slurred, breathing whiskey breath all over you.
Your covertly covered your nose before replying, "Hey Jinnie, how're you feeling?"
"I'm great! Except the bartender won't talk to me. She keeps leaving. Why does she keep leaving?" Hyunjin whined, pointing at JJ with his last shot glass. The alcohol sloshed onto the table, and you groaned. Hyunjin was clearly well past sane.
"She has a job to do," you reminded him. "I'm sure she'd want to talk to you after her shift." You tried to grab the empty shot glass from Hyunjin's hand, but he snatched it back, cradling it to his chest like a doll.
"I want to talk to her now!" Hyunjin exclaimed, nearly toppling out of his seat from the momentum of him grabbing the glass. "Doesn't she like me?"
You glanced at JJ, who was watching Hyunjin out of the corner of her eye as she cleaned a margarita glass.
"Hey!" You mouthed to her.
"What's up?" JJ asked, approaching the trio.
"Would you uh... be willing to watch my brother for the next couple of hours? He doesn't seem to want to leave, and I don't want to make Seungmin sit here all night."
"I don't mind," Seungmin shrugged. "Unfortunately, there's nothing else for me to do except get drunk by myself, and that seems even lamer than making sure Hyunjin doesn't die. But I wouldn't mind having backup."
"I'm sorry," you added apologetically. "You must think my brother is a total idiot, and e be right about that."
JJ shrugged, staring at Hyunjin with an almost fond expression on her face. She didn't seem nearly as grossed out as you thought she might have been.
"I've dealt with worse," JJ replied. "And... he's not the ugliest drunk person I've seen in my life."
You raised your eyebrows. "I don't even want to think about what that means. I can come back and take care of him after I find my friends?"
Seungmin shook his head. "I think we'll be fine without you. For once, it's Hyunjin having a breakdown, not you. Don't get all clingy on him now."
"What do you mean?" You frowned. "I don't get clingy."
"Then take advantage of your bodyguard being out of commission for the night," Seungmin suggested.
You narrowed your eyes at your brother's friend. Seungmin was usually one of the wilder, more out of pocket friends. Was he really telling you to go crazy while Hyunjin couldn't stop you?
You shrugged. "I won't kick a gift horse in the mouth. See you guys tomorrow."
You left your brother in what were two pairs of hopefully trustworthy hands, and headed over to the raucous group of friends in the corner. They were hogging the traveling bartenders, just as Lanhua had said.
"Hey girl!!" Lanhua called from the corner. She was sitting on a black leather couch atop Changbin's lap, who looked like he still couldn't believe his good luck. "Your brother doing okay?"
"Yeah, he's just been trying to flirt with JJ, and getting wasted," you answered, shaking your head. "She and Seungmin are looking after him."
Lanhua let out a full belly laugh. "Damn, JJ's picking up hotties even on the clock! She was complaining that tonight would be no fun for her, since she has to work till one. Sounds like she's having a good time."
"I hope she doesn't have a good time with my brother," you wrinkled your nose. "But it does give me the chance to hang out with you guys and not worry that hes going to drag me back home after one drink."
Lanhua shrugged, wrapping her arms around Changbin's neck. Judging from the rosy flush of Lanhua's cheeks and the wild look in Changbin's eyes, it was clear that they'd both had their fair share to drink as well. Maybe you were the most sober one. Plot twist.
"You look so perfect standing there, in my American Apparel underwear!"
A woman, potentially part of Lanhua's friend group, was standing on the wood table in front of them singing into the microphone at the top of her lungs. Somehow, she managed to hit every single note slightly off-key. You were kind of impressed. She was totally and completely wasted.
"Who is that?" You asked, forcing yourself not to cover your ears out of politeness for Lanhua and the other friends swarming about them.
"Oh, I have no idea," Lanhua shot a loose, fond smile at her friend dancing on the table. Well, trying to dance. It was more uncontrolled arm and leg movement than any sense of rhythm. "She just joined our party and has been singing karaoke since we got here!"
"Oh hell yeah!" You laughed, watching the brunette flail her arms and legs as she screamed out the lyrics to the song.
Before you could ask Lanhua everyone else's names, more people arrived.
"Heyy guys," Han advanced towards your group, an ill-looking Riley in tow. "It looks like all the fun has migrated over here, so we came to check out what was what."
Despite Han's casual words, when you followed his gaze, it was hard-locked on the karaoke girl, who was singing the final lines to the song like it might be her last chance. Which it might, if you had anything to say about it.
"Lanhua, who are your friends?" He asked, tearing his eyes from karaoke girl and down to the girl still sitting on Changbin's lap.
Lanhua went around introducing the dozen or so people milling about their table, before she finally came to the last girl, the one Han clearly had his eye on.
"And I don't know that girl, but she said her names Robin. Want me to call her down?" Lanhua laughed.
Han grinned and nodded, his eyes alight with interest as he looked her up and down.
You glanced over at Riley again, and this time you were immediately concerned. She was holding her stomach and swallowing over and over, like there was something lodged in there that she couldn't get out. Her face had turned from a bright red to a pale gray in a matter of minutes.
"Riley, are-" you started, making a move to grab your friend's hand.
Robin walked toward Lanhua and her friend group, giggling as if something was the funniest thing she'd ever heard. Han opened his mouth and tried to speak, but nothing came out.
But something did come out of Riley's mouth, as she proceeded to vomit all over the floor, and on Han's shiny black shoes.
You gasped, and made a move to reach for Riley and take her outside. But before you could even open your mouth to make sure your friend was okay, a voice, so loud your ears vibrated at the sound, covered the entire club.
"OKAY, THAT'S IT."
