The music was so loud you could actually feel yourself going deaf. The neon strobe lights on the ceiling flashed and spun like bloated fireflies as the DJ at the front of the room created a remix of r&b rap songs that was so chaotic your stomach roiled with nausea. But this was your element. You loved this shit.
And tonight? With your blood boiling, face still burning from the residual embarrassment your brother and a certain idiotic blond guy put you through? You were ready to wreak absolute havoc on this place.
"This is more like it!" Riley practically screamed over the pulsating volume of the music. "The lights are like a fever dream!"
"Is this what being drunk feels like?" Mya called over the noise, tugging at her dress, gauzy strawberry pink number, squinting against the light. "Maybe I should have brought earplugs!"
"I'm already half deaf," you agreed with a giggle. "And being drunk is nothing compared to this."
"Oh boy," Mya sighed, rubbing her hands up and down her arms and shifting back and forth in her white heels.
"C'mon Mya, don't forget our plan for tonight!" Riley nudged her friend. "Even if this isn't your scene, you gotta own it like it is."
"I own everything I do," Mya complained. "But I don't know if I wanna do this."
You linked your arms with both of your friends, your heart pumping with a desire to exact vengeance on all the men in your life. Was it 100% necessary? You had to admit to yourself, and no one else, probably not. But would it be fun? Hell yeah.
Besides, you thought. It couldn't hurt to make Felix realize his mistake. And seeing as he hadn't come up to you and apologized for his asshole-y behavior earlier, you could only assume he either didn't know he'd done something wrong, or wasn't sorry at all. Which one was worse?
You forced yourself to ignore the lump in your throat, and push those irritating thoughts from your head. They wouldn't do you any good, especially tonight.
"It's time to begin step two of the Devious Plan!" You announced to both of your besties, leading them over to the bar. "And that starts with drinks."
"Can I get something fruity?" Mya asked, searching for a menu.
"Mya, they expect you to know your order before you get up here," Riley pointed out.
"I'll order for us," you said, approaching the bartender, who was crouched over putting away a stack of cups on the other side of the bar.
Not wanting to be inconsiderate of her time, seeing as she was probably going to be slammed with customers for the rest of the night, you waited patiently for her to finish up.
When she finally put the last cup in place and turned to face you, you were stunned by her beauty. She wore a strapless velvet black body-con dress with elbow-length gloves to match. With ebony black hair that was tied into a complicated braid around her head, she stared at you with cool fawn-brown eyes. She looked like every man's femme fatale dream come to life.
Leaning against the counter, the bartender raised a perfectly groomed eyebrow. "What do you babes want to drink?"
Instantly a little intimidated, you cleared your throat. "We'll take three strawberry daiquiris, one without alcohol if possible," you replied, smiling at her, hoping she was nicer than she appeared.
The woman tilted her head. "So basically a better strawberry limeade?" She inquired, the whisper of a smile on her bow-shaped lips. She was wearing a glossy shade of fuschia lipstick, a color you didn't think looked good on anyone. Apparently, this woman could pull off anything, and look hot while doing it.
"Yeah, that'd be great," you agreed, glancing at Mya, who was squinting at all of the different kinds of alcohol displayed behind the bar.
"I got you," the bartender chuckled. A dimple on each side of her face, and that mean-girl persona you sensed immediately melted away, giving way to sweet, cool-girl vibes. You instantly felt much more comfortable talking to her.
"I love your hair, how did you get it like that?" You asked her, studying the intricate braid on the top of her head.
Her back turned to you as she bent down to grab three martini glasses, she shrugged. "It was my sister, actually. I can't do shit with my hair but I need it out of my face for work. Once I was making a margarita for some guy - the pretentious asshole type, you know what I mean - and the ends of my hair dropped right in his glass. He threw a whole fit, yelling at me and demanding to speak to the manager, and I had to make him a new one. Then he demanded I comp his bill. What a douchebag."
The woman stood back up, rolling her eyes. "I never wore my hair down again, but my sister has to do it everyday or it ends up in a crappy ponytail."
"I could do your hair," you joked. "I do all of my friends' hair and makeup. I almost went to fashion school, so I learned all the things."
"It's true, if it weren't for her we'd all look like shit," Riley agreed, grinning at you both.
"So not true! I look hot all the time. And I can do my own hair!" Mya piped up. "Sort of." She added after a judgy glance from Riley.
"I'd be so down!" The bartender set all three glasses on the table. "My sister is probably getting tired of me asking every day. Where about do you live?"
"We're just here for vacation, down along the shore in those beach houses," you replied. "You should totally stop by!"
"If you can handle all the hot guys," Riley added.
"One hot guy, and seven idiots," Mya corrected, her eyes clouding over for a second. "Wait, did I just say that out loud?"
You shook your head, smiling at them. "They mean, we're staying with eight annoying idiotic guys. If you don't mind them, then we'd love for you to come over!"
The bartender shrugged. "I don't mind. I have an older brother, and he used to bring his smelly friends around all the time and drive my sister and I insane. I'm definitely used to it."
"Me too!" You exclaimed. "My brother forced himself on our vacation, even though it was our idea."
"It was our graduation, not theirs," Riley complained, and Mya nodded resolutely.
"You all graduated?" The bartender started combining alcohol into a big shaker to create your drinks. "That's fucking awesome! Congrats."
"Thanks!" You replied. "Have you already graduated?"
The bartender sighed. "No, I'm gonna be graduating in the fall. I took a semester off to help take care of my mom when she was sick, so I'm a little behind."
"You'll get there soon," Mya assured her.
"You bitches deserve to celebrate!" The bartender poured your drinks, made sure Mya's was poured from the alcohol-free shaker, and handed them each to you. "Cheers!"
As you were about to pay, the bartender shook her head. "Nah, on the house tonight babes. Call it a graduation present!"
You grinned and took the drinks from her manicured hands.
Before you all turned away, you glanced back at the bartender, who was starting to clean the counter. "I'm Alaska by the way, it's really nice to meet you. You're Lanhua's friend who got us in here, right?"
"Oh shit, I can't believe I didn't introduce myself!" The woman laughed. "I'm Jiah, but everyone just calls me JJ. I've known Lanhua since elementary school. She said y'all were cool. We gotta hang out sometime before you leave!"
The two of you exchanged numbers while Riley and Mya made their way to a table to start on their drinks.
"Text me!" JJ called as you waved, weaving your way between clusters of people who were laughing and dancing.
"She seems nice!" Riley said as you finally made it to your table.
"Her dress is so pretty!" Mya agreed. "I thought she'd be mean, but she wasn't at all."
"So now that we have drinks... how are we going to enact step two of our plan?" You asked, leaning in closer to your friends.
The three of you looked around the club. There were lots of people milling about, talking, and drinking, having a great time. In the right corner, there was a karaoke station where a few groups of friends were already belting out songs with varying degrees of success. Many people were already breaking out their (mostly questionable) dance moves. From just a precursory glance, there were plenty of cute guys who could be willing candidates to flirt with you.
"Where are the other guys?" Mya asked, fidgeting in her seat.
"They said they'd be here after their last game of Mario Kart. I think Changbin might be a sore loser," Riley said, shaking her head. "It's not my fault I beat them all, and I only played three times before ditching."
You took a large gulp of your drink. The chilled, fruity beverage slid down your throat, leaving a warm, tingly sensation bubbling in your stomach. "While we wait for them, should we dance? That might get step two of the Devious Plan started."
"Ooh, good plan," Riley chugged the rest of her drink, wincing a bit, before standing up. "You girls ready to be wowed by my amazing dance moves?"
Mya wrinkled her nose. "I have yet to see these wow-worthy moves you speak of."
You rolled your eyes. "Don't wow us, wow the guys, remember? We're trying to make a few certain men jealous."
Riley nodded determinedly. Mya looked uncomfortable.
The three of you made your way to the dance floor just as a super catchy song started playing from the loudspeakers.
"Oh hell yeah this song is great!" You exclaimed.
Throngs of people pushed against the three of you as you started dancing to the beat. Fueled by the alcohol and the continued anger at Felix and men in general, you started swaying your hips to the beat. You might not be a trained dancer, but you knew how to attract a guy. With your friends at your side, your confidence was practically oozing from your pores. This was how your vacation was supposed to be. No intrusions, no brainless men, no annoying brothers to get in your way.
And based off the many interested looks from men surrounding you, they didn't mind your confidence either. A couple of them whispered to their buddies, eyeing you and your friends up and down, debating whether they should make a move or not. While you were blissfully unaware of their prying eyes, you could feel the heat of their gaze like a heat lamp against your skin.
"I think it might be working!" You whispered Riley and Mya, and they grinned.
"Sooo worth it," Riley agreed.
"It's not the worst thing in the world," Mya said, glancing at a man with kind eyes and perfect lips who was grinning at her a few feet away. She immediately looked away, studying her feet. But the man kept staring with those soft doe eyes, as if he definitely didn't mind what he was seeing.
A super hot guy with wavy brown hair and an adorably self-assured smile was studying you like you were an exam, and he was determined to pass. He winked at you, and you could feel your cheeks heating up with a blush. He would definitely be a fun activity for you to partake in this evening.
Riley was having a staring contest with a guy across the room. He donned a cluster of ear piercings, and silver lip ring glinted red in the laser-beam lights overhead. Despite the intense looks they were sending each other's way, it seemed like there was major mutual interest.
Clearly, he was also the most daring of all the guys in the club, because he started to make a move to walk towards Riley, who stood stock-still, as if she wasn't expecting him to actually do anything about their shared flirtation moments prior.
But the man had barely taken half a step when someone else marched right past him, nearly knocking the man off his feet, coming to stand in front of Riley. Her already-pale skin had gone a shade lighter as she stared up at none other than Han Jisung with a look of shock, admiration, and fury as he grinned down at her with the most cocky expression you'd ever seen. Who was this smooth, poised, sexy man, and what had he done with the weird, dorky, music composer?
"So kind of you to save your first dance for me, R," Han nearly hit his head on the ground as he swept himself into the lowest bow physically possible, before popping back up and kissing Riley's hand with the signature over-the-top charm that made Han, well, Han. He offered his arm to her as if they were attending a regency-era ball, and Riley was the most in-demand princess in attendance.
At the entrance to the bar, Chan was being physically restrained by Seungmin and Changbin. Chan's eyes bored gaping holes into the back of Han's head as he struggled against his friend's grip. If it weren't for Changbin digging in his heels and holding Chan hostage with his Captain America-sized arms, Chan might have escaped and exacted revenge on Han, friendship be-damned.
Riley, completely oblivious to Chan's struggles a few feet away, didn't stand half a chance against Han's charms. You could only watch with amusement as your friend was swept up in Han's obvious and cheesy flirtations. But despite his goofy entrance and crazy words, he had made a move, and he had gotten the girl, hadn't he? Damn, he was good.
Take notes, other men. You thought, attempting not to be bitter.
You turned around to find Mya and complain to her that you wished a guy would do something like that to you, but instead you found her sitting across the club at the bar with the kind-faced guy from earlier. While she was smiling and blushing, a slight tremor played across her lips, before she steadied herself. She seemed to be doing okay, in her own nervous way. You were proud of her.
"Looking for something interesting to do?"
A voice sounded from behind you, and you turned around slowly, feeling a bit of color slide across your face. If it was who you hoped it was, this night could end just as you'd planned.
The tall, handsome guy from earlier stood looking at you, an amused expression playing across his annoyingly kissable lips. Damn, how were Jeju men this hot??
"Might have been," you replied, steadily meeting his warm gaze, alight with interest. "But if you can entertain me, I might not have to."
The man shot you a boyish smile, his already handsome face becoming full-blown gorgeous.
"I can definitely try," he chuckled. "I'm sure you live a very exciting life, I might not be able to keep up."
You laughed, stepping imperceptibly closer to him. "You're right, I am exciting. I wouldn't mind taking you along for the ride, if you're up for it."
Instead of answering, he said, "I'm Huening Kai," before sticking out his large, calloused hand for you to shake.
"It's nice to meet you," you said with a sly smile. But before you could introduce yourself, you heard a gasp, audible even over the lively noise of the club around you. And you knew exactly who it was.
Whipping your head around the room and searching frantically, you finally found her.
Mya, her eyes wide and her face leeched of color, was staring at something behind the man she was talking to, a few yards away from her. Whatever it was, it couldn't be good.
You followed your friend's gaze, and spotted Jeongin standing on the dance floor, smiling and gesturing animatedly. He was stepping side to side to the beat of the song. You wondered why he was there dancing all alone.
Only he wasn't alone.
You looked one foot to his left, and saw another girl, who was giggling and flipping her hair at him. She stood on tiptoe to say something to him, and he leaned down to listen. It didn't take a genius to know that she was flirting with him. And while you didn't think Jeongin was privy to this information, it wasn't looking good for him.
Oh no...
But before you could turn back around and check in on your friend, you watched as she hopped off her stool, ignored the other man's attempts to aid her, and fled out the door, away from the club.
You were about to dash after her without a word, when you remembered Kai, who was still standing next to you, his brows furrowed in confusion.
"Are you okay?" He asked when you finally turned around to face him.
"I-I'm so sorry Kai, but my friend is freaking out over there and I should go check on her," you said, voice dripping with regret.
"Hey, it's okay I get it," Kai grinned earnestly. "Just give me your name and I can find you sometime, if you're down?"
"I'm Alaska!" You said with a distracted smile before starting to push your way through the clusters of people to find your friend.
But as you stood at the entrance to the bar, you decided to turn back, in case Riley might want to join you on your hunt for Mya.
To your right, Riley was still dancing with Han, but her face looked decidedly less than satisfied with her choice of partner. Han was gazing at something - or someone - else on the other side of the room. Chan stood a few feet away, still shooting poison darts at his friend, who didn't seem remotely interested in Riley anymore. To your left, Jeongin still danced - now halfheartedly, you could see - with the same girl, who was basically drooling all over his collared white shirt. You could smell the desperation.
And amidst it all, you couldn't see Felix anywhere.
Your Devious Plan was going to shit.
