"Where's my baby sister?!"
Hyunjin burst through the door, shoved past past Felix and and came to stand by your side, eyes wide with panic. Felix knew you were the only person Hyunjin would ever get that worked up over. He didn't even act that way towards Jeongin, the baby of their friend group. Just sibling things, Felix knew. He would act the same toward his little sister too.
You were propped up in Hyunjin's bed, watching YouTube videos on your phone. You'd forced Felix to watch fashion hauls and styling videos with you for the past half hour, before Felix had gone downstairs to get Hyunjin, despite your protests. Hyunjin, along with the rest of his friends, hadn't known anything was wrong, as they were so wrapped up in playing video games.
"Hyunjin can't see me like this, he'll have an aneurysm!" You'd exclaimed, grabbing onto Felix's wrist in a weak attempt to stop him.
Felix had gone and gotten him anyway, even though he silently agreed with you. And true to character, Hyunjin proceeded to have more than his fair share of a freak out.
You didn't even glance up from your phone at the tone of Hyunjin's voice, not unlike that of an opera singer.
"You were out there, all alone, swimming?! What have I told you about doing something like that? I thought you'd come back in hours ago! And how do you think I felt when Felix came downstairs telling me that you hadn't been at home, but nearly fucking drowned?"
Hyunjin stood in front of you, hands on his hips like a disapproving auntie. He was sort of fulfilling every accusation you had thrown at him on this vacation, being so overprotective and all.
But Felix got it. With both of your parents out of the picture, it had all fallen on Hyunjin's shoulders to be a good brother and take care of you. If Felix had nearly had a heart attack seeing your motionless body floating through the ocean, Hyunjin would be feeling that tenfold.
"Are you even listening to me??" Hyunjin snapped, striding over to you and snatching your phone from your hands.
"What the hell, Hyunjin??" You finally looked up, and those fierce brown eyes could have drilled a hole through concrete.
But of course, being used to those death-glares, Hyunjin didn't back down.
"I was talking to you," he said as politely as he could, but he was speaking through gritted teeth, and Felix could tell he was about to boil over. Hyunjin could be petty and dramatic, but he was usually a chill guy, hard to seriously upset. But again, you were the exception. You were the only one who could really get a rise out of him.
"About what?" Your voice was sickly sweet, your smile smile oozing with genuine sarcasm. "It better be something important, what with you taking my phone from me like a parent would."
Hyunjin balled his hands into fists, but somehow managed to stay calm. "I don't want you going out in the ocean alone like that, Laska. Clearly, it's really dangerous. If Felix hadn't been there to save you..."
He trailed off, gaze falling to the floor, unable to finish the rest of his sentence.
Your eyes softened at this. "I won't go swimming anymore, not without Riley and Mya, okay?"
Hyunjin turned to Felix, whose heart started pounding out of his chest, his cheeks warming and his stomachย suddenly roiling with guilt. Why, he couldn't quite put his finger on. All he knew was that he felt extremely uncomfortable under his best friends scrutinizing stare. Like he'd done something unacceptable or unseemly. Which he hadn't, he tried to remind himself.
Hyunjin clapped Felix on the shoulder so hard he almost stumbled. "Thanks for looking out for my little sister," he said, and the guilt in Felix's stomach formed into an ugly beast, making Felix nearly double over with the uncomfortable sensation.
"I didn't do anything," he mumbled in response.
"You saved Laska, even though you didn't have to," Hyunjin shrugged. "I have no idea how you even found her out there, if what you said was true," turning back to Alaska he added, "You should feel lucky you're alive."
You rolled your eyes, glancing at Felix for some kind of support.
Felix had never felt so ashamed. What made it worse was the fact he wasn't entirely sure why. But the beast of guilt continued to claw at his insides. He felt like the worst friend in the world, and he hadn't even done anything.
Not yet, you haven't. A niggling voice in Felix's mind poked him. And it was at least partially right, wasn't it? The way he'd stared at Alaska running on the beach in that bikini, and the thoughts he'd had hours later, were enough to make Felix want to scrub his brain with steel wool. If Hyunjin ever found out that he'd thought those things about his sister, yes, even while he was saving her from a near-death experience...
Hyunjin would hate him forever.
All the while, both Hwang siblings were staring at him expecting him to choose a side. Felix didn't know what to say. And with Hyunjin's gaze on him, one he knew so well, full of unconditional trust and understanding, the beast inside him finally won.
"It was really dangerous to be out there. Hyunjin's probably right, you could have died if I hadn't found you just then. You need to be more careful. Next time, I won't be there to save you."
The look of hurt in your eyes nearly choked him, but he stood his ground, unable to meet your gaze.
"Well you can both go fuck yourselves," you announced, cheeks bright red as you pushed yourself up from your position in Hyunjin's bed, searing both Hyunjin and Felix with a glare, the bedside lamp reflecting the tears you were just barely holding back, before stalking out of the room.
When you were gone, Hyunjin sighed, thumping Felix on the shoulder again. This time, Felix could barely feel it as he stared at the spot in the bed you'd just occupied, eyes burning. What had he done?
"We're just looking out for her, man. Don't worry about it. She'll come around," Hyunjin gave him a reassuring grin.
Felix nodded numbly. Hyunjin was right, you would forgive them. And what had happened between you two... it had probably gone too far. This was for the better. He was forced to choose a side, and he'd picked his best friend, as it should be. You were only Hyunjin's little sister. Nothing else.
But as Hyunjin started grumbling to himself about having to dry his sheets because of the mess you made, Felix couldn't quite convince himself that was true.

ALASKA
You could feel the hot pressure of tears building behind your eyes as you marched down the hall towards the room you shared with Mya and Riley.
"It was really dangerous to be out there. Hyunjin's probably right, you could have died if I hadn't found you just then. You need to be more careful. Next time, I won't be there to save you."
Felix's words echoed through your head over and over, your throat closing up uncomfortably the more you thought about it.
You needed to be more careful.
If Felix was going to start acting like your brother, he could shove that "care" he demanded of you so much somewhere a lot less pleasant.
You'd expected Hyunjin to be upset and slightly condescending as always, but that was because he was your brother. He got a weird sort of pass when it came to acting like an asshole, because you knew he loved you, and he wanted you to be safe. That made him say things he didn't mean, and you knew that. But Felix?
He has no excuse. You thought bitterly, tears threatening to spill from your eyes once again. But you pushed them away, trying to swallow the lump in your throat that had grown to the size of a pine cone, hard and bristly.
But as you walked past the stairs, you ran into a wall.
A broad, five foot six wall (so would that make him more of a small fence?) to be exact.
"Changbin!" You exclaimed, your voice coming out tight and a little watery. You took a deep breath to center yourself. You hoped he couldn't tell you'd almost broken down. That would be another level of embarrassing, and you wouldn't put it past Changbin to laugh at you. You weren't sure if that would make you feel better or a lot worse.
True to nature, Changbin didn't seem to realize the emotional turmoil you were going through. He grinned at you and flashed his phone screen inches from your face, nearly blinding you with blue light.
"Jesus Bin, give a girl a warning!" You exclaimed, trying to squint and read what it said.
"It's a message from Lanhua!" He said breathlessly, cheeks uncharacteristically pink. "She's invited us all to the club tonight, if we want to go! One of her friends is a bartender there and she said we can get in for free!"
"Did I hear the word "club"??" Riley poked her head out of your shared room a few feet away. "We have to go."
Mya looked at them uncertainly. "Do I have to drink alcohol at the club? And what about drunk people dancing? If you'd be embarrassed dancing sober, you shouldn't dance drunk either, I say. It's weird."
"They have mocktails at the bar, Mya!" Riley pointed out. "And just because you're a good dancer doesn't mean the rest of us are."
"So is that a yes? Can we go?" Changbin demanded, shifting from foot to foot.
You shrugged. Even though you loved going to the club as much as the next girl, it was the furthest thing from what you felt like doing at the moment. Right now, you wanted to lay in bed and have a good cry, and eat a dozen of your favorite mochi donuts while you tried to forget about what a dick Felix was. Which wasn't a sentence you would have predicted to be thinking, like, ever.
"We have to go!" Han cried from the bottom of the stairs that Changbin had just ascended. "I've been wanting to go dancing since we left!"
"I'd like to go," Jeongin agreed. "I've never been to a club before but it sounds like fun."
The rest of the guys downstairs agreed, but you were still on the fence. Why did this have to be the one day in the history of ever that you didn't want to go out?
"Everyone can go to the club, except Alaska."
Hyunjin appeared at the doorway to his room, Felix right behind him. Felix refused to look at you, his usually warm eyes revealing no emotion. You felt your heart ache, but you held your head high and didn't look in his direction.
All of a sudden, your desire to go to the club flipped 180. Now, it was of utmost importance that you go to the club. Fuck Hyunjin and Felix, they couldn't stop you from doing whatever the hell you wanted.
"Well, I'm going," you retorted. "Everyone, get ready and we'll leave in half an hour." And before either Hyunjin or - god forbid - Felix could open their mouths, you stalked to your room, walked in, and slammed the door.
"What was that about??" Mya hissed, glancing at the door, which was still shaking from the force you employed to shut it.
"Let's just say I'm over listening to men, especially ones who claim that they care about me," you quipped, walking over to your suitcase and yanking out outfit after outfit. "Which do you like better? The yellow or the purple?" You held up both options to your friends.
"I like the purple," Riley replied, still raising an eyebrow at you. "I think it gives off bad bitch energy, if that's what you're going for."
"I'm going for whatever would piss Felix off the most," you mumbled, just loud enough for both of your friends to hear.
They exchanged a concerned look, but you didn't catch it.
"Why would you want to piss Felix off?" Mya asked. "I'm all for pissing off guys, but Felix? He's like... the nicest guy in the world. You can't hurt him."
"He's a bunny rabbit," Riley agreed.
You shrugged. "He might be a bunny rabbit, but he's apparently grown fangs and a demon tail," and you proceeded to explain exactly what went down, starting from when Felix saved you from drowning, up to when you marched out of their room.
Both girls stared at you, matching stricken looks painted on their faces.
"Ooh girl, we're gonna make him so jealous he can't see straight," Riley promised.
"How are we gonna do that?" You asked doubtfully. "It doesn't even seem like he likes me. He said he cares about me, but clearly he's only interested in becoming a mini Hyunjin, which I sooo do not need. And besides... how do you know I even want to make Felix jealous?"
A simultaneous look from both of your friends silenced you. Of course you wanted to make Felix jealous. It was about time you at least admitted that to yourself.
"Ooh, I have an idea," Mya said, a wicked smile spreading across her usually innocent face.
"Whoa, I didn't know you could make that face," you said, impressed. "What's your plan?"
You three spent the next twenty minutes plotting while you got ready for the club. You picked out everyone's outfits, and did their makeup and hair while Mya typed out a few key points for tonight's plan (dubbed Devious Plan by Mya, even though you had voted on something even more ominous) in a text on her phone, before sending it to both you and Riley in your group chat.
"Now that I'm reading our ideas... I'm not sure I like our plan," Mya said uncertainly as she scrutinized the message. "Isn't just one enough?"
"Not for me," you and Riley blurted.
Mya laughed and rolled her eyes. "Don't blame me! I'm loyal, okay? I didn't know you guys were going to make me join in."
"You can do the devious plan however you want babes," Riley shrugged. "But step four never fails, if you want to get a guy to like you, trust me."
At the twenty-eight minute mark, two minutes before you had to leave, you were all dolled up and ready to hit the town, your plan burning a hole in your pocket.

laska's note โ
ahhh yes this chapter was mostly setting up for more exciting things to come, but it was a little exciting right? there's definite felaska drama! how do you think it's going to resolve? what's going to happen at the club? it's gonna be crazy that's all i can say! ;)
question of the day โ
why do you read skz fics? do you look more for romance? do you like plot outside romance? or do you like both? pls answer this honestly, because i am planning my minho royalty fic and i have a lot of really awesome plot-heavy ideas, but i wouldn't want to add it all in if people would get bored! it would have a lot of romance and fluff, but part of the plot would focus on a corrupt royal kingdom!
