Felix didn't want to be at the airport so early in the morning. In fact, the only thing that had gotten him out of the house at this ungodly hour was his best friend Hyunjin's promise that he could get a strawberry banana smoothie once they got there. And even though he couldn't find Hyunjin in this huge building, he was sure as hell going to get his smoothie. If his friend was too late to snag one for himself, so be it.
Once Felix got through the line and ordered a large smoothie to go, he sat down at a table to wait. He'd stayed up till 3am last night trying to finish the lyrics to a song he'd been working on for the past week, and he just couldn't figure out the bridge. He always struggled with the bridge. How was it supposed to sound unique, but also bring the whole song together somehow? Definitely his least favorite part of the songwriting process.
"Large strawberry banana smoothie for Felix?" The barista with streaky black and blonde hair called, unrealistic amounts of excitement painting her tone. Felix didn't mind. He supposed that's how they got their tips, right?
Yawning, Felix took the smoothie and started to walk away from the cafe, scrolling through Instagram on his phone. However, his attention was stolen when the incoming call banner appeared at the top of his screen. He sighed in amused exasperation, but answered anyway.
"Dude, where are you??"
Hyunjin's voice blared through the phone speaker, and Felix had to hold it a few inches away from his ear to listen properly.
"I'm at a cafe, getting the smoothie that you promised me!" He exclaimed. "You clearly lied to me, so I had to get one myself. Where did you go? Have you gotten lost already?"
Felix could hear his friend rolling his eyes.
"No, I'm good at directions. The plane is leaving in forty-five minutes, and I'm the only one here! I need company!"
"Okay, I'll be there in a minute! I was just about to walk over there when you had to call," Felix joked, letting out a loud chuckle. "I'll see you in a bit."
"You'd better!" Hyunjin complained, before Felix hung up on him, still laughing to himself at his friend's dramatics. Typical Hyunjin, always making a big deal out of small things. Felix didn't mind. That's what he found endearing about him.
"Felix??"
Felix nearly jumped when he heard his name a few feet behind him. Not because he didn't like meeting people, in fact he enjoyed making new friends. If it was one of his friends he was supposed to be meeting at the airport, he would have greeted them with a huge bone-crushing hug and offered them a sip of his smoothie. (Only a sip though!)
But it had been a woman's voice.
Slightly low, but not masculine. A little sarcastic sounding, but not overly so. Not old, definitely around his age. And there was something familiar about it, too. Was it the lilt? The way she sounded almost incredulous to be meeting him here? Maybe it was someone from university, someone he'd met in one of his classes.
But the voice stirred feelings of nostalgia deep in his stomach, which confused him. While he wasn't one to shy away from his emotions, he wasn't used to this warm, tickly sensation.
"Hello, Felix?"
Felix snapped out of his thoughts and turned around to face this mystery woman.
Right as he turned, he regretted it. Almost. Kind of.
With walnut-toned hair tied into a lazy bun atop your head, whisps of hair windswept and spilling out of the lavender scrunchie like you'd just been running, cheeks slightly flushed, dark brown eyes wide with shock, staring at him.
Pretty.
That was the first thought to fire in his brain. Why would a woman of this caliber be talking to him, let alone recognize him?
The next thought to fire came simultaneously with his words.
"Alaska??"
His voice emerged as a dry croak, as if he hadn't just been guzzling his smoothie like a heathen. He coughed, trying to clear his throat, causing him to choke a little on nothing. What the hell had gotten into him?
"You okay?" You raised your eyebrows at him, cool amusement spreading across your face.
"I- You-" Felix wheezed, coughing a few more times. You reached up and patted him on the back a few times, which just caused the choking to intensify.
When Felix finally recovered from his retching fit, he stood up straight and stared down at you.
You'd changed. And he wasn't so sure he liked it.
He'd remembered you as this adventurous, hilarious, slightly sarcastic and extremely annoying little girl, trying to spoil his and your older brother's good time. From sneaking into the "boys only" treehouse, to stealing all of the snacks that were "only for boys", you'd been a menace. Even all those years ago, Felix couldn't help but admire your spunk, your daring. Your ability to push yourself out of your comfort zone to do the best you could. You were always trying to achieve your goals, even if no one around you felt the same way, or even understood you. You were always unapologetically yourself. Even when you'd gotten braces at age ten, you hadn't minded. You'd worn those hideous things with pride, no matter how often he or Hyunjin had poked fun at you.
But you were different now. What used to be braces were now perfect, white teeth that shined when you smiled in his direction. Ratty hair was now sleek and healthy, even tied up in a haphazard bun. You were still short, but not awkwardly so. He thought it quite fitted you. Very well.
Snap out of it, Felix! He shook his head inwardly, forcing those thoughts to stop. Had he really been thinking about Hwang Alaska, the girl who he'd basically grown up with, as something other than a nuisance? No, he couldn't have been. She'd changed outwardly, that was all. She was certainly still annoying.
"I just didn't recognize you," Felix managed to say, his voice finally coming out normal.
"It's only been what, seven years?" You raised your eyebrows and shoved him, hard, in the arm. "I guess I've really changed, huh?"
Felix rolled his eyes and pushed you back. "Not a bit, Squeak. Let's get to the gate. You want a sip of my smoothie? Strawberry banana is your favorite, right?" He chuckled to himself. It felt good to use your nickname again. Or so he reminded himself.
"No, I'm fine," you muttered under your breath.
Felix shrugged and turned around, heading toward the gate, taking a swig of his smoothie. But as he did, he missed the hurt look in your eyes as you traipsed along behind him.
