eight
Nevermore was doomed, when Wednesday Addams opened her eyes. She felt a heavy weight along her wrists and ankles. It dug harshly into her flesh as she found herself beneath a harsh gaze.
The woman's eyes bore into her very soul, her lips cracking into a smirk as blood ran down her flesh. She looked so peaceful for bleeding out to death, she looked beautiful.
Her eyes were so dark, Wednesday found herself lost in them. "Erna" the name felt like a darkness. It made the woman before her screech into nothingness, like she was upset.
"Erna, you can beat her" Wednesday knew this wouldn't matter. That Erna was far too lost in the abyss, this was a lost cause.
Erna seemed shaken by those words slipping out of Wednesdays lips. The girl was desperate at this rate, she could sense it by the way her lips quivered.
Like she wanted to speak out, like she wanted to seek help from the girl that laid along the floor. Blood coated Wednesday's forehead, it left a dull ache, an uneasiness.
"You can't stop us" Erna sounded so off, like a broken record. "You will burn, all of you will burn!" her voice echoed off the walls. Her gaze darkened even more, her teeth bared.
That glorious smile rose on her lips, she was a crazed woman, but she was still Erna. Deep down inside that broken vessel, it was Erna.
Erna walked away, her footsteps heavy and dragging beneath her. Drips of blood coated the ground as she pushed open a book.
"She's fighting me, trying to beat me. She doesn't even understand the lengths of her powers! She'll grow into nothing once I'm done with her".
Wednesday sneered "what are you toying at?" the woman laughed, and god. Wednesday wished it was Erna who stood before her, not this... monster.
"Oh you're so in love with this girl, aren't you?" she kneeled down gripping Wednesdays face harshly. If her grasp was even a millimeter stronger, she wouldn't be surprised if Wednesday skull caved in. She smiled "do you think she'd mourn you? Do you think she'd beg for your mercy?".
Wednesday glared at her, Erna sighed as she let the girls face go. "You know what I think, I think Erna is weak when she's around you, maybe it's better I just kill you when I'm done with you".
She stood up flipping the pages of the book until she landed on a page. "She always used to tell me. She had these odd moments in her childhood, ones she can't remember, what was the one she used".
She frowned deeply then then "Ah! Flashes! She said it was like flashes of a memory, she was bright once, then something snapped in her. Those kids at the ice rink, they were innocent, but their laughter, their eyes, she enjoyed it. Watching them bleed. Watching them beg her for mercy".
Wednesday pushed herself backward. Hissing when her back slammed into a cold wall. The metal dug into her back, making her body ache.
"She doesn't remember it, that day when she hurt them, when she let the monster out, it attacked until nothing was left, not a single soul, everyone perished. They all burned. But not me... I was there, I watched it all happen, it was beautiful".
Erna smile proudly "she was so amazing, I just knew I needed to get closer to her, to have a taste of that power she possessed, and now here I am, it all worked out in the end. She's mine now".
"There's where you're wrong. Erna will defeat you, and if she doesn't, I will". She giggled as she kneeled down in front of Wednesday.
"Oh you're so determined to help her, it won't matter, because phase two has just begun, it's only a matter of time before nevermore burns!".
"You won't win" Erna smile at those words, like she enjoyed the way Wednesday spoke aloud. "Oh you're wrong. I've already won, even if I don't succeed with burning this place to the ground, at least you'll lose Erna forever, this time she won't return from the grave, she'll perish forever".
With that, she walked away, darkness entering the room as she pushed the door shut with a thud.
Wednesday Addams was utterly alone.
—
She walked with such grace, her eyes glistening with such light as she turned down the corridor. "Erna hey! I was wondering where you were, you missed class, you can borrow my notes if you want". She smiled, her teeth flashing happily as she looked at Xavier "I would love to borrow your notes". He smiled "great, I'll get them for you then, I know you aren't fond of missing notes".
Her mouth slammed shut, her teeth chattering "just put them in my room, I have a few errands to do before I work on missing assignments".
She walked away wiping the blood off her lips "this is utterly ridiculous, she's getting weaker". She stormed out of the building, her eyes darkening as she grabbed a knife out of the ground.
"Seems I'll just have to borrow someone's energy" she put the knife into her pocket. Her feet dragging along the ground as she walked towards the headmasters office.
She knocked and when the door opened she walked inside. "Ah miss Erna, what can I do for you?". She blinked smiling sweetly as she walked inside.
"Oh I was hoping I could go into the town, I know you said it wasn't safe. But I feel like I'm going insane after being stuck inside all week".
She smiled, flashing her teeth as her fingertips wrapped around the handle of her knife. "Oh, I'm not sure that's a good idea. After you're last incident, I don't think it's safe yet".
Erna huffed as she stabbed the blade into the woman's throat. Her eyes darkened "oh well, I suppose it truly doesn't matter".
She pulled the knife out with a harsh tug, the woman's body slamming onto her desk. Heaps of blood coated the room, lining along the edge of her lips, she gagged and then grew silent.
Erna pushed the woman's body off the desk onto the ground. The blood that splattered on her skin didn't phase her, she wiped the blood off the knife blade. Once it was removed she placed it back into her pocket for later.
"Now that problems out of the picture, we can finally start phase three". She laughed maniacally as she walked out of the office.
She hummed lowly as she walked towards the building in which wednesday awaited. Once inside she smiled happily "it's finally time!".
She walked inside grabbing jars of body parts neatly placing them in a circle. "Thanks to Tyler, I have everything I need" she walked towards Wednesday smiling at her.
"You fell right into my trap Wednesday, you really ought to think more carefully. The second you stepped foot here. I made sure Erna saw you. I made sure she became your friend. It wasn't hard, all I had to do was give her a little push, suggest she go outside more. Be with friends more, she saw you on her own, which I'm glad for, made my job a lot easier for a good while".
Wednesday glared at her, "aww did I hit a nerve of yours? Relax, I won't kill you yet, I need you still". Wednesday groaned when she was forced off the ground, the chains dug deeper into her skin.
"I just need your blood" Wednesday was placed onto a stone table. The knife that slammed into her hand burned. Erna hummed as she let the blood flow into a bowl.
For a moment she grew still, like she was fighting then she went back to humming. "Now let's begin the transformation, I would love to let you watch, but I'm quite certain you'd die anyways".
The knife slammed into Wednesdays stomach. She hissed in discomfort when it was tugged out, it was ready to dent her flesh once more.
But then Erna grew still. The knife hovered, her grasp tight on it. Wednesday felt the warmth of tears falling onto her skin, "Erna?".
The girl let out a whimper as she dropped the knife onto the ground. "Wednesday" her voice cracked as she undid the chains around Wednesdays wrists and ankles. "I'm so sorry, i-i don't know how long I have, you gotta get out of here".
Erna let out a heavy breath as she hunched over onto the ground. Wednesday moved forward "Erna" she went to touch her but stopped when the girl looked up at her.
Her eyes were pure red, her jaw cracking loudly as her hands began shaking. "Get out!" her voice sounded monstrous as it bounced off the walls.
Wednesday looked at Erna "I'm not leaving you" she kneeled down in front of the girl. "You can fight this, don't let her win. We can still save everyone".
Erna cried out as her bones snapped "I can't control it Wednesday, please leave!". She leaned into herself, her fingers snapping in half as claws began growing out of her finger beds.
Her teeth chattered loudly as they sharpened, Wednesday grabbed hold of her hand "I'm not leaving you this time". Erna cried out as her back shifted, she heard her bones breaking.
Fur began forming along her skin, her once red eyes began turning pure black. She growled loudly about to strike Wednesday. She was grabbed hold of and moved back quickly.
Ajax let out a heavy breath as he held onto Wednesday "we gotta go! That's not Erna anymore". Erna growled angrily as she stood up.
Wednesday and Ajax ran out of the building "what do we do? we can't let her get to the school". Ajax sighed as he looked at Wednesday.
"We gotta make her turn back, if she's still in there, we can maybe trick her into going back normal, and well if that doesn't work, we gotta kill her".
—
The deep growl that bounced off the atmosphere had everyone at nevermore running. While they had some time to prepare for a fight, they were still clueless as to what they were up against.
The growl grew closer and students screamed when the wall began crumbling down. Stone clashed into the floors as students ran in search of an exit.
"Hey! Over here!" the creature turned around, wednesday glared at it as she held tightly onto the sword she claimed. She stood her ground, ready to attack at any second.
The creature ran towards her about to swing but Wednesday acted fast and dodged in time. The creature screeched angrily "Erna, if you're still in there, fight back, don't let it control you".
It growled angrily as it ran towards Wednesday once more. This time it managed to hit her, the girl flew backwards harshly. Slamming into a path of grass, she groaned as she looked at the creature.
She stayed on the ground, the creature ran towards her fast and then it grew still. Wednesday let out a shaky breath as she pushed her sword deeper into the creatures chest.
It let out a low growl as it's form began shifting. Wednesday pulled the sword out "we can still save her Wednesday, we can still help her".
Ajax looked desperate as he looked at Wednesday deep down he knew Erna needed to die, but he couldn't accept it. He couldn't lose her, she was all he had, she was like family.
Wednesday let out a heavy breath as she looked at Erna, she looked so peaceful. Even with that darkness in her eyes, "don't save me".
She looked up when Erna spoke, her voice was so silent "don't save me". Ajax let out a deep sob "Wednesday don't do it! Please! We can still help her, we'll figure it out! There's always a way!".
Wednesday looked at Erna, she truly looked at her, that darkness in her eyes was still there, deep down. She knew this wasn't her Erna. This would never be the Erna she knew, perhaps Erna was gone.
Deep within this vessel she was there, she was watching and she was begging for an end. "Don't save me" those words, they were like flashes of a dull ache, they were Erna.
Whatever was left of her, it was those words, three simple words. They weren't the ones Wednesday yearned for, they weren't forgiveness.
"I forgive you, please save me, don't kill me, wednesday help me!".
"don't save me"
Wednesday stabbed the sword into Ernas chest, Ajax screamed out loudly. Wednesday let out a heavy breath as she looked at Erna.
"You can't trick me anymore" Wednesday watched as the darkness faded away in Ernas eyes. It was beautiful, peaceful. Erna gagged as blood slipped out of her lips. Wednesday pulled the sword out and let Erna fall into her arms.
The girl let out a weak breaths as she held onto Wednesdays hand. Wednesday blinked, "I'm sorry" she whispered it into the girls ear.
Erna grew still, her breaths no longer in the air. Ajax watched as his best friend burst into flames. Wednesday stood up moving away.
Ajax let out a sob "she's actually gone". The world grew silent, they had saved everyone, but at what cost? They've never felt more defeated.
—
The bedroom was neat, for the world almost crashing and burning. Her bedroom was still neat, it was still Ernas presence that filled the room. Wednesday walked inside, looking at all the posters and little photos that were pinned to the wall.
So many moments, so many memories. She looked at all the pictures, her eyes looking over ever single detail of Ernas face. She walked towards the trashcan lifting a dress out of it.
"She would've wanted you to have that, she picked it out for you". Wednesday looked at Ajax who now stood outside the doorway, he couldn't bring himself to walk in yet.
Not when he knew it was empty, when he knew Erna wasn't here. Wednesday ran her fingers along the cloth Ajax sighed as he walked inside.
He held tightly onto a box, "they wanted to clean her room out, throw out all her things, but luckily they're letting me keep her things. Enid said she'd take the clothes that she wanted".
He walked towards the wall unpinning a photo of him and Erna. "This was the first time she let me take a photo of her. She wasn't fond of photos, claimed she wanted to live the moment, this is the only photo I have of her".
He sighed deeply as he put it into the box, "I can't do this, I can't pretend she wasn't real, am I meant to continue like she was this monster? Is that how we honor her? She'll be a story inside a book, a monster labeled by nevermore, and we'll be the only ones who knew she wasn't a monster".
He pinched his eyes closed tears slipping out of them. "She was my best friend, and I'm not even allowed to say anything about her, the second you drove that sword into her chest. She seized to exist, everyone is terrified of her, I mentioned her name outside and everyone pretended like she just was never here, because it's easier to forget the monster who tried killing everyone. She wasn't a monster".
He let out a heavy breath as he kept putting posters and random photos into the box. He put the box down on the bed "I'll finish later, I need a minute".
He walked out of the room and Wednesday could hear his sobs as he walked down the hallway. Wednesday walked towards Ernas desk noticing two envelopes neatly atop one another.
wednesday and ajax
Wednesday grabbed the one with her name and opened it. A necklace flew out of it and she grabbed hold of it. She looked at the letter.
I'm a monster, I can't tell what's real anymore. But I do know one thing, you were real. Wednesday Addams, you were an actual human being, who saw me, as normal... who didn't treat me like I was a freak or something not normal. I've spent so many years at nevermore, and yet I still feel like I don't belong here, you helped me understand, that I'm not some monster. That I can help people. You helped me see that I'm Erna! I'm me and not this monster who is going to kill everyone. I don't know how much time I have left, I'm writing this while I have control still, you're there... on the ground, hurt, it's all my fault. She'll take you somewhere, she'll kill you, i don't think I'm even me anymore, I feel myself fading when you face her, well me... don't hesitate to kill me, it's not me anymore. don't save me Wednesday, please don't save me. do not mourn me... i was a monster, I leave you with one last thing. My necklace, it has my name, I took it off when I felt myself slipping away. Erna... that name is the me you knew, it's the name of the girl who loved you, which I know, lame. It's the name of the girl who wasn't strong enough, who failed. Keep it close to your heart, I imagine even in death, that name will only matter to you and Ajax, everyone else will hate me, hate that name...
I'm sorry for being a failure,
do not mourn me, don't throw me a funeral.
Let me burn, i do not wished to be honored,
Remembered, Erna is dead, she's never coming back, my soul is gone...
I don't know who I am anymore...
Wednesday, I'm scared.
The last word was smudged, it was left unfinished, Wednesday looked at the necklace in her hand. Erna was gone. Truth be told part of Wednesday always knew she was gone.
She knew she couldn't save her, she clasped the necklace around her neck and left the room. Wednesday walked down the hallway entering her room. Her suitcases were neatly on her bed.
She grabbed them and left, she didn't look down the hallway at Ernas bedroom door. She walked down the steps, and walked towards the exit.
She knew if she came back, that pressure of Erna would always be there. She got into the back of the car, her suitcases being put in the trunk.
She kept thinking about Erna. Part of her missed the girls company, she wished she had saved her, that she went against her wishes and helped her.
She had wished she could see the girl one last time, the real her, she wouldn't even know what to say. Even if she was silent, she wished she saw her.
the ground shock with such force that everyone felt it, the twisted grasp of death clinged in the air as fingers pried into the atmosphere. Dirt clustered underneath finger nailbeds as soft breaths entered the air.
A figured appeared along the lands. Sharp eyes snapping open and a light grin rising along the surface. Wednesday pondered alone in the safety of her car as they drove away from nevermore.
While she was rather surprised by the messages she received some many thoughts crossed her mind as the car stopped completely.
Bones snapped loudly as fingers wrapped around the car handle. The door handle broke at impact.
Wednesday looked outside her window, eyes crashing with someone's. Flesh mended itself back together, blood flowing. Jaw snapping into place.
Air returning and overall life once more. The door opened and the figured kneeled down, sharp teeth flashing as she smiled.
Her hair was messy and tangled, it's once bright color, dull and dark. She sat inside her lips cracking as she closed the door.
Eyes clashed once more, the dark gaze burning into Wednesday's flesh as she pondered the question.
"erna..." the figure snapped her fingers, her gaze boring into Wednesday's very soul. Then Wednesday grew still "you're not her...".
the end: to be continued?
season two? maybe?
