YOHAN PUT HIS PHONE DOWN AS HE HEARD KIYOMI KNOCK ON THE DOOR. he got up and dragged his feet towards the door to his and hendery's apartment.
he opened it to reveal kiyomi holding her baby in one arm and a baby bag in the other. "hi," she smiled.
"hey," yohan said. he moved to the side to let the girl in.
"thanks for this," kiyomi said. "i wouldn't have done it, but my friends managed to convince me."
"that's one thing we have in common," yohan muttered as he trailed after kiyomi. he watched as kiyomi placed the baby bag on the armchair and take a seat in the couch next to it.
"hm?" kiyomi hummed as he looked up.
yohan shook his head as he took a seat next to kiyomi. "nothing," he said. "just tell me what to do while you're gone."
kiyomi nodded. she began to explain how to care for her son and yohan couldn't help but stare.
it is true yohan had a little crush on kiyomi back when they were in high school, so it was very surprising to see the girl and how much she changed. kiyomi was always stunning, but if possible, she got prettier since he last saw her.
however, yohan has no idea why he's feeling so uneasy in her presence. he didn't feel this way back when he thought miura kiyomi was mun kiyoung.
(when he found out they were the same person, he almost beat himself up for it. because, how could he be so stupid to not know they were the same person?)
it's not like he hates her. he barely knows her. they didn't talk much after they entered high school and obviously they didn't talk after high school. so how come he feels this way?
unfortunately, yohan couldn't dwell on this too long because now kiyomi and yuki looked at him with identical expressions, wide eyes and expecting.
yohan cleared his throat loudly. "yeah, got it," he said.
"i wrote it down in case you forget anything," kiyomi said, as if sensing that yohan was not paying attention at all. "it's in the front pocket of the baby bag."
yohan nodded. this left the two in an awkward and extremely uncomfortable silence.
"so, how's it going?" yohan asked, cringing as his voice cracked.
"how's what going?" kiyomi asked.
"i dunno, just...life, i guess," yohan shrugged.
"oh. okay," kiyomi said, bouncing yuki up and down on her leg. "it's been okay. what about you?"
"been okay," yohan nodded.
"okay," kiyoko sighed, leaning back into the sofa.
"what's to important about today that you just had to have a babysitter?" yohan asked, eyebrows raised in curiosity. there was, after all, a reason he was doing something hendery should be.
kiyomi's fav flushed a bright pink, turning to to her babbling son instead of making eye contact. "uh, work people invited me to brunch," kiyomi answered.
"ah," yohan nodded. "brunch. understandable."
"yah!" kiyomi exclaimed, shoving yohan's shoulder. "it's just this thing, you wouldn't understand."
"you saying yes to a gathering where you're all alone with people you barely met is something to celebrate," yohan said. kiyomi made a surprised noise next to him. he turned around and saw the girl look at her with an equally as surprised expression. "what, did you forget that i grew up right next door?"
"i didn't forget," kiyomi said. "i just never thought you noticed me much to know that kind of stuff."
oh. well.
that was not what yohan thought would come out of her mouth.
how could he not notice her? kiyomi was all that yohan noticed when they were younger.
"yeah well, everyone's a surprise," yohan muttered.
"i'm sorry if this is too awkward," kiyomi apologized. "i just like knowing the babysitter before leaving yukinari alone."
babysitter, yohan thought bitterly. he doesn't know why that word made him so mad. of course he's just a babysitter to kiyomi. they're practically strangers right now, after years and years with no contact.
"yeah, of course," yohan said. "makes sense."
yohan shifted uncomfortably, feeling the weight of the silence pressing down on them. he glanced at kiyomi, who was now fidgeting with the hem of her shirt, and then at yuki, who seemed oblivious to the tension in the room as he played with his tiny fingers.
"so, um, how's yuki been?" yohan asked, trying to break the awkwardness with a question about the baby.
kiyomi looked up, seemingly grateful for the change in topic. "he's been good, mostly. he's teething though, so he's been a bit cranky lately."
yohan nodded. "i remember my little cousin went through that."
"yeah, it's challenging, but we'll get through it," kiyomi said softly, her eyes drifting back to yuki with a fond smile.
a moment passed as they both watched yuki play with a small toy. yohan found himself unexpectedly drawn to the innocence and simplicity of the scene-the mother and her child, the bond between them palpable even in such mundane moments.
"you know," yohan began tentatively, "it's kind of nice, seeing you like this. as a mom."
kiyomi's gaze flickered up to meet his, surprise mingled with curiosity in her eyes. "yeah?"
"yeah," yohan said, feeling a small smile tug at his lips. "you seem... really good at it."
kiyomi's cheeks tinged with a faint blush, and she looked down at yuki again, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "thanks. it's been a journey, for sure."
"i can imagine," yohan replied, suddenly feeling a wave of respect for kiyomi. she had changed since high school, matured in ways he hadn't anticipated. it was humbling to witness.
another silence settled between them, this time less awkward and more contemplative. yohan found himself thinking about how life had led them to this moment-two people from the same neighborhood, connected by memories now distant yet somehow vivid in this shared space.
"well," kiyomi finally broke the silence, her tone gentle, "i should get going. i've got to catch my ride."
yohan nodded, standing up to see her off. "yeah, of course. i'll take good care of yuki. don't worry."
"i know you will," kiyomi said with a grateful smile, placing yuki in his baby carrier. "thanks again, yohan."
as yohan closed the door behind her, he leaned against it for a moment, processing the unexpected morning he had just experienced.
yohan stood in the middle of the living room, staring at yuki who lay peacefully in his carrier. he cleared his throat nervously, feeling a bit out of his element. "okay, yuki," he muttered to himself, "let's figure this out."
he cautiously approached the stroller and peered in, noticing yuki's tiny fingers curling around the edge. "hey there, little guy," yohan said tentatively, unsure if babies could even understand words. "um, how are you... doing?"
yuki gurgled in response, kicking his legs happily. yohan jumped slightly at the unexpected sound. "right, okay, you're good," he muttered, not entirely convinced.
he scanned the room, trying to remember the instructions kiyomi had left. "okay, first things first," he muttered, reaching for the baby bag. he fished out a small notebook and flipped through it. "feed him... change him... entertain him," yohan read aloud, his voice trailing off uncertainly.
"alright, feeding," yohan announced to yuki, who seemed more interested in his own fingers than in the babysitter's monologue. "uh, where's the... baby food?" yohan rummaged through the bag, hoping he wouldn't have to resort to calling kiyomi for help so soon.
after what felt like an eternity of searching, yohan finally found a bottle nestled in the side pocket of the bag. "aha!" he exclaimed triumphantly, holding it up as if he had discovered buried treasure. he glanced at yuki, who was now staring back at him with wide eyes.
"okay, buddy, time for some... milk?" yohan hesitated, unsure if babies drank milk from bottles or if it was formula. he decided to go with his gut and poured some water into the bottle, hoping kiyomi wouldn't mind if he got this wrong.
yuki squirmed as yohan awkwardly tried to position the bottle in his mouth. "there you go," yohan encouraged, feeling a small sense of accomplishment as yuki started sucking on the bottle.
as yuki drank, yohan watched him intently, as if waiting for the baby to give him some sign of approval. "so, uh, how's the milk?" yohan asked, feeling ridiculous for talking to a three-month-old.
yuki didn't respond, of course, but continued to feed peacefully. yohan sighed in relief, realizing he might be getting the hang of this babysitting thing after all.
"alright, buddy, almost done," yohan said encouragingly as yuki finished the bottle. he carefully burped him, following a vague memory of seeing someone do it once in a movie.
after a few pats on the back, yuki emitted a small burp, causing yohan to grin proudly. "success!" he exclaimed quietly, trying not to wake the sleeping baby.
yuki yawned and snuggled against yohan's chest, making him freeze in surprise. "uh, are you okay there?" yohan asked, unsure what to do with a suddenly cuddly baby.
yuki closed his eyes and seemed to settle into a more comfortable position against yohan. "i guess you're comfortable," yohan muttered, feeling oddly touched by the baby's trust.
he found himself gently rocking back and forth, trying to mimic what he had seen kiyomi do earlier. "you know, yuki," yohan said softly, "you're not so bad."
yuki shifted slightly in yohan's arms, his small fingers curling against the fabric of yohan's shirt. yohan felt a surge of tenderness as he looked down at the peaceful expression on the baby's face. "you know, buddy," he whispered, "i wasn't sure how this would go, but you're doing great."
yuki stirred slightly, and yohan wondered if he was dreaming. "i bet you've got big dreams, huh?" he continued softly, feeling a bit silly but unable to resist. "maybe you'll be a world explorer, discovering new lands and making friends everywhere you go."
the baby sighed softly in response, and yohan couldn't help but chuckle. "or maybe you'll be an actor, fulfilling your mommy's dreams," he mused, "playing in musicals and stuff, just like she did."
yuki's eyelids fluttered, and yohan paused, unsure if he should continue. "you're probably wondering who this big guy is, talking your ear off," he said gently, tracing the outline of yuki's tiny ear with his fingertip. "well, i'm yohan. and i promise to figure this out with you, step by step."
the room seemed quieter now, filled only with the soft sounds of their breathing. yohan glanced around, noticing the early evening light filtering through the curtains. "looks like it's just you and me for a little while," he said, feeling a sense of calm settle over him. "we'll make it an adventure, right?"
yuki let out a small coo, and yohan smiled, his heart lighter than it had been in a long time. "yeah," he murmured, "an adventure."
