chapter one - "You guys finally going to kill me?"
⋆·⋆
Melanie Meri sat on her living room couch watching Clueless. A tradition she did every school year. She reached her hand into the popcorn bowl only to realize there was none left. She huffed before throwing her blanket off and walking into the kitchen with her bowl. She placed the popcorn into the microwave. But before she could start it she heard a crash.
"Sebastian! How many times to I have to tell you-" She started but stopped once she heard footsteps.
She grabbed the closed object which was a wooden spoon. And she tip toed over the sound and swang hearing the footsteps right next to her.
"Ow! Melanie stop ─ stop hitting me!"
She stepped back holding the spoon to her side while giving the boy in front of her a death stare. "Stiles, how'd you get in my house?"
He pulled out a key and dangled, "I made a key,"
"He almost got hit with a baseball bat when he got me." Scott said behind him.
She shook her head, "Did your phone's suddenly not work? You know you could have called me." She said crossing her arms. "We tried you didn't answer," The Stilinski boy replied. "Now come on," He said pulling the girls arm's.
"Wait," She swatted his arm's away, "Where are we going?"
"The woods." He said before walking off as she rolled her eye's before looking at Scott. "You guys finally going to kill me?"
🧜♀️
Mel rode in the front with Stiles as he drove towards the Beacon Hills Preserve where the other half of the body was yet to be found. Scott was in the back seat, peering out the window. That's when she noticed a scared expression. "You scared?" She asked, grinning innocently as Scott laughed sarcastically.
"No, I just can't believe I'm missing an early night for this," The puppy dog eyed boy muttered, making her laugh lightly. "That is what's coffee for," She responded before leaning back in her seat.
Stiles turned the jeep's engine off as the headlights pointing at the 'Beacon Hills Preserve. No Entry After Dark' sign darken.
All three teens pilled out of the vehicle as Scott looked between his two best friends, "We're seriously doing this?" He asked nervously. "You're the one always bitching that nothing ever happens in this town." Stiles answered, throwing another flashlight towards her, heading into the Preserve.
"I was trying to get a good night's sleep before practice tomorrow," He complained.
"Right, cause sitting on the bench is such a grueling effort," Stiles sarcastically remarked. "No, because I'm playing this year. In fact I'm making first line,"
"Hey, that's the spirit," Stiles commented. "Everyone should have a dream, even a pathetically unrealistic one."
"Like Jackson Whittemore wouldn't kick your ass as soon as you walked onto the field," Stiles remarked. "And this is why I don't do sport's." She added hitting her light to try and fix it.
"Just out of curiosity, which half of the body are we looking for?" Scott asked changing the subject. Mel looked between to two, "Wait, what?!" They all stopped for a moment sharing the same confused look "Huh! I didn't even think about that."
"And, uh what if whoever killed the body is still out here? "
"Also something I didn't think about."
Scott glanced towards the Meri teen as she smiled patting his shoulder, "I'm sure you'll find out when they have a chainsaw to your stomach. Or maybe it's like a Saw situation?" She exclaimed.
"Thanks Melanie that's, uh, really helpful." He remarked
"Anytime Scotty McFly," She replied, climbing up a steep hill after the Stilinski boy, he followed the burnette girl. "Maybe the severe asthmatic one should be the one holding a flashlight, right?" He wheezed as she turned around to see him leaning against a tree, using his inhaler. Stiles suddenly tugged onto the girl's hand as her and Scott tumbled down to the floor besides the overly hyper Stilinski. All three peered out deeper into the woods to see a group of police officers, including Sheriff Stilinski. Stiles' eyes beamed with excitement and he leapt to his feet, "Hey, come on!"
"Stiles!" Scott yelled just to see Mel race after her bestfriend. "Melanie! Wait up! Guys!"
The Stilinski and Meri teen's raced between the trees, occasionally looking over at the officers to see if they had spotted them. When Scott had yelled out their names once more that's when the two realized they'd left their best friend behind. "Sc-" Mel went to say as a dog bark had the two scrambling to the floor and an officer shined his flashlight at the two teens.
"Hold it right there!"
"Hang on, hang on," Sheriff Stilinski's voice called out, glancing between Melanie and Stiles in annoyance. "This little delinquent belongs to me."
Stiles stumbled to his feet, helping her up as he eyed his father with a sheepish smile, "Dad, how are you doing?"
He turned to his son, "So, do you, uh listen in to all of my phone calls?"
"No," Stiles answered, receiving a pointed look from his father. "Not the boring ones,"
"I see you dragged one of your friends out here, so where's the other partner in crime?"
"Who Scott? Scott's home. It's just us, in the woods. Alone." Stiles said with a nervous laugh.
"Yup, just Stiles and I in the woods." She said before realizing how bad that sounded.
The Sheriff didn't believe their lies, "Scott, you out there?" He called out raising his voice into the dark Preserve only to get no answer. "SCOTT?"
Sheriff Stilinski sighed, not seeing any sign of Scott. He grabbed onto the back of his son's neck while gesturing for Melanie to follow while guiding them out of the preserve. "Well, young man and woman, I'm gonna walk you back to your car... And you and I are gonna have a conversation about something called invasion of privacy."
🧜♀️
"Okay, let's see this thing," Stiles said hinted as him and Mel watched closely as Scott lifted his shirt slightly, revealing a large white band-aid. That was stained with blood because of the bite mark on his side. "Ooo!"
"It was too dark to see much, but I'm pretty sure it was a wolf," Scott explained, picking up his rucksack.
"A wolf bit you?" Stiles asked. "Uh-huh," Scott hummed nodding. "No, not a chance," Stiles chuckled. "I heard a wolf howling," He argued back.
"No, you didn't," Stiles denied shaking his head.
Scott scoffed, "What do you mean, No I didn't? How do you know what I heard?"
"Because, California doesn't have wolves," She cut in, getting tired of the argument between the two. "Not in like 60 years."
"Really?"
"Yes, really,"
"Alright, well, if you don't believe me about the wolf, then you're definitely not gonna believe me about when I tell you I found the body." He explained making them both widen their eye's in excitedly, "Are you kidding me?" they asked in sync.
"No guys, I wish. I'm gonna have nightmares for a month,"
"Oh, go that is freaking awesome," Stiles praised. "I mean, this is seriously gonna be the best thing that's happened to this town since..." The hyperactive teen quickly got distracted by the beautiful red haired girl walking by as his eyes followed her every move.
"Since the birth of Lydia Martin. Hey Lydia, you look..." He trailed off as she didn't give him a chance. "...Like you're gonna ignore me." Stiles spun back around to face his two best friend, his accusing eyes darting between the two, "You two are the causes of this, you know."
"Uh-huh," Mel nodded along, sharing a knowing look with Scott.
"Dragging me down to your nerd depths. I'm a nerd by association," Stiles continued as all three teen's headed into the high school just as the bell ranged. "I've been scarlet nerded by you two."
🧜♀️
Melanie sat in front of Scott in English as she twirled her pencil around her fingers listening to whatever Mr. Curtis was babbling on about today. "As you all know, there indeed was a body found in the woods last night." He began.
Scoot grin looking over at the two, Stiles wink at the boy and Mel snauch her nose up as in 'gottcha'.
"And I am sure your eager little minds are coming up with various macabre scenarios as to what happened. But I am here to tell your that the police have a suspect in custody, which means you can give your undivided attention to the syllabus, which is on your desk outlining this semester."
She sighed looking down at the paper reading it, until she heard the door open. She silently thanked whoever it was before looking up. "Class, this is our new student, Allison Argent. Please do your best to make her feel welcome," The Principle spoke up and Allison walked between the rows of desks and came to sit behind Scott, giving the trio a small and friendly smile. Stiles returned it awkwardly as Mel remembered basic human function and smiled back.
She than went back to paying attention to Mr. Curtis again as he resumes his lesson, "We'll begin with Kafka's Metamorphoisi on page one-thirty-three."
🧜♀️
The three stood by Scott's locker, Stiles tried talking to Melanie but she just grinned at Scott. Who's puppy eyes trailed over to Allison, who stood at her locker and she turned around locking eyes with him, sending the boy a sweet grin.
"Can someone tell me how new girl is here all of fiver minutes, and she's already hanging out with Lydia's clique?" Harley, a girl in their English class, asked.
"Because she's hot. Beautiful people herd together." Stiles rambled getting a slap from Mel. "Ow! Why the physical abuse?" She glared at him, "Okay, fine you're pretty, there you happy?"
"No actual I did that because you rambled." She remarked before looking between the two and shook her head. Tuning out everyone's conversations as she was focused on Friday, the moon. Something that has been waiting for days. The one night out of every month were she could be her complete full self.
🧜♀️
"But if you play, I'll have no one to talk to on the bench. Are you really gonna do that to your best friend?" Stiles complained. "But you'll have me," Mel smiled innocently at the two as they both ignored her comment. "I can't sit out again. My whole life is sitting on the sidelines," Scott answered, "This season, I make first line."
"I say do it, I mean it won't kill you, right?" Melanie said as Scott made his way onto the field. "He's gonna get killed out there, huh?"
"In the most brutal way possible," Stiles agreed, nodding as he sat down on the bench next to her.
The lacrosse players stood in their positions and she clenched her fist closer, seeing Scott was goal; a position he had never been in. Ever. 'Oh no,' She thought sighing lightly as the staring whistle blew as Scott doubled over in pain, clutching at his helmet, grunting. The first player ran forward and threw the small ball towards him, hitting the teen in the head. Sending Scott falling backwards into the goal.
"Oh," Both Stilinski and Meri teen groaned seeing the event.
The next guy ran forward and threw the ball as she held her breath, just for Scott to catch it effortlessly. Mel and Stiles were the first two to cheer their best friend on, both shocked at his sudden talent, "Yeah!"
This continued for four more times, Scott catching every ball the players threw his way. "I thought he was terrible?" The Stilinski teen said as she quickly shoved a finger into his face, shushing him. "Don't jinx it he's on a roll." She said only to see Jackson storming his way to the front of the line, angry. "Spoke to soon,"
Jackson sprinted forward with a set jaw and leaped into the air, taking his shot. Mel watched as the ball traveled and landed into Scott's lacrosse stick net. The two leaped from the bench and cheered loudly, earning attention from most of the other students and half the team. The crowd started to cheer.
🧜♀️
Scott, Stiles and Melanie were trudging through the creek inside the preserve, in an attempt to find Scott's inhaler which he dropped the night before. The two were both still shocked at their best friend's sudden new talent.
"I don't know what it was. It was like I had all the time in the world to catch the ball," He explained, jumping over the small river, the twins followed. "And that's not the only weird thing. I can hear stuff I shouldn't be able to hear. Smell things,"
"Smell things? Like what?" Stiles asked.
Scott sniffed turning back towards the two brunettes. "Like the Mint Mojito gum in your pocket, and the seaweed chip in Mel's back pocket." He stated as Stiles raised his eye brows. "Nice try, I don't have Mint Mojito." He trailed off watching as he pulled out a piece of gum from one of his jacket pocket and the two turned to the Meri girl.
She scoffed before reaching into her back pocket and pulling piece's of a seaweed out. "So what I almost always have seaweed," She waved off.
Stiles paused for a moment, "So all this started with the bite."
"What if it's like an infection, like my body's flooding with adrenaline before I got into shock or something?" Scott asked. "You know what? I actually think I've heard of this. It's a specific kind of infection," Stiles said nudging Melanie a bit to follow along at what he was getting at at.
Scott soon stopped walking and turned around, "Are you serious?"
"Yeah," He confirmed, "Yeah, I think it's called lycanthropy."
"What's that? Is that bad?" Scott asked starting to panic.
"Absolutely, it's the worst," She chipped in, "But only once a month," Stiles added.
"Once a month?"
She hummed nodding, "On the night of the full moon," The two shared a mischievous look before howling like wolves. Scott pushed past them both soon realizing that the two were messing with him. They both laughed and followed after Scott, "Hey, you're the one who heard a wolf howling." Stiles said.
"Hey, there could be something seriously wrong with me," He exclaimed worried.
"You're a werewolf!" She laughed, her and Stiles mimicked a wolf's growl. Scott glared at them, "Aw Scooty, don't look at me like that. We are obviously kidding, right Bub?"
"Absolutely," Stiles nodded smirking, "But if you see me and Sunshine Bright here in shop class trying to melt all the silver we can find, it's cause Friday's a full moon."
Scott suddenly stopped walking and started looking around confused, "No, I could have sworn this was it. I saw the body, the deer came running. I dropped my inhaler."
"Maybe the killer moved the body," Stiles suggested.
While Scott crouched down, searching beneath the dried out leaves. "If he did, I hope he left my inhaler. Those things are like 80 bucks," He complained.
Stiles suddenly slapped both of their arms, looking out at he woods. She looked up and noticed a brooding dark figure standing a few feet away. "What are you doing here?" He demanded as they all looked between each other, panic visible on all their faces. The man's patient grew thinner, "Huh? This is private property."
Stiles opened his mouth as Melanie quickly covered his mouth to make sure nothing stupid came out that would get them called. "We didn't know, sorry, we'll leave." She explained quickly.
His attention than focused on Scott, "Yeah, we were just looking for something, but..."
The guy than tossed Scott his inhaler, looking Mel up and down tilting his head before disappearing to wherever he had came from.
"Um....All right than, come on, I gotta get to work." Stiles threw his hands out blocking the other teens from moving, "Dude, that was Derek Hale!" He exclaimed excitedly.
"That's why I thought he looked familiar," She exclaimed finally knowing why he looked so familiar but saw Scott's face still confused.
"You remember, right? He's only a few years older than us."
Scott frowned, "Remember what?"
"His family. They all burned to death in a fire, like ten years ago." Scott looked both intrigues and concerned while Mel shook her head at the over hyper teen. "I wonder what he's doing back.." Scott said trailing off. "Come on,"
🧜♀️
"No, they're still questioning people, even Derek Hale." Stiles informed.
"Oh, the guy in the woods that-"
"Yeah! Yes, but that's not it, okay?" Stiles exclaimed flaring his arms. "What, then?" Scott asked before his head turned towards the door as he got up and opened it raveling a Melanie who was just about to knock.
"How'd you-?" She asked walking in, "Never mind." Stiles had told her about everything that happened with Scott on the field earlier and even she was just as confused.
"Okay back to what I was saying befoer. Remember the joke from the other day? Not a joke anymore. The wolf -- the bite in the woods. We started doing all this reading. Do you even know why a wolf howls?" Stiles asked standing up.
"Should I?"
"It's a signal, okay? When a wolf's alone, it howls to signal its location to the rest of the pack. So if you heard a wolf howling, that means others could have been nearby. Maybe even a whole pack of them." He explained.
"A whole pack of wolves?" Scott asked as they looked at him, "No...werewolves." Stilies corrected.
"Are you seriously wasting my time with this?" Scott asked standing up. "You know I'm picking up Allison in an hour," He said as the two two stopped him. "I saw you on the field today, Scott. Okay, w-what you did wasn't just amazing, all right? It was impossible." He said as Scott rolled his eyes, "Yeah, so I made a good shot." He said as the two stopped him again. "No, you made an incredible shot, I mean...the way you moved, your speed, your reflexes. " He said as Melanie moved over towards him.
"People can't just suddenly do that overnight, and there's the vision and the senses, and don't even think I don't notice that you don't need your inhaler anymore." Melanie told him softly.
"Okay dude I can't talk about this right now, we'll talk tomorrow." He said making both their eyes widen. "Tomorrow?! What? No!" they both exclaimed. "The full moon's tonight. Don't you get it?" He asked.
"What are you trying to do? I just made first line. I got a date with a girl who I can't believe wants to go out with me, and everything in my life is somehow perfect. Why are you trying to ruin it?" He asked as Stiles sat on the desk chair as Mel crossed her arms. "We're just trying to help you Scott," She said.
"You're cursed, Scott." Stiles added as a bit of silence filled the room. "You know, and it's not just the moon will cause you to physically change. It also just so happens to be when your bloodlust will be at its peak." Stiles informed.
"Bloodlust?"
"Yes, your urge to kill."
"I'm already starting to feel an urge to kill, Stiles."
"Yeah well you gotta hear this." He said turning to the bed and grabbing a book from the pile. "The change can be caused by anger or anything that raises your pulse." He read a loud before closing the book. "I haven't seen anyone raise your pulse like Allison does. You gotta cancel this date." He explained before going through Scott's bag for his phone. "I'm gunna call her right now,"
"What are you doing?"
"I'm canceling the date." He said as Scott tried to get the phone back, "No, give it to me!" he yelled but he wouldn't budge but he suddenly pinned him against a the wall with his fist raised. He didn't break his stare from him. "AARGH!" He yelled throwing chair over as he let him go.
Melanie was silghtlt through the fight knowing if it went south she needed to steep in. But once he let Stiles' go she went up to him to make sure he was okay.
As Scott started panting trying to calm down. "I'm sorry," He said as he nodded lightly. "I-I gotta go get ready for that party. " He said getting his stuff as the two didn't move from the wall. He stopped at the door and saw the both had the same expression. "I'm sorry," He said before walking out and shutting the door again.
Stiles went and picked the chair up, as Mel leaned her head and side against the wall watching his moves. "Are you okay?" She asked softly not getting any responds. "Stiles?"
"Huh," He asked looking up at the Meri teen.
"I asked if you were okay?" She said as she nodded, "Yeah, I, uh I'm fine." He said quietly.
She nodded slowly, "Okay, well I know I can't make it to the party but if anything happens just call me, ya?" She asked as he nodded. She walked past the chair on her way out and saw the claw marks on it.
🧜♀️
"Alrighty," Melanie announced as she hopped down the last step of the stairs. "My phone is off and in my room, so I'll be back at like 2-3 ish." She said slowly walking backwards to the door so she could talk to her parents.
"You have everything right? Extra clothes? Food? Water?" Her mom asked setting her wine glass down.
"Yeah we wouldn't want another Friday the 13th incident." Her dad joked as she smiled nodding.
"That's why i have two changes of clothes, one in my car and one in my bag." She said motioning towards her backpack. "And Mamma I am good, two waters, like three bags of chips and if need be I have cash."
"Okay," Mia said walking up to her daughter and kissed her cheek. "Just be careful my little seashell. Oh! And your curfews 2:30."
"Really? I thought it was gunna be 1,"
"Well it is midnight," Eric said standing up and kissing his daughters forehead. "Now be careful cause the full moon bring out the crazys,"
She smiled while walking towards the front door, "Make sure Sebastian doesn't try to eat Flounder! I love you!" She yelled before going out the door and shutting it behind her.
Mia sighed heavily before wrapping her arm's around Eric. "She'll be fine," He said kissing the top of her head.
"I know, I just-" She said but stopped herself.
"Mia, she's young you know how the moon holds on us." He said hearing the car leave their drive way.
🧜♀️
"What?" Scott asked noticing Derek's expression.
"Someone else is here,"
"More hunter's?" He asked as Hale quickly shook his head, "No," He said before walking towards it. The sent. That was unfamiliar, yet familiar. Scott quickly followed as the small walk made it so they found themselves at the waterfall. The waterfall flood throughout the lake. And their she was Melanie Meri, standing their with her back against them, not knowing anyone was there.
"What's Melanie doing here?" Scott asked, "Isn't she the one that was with you and the annoying one?" Derek asked as neither one could take their eye's off of her, trying to figure out what she would do next.
The girl dropped her bag next to her, than pulled her hair out of her hair tie. She than reached down and un-zipped her bag. From there she pulled her red jacket off, followed with her white plain t-shirt, and lastly her black gym short's which were all stuffed into a bag. This left the girl in nothing but her bra and under ware. She looked up at the full moon smiling at it before taking a step closer to the edge of the rock she was on. She stearch her arms up and in a split second she had already dived off.
Scott quickly ran forward after her, knowing she doesn't know how to swim. Derek quickly yanked him back from the edge as the both watched waiting for her to re-surface.
They watched as she re-surfaced, slicking her hair back as she spit some water out. She smiled looking down at her arm's seeing the pink beautiful scales she loved appeared. Looking forward as she dove back underwater just as her pink tail brook surface acting as her feet would.
He just saw one of his best friends jump off a waterfall and into a lake when they said countless times they couldn't swim. And now she has a tail and scales.
