NINETEEN: Check Ups & Just Friends

CHAPTER NINETEEN: Check Ups & Just Friends

It had been weeks since Jolene's accident, and she couldn't have been more excited for today. The brunette had a check up at St. Thomas to see how her injuries were healing and if her cast could finally be removed today.

It had been a grueling few weeks for Jolene not being able to do much of anything for herself, and having to rely on Happy was not the doctors idea of a good time. Happy had stuck to his word and stayed with Jolene while she was recovering, and while Jolene was grateful for him helping she was more than ready for him to be back sleeping at the clubhouse. The only thing Happy would let Jolene do for herself was go to the bathroom and even then the tattooed biker would stand outside the door waiting for her to be done. Happy was exhausting and suffocating her.

"What times your appointment?" Happy rasped as he stood in the doorway of Jolene's room, a slight smirk on his face as he watched Jolene pull on one of his SAMCRO shirts.

"1:30." Jolene said while looking over herself in the mirror. A slight sigh left her lips as she took in the scars on her face. "Gemma's taking me." The brunette added while gathering her dark hair into a ponytail. Jolene could feel Happy's dark eyes burning a hole into the side of her head. She knew Happy wanted to take her to this appointment, but they needed some time apart even if it was only for an hour or so. Jolene felt like they had become that old married couple that always bickered, and the fucking hilarious part was they weren't even a couple.

The smirk left Happy's face and his dark eyes turned cold as he watched Jolene look into the mirror and gather her hair into a ponytail. "Thought I was takin' you." His voice low with a hint of anger in it.

Jolene shook her head, she really didn't feel like having an argument right now. "I never said you were." The brunette pointed out. "You just assumed you were." Of course her Jeep had been totaled in the accident, and not that she could drive yet because of her injures, but Jolene hated having to rely on Happy or anyone else to drive her around. Another reason she hoped her cast came off today.

"It's that fuckin' doctor." Happy growled while stepping into the room. "That's why you don't want me goin' with you." Liam fuckin' Boyd had become a thorn in his side. The doctor from Boston had made his presence known by coming to Jolene's house to check up on her, and Happy wanted nothing more than to punch the man in his face and make him bleed whenever he touched Jolene.

"Happy." Jolene said with a sigh. The brunette was growing tired of having this conversation repeatedly about Liam. Happy had begun to act like an overbearing boyfriend whenever Liam came around to check on her, and it was really growing old. "Stop acting like I'm your old lady. I'm not." She said a hint of sadness in her voice while she looked into Happy's dark eyes. Jolene could see the anger in them as she spoke those truthful words, but there was also a sadness in them which surprised the doctor.

A knock on the door stopped Happy from responding to Jolene's words. "That will be Gemma." Jolene said while pushing past Happy, and hobbling out of the bedroom with Happy following close behind.

"Hey, baby." Gemma said with a smile while pushing her sunglasses on top of her head. "You ready to go?" She asked, taking notice of Happy standing closely behind Jolene.

"Yeah." Jolene nodded. "Lyla should be dropping of Mateo in an hour or so." Jolene said while turning around to face Happy.

Happy let out a grunt and nodded. He watched as Jolene slowly made her way out of the house, he made himself comfortable on the couch as he waited for Mateo and Jolene to get back home. Home - that's exactly what Jolene's house had become to him in the weeks he had been there, and he wanted it to stay that way.

"How's the Delaney and Lowman family living situation going?" Gemma asked with a smirk as she and Jolene sat in the waiting room of St. Thomas.

Jolene rolled her eyes while she filled out the medical papers in front of her. "We're like an old married couple, you know minus the whole married or couple part. I'm going stir crazy being in the house all day, and Happy isn't helping it."

"He cares about you a lot, baby." Gemma said. The older woman was growing frustrated by how stubborn the two were. She had thought after Jolene's accident the two would finally admit they still loved each other, but so far the two were still as stubborn as ever. "Happy had to practically be dragged out of here just to leave your bedside for a few hours."

"I know, Gem." Jolene said with a sigh. The brunette still loved Happy, but every time she thought about letting those words slip from her mouth she couldn't help but think of him with a croweater on the night of her accident.

"Jolene Delaney." A blonde nurse called, a smile on her face.

Jolene stood up and walked slowly towards the nurse. "You're not coming?" She asked, turning around and raising an eyebrow at Gemma.

"No." Gemma shook her head. "I've got someone I've gotta talk to." The older brunette said causing Jolene to shake her head. Jolene knew exactly who Gemma was going to talk to - Tara Knowles.

"Behave." Jolene warned before following the nurse down the hallway.

Jolene sat in the room waiting for Liam. The nurse had left a few minutes ago with a smile on her face after checking her vitals with the promise that Dr. Boyd would be with her soon. The doctor was a bit nervous to see Liam, sure he had come around to check on her at her house but she had something on her mind she had been wanting to tell him, and Jolene knew she finally needed to let it all out.

"Hello, Jo." Liam said with a smile as he walked into the room. "How are you feeling?"

"Good." Jolene smiles. "Hoping I can get this cast off today and get cleared to go back to work." The brunette said with a hopefulness in her voice. She was sick of sitting in the house all day. Sure, she loved spending all the extra time with Mateo, but she was certain the toddler was growing sick of her as well. Mateo had grown attached to Happy's hip since he had been staying at their house, and Jolene was glad the two had gotten to bond and let their relationship grow.

Liam let out a laugh as he began to examine Jolene. "How's Mateo?" He asked with a fond smile. Liam had met the toddler on one of his many visits to Jolene. The little boy was hilarious and Liam instantly took a liking to him, but Happy was always close by whenever he visited giving him a menacing look with those cold dark eyes.

"He's good." Jolene said wincing a little as Liam felt her ribs.

"Ribs still hurt?" Liam asked.

"Just a little bit." The brunette said truthfully.

Liam nodded. "Well everything looks good. Your ribs will probably take another two weeks to heal fully, but the cast can come off today and I'll clear you for work in two weeks."

A smile took over Jolene's face. "Thank god." She threw her arms around Liam, excitement running throughout her body. The brunette quickly removed her arms from around Liam, she didn't want him to get the wrong idea.

"Liam." Jolene said slowly while looking into his blue eyes, a smile on his handsome face. She needed to tell him now. "This relationship can't go any farther than just friends and work colleagues." She said watching the smile on his face falter a little. "It's not fair to you. I'm still-"

"In love with Happy." Liam finished for her. "I think in the back of my mind I've known that for a while. I see the way he looks at you, and you look at him. He's completely in love with you. I'm not going to stand in the way of that, and I don't want to be your second choice. I hope he treats you and Mateo right." The blue eyed doctor said with a smile before walking out of the room.

Jolene let out a sigh of relief. She liked Liam, really she did but it wasn't fair to him or herself to try and pursue a relationship while her heart wasn't really in it. He was a good guy, and he deserved someone who could love him wholeheartedly and that couldn't be her. Jolene didn't know what the future held for her or Happy, but she owed it to herself to be completely honest about her feelings for Happy.
