EIGHTEEN: Four Days & Weeks Ahead
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: Four Days & Weeks Ahead
It was days later when Jolene finally woke up, and she hadn't expected to see a half asleep Happy sitting in one of those uncomfortable hospital chairs at her bedside. A small laugh left her dry throat as she took in Happy's sleeping form, sending a shooting pain immediately through her ribs. "Fuck." Jolene hissed, closing her dark eyes in pain.
Happy's eyes opened immediately at Jolene's pain filled voice. "You're awake." He rasped, a sigh of relief passing through his lips. It felt like a huge weight was lifted off of his shoulders now that Jolene had finally woken up. The last four days had been fucking hell, and there was nothing he could do to make them better. Happy had spent practically every second in that damn hospital room only leaving for a few hours to shower and grab some food other than the crap St. Thomas served. "You remember what happened?" He asked while sitting forward in the chair. Happy knew he shouldn't be bombarding Jolene with questions right away, but there was a chance she didn't remember the accident or anything that happened right before it.
Jolene nodded as the memories of the argument between her and Happy flashed through her mind. It was funny how that's what she thought of first, not the car accident. She quickly pushed the bitter words they said to each other out of her mind, those words hurt her more than the accident itself. Maybe it was because she was scared of dying, and those being her last words to him. "Can you get me some water?" The brunette asked.
Happy nodded and quickly walked over to the little bedside table, pouring a decent amount of the cold, clear liquid into a plastic cup. The tattooed biker looked around, his dark eyes searching for a straw. "There's no fuckin' straw." His raspy voice full of aggravation.
Jolene let out a laugh as she watched Happy search for a straw, his face growing furious by the second. "Happy, I don't need a fucking straw. My arms aren't broken I can hold a cup." She reassured him.ย
"Where's Mateo?" The brunette asked after taking a few sips of water. She hoped Happy didn't ignore him with all the chaos going on. Jolene knew the toddler would be scared and confused about her being in the hospital, but she hoped Happy explained it all to him.
"With your mom." Happy said. "Gemma and her have been taking turns watching him. He's been real strong through all of this." Happy said with pride in his voice, and a small smile on his face. "I-"
Happy's voice was cut off by a knock on the door, the biker and doctor turned their attention towards the door. "Ah, look who's awake." Liam walked into the room with a smile on his face. "I'm just going to make sure everything looks good, and then we can start the process of getting you out of here." He smiled.
Happy let out a low growl as Liam Boyd walked into the room with a fucking smile on his face. In the four days that Jolene had been asleep Happy had come to fucking despise the doctor from Boston. He fucking hated the way he looked at Jolene.
"How many days was I out for?" Jolene asked Liam as he started to check her vitals. The doctor knew it had to have been longer than a day or two judging by the way Happy had acted.
"Four days." Liam said as he looked over the stitches on her face. "How's your pain level?" He asked.
"A six. My ribs hurt like a bitch, but everything else feels more like a dull pain." Jolene said, a hiss leaving her mouth as Liam began to examine her ribs.
"What the fuck." Happy growled. "She just told you her ribs hurt and you fuckin' poke at them and shit." He didn't want to see Jolene in anymore pain than she already was in.
"Happy." Jolene warned, turning her dark eyes towards the clearly agitated biker.
Liam ignored Happy and continued with his examination. The blue eyed doctor knew hardly nothing at the man named Happy, expect he was the father of Jolene's son, and he refused to leave her hospital room. Whenever Liam came in to check on Jolene, the tattooed man was always there watching him with a stoic look on his face and cold eyes. Liam didn't know the status of Jolene's relationship with Happy, but he hoped the two were just coparenting because he still wanted to pursue something with the brunette. "Sorry." Liam said giving Jolene an apologetic smile.
"It's fine, Liam." Jolene said giving him a reassuring smile.
"Well everything looks good." Liam said while tossing his gloves into the garbage. "Is there somebody who can stay with you? You won't be able to do much, so it's best to have someone with you." The doctor explained while signing off on Jolene's chart.
"Me." Happy spoke before Jolene could answer.
Jolene turned her head towards Happy with shock written across her features. The brunette hadn't been expecting that out of his mouth. She had thought Half-Sack would be tasked with being her live in babysitter while she was recovering, or at least she figured her mom and Gemma would take it upon themselves to make her stay with one of them.
"Well everything look good." Liam nodded. "Just sit tight and you'll be out of here in a few hours." The doctor gave Jolene one last smile before making his way out of the room.
Jolene laid back on the bed, a silence taking over the room. The brunette doctor couldn't help but feel like this was just the beginning to a long few weeks ahead of her.
