ONE
01 | UNSHAKABLE ALLIANCE
_____
The young girl, about 16 years old, stood atop the undulating emerald cliffs of Auradon, just outside the palace. She was there to meet her best friend, Ben, the son of the king and queen of this land, but first, she had a rendezvous with her father, Tairn. As the majestic black dragon approached, his presence announced by the rhythmic beating of his powerful wings, she could sense him before she saw him.
"Father," she greeted warmly as he finally rounded the bend and landed gracefully at her feet. The great beast rumbled a gentle growl and nuzzled his nose against his daughter's head. "It is always a delight to see you, little one," he said, his voice resonating with a warmth that belied his fearsome exterior.
Together, they looked out over the sprawling kingdom, the setting sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was in these quiet moments that the girl felt the weight of her unique heritage, a bridge between the ancient world of dragons and the modern realm of humans.
As Tairn gazed upon his daughter, his eyes held a mixture of pride and concern. "Remember, my child," he began, his voice a low thrum that seemed to blend with the wind, "you carry the hopes of two worlds within you. Your journey is one of balance and understanding. Embrace your dragon lineage, but do not forget the humanity that courses through your veins."
The girl nodded, her heart swelling with the love she felt for her father and the responsibility she carried. She knew that her role in the future of Auradon was pivotal, and with Tairn's wisdom guiding her, she felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
With a final affectionate nudge, Tairn spread his wings and took to the skies, leaving his daughter to her meeting with Ben. As she watched her father disappear into the distance, she turned to face the path that led back to the palace, her resolve as steady as the cliffs beneath her feet.
Ben was waiting for her, his smile a beacon of friendship and camaraderie. Together, they would forge a new chapter in the history of Auradon, one where the daughter of a dragon and the heir to the human throne could stand side by side, united in their vision for a peaceful and prosperous future.
In the twilight's embrace, atop the undulating hills, Aeliana discovered her beloved with his hands clasped behind his back, gazing skyward in search of Tairn. "Your father is always so terrifying," he remarked as he sensed her presence behind him. Aeliana offered a soft chuckle. "He is indeed powerful, I'll grant you that, but rest assured, he's not terrifying at all."
Ben sighed, a hint of anxiety lacing his voice. "You're his daughter; of course, he won't frighten you. But the way he looks at me—it's as if he's contemplating devouring me alive." Aeliana's laughter rang out, light and melodic. "He knows it would break me if he did, so no, you're quite safe. Now, you wanted to speak with me. What is it?"
Ben's hands began to fidget, a habit Aeliana had observed him pick up over the years. "Ben, tell me," she urged gently. "You know you can tell me anything—and I mean anything." With a resigned sigh, Ben nodded before capturing her hands in his, gazing at her with such profound admiration that she found herself momentarily speechless. "You do know how much I care for you, Aeliana, don't you? Very much." She nodded, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "Yes, I know. You've been saying it for the past few months." She teased him with a playful tap on the arm. "One might think you're preparing to ask for my hand in marriage." Ben's smile wavered, uncertain. "Well, no, not yet at least," he said, and Aeliana felt a blush creep up her neck, though she managed to maintain her composure. "So, what is it?" Her gaze delved into Ben's eyes, which truly were beautiful.
"How would you feel if I've chosen my first official proclamation?" he asked nervously, and Aeliana looked at him and smiled. "Well, I'd be pleased, of course. What is it?"
"I've decided that the children of the Isle of the Lost shall have a chance... to live here in Auradon," Ben declared. Aeliana stiffened. "What?" she asked, her eyes narrowing as they searched his face. "Are you serious?" He nodded solemnly. "Every time I look out to the island," Ben continued, gesturing toward the island visible beyond the rolling hills, Aeliana felt her chest tighten. Did you know? she inquired of her father in her thoughts. I had my suspicions. The young prince has always been ambitious, but in a good way, her father replied. Aeliana sighed and worked her jaw. "It feels as though they've been abandoned."
Ben tried again, his eyes never leaving her face. "Please, I need you by my side when I tell my parents today." He brought her hands to his lips, kissing her knuckles tenderly. "Can I count on you to be there?"
Aeliana's hum of contemplation soon gave way to a warm smile. "I suppose I do," she said, and at her words, Ben's face lit up with an incandescent joy. "Really?" he asked, seeking confirmation in her eyes. She nodded, and he embraced her tightly, the relief in his voice palpable. "Oh, thank you, thank you so much! It means the world to me," he exclaimed before stepping back to gaze into her eyes with such fervent gratitude that it felt as though her heart might burst from the intensity of the moment.
She knew without a doubt that she would stand by him. He was her dearest friend, and her loyalty was unwavering—to the bone, always and forever. No matter what challenges lay ahead for them both, she would be there, a steadfast presence in his life's journey. Their bond was unbreakable; it transcended the trials of their world and anchored them amidst the tumultuous seas of uncertainty that surrounded them. Together, they would face whatever came their way with courage and an unyielding spirit of camaraderie that not even the shadows of doubt could diminish.
