THE SUN WAS shining right into his eyes, as he sat nervously on the grey couch in the middle of the living room. his gaze was wandering all around the room, observing the silhouettes of his friends. a strand of his brunette hair is falling into his face, but he couldn't care less. honestly, he didn't care about anything but the time. it's been how long? since he was waiting at his friend's place.

"when did she wanna come again, bro?" and although he was trying to sound as casual as he could, he failed miserably. "no need to be so desperate, dude", "shut the fuck up" another voice chimed in, giving their friend a smack on the head.

"I'm sure, she'll be here soon!" the girl tried to sound encouraging. the worst thing to do in this situation is to doubt whatsoever is gonna happen next. "c'mon" she said when she noticed his empty face staring at the floor. "I can't take you serious like this, chris" but her words couldn't reach his mind.

whatever was happening, it was so off. if he had one wish, he would have let this all unhappen. not only did he tell all his friends about, made them all meet up, planned the whole thing and then gets blown off. sure, she could've just been late. It wouldn't even be the first time, but this time it felt weird.

maybe because he dressed up like crazy, wearing his best jeans, a white shirt with a cute little tie, he stole from his dad's closet. chris couldn't continue sitting down, his legs were screaming to stand up. "god" his friend threw his head back in disbelief that this was actually happening.

"you have to get some fuckin' chills, bro" he sighed, making his impatience very obvious. "this is not gonna be your last homecoming!"

"don't listen to him, chris. he's just jealous 'cause he got no bitches to ask out" the girl said, making their friend stand up as well.

he threw his arm around chris' shoulders, "I'm just saying that if this will not go the way it was supposed to, there are still two homecoming's and prom left" he laughs. "right?" looking around, he was waiting for someone to agree with him. but neither did chris nor anyone of his friends.

"yeah no" the girl shakes her head in annoyance. "this is not how it works-" but as she continued to speak, chris' thoughts were shifting to another reality. in which it was all going to go just as planned. in which the lucky girl will ring the door bell and his friend was going to open it. in which they would tell her that something happened to chris and that they're all waiting for her in panic, not knowing what to do. in which they'd be leading her to the living room, finding chris with a bouquet of daisies, her favorite flowers, a huge banner above his head saying "you n me at homecoming?" and a bunch of heart-shaped balloons, which were not chris' idea.

though, as his gaze wandered through the room, he realized how corny this is. plus, it did not quite match his imagination of how it was supposed to look like. most of the balloons exploded when they tried to put them on the ceiling. the blue letters on the banner weren't even the same size, because in the middle of writing, chris realized that "-at homecoming?" would never fit on there.

"where's the bouquet?" he asked, panicky, turning around. "I put them in a vase, no worries" the girl said. she was laying on the couch and put her feet up on the backrest. her long brunette hair covered her face. he felt that she didn't want to be here any longer, although it was her place they were hanging out at.

"in case of a rejection-", "oh so now you're speaking" chris interrupted his brother, who has been watching the whole thing from the kitchen bar stool. "I'm just tryna making this less uncomfortable"

"woohoo! you succeeded" chris said ironically. this did not help. there was no space to sit on the couch, there was no empty bar stool, it was just him standing in the middle of the room, watching the daisies slowly facing the floor.

"i gotta go pee", "no, stay" matt sat back down at his brothers words, "she could be here any minute"

"i promise I'll hurry" he said, mockingly. "what are you guys even doing here, when the only thing you do is making fun of me, huh?" he was trying hard to keep his composure, though his voice sound raw, almost breaking.

his heart was racing in his chest, he didn't even want to take a look at the clock. it's been at least half an hour. there wasn't even a text message, not a single sign that she was even alive. but the worst part of all, she only lived a block away. the more he tried to find excuses, the more he realized how pathetic the whole thing was.

before the boy could even finish his thoughts, his legs were carrying him into the kitchen, grabbing the ladder that was leaning against the wall next to the huge window, from which you could face the street. no car, no girl walking on the sidewalk running, knowing she was late.

"bro?" matt tried to stop chris carrying the ladder back into the living room. he put his foot on the first step, trying to put the banner down. "this is so corny, I don't wanna do this anymore" he said without even looking down. "stay cool buddy, she's gonna be here any second"

it was when suddenly a sound of a door bell ringed through the house. the girl on the couch jumped up in excitement. "put the ladder away" she whispered with a wide smile written on her lips. she disappeared behind the next corner to open the front door at the end of the hallway. everyone could hear the door opening and then... nothing?

no one was breathing, they just looked each other in curiosity whilst chris was about to poop his pants. the silence only remained for the quarter of a second until a little girl runs around the corner, throwing her jacket on the couch and taking off her shoes. "what the fuck?" matt said with the ladder in his hand. there was no time to bring it back to the kitchen.

the brunette girl was right behind her. the smirk on her lips was gone, just like the excitement in her eyes. only a second later, a grown up woman entered the room. "oh hey everyone! nice to see you" she cheered, absorbing her living room. "it was just my mum"

"just your mum?" she laughed, "please, what kind of greeting is that?"

"sorry miss, but, uh, we were actually waiting for someone else" nick explained. "oh!" she said and put her coat up in the garderobe. "pretend I was never here then" she said with a polite smile on her lips, walking upstairs.

"okay. this is it." chris said quietly, taking the ladder out of matt's hand, placing it under the banner.  his friends were just watching him. no one really wanted to be the first one to say something. it was crystal clear, she wouldn't come.

"maybe you should think about my advice, you know. it's only sophomore year" the boy said, whereupon he gets smacked again. "wrong timing" the girl's voice whispered. before chris could walk off, nick jumped off the bar stool and gave his little brother a hug.

chris never felt more embarrassed than he did in that moment. he's never gonna do something like this ever again. although his brother's hug felt like comfort, it was not enough to get him into a greater mood. there was probably nothing that could've cheered him up even in the slightest.

yet, he knew that he had the greatest friends of all time, with the greatest mum, who would let them stay all night to watch a movie and order from in-n-out burgers. sadness is easier to deal with on a full stomach. well, close, the daisies on the kitchen table caught his eyes each time he was trying to ignore them.

it wasn't until the middle of the night, when everyone already fell asleep on the couch, when he got up from the black leather armchair, walking right into another, empty, quiet room. it was impossible to fall asleep, his thoughts were filled with those stupid "what if-" thoughts, which got on his last nerve.

chris usually wasn't the type to overthink what anything could've been like if it had gone as planned. he used to call that behavior childish and unnecessary. until that day though, that view of his changed. as he looked around, he saw the kitchen counters silhouettes in the dark. he didn't dare to pull the light switch.

he spotted the daisies still standing where he put them, away from his sight. he let out a sigh, not even hiding the daisies succeeded. the silence all around the house made him feel safe somehow. if chris had had to be alone that night he would've lost his mind probably. he promised to himself, to never ever make him seem that vulnerable.

stupid feeling. weird feeling. he couldn't wait for it to fade away.

suddenly the calm silence was interrupted by a phone vibrating. the boy was noticing a phone light up in the corner. he could tell that it was the girl's phone by her hello kitty wallpaper. he never understood the hype about hello kitty anyway. little did he know, that his eyes were gonna skim the text in less than a second.

confused of what he just read, he was so tempted to click on the screen one more time. don't do it, his mind was shouting, that's not even your phone. but it's not that big of a deal in the end, is it? it's not like he picked up a bunch of calls for his friends whenever they weren't there.

chris' hand found its way through the darkness, tapping on the screen, making it light up once more. it was a notification from imessage. he tilted his head, squinting his eyes because of the bright screen.

his gaze shifted to the contact name, leaving him stunned as he read her name. why was she still awake? how could she even be alive after what happened earlier the day. his mind continued to deny that this was actually happening. she did not sleep the whole time, like he fantasized, forgetting about her meeting, she wasn't out of town with her family, perhaps so busy that she couldn't give him a call.

the screen went dark again. his hands were shakier than ever. did chris even want to read whatever she texted his friend? no he did not. yes he did. without realizing what he was doing, he read through the text, scanning every word.

'you WON'T believe who just asked me out for h.o.m.e.c.o.m.i.n.g.

there was a deep voice in the back of his head, reading it over and over and over again. did she have to twist the knife? it was the anger crawling up to his neck, tensed his muscles, drying out the tears in his eyes. he felt so humiliated by so simple words.

with his left hand he opened the kitchen window, with the other one he took the vase with the daisies and threw them out of the window, right onto the front yard. leaving the empty vase on the counter, he looked at the phone light up once more.

'he took me to that damn fancy restaurant LIKEEE im so sorry I didn't show up at your place... hope I didn't miss anything xx'
