Chapter 7 - Regret
Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Sunset waited out the morning until it was time to go into school. They met up with the other four girls from their friendship group not long afterwards.
"How on earth is Rainbow Dash actually early for school?!" Twilight laughed, along with everyone else.
"Long story really..." Dash yawned.
Applejack walked towards Rainbow and placed a hand on her shoulder, catching her by surprise.
"Ah'm worried about ya sugarcube. You sure ya gonna make it through the day?"
"I'll be fine..." Rainbow smiled. She was glad AJ cared about her— well, of course she cared about her— but, she couldn't help but wish it was more than that.
Today, her and Applejack had a lot of classes together, so of course she'd be able to make it through the day. Dash looked at her friend, at how perfect she was— and then she realised she was staring and stopped. Sunset saw her. She smirked. Without thinking, Dash shoved Sunset Shimmer. She didn't mean to do it so violently but the girl toppled over, bumping Rarity down too.
"Woah, Dash! That was extreme!" Pinkie exclaimed, helping Sunset up off the floor.
But Sunset was just laughing... "Yeah Dash, why did you do that?!"
"She's been hanging out with me for too long, getting ma super strength," Applejack chuckled, effortlessly pulling Rarity up off the ground, just to prove her point. Rainbow shook her head, scowling at AJ, as a joke - of course.
The bell rang to signify the beginning of class, and, as they all had literature class, AJ and Dash and Fluttershy walked together.
Rainbow was visibly tired - rubbing her eyes and yawning every few steps she took.
"Dash, why didn't ya sleep?!" Applejack shook her head, worried for her friend.
"I did! Just... not very well..." Rainbow yawned, again.
"Well, why not? You got somethin' on your mind?"
Silence. AJ stopped in her tracks.
"You can tell me anythin' sugarcube, I'm here for you."
"Yeah Dashie, you can tell us," Fluttershy smiled. If they were being completely honest, AJ and Dash had kinda forgotten she was still there.
Rainbow Dash knew far too well how stubborn Applejack was, and that she wouldn't let it go without Rainbow saying something. But she couldn't tell her. Not yet. Not in school while walking to English lit class, and with Fluttershy being right there as well. That's stupid.
"It's literally nothing! Sunset was up too, I don't understand why she's not as tired as me..." Rainbow groaned.
"Cause you're not used to it. I want ya to get some sleep tonight ok? And if you wake up tired, go back to sleep. School ain't that important in this last week anyway, you'll be fine," AJ smiled. And the trio walked into class.
Rainbow thought about it. She took her seat next to Fluttershy in class, and put her head on the desk. There was a heater right above her as well, so it was perfect sleeping conditions.
"Fluttershy, wake me up when I'm getting picked on..."
Fluttershy tapped Dash on the shoulder, "Rainbow... you can't sleep in class."
"Yes I can. You're not the one who didn't sleep, you don't know how I feel..." Dash sighed, turning her head to other side, so she wasn't facing Fluttershy anymore.
Fluttershy was kinda taken by surprise there, "Oh.. ok. Sorry..." she said meekly.
The thing is, Dash was too tired to even comprehend that she was being rude to Fluttershy. So she didn't apologise. She glanced at Applejack, who was seemingly concentrating on the lesson. That girl puts in too much effort. She admired that.
However, Applejack wasn't concentrating. In fact, she was thinking about her party. She really didn't want Sunset Shimmer to come. It was supposed to just be her and Rainbow... and maybe... just maybe... something could happen, right? But now Sunset would be there and it just wouldn't be the same. Perhaps they could ovoid her, but that would be rude, and the whole point of the party was to bring everyone together. The thing is, even if AJ asked Granny if it was ok for Sunset to come, she would say yes, so she couldn't even use that as an excuse. And Applejack wouldn't be caught lying, especially in such a selfish situation—
The point was, she had a lot on her mind, and it was gonna help her if she kept thinking about it, so she left her future self to take care of that one.
