Chapter 5 - Early morning stroll
That night, Rainbow Dash struggled to get any sleep at all. She needed to talk this through with someone — someone who wasn't her mom. Her phone beside her buzzed, and the light from the screen made the dark room glow. The girl glanced to the time that flashed on the screen:
04:37am
Already hours past midnight and she still hadn't got any sleep.
Hesitantly, Dash flicked her covers away and got up to walk around her room. She knew was gonna regret going a Tuesday with no sleep, but hardly seemed to care as she rummaged through her closet to search for a decent outfit for school. She threw on some black jeans and a pale blue shirt, under a large white hoodie. She then took the house keys, her phone, and schoolbag, and quietly shut the front door behind her.
The thought of late night walks — or in this case, early morning — seemed to amuse Rainbow Dash. Plus, she had nothing better to do. Her parents weren't very deep sleepers, and if they heard Dash turn on the TV that early in the morning, she would be in a little trouble.
Soon enough, she found herself walking towards the town. The shops were, of course, all shut, and only the lamplights lit the streets. The morning was very cold. She took her phone out of her pocket. The message that she hadn't opened yet remained on the screen. It was from Sunset, from yesterday afternoon:
'Wha- That was so pointless!'
Rainbow thought about it. It was pointless, wasn't it....
Her obsession for her cowgirl friend... it was so damn bad.
It was embarrassing more than anything. At school, people were used to seeing the tough, loud, confident side of Dash. However, when she's with AJ, she lets down her guard, and it's humiliating.
5:02am
Three more hours until the school bell rings. She kicked a stone along the icy path, trying to occupy her mind with thoughts. In the midst of her daydreaming, her phone rang. Who could possibly be ringing her this early?!
"Hello?" The girl answered, with curiosity.
"Rainbow.. what the hell are you doing outside of my house at five AM?!" no other than the one and only Sunset Shimmer asked, but rather than talking through the phone, she had opened her bedroom window and yelled at Dash from there.
Rainbow laughed, "Oh.... uh- I don't really know to be honest..."
"Is this to do with the text from last night?"
Dash smiled to herself, and sighed, but as she opened her mouth-
"Actually hold on a sec, I'm coming down," Sunset shut the window and scurried about in her room. Moments later the front door opened and there Sunset stood, her hair messy - like Rainbow Dash's - from her almost sleepless night from before.
"What you doing up so early then Dash?" Sunset asked, zipping up her coat and scraping her hair into a loose pony-tail.
"I could ask you the same thing..."
"Just answer me."
They began walking along the streets, slowly in the direction of the school.
Dash grinned, thought about what she was gonna say, and didn't actually end up saying it...
"Uh, I just... couldn't sleep I guess."
But Sunset could read right through her. "I know there's something else. You can literally vent to me all you want, I won't mind." Sunset saw Dash's face, clearly filled with thoughts, "It'll clear your mind!"
Rainbow hesitated, "Well, y'know when we were at your house.. and I was finding you a 'Christmas date'..."
"Oh god not this again...." Sunset chuckled, "Have you found someone?"
"No, no I haven't found anyone for you yet, which is kind of a bummer, I need to work on that..." Dash said, getting sidetracked on purpose.
"No, you don't..." she laughed, "But yeah anyway, I remember at my house....? It's only Tuesday, it wasn't that long ago," Sunset rolled her eyes playfully.
Rainbow pulled her hood over her head, "Actually just- forget it, don't worry."
"Rainbow stop doing this!! Tell me what's wrong! I'm not gonna freak out or anything, I know you!"
Rainbow Dash chuckled, "God, fine! I like Applejack..."
Sunset briefly frowned in confusion.
Rainbow went noticeably red, not prepared to explain herself, "Like... y'know... that kind of like. I dunno where it came from, don't judge me...." She pulled the strings of her hoodie so the hood actually enveloped her burning face.
Sunset just laughed, "Dash... I know!"
