The next two days went by pretty fast. Some of your relatives came into town and you had just spent the whole day, prepping some of the food for the cookout. However, it was all worth it since today was finally the day.

"(y/n) hurry up !" Nicki calls you from downstairs. Everybody was dressed and ready to go to where the cookout would be held. Since your front yard was nowhere near big enough to fit all of your family coming, your dad also did not want to run the risk of his garden getting messed up by someone's bad ass kids. So this year, they decided to have it at a community park. Enough space for everyone to run around.

You suck your teeth before coming down the stairs, adjusting your skirt as you walked. The cookout had already started but you, your friends, siblings, and cousins wanted to take your time and get ready. Mostly so that everyone could have their little dramatic entrance. "I'm ready damn."

You all walked out of the house and since the park wasn't that far, you guys decided to walk. And by walk I mean, Isaac carrying you on his back before making Isaiah carry you on his. Your sandals weren't built for walking at the moment.

Once you got there, all of the favorites were blaring, instantly making you feel at home. Kids ran around in the vacant field, waiting for the more "official" games, like the potato sack race and three legged race, to begin.

The uncles, your dad, and some of the other men at the function were congregated near the grill, your grandpop insisted on being in charge of. They were doing the usual shit talking while getting ready to set up a game of spades. Different curses could be heard from that area but they were always silenced by annoyed girlfriends and wives.

The OGs (aka the aunties, your grandmother and your momma) were all sitting at one of the tables they had set up under the trees. Their job was going to be setting up when the food was fully ready but for now they were gossiping, your mom even braiding your grandmother's very long hair.

You all walked in and made your rounds, making sure to greet every adult present. Because if you didn't you would definitely never ever hear the end of it. First stop was the OGs. Your siblings and cousins were the first to walk up to them before you did. You gave each and every single one of them a hug. "(y/n) I've seen you on that Instachat and whatnot. You lookin' good girl," your aunt Tonya, smiled at you, flashing her gold tooth.

"Thank you auntie," you laugh leaning in to give her a hug.

"And Erykah girllll look atchu'. You look more like your daddy everyday," your grandmother greeted her.

Erykah sucked her teeth. "Mmcht don't remind me." Nicki and Isaac nudge her. "Ow !"

"Oh twins, Nasir, Zy, Connie, and Jean. The men over there are waiting for ya'll to play spades with them." Your mom points to the men. "And girls go say hi to ya grandad."

You, Nicki, Erykah, Asia, and Diamond nod and you tell the rest of your friends you'd be right back. This wasn't a problem for them because they felt perfectly comfortable being around your family. You walked over with the other six boys.

"Ain't no way those are Darnell's kids," your uncle Leroy says nudging your father.

"Mhm my movie star, my journalist, my basketball players, and my business owner." Your dad gets up to hug you three even though he just seen ya'll.

"All that money coming in. Ya'll need to donate," your uncle laughed a husky laugh as he started to deal out cards.

"And is that little Diamond and Asia," you grandpop called from the grill. "All you girls growin' up so fast."

"What's up, youngins ? Ya'll ready to get ya'll ass beat in spades ?" Your other cousin, who was way older than all of you called to the six boys.

"Don't say that before I have to really show ya'll what's up," Nasir pulled up a chair for him and Zy.

"And what about the white boys ? Ya'll ready to settle last year ?"

"We been ready. Ain't that right, Jean ?" Connie looked at Jean who was already looking through the cards he got.

"Yup. Watch out this year." You found it funny how focused all of the boys became as soon as they got over.

"Unt un. Let's go before it get ugly." Asia calls, causing for your sisters and Diamond to walk back to where the OGs were.

When you got back, Sasha already got herself something to eat, Mikasa was talking with your grandmother, and Armin was already being caught up on all the tea he missed. "Wait so you're not married anymore, Miss Sherly ?" he asked, fully invested in the conversation.

"Tuh. Hell no, he couldn't keep up with me," your aunt says in her country accent, laughing in her seat.

"Aunt Sherly, I'm tryna get like you," Nicki says, pulling up a seat so that she could get into the gossip.

As the rest of the girls go to sit down, you scan the field to see where Papi and Eren must've wandered off to. They were playing flag football with some of your younger cousins. You continued to look around the function at the rest of your relatives congregating and laughing with each other. Some were even line dancing. You never realized how much you missed being back at home.

You decided, that you'd walk around and see who you could see. As you did, you ran into a group of your younger cousins and family friends, who were in their teen years. One of them with a camera, you recognized to be Derrick.

"Hey little one. They put you on scrapbook duty again this year ?" you asked, playing around with his purple dreadlocks.

"First of all, I'm taller than you now and second of all yes. Matter fact, pose real quick."

You did something basic, just smiling and throwing up a peace sign before he showed you how you looked. You liked it and greeted the other kids around him before walking away.

You said hi to a few more of your relatives until one of your mom's close friends pulled you in to dance with her and catch up. "Tink, girl. I didn't even recognize it was you. How you been ?"

"I've been great miss T. How bout' you ?" you ask as she twirls you around, causing for you to laugh a little.

"God's been waking me up every morning so I can't complain."

"I'm happy to hear."

The both of you finish your small talk, so you decided to rest your feet a little and go sit back down with the OGs.

(PAUSE THE PLAYLIST AND PLAY THE SONG UP TOP PLEASEE)

And for some odd reason, they were all waiting for you. "Tink baby have a seat. We need to talk," your mom said, finishing up the last braid in your grandmother's hair.

"About ?" you say slowly, as you sit down next to Mikasa.

"You and Connie. Now I know-"

"Mommy. What me and him had probably isn't what's best. I'm too busy with work right now anyways," you say looking down at your feet.

"Now (y/n) Etta (l/n). I'm your mother so you can't fool me even if you tried. It's not because you're busy, baby. You're just getting in your own head." Your mother put her hand on her hip.

You bit your lip and didn't even say anything back because she was right. "Yeah Tink I ain't wanna say anything without mommy but ever since.. you know who.. you've always stopped yourself from being happy," Erykah came and rested her head in the crook of your neck.

"And from what I've seen you're happiest with Connie," Sasha added, finally putting down the rib she had so that she could actually contribute to the conversation.

"Okay so maybe. You guys are right but don't ya'll think it's kinda too late for that ?" you say looking around at them.

"Chile not at all. I got married at thirty-five," your aunt Tonya laughed as she went to dap up Armin who laughed with her.

"Now Tonya hush. Listen (y/n)." Everyone went quiet for your grandmother to speak since she was seen as the one with the most wisdom. "When me and your pop pop were dating, I ain't want to let that man in. It wasn't until I almost lost him, til I realized I didn't want to be without him."

"And a love like what we see you and Connie have.. they only come once in a lifetime, baby," your mother chimed in.

"And we don't want him to be the one who got away," Mikasa added putting her hand on top of yours.

You smile at their advice, finally being able to come to your decision and end the confusion that was brewing in your head.

meanwhile with the men's table

"So Connie. I hear through the grapevine you and my daughter going through a little blip," your father looks up from his cards to look at Connie, who was coincidentally looking at you talk and smile with the ladies.

"Tuh way more than a blip," Zy comments while laying his card down.

Nasir quickly pops him against the back of his head. "Shut up fool."

"Well what happened there ?" your grandfather, asked as he finally was able to take a break from the grill.

"We just aren't the best for each other right now. I think," Connie answers with a small smile on his face.

"Bullshit," your uncle replies.

"I hate to side with my enemy but he's right. Do you think you guys aren't best for each other or is that what you think she thinks ?" Jean asked, laying a card down.

"I don't know man. Everything's just a confusing mess right now," he replies nonchalantly.

"That girl has always been a stubborn one. Like you remember that one time she ain't stop buggin you about making sure her food didn't touch on the plate so she made you make her a new one, Leroy ?" The two men begin to laugh before your father continues talking."But one thing I know is that you are the best man for her, Connie. And I'm sure she knows that too." Your dad looks up to fully look at Connie in the eye, so that he knew just how serious he was.

He gulped. "And as her brothers we agree. I remember when she first went off to college and met you. Whenever she called us, she would not shut the hell up about you," Isaiah started.

"And ain't no way years of feelings could disappear like that. She'll come around I know it," Isaac added, giving Connie two firm pats on the back.

"Speaking of the devil," your grandfather nods his head in a direction. All of the men look where he was motioning to.

You were there, hands behind your back, shyly walking up to the table. "Hey, Connie. Can I talk to you real quick ?"

He stammered for an answer before your cousin butted in. "No you may not. We in the middle of spades, miss thang," Zy says rolling his eyes.

Once again, Nasir popped him in the back of his head. "Shut up fool."

"Ow ! You gon' stop hitting me or Imma tell your mom."

"What are you five, nigga ? Shut up."

Connie looked at the two and laughed before getting up. "Yeah sure."

The two of you walked to the part of the function where not many people were to talk. You looked at your feet thinking about what to say. "Okay so."

"So.."

"I've been really confused about.. us, recently. And now I know what I want," you looked up at him.

"Listen (y/n). I'm fine with being friends if you are-"

"Hush for one second. You don't have to lie, Connie." You pause. "It took a bit for me to figure it out but I realized I want you ."

"Really ?" You nodded. "What caused you to think this ?"

"Um.." you looked up to the sky. "A wise woman told me that something like this only happens once in a lifetime.. So whatcha think ?"

You looked back at him only for him to already be staring at you. He pulled you closer by the waist. "I think that you're everything I want and I wasn't about to let you go, regardless."

You smile and put each of your hands on his freckled kissed cheeks, and placed a soft kiss onto his lips. During the kiss, he ended up leaning you back, kinda in a dip formation you would see salsa dancers use, except both of your feet stayed on the ground. You guys finally pulled away from the kiss, when you heard a bunch of whooping and hollering coming from the function.

"That's what I'm talking about !"

"Yeah C-Dog !"

"OH MY GOD FINALLY."

The both of you, still in that position, look to see your family cheering you guys on and Derrick holding his camera in the air, screaming. "THAT'S GOING ON THE FRONT OF THE SCRAPBOOK."

The two of you laugh as he sits you right back up. "Oh and Connie."

"Hm ?"

"You're my amethyst, too."

Connie smiles at you, before wrapping his arm around your neck and plants a kiss on your cheek.

God, how you missed him.
