โหแฐ.แ Flickering flames of fire, burning marshmallows, a cup of hot chocolate and overwhelming amount of feelings; that's what Beomgyu is having in a the crisp cold night of December as he celebrates Soobin's birthday for him before they part ways forever, or...do they?
โหแฐ.แ Again a oneshot for my lovely Girlfriend RirisGarden because it's six months of us being together and because she wanted me to use XH's song "Good Enough" !!
๏น๏น๏น๏น๏น
It was crisp December night, 5th of December; the quiet of the occasion only heightened by the overwhelming emotions that hang heavy in the air, as Beomgyu pulls Soobin to show him the surprise he prepared, his hands slightly shaky and reluctant to let go of the warmth which Soobin's bigger, more softer palms provided.
Tomorrow, he and Soobin would part ways, ending their journey together.
Tonight, however, was for Soobin's birthday, a final night of celebration before saying goodbyes forever.
"Happy Birthday Soobinie hyung..." Beomgyu whispered, a hint of longing present in his voice, but he quickly masks it with faux enthusiasm, wishing his bestfriend happy Birthday, as he presents him the place he set up for him.
A camp-fire behind Beomgyu's house, in the garden. There was a log-fire in the middle, the flickering and glowing flames of red and orange blanketinh the small area with warmth, despite the chilly cold breeze of the evening.
Beside the log-fire was set a small tent fixed to the grassy earth, fairlights dangling from it and making the night-ish atmosphere appear more cozy; with the matching puppy coffee-mugs Beomgyu had kept near the neatly placed fluffy blanket, filled to the brim with hot chocolate, the aroma of the earthy and sweet liquid wafting through the night-air.
Beomgyu watched Soobin's eyes light up with surprise and delight as he took in the cozy camp-fire arranged by Beomgyu for his birthday celebration. The sight of Soobin's twinkling eyes crinkled like crescent moons with happiness made his heart soar with affection. He had always loved the way Soobin's eyes disappeared and his dimples flashed whenever he smiled his hearty smile. The smile Beomgyu always wished would be the result of his actions.
Beomgyu found Soobin looking around, noticing the marshmallows and hot coffee.
"Thank you, Beomgyu-ah, this is amazing! Only you would think of such an awesome way to celebrate my birthday." Soobin replied with the warmest and happiest smile Beomgyu had seen from his bestfriend in a while, his heart aching a little at the thought that this might be their last celebration together, but he pushes those feelings aside, determined to make this night memorable.
"Ayy it's nothing much, it's your 18th Birthday afterall...look who's getting old." Beomgyu joked, trying to bring back the lively persona he was famous for, nudging Soobin's arm teasingly, to which he was rewarded with a chuckle and eye-roll.
"Says who? You'll be just as old as me in a few months. I thought the old jokes were limited to Yeonjun-hyung." Soobin snorted, making Beomgyu laugh his pretty pearly smile, just like always.
Soobin never failed to make him smile, whether it be stupid arguments, sweet words or nasty jokes; and that's why the thought of never having the older to make him laugh like this again made his heart strings twist so much. Why was growing up a part of human life? Couldn't they be silly little boys playing in the dirt forever?
But again, that's just wistful thinking. The wish to stay in the perfect Neverland, away from the harsh reality which awaits every individual. Beomgyu and Soobin were no different.
Sighing, Beomgyu shook his head from such straying thoughts and they proceeded to sit by the crackling fire, the flames casting flickering shadows on their faces. The night air was cold, but the warmth of their friendship kept them cozy.
Soobin opened his arms, gesturing for Beomgyu to join him on the blanket not forgetting to add a teasing sentence of, "Come on, let's cuddle and talk until we freeze our asses!" He said with a cheeky grin.
Soobin's teasing words made Beomgyu snort and shake his head, but he settled beside Soobin eitherways, letting their shoulders touch.
Soobin put an arm around Beomgyu, pulling him into a comfortable embrace.
"Just like the old times, eh?" Beomgyu heard Soobin whisper with nostalgia in his voice, his chin resting on Beomgyu's head.
Beomgyu hummed, leaned into Soobin's warmth, trying to memorize the comfort that's soon to be a distant memory.
"Yeah, been a while since we did this, didn't we?" He smiled softly, letting the warmth from Soobin's arm seep into his bones, wanting to envelope himself into the feeling, hoping they get locked along with his overflowing affection for the older.
But oh...his love was like flowing water, unstoppable and pure.
Soobin nodded, the crackle of the fire the only sound between them.
They're so close, that Beomgyu could feel Soobin's steady heartbeat, the soft breaths they shared, and the slight rise and fall of his chest with each inhale. He fought the urge to hold him tighter, to capture the moment and the feelings in a vial, knowing that in a few hours, they'll be miles apart.
Soobin's voice was barely audible, a gentle whisper that was just for Beomgyu as he mumbled ever so softly..
"I wish we could stay like this forever."
Beomgyu's heart jumped at Soobin's words, the words that mirror his own desires. He turned his head slightly, not wanting Soobin to see just how affected he is by those simple words.
"Me too..." he murmured quietly, his voice a hushed admission of love and longing. He rested his head, so his ear was over Soobin's heartbeat, the sound grounding and comforting, a melody he wished he could remember forever.
They sit in silence for a while, each lost in their thoughts. Soobin's fingers absentmindedly tracing patterns on Beomgyu's arm, a gentle touch that sends shivers down Beomgyu's spine, a touch he'll miss once they're apart. The fire pops, casting dancing shadows on their faces, but neither of the two pull away.
They revel in the warmth and the intimacy, unspoken feelings filling the space between them like smoke.
As the fire crackled and the night deepened, Soobin looked at Beomgyu and asked, "Play something? For me?" a soft plea in his voice, an attempt to make the night last as long as possible.
It was a tradition between them, to play instruments together and sing. Soobin loved hearing Beomgyu play, his music filled with emotions he couldn't express in words, which is exactly how Soobin felt at this moment.
"Sure. Anything for the birthday boy."
Beomgyu smiled, reaching for his guitar, the familiarity of the instrument comforting. He settled the guitar into his lap, fingers hovering over the strings, and begins to play the melodies of "Good Enough" by Xindary Heroes, the mellow tones of the intro echoing softly.
Soobin looked at him with admiration, the firelight enhancing the soft features of Beomgyu's face. The song's melody filled the air, bringing back memories and stirring up emotions both have held but never had the courage to voice out.
The tenderness of the song hung in the air, a perfect representation of unspoken feelings lingering between them.
Beomgyu's heart ached, as he conveyed the feelings he couldn't voice out through music, hoping Soobin would get a hint, hoping Soobin would understand his unspoken request and plea.
He drowned in the feeling music provided him, the notes dancing through his fingertips and wafting into the air, begging to be felt and recognised, to touch the soft corners his voice could never reach, to make a home in a place he could just wish to forever recide in.
He didn't realise he had been shedding tears, until he felt a sweet melodious voice he could recognise anywhere, adding it's magic to his melody.
Just let me wave to you, not wave goodbye
Let me stay by your side
'Cause it's good enough
Yeah, it's good enough for me, whoa-ooh
"Soobin...?" Beomgyu's teary eyes peered into Soobin's twinkling ones, as Soobin smiled bitterly, and continued to give life to the soft melody through his vocals, adding even more knots into Beomgyu's already aching heart, but that didn't stop his fingers from playing the melancholic notes, gliding over the strings with purpose, as Soobin continue to sing what Beomgyu exactly felt at the moment.
Don't let me go back to darkness of blue
As long as I'm with you
I want nothing more, nothing more, nothing more
'Cause it's good enough, good enough, good enough
Hearing Soobin's longing-filled voice, watching his carefully guarded eyes staring right into his own, Beomgyu couldn't help but let his lips wobble, as more tears left home from his eyes to his cheeks, rolling down like drops of water, wetting the blanket under him, as the song neared it's end.
Soobin's gaze, his voice, the shake in his hands and the rasp in his throat made Beomgyu's want wander dangerous territories. Did Soobin felt the same longing he did, the same heart-burn he had been feeling since past week, the same tug in his heart whenever he saw the older?
Did his music touch the places he so desperately wished to reach?
You'll never find this story of mine
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah-ah
"Soobin-"
"Beomgyu..."
"Please...don't change... don't leave."
"Beomgyu-yah.."
"I love you."
Beomgyu's voice was a tender whisper, as he confessed his feelings, his heart pulsing in his chest, hammering against his ribs like a bird desperately trying to fly.
He continued, the words spilling from him in a quiet plea. "Please don't let this be an end Hyung..." His voice wavered, the words filled with vulnerability and a fear of losing what they had. The guitar notes fade, replaced by the rapid thumps in his chest, his heart open and exposed, aching for Soobin to understand.
He watched Soobin, awaiting his response, afraid of what he might say, afraid of what he might hear. He'd wanted to confess before, but always talked himself out of it, now he couldn't stop the feelings overflowing. Beomgyu loved Soobin, unconditionally, entirely, utterly. And he needed Soobin to know. If not now, then when?
Soobin blinked, his expression unreadable. The words Beomgyu uttered having thrown him into a chaotic whirl of emotions.
He always knew Beomgyu's love was deep, but he never expected this...never knew Beomgyu felt the same. He always assumed Beomgyu deserved better, he always felt unworthy. Now, as he looked at Beomgyu, tears in his eyes, hands gripping the guitar tight, he felt his own emotions clawing their way out, words he'd wanted to say for years, now on the tip of his tongue.
His voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper, as he managed to ask a small, "You love me?"
The vulnerability in his tone echoed his own emotions, his eyes never leaving Beomgyu's. He wanted to be sure he heard right, needed to believe that Beomgyu felt the same. He'd feared this for too long, too afraid to hope.
"No bitchass I love your damn Dog"
Beomgyu sniffled, his voice coming out more rough and filled with frustration than expected.
"Who do you think I'm saying all this to?"
H
e added with a scoff, wiping his tears with his sweater sleeves, making Soobin's heart melt from how adorable the younger was. He couldn't help but laugh softly at Beomgyu's response, a mix of amusement and relief.
There it was, the sassy Beomgyu he always knew, even in a moment like this. It was a familiar cover-up for emotions, and Soobin had always known. He shifted closer, reaching out to gently wipe away a stray tear from Beomgyu's cheek.
"Hey, look at me," he demands softly.
Beomgyu looked up, his tear-filled eyes meeting Soobin's. There was pain, fear, and hope swimming in those eyes, emotions laid bare, and it made Soobin's chest tighten. He continued softly, taking one of Beomgyu's trembling hands in his own, "I'm not leaving, and I'm not going to change. I promise. And as for...what you said-" Soobin pauses, his voice growing husky, "I love you too."
Those words, those three words Beomgyu had waited for for years, felt like a warm blanket wrapping around his fragile heart. He squeezed Soobin's hand, a silent plea to not let go, afraid that this is all a dream, some hallucination caused by his longing. Soobin loves him too, all those late-night longing, all those hidden glances, the unspoken love that felt like they both were sharing, wasn't just him? It was real?
With his voice barely a small whisper, he found courage to ask, "But what about you leaving with your Mom...?" He asked, the biggest fear crashing over him again.
Losing Soobin, even after having him so close.
Soobin just smiled, his heart overflowing. He reached out to cup Beomgyu's cheek, wiping another stray tear, feeling the warmth of his skin against his palm. "I'm not leaving Beomgyu-yah, not now." he mumbled, his voice gentle yet full of conviction.
His fingers trailed down to the curve of Beomgyu's neck, caressing the soft skin, feeling the rapid pulse beneath, feeling the overwhelming need to pull Beomgyu close, but continued his words.
"That's what I wanted to tell you tonight as well. I'm not leaving... I'm moving out."
His words, left Beomgyu in shock. He couldn't fathom it at first, letting the words settle down. He was...not leaving?
"But Soobin...how?" He asked meekly, trying to grasp at any solid truth he coud find, desperate to know this was 100% true, heart racing in anticipation.
"I realised I don't wanna be a burden to her and he awkward with some man I can't call my father. I want to move-out Beomgyu... I'm already 18. It's okay."
Soobin's words settle like a comforting warmth over Beomgyu, filling all the cracks and spaces of uncertainty that had settled over his heart. He didn't leave, not moving away at all.
Soobin's not going anywhere. That realisation made Beomgyu undeniably giddy. He surged forward, his arms wrapping around Soobin, pulling him into a tight embrace, feeling the need to feel his warmth, his heartbeat, to confirm this was real.
A muffled laugh escapes him, "You really scared me, you ass."
Soobin laughed as Beomgyu wrapped his arms tighter around him, the weight of his head against his chest both comforting and exhilarating. He wrapped his arms around Beomgyu's waist, a smile playing on his lips.
He murmured into Beomgyu's hair, "Scared you? I wasn't the one dropping confession bombs on your birthday night, crying all over the place."
Beomgyu leaned back slightly, a playful scoff escaping him. He punched Soobin's chest lightly, his smile brightening the tears on his cheeks. "Shut up! I was nervous!" he protested, but his arms didn't leave Soobin, clutching him closer.
Soobin laughed, rubbing small circles over Beomgyu's back, feeling the tension in him ease slightly. "I know, I know. It's cute, really. You're a crybaby, you know that?"
"I'm not a crybaby! I just have stronger emotions!" Beomgyu countered back, trying to hold back a smile. He relaxed in Soobin's hold, feeling the tension melt away with each reassuring circle. Being this close, feeling Soobin's steady heartbeat under his fingers, and their confession hanging in the air, felt like a sweet dream.
"Besides, you cried too!" he added petulantly.
"Cried a little, maybe-" Soobin teased, his fingers tracing lightly along Beomgyu's spine. But his voice turns quieter, serious. "For real though. I love you. Always have, always will."
And with that confession lingering in the air, under the warmth of firelight, Soobin pulled Beomgyu into a loving kiss, sealing their feelings and sealing their love in the beautiful December night.
Beomgyu's heart leapt against his chest, his heart feeling like it was doing flips. Soobin loved him... had loved him all along, and it made Beomgyu feel like he was on cloud nine. As Soobin pulled him into a kiss, Beomgyu closed his eyes, lost in the feel of Soobin's hands, the softness of his lips, and the warmth of the December night. His fingers tangled in Soobin's hair, pulling him closer, kissing him back with every emotion he had pent up inside. It was everything he could've hoped for and more.
The kiss was like coming home, a sense of comfort mingling with the sparks of emotion. Soobin pulled back slightly, their foreheads resting against each other, their breaths mingling. "Love you," he whispered again, the words a sweet vow in the quiet of the night, sealing their love under the star-strewn sky.
"Love you too, you damn idiot."
