i . beginning

seo-yoon woke up, feeling uncomfortable and unaware of her surroundings. she felt as though she was numb from her neck above, but she would have to move anyway.

the lights were bright as they shined throughout the room of players. she slowly sat up, her body sending shocks throughout it. her vision was blurry at first before it went normal.

she sat on the edge of the bunk, her being on one of the middle levels. seo-yoon tucked the spare hair that was in the way behind her ear. she then looked down at her chest, where a number was.  444.

everybody looked around, wondering where they were. some were already on the floor. seo-yoon looked towards the multiple bunks next to her. one person looking back. she had short hair with blonde highlights.

the moment got interrupted by a group of people in pink suits, their faces being covered. seo-yoon didn't know what they were- nobody did.

"i would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to you all. over the next six days, you will participate in six different games. those who win all six games will recieve a handsome cash prize." the middle guard said.

"excuse me." someone called out. seo-yoon's eyes followed to the voice. a pretty woman in her eyes, continued to speak. "if we're just playing games here, then why'd you basically kidnap us? how can we trust you now?" as the girl spoke, seo-yoon's eyes followed to the number on her chest, squinting to see it. 120.

"my apologies. please understand that it was a necessary step taken to maintain the strict confidentiality of these games." the guard said in response to the womans question.

another girl began to call out, and then a boy, and then another girl. some people began agreeing and some disagreeing. at this point seo-yoon just wanted to get in whatever the hell they were doing.

seo-yoon leaned on the metal railing of her bunk, clearly getting a bit annoyed with the situation. "did you people strip me when you shoved me into this?" a girl exclaimed, putting up her jacket. seo-yoon laughed a little at the girl making her tongue go to the side of her cheek before back to regular.

she then went back to her normal expression, trying to seem cold and not weak. it was hard though, considering her mother called her a flower and easy to break.

after the boy and girl finished their exclaims, the guard quickly silenced them. "my apologies, but im afraid that's not possible. to ensure the games run smoothly, you must wear your uniforms."

"uh, what about my phone?" a boy asked, going up to the front to have some eye contact witht he guard who was answering all of it. seo-yoon tilted her head at him. she couldn't see his number through the fields of people. "you took my phone and my wallet. what the hell's going on? when'll we get those?" he continued to ask.

"your belongings are safe and being stored securely. we will return them to you once the games have ended." the guard reassured. though seo-yoon couldn't hear his tone, she could tell that it was not gonna happen.

"can i please get my phone returned at least? i need to see how my crypto is doing. are you guys gonna compensate me if i cant trade my coins?" the boy asked again to the guard. all seo-yoon could think about was how silly that situation is. who even does crypto?

"we will return your phones once the games have ended." the guard said again.

"i need to know if the markets going down. do you know how much money I've invested?" the player asked in disbelief.

"player 333, lee myung-gi." the guard started, clicking a button causing a video to start playing. seo-yoon tilted her head to the side more to see it. he then got slapped by- most likely the person she encountered when she played that game. "age thirty, former owner of the youtube channel, mg coin. promoted dalmation, a new cryptocurrency, leading his subscribers to lose a combined 15.2 billion won. he then shut down his channel and disappeared. currently wanted for fraud and violating multiple communication and investment laws total debt : 1.8 billion won."

seo-yoon heard all of what the guard said. she glanced at- apparently myung-gi then back at the guard. his back was turned still. he looked back slightly, looking at the bunk besides her. the player, 222, adjusted herself so her head was out of the dark and into the light, looking back at him. she watched the interaction with suspicion but didn't say anything. once 222 looked away, he glanced at seo-yoon briefly before back at the guard.

the guard announced some people saying their number, name, and debt. obviously seo-yoon was surprised when they said her name of all. "444, van seo-yoon, 138.5 million." they announced, her face being slapped sounded through the room.

player 222 looked towards her as seo-yoon looked away. they continued on with the players, only two or three more.

"every single player in this room is living on the brink of financial ruin. you're on the edge of a cliff saddled with debts you cannot hope to pay off. when we first approached each of you, you understandably did not trust us. but as you know, we played a game, and true to our word, we gave you money when you won. because of that we earned your trust. you called and volunteered to participate in this game of your own free will.  so this is it.  i'll give you one last chance to decide. will you go back to living like useless trash,  running from your creditors,  or will you take action and seize the opportunity we're offering you?"

seo-yoon thought for a moment. how bad can these games be?  her mom was her whole thought and the reason she came into this game, for her. she couldn't just not sign it and leave.

the lights dimmed a light orange. seo-yoon's eyebrows furrowed as she looked up. she was curious on what was about to happen, as this whole morning- whatever time was incredibly surprising.

"if you look above you, you will see the piggy bank where your prize money is going to be stored. as i said, you will play six games. after the conclusion of each game, more prize money will be added to the piggy bank." the guard explained. seo-yoon looked down after she was done looking at it.

"what's the total prize money at the end?" a boy shouted out. everybody else in that room thought of that question too, if it was out loud or in their heads.

"the total prize money is 45.6 billion won." the guard answered the question. seo-yoon's eyes bugged at the response. thats way more than she needed, but if she could win it all it would be fascinating.

everybody was in awe. on how they had that much money, and how much they could win. there is no line between. "more details on how the prize money gets divided will be shared after the first game has ended. for these games, we will also be giving you a special option that we've never offered before." the guard continued.

"and what options that?" an old man, who was clearly mad at his certain appearance on the screen asked.

"after each game, you will be given a chance to vote on whether you'd like to end the games there or if you want to keep playing. if the majority of you wish to stop, the games will be terminated. you can then take the prize money that has accumulated and leave." seo-yoon liked the sound of that. if everyone can get out of there with money, what's the big deal?

"hold on. after game one, if we vote to go, then the prize money gets divided among us?" another player asked. seo-yoon's head turned towards his way. she squinted her eyes, making out a 456.

"that is correct." the only guard who had been talking the whole time said. the player looked behind him. everyone else had glanced away, but seo-yoon had her eyes on him. he seemed to know something they all don't.

an old lady who certainly didn't sound sweet, rummaged through the crowd, shouting at people who didn't move. she made her way to her son as she yelled at him. seo-yoon looked away from 456, and now at the very random reunion.

after they had bickered for longer than they should've with 454 other people, seo-yoon looked away with a bit of annoyance in her eyes. myung-gi glanced at her briefly before looking away.

seo-yoon was walking back to her bunk when she noticed some commotion around to where she was supposed to be sleeping at. "mg coin? the amazing myung-gi? that you?" a player asked.

seo-yoon glanced over the players shoulder. there were two of them. one had purple hair, and one she couldn't quite describe. she saw player 333 there. she then remembered the video yet again.

"and you are?" myung-gi asked, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. the boys stared back at him, as well as seo-yoon.

"you don't know me, but i sure know you, g." the guy with the purple hair answered. the girl behind them thought that was a bit ridiculous, but stayed quiet. "mj coin. i was subscribed to your channel. i lost hundreds of millions because of your shit advice."

"so did i." the other person added. seo-yoon highly doubted it, but continued to her bunk. she walked up the stairs to her bunk, the conversation between the three fading in and out.

she played with her hair in boredom as she listened to the conversation being had. she wasn't usually nosy, but a subscriber that followed the persons advice and then got scammed felt a little interesting.

"anyways, thanks to you, nam-gyu and i really bonded with each other. through our shared trauma." seo-yoon looked at the persons number who said that, which was the purple haired guy. 230.

player 230 walked away for some reason that seo-yoon couldn't quite understand. she looked up and in the lines to see if she could see that girl she saw from before, blocking out the conversation for right now.

as she looked, she soon found the girl in the third line in the middle between the lines of people. she needed alliances soon, and she seemed like a nice girl.

randomly, people started looking towards the scene happening slightly below her. "what do you think? our money." 230 said. he had grip of myung-gi.

"did i force either of you to invest in dalmatian?" he asked, taking 230's arm off of him with ease. his tone was a little harsh.

"you fucking said everyone should sink every last penny into it. that it was going to the moon." 230 said roughly. "that if you didn't buty it, you'd be a fucking idiot!" he said getting closer and closer to myung-gi by the minute.

" ' whenever you're investing in the end it's up to you to make the final call based on your own judgement. ' " myung-gi copied from his youtube videos, seo-yoon assumed. "do you forget about that part at the end of the videos?  i thought you watched them every day." he said with a smug look.

seo-yoon could tell that he was gonna get his ass beaton soon enough. "don't." she said out loud. she didn't mean to say it, but kind of did also.

the boys looked up to her as she said it. 230 had the collar of myung-gi's jacket in hold, his fist up. "what'd you just say?" 230 asked with a mocking look on his face.

"it isn't proper to do it infront of other people. and guards." she added, not liking all the attention to be on her. her voice was still loud enough so they could hear. her gaze shifted from the guards back to the boy who was threatening to punch. 230's grip slightly untightened as myung-gi pushed his arm away.

she looked at myung-gi who just looked up at her. he didn't give her any thanks, and just walked away without saying anything. she rolled her eyes at him, she got him out in one piece. even 230 didn't get the last word.

"let's go." his friend put his arm around him and started to walk away. seo-yoon's eyes followed myung-gi as he walked to his bunks. it wasn't too far away nor short enough that you could just whisper.
